From Structure To Support: An Integrative Model Of Leadership, Emotional Exhaustion, Role Clarity, And Daoist Moderation, Aradhna Mohan May 2026

From Structure To Support: An Integrative Model Of Leadership, Emotional Exhaustion, Role Clarity, And Daoist Moderation, Aradhna Mohan

Dissertations

Rooted in the understanding that effective leadership significantly influences organizational outcomes, this study examines process-oriented relationships between leader initiating structure and subordinate outcomes. Specifically, it extends the leadership literature by focusing on the cognitive resources underlying initiating structure behaviors, such as role-related clarity, that may enhance positive subordinate outcomes and mitigate negative ones. The study also incorporates an underexamined Eastern leadership style, Daoist Water-Like Leadership, and explores its associations with leader initiating structure and consideration. Guided by the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model, this research assesses the effects of initiating structure and Daoist leadership on emotional exhaustion, examines the relationship between …

Autonomous Contracts And Transformative Justice: Practicing Family Law Without Court Intervention, D Dangaran, Andy Izenson May 2026

Autonomous Contracts And Transformative Justice: Practicing Family Law Without Court Intervention, D Dangaran, Andy Izenson

Cardozo Law Review

Legal scholars have made calls to “abolish family court” or “abolish the family.” Before family court can be abolished, society must reduce its reliance on state interventions to resolve family disputes. This Article applies abolition theory and the praxis of “non-reformist reforms,” derived from Black feminist thought and the prison abolition movement, to family law. It details the context of the current “carceral” interventions that rely on state enforcement and then categorizes alternative family law tools into noncarceral, anticarceral, and transformative practices. Noncarceral approaches, such as private ordering through prenuptial, “no-nuptial,” and separation agreements, and establishing parentage for assisted reproduction …

Data-Driven Multimodal Mri Representation Learning For Subtype Discovery And Disease Progression Modeling In Parkinson’S Disease, Zihan Zhou May 2026

Data-Driven Multimodal Mri Representation Learning For Subtype Discovery And Disease Progression Modeling In Parkinson’S Disease, Zihan Zhou

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Parkinson’s disease (PD) exhibits substantial clinical and neuroanatomical heterogeneity, limiting robust patient stratification and clinically meaningful progression modeling from MRI. We propose a unified multimodal 3D generative representation-learning framework that learns an interpretable latent space from co-registered baseline T1/T2 MRI with an edge-aware channel. Confound-corrected latent embeddings support unsupervised subtype discovery, while disease duration provides weak supervision to orient a continuous progression axis. On an independent external cohort (PPMI, N=171), the discovery-trained subtype structure shows significant partial replication (ARI=0.35; permutation test p=0.001) and enables longitudinal clinical stratification: mixed-effects modeling reveals subtype-dependent MDS-UPDRS III progression, with the strongest effect in subtype …

The Reliance On Children In Atomic Bomb Literature, Chenyeng Vang May 2026

The Reliance On Children In Atomic Bomb Literature, Chenyeng Vang

English Undergraduate Honors Theses

This paper explores the conventions of children’s literature, or what children embody in literature, and how it functions within atomic bomb literature in three ways: filling the gap of the unreliability of language, pushing past binaries through its queerness, and universalizing messages of peace to focus on a broad vision of a better future. Analysis involves atomic bomb literature written within the first five decades of the bombings, from 1945 to 1995. This research additionally seeks to answer the question: why children’s stories? This paper concludes that the dependence on children within atomic bomb literature hinges upon constructions of children …

Addressing Low Vaccination Rates In Lewis County, New York: A Community-Based Participatory Research Study, Samantha Carter

Anthropology

Low rates of on-time human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination continue to remain a significant public health concern, particularly in rural communities, one being Lewis County NY, which reports the lowest rate of vaccination in the state.  This study, through Upstate Medical University, uses a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) model in efforts to examine barriers to HPV vaccination and identifying community-driven solutions formulated by committee members from within the community.  A steering committee composed of researchers and community members, who were also co-researchers, worked collaboratively to develop and distribute surveys to healthcare providers, dentists, and parents.  Responses revealed that while many parents …

Integrating Doulas Into The Medical Team, Alyssa Shaw May 2026

Integrating Doulas Into The Medical Team, Alyssa Shaw

Anthropology

This thesis explores the potential integration of doulas into the obstetric medical team, defining birth as a cultural and social experience as well as a physiological process. Drawing on anthropological literature and historical accounts, I examine the shift from social, woman-centered childbirth practices to the medicalized model that occurs in modern American obstetrics. While this transformation has improved maternal and infant mortality rates, it has also caused a loss of continuous emotional and social support for laboring mothers, as well as a shift in autonomy from the birthing person to medical professionals. To investigate how doulas may help bridge this …

Conditioning Hierarchical Diffusion Transformers On Rf Circuit Parameters, Ethan Morton May 2026

