Deaf Space 2.0 - Adapted And Scaled To Large Urban Infrastructures, Youngjin Yi May 2026

Deaf Space 2.0 - Adapted And Scaled To Large Urban Infrastructures, Youngjin Yi

Theses

This thesis investigates how DeafSpace principles can be adapted and scaled beyond interior environments to operate effectively within large urban infrastructures. While DeafSpace has been successfully applied in controlled, building-scale contexts, its potential at the scale of sidewalks, transit hubs, and public circulation systems remains underexplored. Contemporary urban environments rely heavily on auditory cues to communicate movement, safety, and orientation, creating barriers for Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals and limiting clarity for the public at large. Through architectural observation, spatial analysis, and scenario-based evaluation conducted at the Rochester Institute of Technology campus and downtown Rochester, this research examines how architectural form, …

The Role Of Art-Based Pre-Performance Rituals For Collegiate Student-Athletes And Their Perceived Effects On Mental Preparation, Haylee P. Robinson May 2026

The Role Of Art-Based Pre-Performance Rituals For Collegiate Student-Athletes And Their Perceived Effects On Mental Preparation, Haylee P. Robinson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This paper will explore whether collegiate student-athletes at the University of Northern Colorado (UNCO) engage with art-based pre-performance rituals (PPRs) and, if so, examine their perceived effects on mental preparation prior to competition. Research has discussed traditional preparatory routines (PRs)—breathing techniques, visualization, goal setting, and problem-solving—creating a gap for understanding how creative or symbolic rituals function in the realm of collegiate sports. Combining Clifford Geertz's (1973) anthropological framework of ritualized behaviors acting as “meaning-making systems” with empirical evidence supporting art therapy, this research positions symbolic art-based interventions as PPRs, helping athletes with focus, emotional regulation, and confidence prior to competition. …

The Impact Of The 2018 Zero Tolerance Policy On Children In The U.S Child Welfare System, Gabrielle Pelayo, Griselda Padron, Alexxis Garcia

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

In 2018, the implementation of the Zero Tolerance Policy led to the forced separation of children from their parents at the United States/Mexico border, raising concerns about the potential effects on children’s attachment relationships and mental health. Guided by ecological systems theory and attachment theory, the study will explore how separation shaped children’s attachment relationships and mental health outcomes, and what these experiences reveal about gaps within the child welfare system’s capacity to respond effectively. The two guiding research questions are: (1) How have the experiences of children separated under the 2018 Zero Tolerance Policy influenced their attachment relationships and …

Mass Incarceration And The Psychological And Social Impacts On Black And Latino Families, Ofelia Godina, Tamara Winegardner, Erika Cabrera

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Mass incarceration will have profound and disproportionate effects on Black and Latino families in the United States, extending beyond the incarcerated individual to impact family functioning, emotional well-being, and access to support systems. Rooted in structural racism and inequitable criminal justice policies, mass incarceration will contribute to long-standing social and economic disparities that will continue to shape the lived experiences of marginalized communities. This study will explore the psychological and social impacts of incarceration on Black and Latino families, with particular attention to emotional distress, family relationships, stigma, and resilience. Using a qualitative research design, the study will employ semi-structured …

Arrest Rates And Police Presence In East Bay Area Counties Of Northern California, Christiana M. Tyler

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

In this research study, we discuss the social phenomenon of mass incarceration in the United States. Previous research has evidenced clear racial disparities within this social issue, but has yet to make a connection between high incarceration rates and the sheer volume of police officers in many communities. This descriptive study sets out to discover whether there is a difference in incarceration rates based on the level of police presence in select counties in Northern California. The study will measure police presence by the number of police officers, using secondary data from U.S. government and nonprofit agencies. The researcher hypothesizes …

Weaving Ideology: Textiles In Florentine And Venetian Painting Of The Cinquecento, Ruben Verità May 2026

Weaving Ideology: Textiles In Florentine And Venetian Painting Of The Cinquecento, Ruben Verità

Art and Art History Honors Projects

Renaissance art historical scholarship has largely ignored the political and cultural significance woven into the representation of textiles, as well as their communicative potential in paintings. In this study, I examine how textiles in their various forms carry the potential to go beyond their normative categorization as decoration. Through a comparative analysis of the paintings produced in two politically distinct polities—Florence and Venice—during the sixteenth century, I integrate Louis Althusser’s theory of ideology and Michael Baxandall’s period eye to elucidate how painted fabric was not the representation of a passive decorative ornament. Rather, it was an active and legible proxy …

