Stereotypes Of A Black Man Misunderstood: The Experiences And Development Of Black Men With Bipolar Disorder On College Campuses, Gerron Scott
Theses and Dissertations
Black men graduate from universities at a lower rate compared to other groups. Students with disabilities also graduate at a lower rate. When the two groups intersect, the results can be disastrous. Black men with bipolar disorder face a host of problems on college campuses. From a lack of sense of belonging to trouble in class, they struggle to stay afloat in college. The purpose of this study was to document the experiences and development of Black men with bipolar disorder on college campuses. A grounded theory approach was used in this study. Grounded theory was chosen because it leads …
"I Call Them Supermoms": Therapists' Reflections On The Impact Of Youth Sexual Offending On Latina Mothers, Mauricio P. Yabar
"I Call Them Supermoms": Therapists' Reflections On The Impact Of Youth Sexual Offending On Latina Mothers, Mauricio P. Yabar
Theses and Dissertations
Families of youth who have sexually offended often suffer significant collateral consequences following the discovery of the sexual offense. Samples in research with these families disproportionately consist of mothers and other female parental figures. This is rarely acknowledged in the literature, and the experiences of these mothers have not been explicitly examined. In addition, research on the experiences of these families has largely ignored factors related to race and ethnicity. This is a significant oversight considering the prevalence of systemic racism and discrimination in the United States, particularly in the systems with which these families must interact (e.g., juvenile justice …

Reflection: Cultivating Creativity And Healing Through Art Therapy, Caroline Ciccone
Theses and Dissertations
I was first introduced to the healing powers of art after working in an orphanage in Jamaica with children who had a wide range of disabilities. Some children were mute or unable to communicate, but art was a form of communication that brought us all together. Within the City of Richmond public school system, 31.7% of students are economically challenged and 13.1% of students are disabled (Education, 2022). Giving more resources in the arts and mental health support to students outside of their school environments is the goal. Art therapy helps reduce the dropout rate and improve mental health (10 …
Side Effects, Shannon R. Kurzyniec
Side Effects, Shannon R. Kurzyniec
Theses and Dissertations
Through the exploration of the personal and social impacts of prescription medications on the human condition, I have discovered that the side effects of prescription medications on myself and others are much greater than I had ever anticipated. The deeper I dig into my subconscious, the further back I find that the impact was created. Most of us are taught at a young age to take medicine when we don’t feel well. Stomach ache, headache, sore throat, fever, even the imaginary boo boo is given a pill to cure. As we age we begin to reach for pills due to …

Analyzing The Role Of Slc25a32 In Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Mimansha Shah
Analyzing The Role Of Slc25a32 In Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Mimansha Shah
Theses and Dissertations
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver cancer and a leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Despite advances in understanding its molecular pathogenesis, treatment options for HCC remain limited, highlighting the need for identifying novel therapeutic targets. This study investigates the role of SLC25A32, a mitochondrial transporter gene located on chromosome 8q22.3, in HCC progression. SLC25A32 is involved in the transport of tetrahydrofolate (THF) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) into mitochondria, playing a crucial role in one-carbon metabolism and redox balance. Using CRISPR/Cas9 technology, we generated potential SLC25A32 knockout clones in the HCC cell line Huh-7. Quantitative PCR …
Supervisor-Subordinate Communication In The Contemporary Audit Environment, Devon P. Jefferson
Supervisor-Subordinate Communication In The Contemporary Audit Environment, Devon P. Jefferson
Theses and Dissertations
Just five years ago I was working as an Audit Manager in person (in the office or at the client site), amongst each of my subordinates, which made common work practices like knowledge sharing, responding to questions, and building team morale easy. Since then, remote work has become the new norm, which has significantly changed the communication dynamics between supervisors and subordinates. This dissertation is my personal pursuit to understanding how supervisor and subordinate auditors are currently interacting to achieve desired work outcomes, and identifying specific areas where challenges may exist. I accomplish this objective through four papers, including a …
Spin Wave Devices For Embedded Applications And Information Processing, Raisa Fabiha
Spin Wave Devices For Embedded Applications And Information Processing, Raisa Fabiha
Theses and Dissertations
Device miniaturization is a prerequisite for modern day electronics. Spintronics offers immense potential in energy efficient data storage, solid states devices, ultrafast computing and other electronic applications because of their low power consumption, non-volatile nature and unique activation mechanism. The conventional nano-antennas used for wireless communication, biomedical and wearable devices and IoT applications are limited by the traditional Harrington limit. As we attempt to miniaturize the antenna size beyond its emitted wavelength (also called “subwavelength” antenna), its gain and efficiency plummet. To overcome this challenge, the researchers have proposed magnetoelectric antennas. The ultra-thin film based magnetoelastic antennas suffer from eddy …
Corporate Social Responsibility In An Islamic Environment: Analysis Of Ramadan And Eid Al-Fitr Advertisements For Stc, Zain, And Mobily Telecom Company From The Lens Of Legitimacy Theory, Entesar Albarakati
Theses and Dissertations
The concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has gained popularity in recent decades as the number of corporations that engage in CSR continues to grow. In the last 20 years the breadth of CSR has expanded substantially, not only in terms of the variety, scope, and influence of business policies, but also in terms of scholarly research. Despite the expansion of the field of CSR, Islamic corporate social responsibility (ICSR) still receives less attention in academic research than traditional CSR, perhaps because of the lack of defining boundaries and basic principles of ICSR. In Islamic countries such as the Middle …