Conditioning Hierarchical Diffusion Transformers On Rf Circuit Parameters, Ethan Morton

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

As modern ML techniques have become increasingly advanced, they have begun to be integrated into wireless RF systems for classification, identification, and spectrum management. Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) enable RF system operators and designers to design more flexible systems with greater robustness to errors and attacks. However, neural networks require significant amounts of properly annotated data to train. Current data labeling methods lack the ability to obtain reliable true labels for circuit properties such as carrier frequency offset (CFO), power amplifier (PA) non-linearity, and in-phase/quadrature (IQ) imbalance. This thesis investigates the efficacy of a novel architecture, RF-Diffusion, for generating high-quality …

Temporal Logic Planning In Semantic Maps Of Unknown Environments Using Tl-Rrt, Dongrui Yang May 2026

Temporal Logic Planning In Semantic Maps Of Unknown Environments Using Tl-Rrt, Dongrui Yang

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Autonomous mobile robots are increasingly expected to perform complex missions in unstructured environments. Traditional path planning approaches handle simple point-to-point navigation, but struggle with complex tasks that involve temporal and logical orderings of objectives. Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) provides a method for complex missions (e.g., sequential visits to multiple targets or surveillance tasks) in a strict way. This thesis presents an integrated planning framework that enables a robot to satisfy LTL-based task specifications in an unknown environment by combining a Temporal Logic RRT* (TL-RRT*) planner with semantic mapping. The robot builds a semantic map of its environment online using simultaneous …

Influence Of Asd On Morality, Spencer Brown May 2026

Influence Of Asd On Morality, Spencer Brown

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

Autism is known as a developmental disorder that incurs a social skills deficit on those that have it. This social skills deficit has been proposed to affect further aspects of autistic people’s psychology such as empathy and morality. Studies using the moral stages theory of development have found that those with autism are deficient in these proposed social skills. However, further research into how morality and empathy, as well as the results of experiments looking into morality in autistic populations, have brought the accuracy of moral reasoning into doubt. In the present paper, we review the literature on how empathy, …

Through site analysis, precedent studies, fire station tours, and architectural research, the project develops a design proposal that integrates operational efficiency …

The Social Seam: Combating Social Isolation Through Architecture, Elissa Hammrich May 2026

The Social Seam: Combating Social Isolation Through Architecture, Elissa Hammrich

Architecture Theses

A lack of walkable environments and well-supported public spaces has created a crisis of social disconnection across the United States. Historically, dating back to the public squares of ancient Greece, the public realm was a place of communal ritual from which citizens drew their primary identity. Today, however, modern cities are driven by commerce and technology, rapidly losing the genuine spaces that create face-to-face human interaction. By prioritizing the efficient movement of vehicles and goods over human connection, it has left behind fractured, isolated communities.

This thesis explores architectural strategies to combat this social isolation, focusing specifically on the Near …

Nature And Nurture: The Cognitive Image Of A Building And Its Site, Treyton Hardy May 2026

Nature And Nurture: The Cognitive Image Of A Building And Its Site, Treyton Hardy

Architecture Theses

Current specialized care facilities often prioritize functionality over the emotional and psychological well-being of their residents. For individuals experiencing dementia, illegible architectural layouts hinder spatial problem-solving and cause severe disorientation. This thesis introduces "Nature & Nurture," a comprehensive dementia recovery and research community proposed for Duluth, Minnesota. By utilizing Kevin Lynch’s Five Elements of the cognitive image, this project establishes an evidence-based architectural framework designed to reduce cognitive load. The design integrates multi-sensory wayfinding cues, continuous circulation paths, and hyper-local landmarks to facilitate environmental recognition rather than demanding complex memory recall. Ultimately, this thesis demonstrates how legible spatial design can …

Finding Home: Evidence For Change, Ellie E. Eichhorn May 2026

Finding Home: Evidence For Change, Ellie E. Eichhorn

Architecture Theses

In the Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area there are an average of 957 people who are facing homelessness on any given night. On their journey to permanent housing they usually start at emergency shelters, which provide short-term housing and stability. Though these shelters work for some, most people leave without getting the permanence they need, causing a revolving door effect. So what is a possible solution? The problem of homelessness has inflicted the modern world for as long as it’s been around with very few solutions being 100% effective. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t keep trying for those in need. This …

Monastic Design: Recovering The Sacred, Thomas Larkin Derek Crompton May 2026

Monastic Design: Recovering The Sacred, Thomas Larkin Derek Crompton

Architecture Theses

Throughout history, transcendental meaning has been woven into the very fabric of architecture to awaken and attune our souls toward a greater understanding of the inherent, unquantifiable aspects of life. Design elements such as light, material, proportion, and mystery were used as communicators of meaning rather than merely tools of utility. However, with the rise of positivism in the modern period, many transcendental elements of design were disregarded in favor of a more functionalist approach. The strategies employed by this approach influenced much of modern religious architecture and have resulted in many churches that lack the fundamental principle they claim …