Sleep Disturbances In Parkinson’S Patients With A History Of Head Injury, Melissa N. Pacheco May 2026

Sleep Disturbances In Parkinson’S Patients With A History Of Head Injury, Melissa N. Pacheco

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Sleep disturbances are among the most prevalent and burdensome non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD), yet the contribution of prior traumatic brain injury (TBI) to these problems remains poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the number and severity of lifetime head injuries predicted sleep disturbances in individuals with PD. Data from 3,055 PD patients enrolled in the Fox Insight study were analyzed, including 1,593 with a history of head injury. Participants completed self-report questionnaires assessing head injury history, motor and cognitive symptoms, and sleep disturbances. Generalized linear mixed models tested whether head injury history and …

Ableism In Higher Education: Platicas Framing Faculty Perception Of Student Accommodations And A Call To Action, Stephanie P. Rivas May 2026

Ableism In Higher Education: Platicas Framing Faculty Perception Of Student Accommodations And A Call To Action, Stephanie P. Rivas

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Academic ableism and traditional educational practices hinder the success of disabled students (Dolmage, 2017). As a student with disabilities, I have witnessed gradual improvements in the perception of disabilities in education. However, academic ableism persists in today’s higher education institutions, which can be disheartening for students like me, an unapologetically disabled person. This study employs framing theory, a communication theory that explains how people interpret and organize information (Goffman, 1947). These frames influence how accommodations are perceived, shaping attributes and connections between behaviors and potential causes (Tewksbury & Scheufele, 2019). Using platicas, a kind of cultural method of open conversational …

Inclusion And Equity In Early Childhood Special Education, Maranda Martinez May 2026

Inclusion And Equity In Early Childhood Special Education, Maranda Martinez

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The present study examined equity and inclusion in early childhood special education through the lived experiences of administrators, educators, and caregivers. Despite decades of legislation, preschool students of color with dis/abilities continue to experience disproportionate identification for special education, exclusionary discipline, and limited access to inclusive settings (DHHS & DE, 2023; NCD, 2018). Grounded in Disability Critical Race Theory (DisCrit), this study explores how intersecting systems of racism and ableism shape early childhood educational access and opportunity.

Guided by a phenomenological approach with a transformative paradigm, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with eighteen participants including administrators, early childhood special …

Building Resilience: How Protective Factors Mitigate Acculturative Stress In The Latinx Immigrant Community, Andres I. Delgado, Jamie Tierrablanca

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This literature underscores the vital role of protective factors in reducing

acculturative stress among Latinx immigrants. Key factors such as social

support, religious affiliation, familism, and physical activity help contribute to

mitigating the negative effects of acculturation. The Latinx community can

significantly benefit from integrative, culturally responsive interventions informed

by social work frameworks such as ecosystems theory and critical race theory

(CRT) as they are essential in addressing the mental health needs of this

population. Despite existing research, gaps remain in understanding the full

scope of the Latinx immigrant experience, suggesting a need for further

exploration. The expected findings will …

Beyond The System: A Critical Analysis Of Child Welfare Placement Practices For Children With Autism, Lauren Scott, Nicole Navarro May 2026

Beyond The System: A Critical Analysis Of Child Welfare Placement Practices For Children With Autism, Lauren Scott, Nicole Navarro

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological condition that affects an individual’s communication, social interactions, and behavior. Approximately 1.7% of children in the United States are diagnosed with ASD. Families raising children with ASD face significant challenges, including limited support systems, caregiver fatigue, and financial strain. These difficulties increase the likelihood of maltreatment, leading to higher rates of children with ASD being referred to Child Welfare Agencies. Once involved in the system, children with ASD often encounter difficulties in finding appropriate long-term foster or kinship placements, which can result in high rates of placement instability. This research seeks to identify …

Reducing Hospital Readmissions Through Pharmacist-Led Medication Reconciliation At Discharge, Ambreen Moazzam

