Developing Indices To Study Engineers' Interest, Confidence, And Experience With Global Engineering Work Activities, Lexy Arinze, Joe Tort, Kirsten A. Davis

School of Engineering Education Faculty Publications

Background

As engineering work has become increasingly globalized, prior studies have examined the intercultural attitudes and competencies of engineering students and practicing engineers. However, we lack tools to study how engineers engage in global work across industries, roles, and organizational contexts.

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to develop a tool to measure engineers' interest, confidence, and frequency in performing global work tasks. To this end, we designed the Global Task Performance (GTP) indices, which evaluate four dimensions of engagement in global engineering work.

Methods

Guided by Social Cognitive Career Theory and the Global Engineering Competency (GEC) framework, we …

Knowledge Of Advance Care Planning And Advance Directives Among Us Adults: Implications For Health Policy And Practice, Anisah Bagasra, Gretchen Agans

Faculty Articles

Background:

Advance care planning (ACP) is the process of identifying and communicating values and goals in preparation for future shared decision-making in medical settings. Decisions are legally supported by an advance directive (AD) document designating healthcare agent(s) and future medical treatment preferences. Although important, ACP engagement in the United States remains low. Previous US research focuses heavily on ACP among older adults and those with life-limiting illness. Few studies have sought to understand knowledge of and engagement with ACP among the general population in primary care settings and potential barriers to completion of ACP.

Objectives:

This study examined US adults’ …

Modeling Of Polar Cap Ionospheric Patches And Attendant Plasma Instabilities: Initialization From Data And Parametric Analysis, Mark Redden May 2026

Modeling Of Polar Cap Ionospheric Patches And Attendant Plasma Instabilities: Initialization From Data And Parametric Analysis, Mark Redden

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

There is a robust history of theoretical work on ionospheric plasma patches and their attendant plasma fluid irregularities, particularly within the polar cap region.  Within this region though, plasma theory does not always yield tractable problems with succinct analytic solutions that are conceptually illuminating. Observational research methods and techniques, using a multitude of ground-based and in-situ systems, provide insights into this complex environment not always readily achieved through theory alone.  Limitations in observational insights exist; however, due to two inherent shortcomings of such systems; sensor observational persistence (in-situ sounding rocket and satellite plasma sensors) and/or sensor spatial resolution (terrestrial systems …

Perception Of 3d Data Visualizations, Tyler Wiederich May 2026

Perception Of 3d Data Visualizations, Tyler Wiederich

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Data visualizations are powerful tools for communicating complex data structures. They are typically presented in 2-dimensional formats, such as on paper or computer screens. In recent years, technological advancements have enabled traditional data visualizations to be fully rendered in physical environments through 3D printing, offering more natural interactions. However, this style of graphical rendering remains largely unexplored in empirical evaluations with traditional charts. In this research, we conducted two experiments to assess ratio estimations across 2D and 3D charts in digital and physical environments. The first study partially replicated Cleveland and McGill’s (1984) work in perceptual tasks and expanded to …

Fluid Belonging, Soft Boundary, Jingyi Liu May 2026

Fluid Belonging, Soft Boundary, Jingyi Liu

MFA in Visual Art

This thesis conceptualizes cultural identity as a fluid and dynamically generated process shaped through the experience of migration. Drawing on contemporary art practices and theoretical frameworks of diaspora and hybridity, the thesis is structured around four interrelated dimensions: fluid identity, memory fragmentation, material interaction, and spatial displacement.

Within the artist’s practice, traditional techniques are reactivated as both cultural signifiers and material approaches that adapt and transform across shifting contexts. Fragmentation is understood not as the loss of information but as a mode of reassembly. Materials such as ink, textile, and dye function as active agents that carry time and cultural …

Should I Stay Or Should I Go?: Evaluating The Role Of Climate And Weather Stressors On Moving Decisions In Southeast Florida, Arielle Perry May 2026

Should I Stay Or Should I Go?: Evaluating The Role Of Climate And Weather Stressors On Moving Decisions In Southeast Florida, Arielle Perry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