From Radiance To Resonance: A Human-Centered City Between Geometry And Humanity: Reconciling Modernist Ideals With Human-Centered Design, Christen Zeetu Doe May 2026

From Radiance To Resonance: A Human-Centered City Between Geometry And Humanity: Reconciling Modernist Ideals With Human-Centered Design, Christen Zeetu Doe

Architecture Theses

This thesis investigates how architectural practice can shift from top-down, modernist planning paradigms toward an observational methodology grounded in lived experience. Engaging with the legacy of Le Corbusier’s Radiant City, it critiques the pursuit of universal order and efficiency that often suppresses the nuances of everyday life. Drawing from Georges Perec’s attentive documentation of mundane urban moments, the project develops a process of “moment mapping,” where spatial understanding emerges through observation rather than imposed form. These collected moments are then abstracted into architectural elevations and spatial constructs, translating temporal, sensory experiences into built form. The thesis is situated within a …

A Translation Of Culture, Dinithi Warnakula May 2026

A Translation Of Culture, Dinithi Warnakula

Architecture Theses

This thesis explores the processes of shared occupation, layering and translation in architecture as a means of cultural cohabitation. Located on the Keating Channel waterfront in Toronto, the project explores themes of migration, shifting identities and communal life in an urban context. The thesis, beginning with the theories of Vilém Flusser and Daniel Heller-Roazen, addresses translation as linguistic and geographical condition. The layered Sinhala, Tamil and English characters produce an artefact that throws dynamic shadows that interact with the physical architecture through tiered thresholds, framed views and filtered light conditions. This created cultural commons, spaces for everyday interaction, narration, socialisation …

Sanctuary: Caring For The Whole Person In A Fragmented World, Hazel Elizabeth Chvatal May 2026

Sanctuary: Caring For The Whole Person In A Fragmented World, Hazel Elizabeth Chvatal

Architecture Theses

Drawing especially upon the writings of Alberto Perez-Gomez, this thesis claims that today’s built environment neglects social and spiritual wellbeing. Efficiency and productivity take priority over meaning and wellbeing, and many spaces fail to provide any context about relationship to a larger reality. Taking inspiration from the traditions of Benedictine monks and nuns, this architecture thesis proposes ritual as a means to invite participation and emphasize connection. A design process of artefactual making grounds the embodied experience in layers of authentic cultural, historical, and scientific realities. Through a layered, narrative-driven design approach, this thesis seeks to address social and spiritual …

The Built Environment Effects On Pediatric Mental Health, Ashley Olson May 2026

Life Beyond Architecture, Mauro Benvenutto May 2026

Life Beyond Architecture, Mauro Benvenutto

Architecture Theses

This thesis argues that the loss of public life in many contemporary American cities cannot be explained by architecture alone. While placeless, standardized, and emotionally thin architecture remains an important symptom of the problem, the deeper condition is urban: cities and neighborhoods have been reorganized around the private automobile, separated land uses, oversized parking fields, high-speed commercial corridors, and development models that prioritize convenience and efficiency over human scale. The result is an environment where people technically have access to buildings, sidewalks, shops, and roads, but often lack meaningful freedom of choice. Walking, biking, transit, lingering, and informal social life …

The Phenomenology Of Home: Exploring The Interlinked Relationships Between Dwelling And Domestic Architecture, George Martin Grunklee

Architecture Theses

This thesis explores the concept of home from a phenomenological perspective to inform a communication method and design process for domestic architecture. While “home” holds multiple meanings, this study traces the phenomenological relation between human’s embedded existence and place—to understand home as a condition shaped by the lived experiences of its inhabitants. The aim of this thesis is to understand how the design of domestic architecture is intrinsically linked to dwelling and to the accumulation of lived experiences.

The thesis critically engages phenomenology in architectural practice by exploring case studies which exhibit and foster the concept of home. Frank Lloyd …

The Esplanade Memory Pavilion: Reconstructing Collective Memory Through Architecture, Isabelle Johannah Binder May 2026

The Esplanade Memory Pavilion: Reconstructing Collective Memory Through Architecture, Isabelle Johannah Binder

Architecture Theses

This thesis investigates architecture as a medium for reconstructing memory through the assembly of spatial, social, and temporal fragments. Sited on Fiedler Field along the Boston Esplanade, the project proposes a memorial and community music space that resists singular narratives, embracing incompleteness as intrinsic to collective memory. The site operates as both a literal and conceptual field where dispersed histories and experiences are brought into relation.

The architecture emerges through aggregation rather than imposition, organizing fragments into moments of compression and release, light and shadow, sound and silence. Circulation forms a narrative sequence, guiding visitors through spaces of reflection, gathering, …

Resilience By Design, Mckenzy Thoreson May 2026

Resilience By Design, Mckenzy Thoreson