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

One of the ancient problems of the healthcare systems in the world is hospital readmission, which leads to increased costs, morbidity, and an unwarranted load on medical resources. One evidence-based intervention that can address this problem and improve medication accuracy and continuity of care is pharmacist-led medication reconciliation at discharge. The proposed project will identify the impact of pharmacist involvement in discharge pharmacy reconciliation on patient outcomes and readmission. The present paper is quantitative, descriptive study, where retrospective and prospective information was used to estimate medication discrepancies, readmission, and patient compliance in adult inpatients. The evidence substantiates pharmacist-led medication reconciliation …

Girlhood, Interrupted: An Intersectional Feminist History Of Decolonizing And Reclaiming Womanhood, Ayden Kelly May 2026

Girlhood, Interrupted: An Intersectional Feminist History Of Decolonizing And Reclaiming Womanhood, Ayden Kelly

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

In the past few decades, social and political discourse surrounding womanhood and who is considered a "real" woman has led to the execration of transgender women. This work will explore how recent discourse and rhetoric surrounding who is and who is not a “real woman” can be traced to nineteenth century notions of “true womanhood” that excluded women of color. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with westward expansion, settler colonialism, residential schools, slavery, and post-emancipation serving as backdrops, this work will also analyze how ideologies of womanhood have interrupted and suppressed women of color throughout Western American …

Countering Anti-Immigrant Narratives: Promoting Socio-Emotional Well-Being Through Familism, Counter-Storytelling, And Community Building In Latinx Family Workshops, Sitlaly Irais Jimenez Preciado

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

In recent decades, the United States has seen a growing anti-immigration climate marked by restrictive policies, racialized political rhetoric, and public discourse targeting immigrant communities. This environment has heightened fear, discrimination, and exclusion for immigrant families, especially those of Latinx origin, affecting daily life in schools, healthcare, and community spaces (Caballero et al., 2022; Roche et al., 2021). These families experience socio-emotional challenges, including anxiety, depression, and fear, alongside barriers to social and health services.

While research documents the harmful effects of anti-immigration policies and rhetoric on Latinx families, few interventions focus on protective factors that help Latinx families navigate …

Divine Attachment As Discipleship: Theology And Practice, Kristina Freed May 2026

Divine Attachment As Discipleship: Theology And Practice, Kristina Freed

Journal of Adventist Youth and Young Adult Ministries

Discipleship is more than obedience and behavior management; it is first and foremost a relationship with God. What kind of relationship? Kaufman hinted that it is an attachment relationship, asserting that God is the ultimate attachment figure. Unfortunately, he did not articulate a theology of attachment. While research in the psychology of religion research has shown that God is perceived as an attachment figure and that He engages in attachment behaviors with humans, a theology of attachment has yet to be developed. This paper offers a theology of divine attachment built upon textual and linguistic evidence. I also suggest a …

In the digital age, technology significantly impacts the worldview and spiritual lives of youth, creating new challenges and opportunities for discipleship. This paper explores how faith leaders can integrate digital tools like social media, online platforms, and apps into youth mentorship to foster spiritual growth. While technology offers opportunities to engage with youth where they are, it also presents challenges like information overload, distractions, and online misinformation. By adapting Biblical mentoring models to digital spaces, mentors can build authentic relationships, break geographical barriers, and create meaningful, flexible, and creative discipleship experiences. The paper provides strategies for leveraging digital platforms to …

All Student Scholarship

The current study gathered information on how women across five generations interpret feminism. Nine women were interviewed: (2 per generation, except the silent generation was 1). Understanding how women across five generations interpret feminism helps determine whether perspectives of feminism are due to a difference in time period or other variables. Based on research that has been conducted, we know that there are different views and interpretations of feminism on a broad scale; this study dove into participants’ perspectives and generational influence.

The preliminary findings of this study suggest there are some areas of the Feminist Movement that exhibit generational …

From Words To Growth: Exploring Employee Perceptions Of How Organizational Culture Shapes Effective Feedback Experiences, Amanda Neuts Phd

All Student Scholarship

Organizational culture plays an essential role in shaping how employees experience feedback and whether feedback supports professional growth. While feedback processes have been widely studied, less emphasis has been placed on how employees interpret the organizational culture conditions that influence feedback effectiveness. This qualitative phenomenological study explored employee perceptions of how organizational culture shapes feedback experiences and their impact on professional development, satisfaction, and engagement. Grounded in Schein’s Model of Organizational Culture and supported by Social Exchange Theory, this study investigated how values, underlying assumptions, and artifacts interact with relational dynamics such as trust, reciprocity, and fairness. Analysis of eight …