As climate and weather hazards intensify, Southeast Florida communities face mounting pressures that increasingly influence patterns of migration and immobility. This research examines evidence of climate migration in high flood-risk neighborhoods in Fort Lauderdale by exploring why some populations choose to stay, while others leave, in the context of a changing climate. Using focus group discussions, I investigate how climate and non-climate related factors shape mobility outcomes among residents in the city. Migration outcomes were primarily influenced by negative climate and weather hazard experiences, discontent with existing public in-situ adaptations, and non-climate disamenities, which eroded participants’ sense of place. Voluntary …

Comparative Analysis Of Circadian Rhythms In Humans And Other Mammals, Aashni Atkinson May 2026

Comparative Analysis Of Circadian Rhythms In Humans And Other Mammals, Aashni Atkinson

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

Circadian rhythms are biological process that regulate physiological functions on a twenty-four-hour cycle and are conserved across mammalian species. Environmental cues such as light, and behavioral patterns such as sleep schedules and social obligations, play a key role in maintain circadian alignment. This thesis examines how molecular, environmental, behavioral, and medical factors influence circadian regulation and contribute to differences between humans and other mammals. While the core molecular clocks, which are driven by transcription-translation feedback loops, remain consistent across species, humans’ circadian rhythms are frequently disrupted. In humans, technology and irregular routines lead to circadian misalignment. This disruption is associated …

Corporate Personhood And The Scope Of Constitutional Rights, Jadyn Cooper May 2026

Corporate Personhood And The Scope Of Constitutional Rights, Jadyn Cooper

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

In 2010, the Supreme Court, in Citizens United v. FEC, held that corporations have a First Amendment right to freedom of speech. Soon after, privately held corporations were effectively granted the First Amendment right to exercise religion, in Burwell v Hobby Lobby. Should corporations have these rights, or are rights reserved for “persons”? I argue that for-profit corporations, as artificial entities, lack the capacities for personhood and moral agency, including the capacity to express speech or exercise religion, without the use of a human agent. Since corporations are not moral agents, they don’t possess rights inherently and shouldn’t be granted …

Plymouth Business School

Artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled digital technologies have the potential to transform agriculture by supporting decision-making and automating operations. However, their limited adoptions and scholars’ atheoretical explorations constrain our understanding. Drawing on the technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework, we investigate the challenges hindering the AI-enabled technology's adoption in farms using a multi-method approach, including semi-structured interviews, thematic analysis, total interpretive structural modeling, and fuzzy cross-impact matrix multiplication applied to classification analysis. Our finding shows novelty in several aspects. First, we identify 13 challenges, some of which are underexplored, such as the absence of effective intermediaries in promoting agricultural technology. Second, we developed a hierarchical …

Neural Mechanisms Underlying Jung’S Active Imagination: A Review And Hypothesis, Charles R. Fox May 2026

Neural Mechanisms Underlying Jung’S Active Imagination: A Review And Hypothesis, Charles R. Fox

Journal of Conscious Evolution

Active imagination is a key technique of Jungian analysis. Despite its centrality, and its potential importance beyond Jungian psychology to the area of systems neuroscience, psychology, and consciousness studies, there are no known neurological mechanisms underlying this psychological phenomenon. There is a history of using the types of mental imagery used in active imagination to explore consciousness. The development and use of active imagination is briefly reviewed, and a case is developed that the neurology underlying active imagination would be fruitfully explored by considering it a special case of mystical experience. Active imagination primarily uses the right hemisphere processing of …

Behaviour-Based Gender Prediction Using Mobile App Usage Patterns, Saleha Alblooshi May 2026

Behaviour-Based Gender Prediction Using Mobile App Usage Patterns, Saleha Alblooshi

Theses

Widespread usage of mobile applications has generated massive behavioural information, which reflects routines, preferences, and lifestyles of users. Gender, demographic details are typically gathered in telecommunications settings in the registration of the SIM, but this data is often based on administrative ownership, and not the user of the device. This inconsistency can break the customer profiling, accuracy of segmentation and effectiveness of targeted marketing. The study is exploring the hypothesis through the examination of the data obtained based on an undertaking to check the validity of the registered gender data in telecommunication customer relationship management systems by using the behavioural …