How Ebony Transcends In The Ivory Tower: Unveiling Transformational Black Women Forging Leadership Paths In Historically White Institutions, Lauren N. Jackson
Theses and Dissertations
Considerable literature has amplified the perceived challenges and deficits of Black women as they advance in their careers within historically white institutions (HWI). As a result, there is a notable absence of anti-deficit explorations of the inherent abilities and strengths that contribute to Black women’s professional mobility. Grounded in anti-deficit achievement framework and Black feminist leadership, this study aimed to illuminate the assets and factors that influence the professional ascension of seven, current/former senior-level Black women in a HWI within the Southeastern region of the U.S. By adopting a qualitative, phenomenological framework, this study provides in-depth insights into the participants’ …
Sphingosine Kinase 2 Depletion Dysregulates Hepatic Redox Metabolism And Enhances Inflammation In Early Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis (Mash), Kaitlyn Georgene Jackson
Sphingosine Kinase 2 Depletion Dysregulates Hepatic Redox Metabolism And Enhances Inflammation In Early Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis (Mash), Kaitlyn Georgene Jackson
Theses and Dissertations
Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) currently affects one in three people worldwide; its prevalence is growing alongside other cardiometabolic disorders. Aberrations to redox and sphingolipid metabolism contribute to MASLD pathologic progression. Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) is an active lipid, meaning that S1P participates in biochemical processes within the cell. S1P is generated by two distinct isoenzymes, sphingosine kinase (SphK)1 and SphK2. The localization of the SphK enzyme dictates S1P function. While cytosolic SphK1-generated S1P is well-characterized, nuclear and mitochondrial SphK2-generated S1P is less known. Moreover, SphK2 depletion effects on cellular redox processes and inflammation are not well-defined.
This study defines the …

Theses and Dissertations
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is childhood's most common neuro- developmental disorder, mainly distinguished by a pattern of inattention, hyperactivity and/or impulsivity. Compared to the plethora of research on White children with ADHD, the research on Black children with ADHD is limited. Looking more closely at the functions related to parenting children with ADHD, there is even less information known on the interactions between Black children and their parents compared to White children and their parents. The primary aim of the thesis study was to compare observed parenting and child behaviors between Black mother/child dyads of children with and without ADHD. This …
Cellular Metabolism Is A Viable Therapeutic Target For Radiation-Induced Pulmonary Fibrosis, Josly Pierre-Louis Odoom
Cellular Metabolism Is A Viable Therapeutic Target For Radiation-Induced Pulmonary Fibrosis, Josly Pierre-Louis Odoom
Theses and Dissertations
Herein, we provide evidence for cellular metabolic reprogramming as a driver of radiation-induced pulmonary fibrosis (RIPF). We are the first to identify a distinct metabolic signature for RIPF in a cohort of patients with radiographic sequela. We also used a RIPF mouse model to detect the metabolic pathways that enrich during pathogenesis. Our previous work highlighted the importance of lactate, a derivative of the glycolysis end-product pyruvate. Consequently, we took a special interest in the effects of radiation on the glycolysis pathway. We learned that radiation accelerates and reprograms glycolysis to an anabolic state in a pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2)-dependent …
The Role Of Hdac6 In Periodontal Inflammation, Hannah S. Lohner
The Role Of Hdac6 In Periodontal Inflammation, Hannah S. Lohner
Theses and Dissertations
Periodontal disease is a polymicrobial infection-induced chronic inflammatory disease and results in irreversible tissue damage and bone loss. While bacteria play a large role in the initiation of this disease, excessive and prolonged inflammatory immune responses are fundamental for its progression, making host directed therapy (HDT) a possible and potentially valuable treatment. Histone Deacetylase 6 (HDAC6) is an enzyme that removes acetyl groups from both histone and non-histone proteins, giving it a potential role in regulating inflammation initiated by pathogenic oral bacteria. Previous studies indicated that HDACs act as a bivalent regulator in inflammatory responses; however, the role that HDAC6 …
Assessing Providers’ Readiness To Integrate Mat Services In A Primary Care Setting, Carmen Ingram-Thorpe
Assessing Providers’ Readiness To Integrate Mat Services In A Primary Care Setting, Carmen Ingram-Thorpe
Theses and Dissertations
Opioid use disorder is a growing concern in the United States. Despite medication-assisted treatment (MAT) being a more effective treatment option than behavioral treatment alone, primary care providers’ rate of adoption and utilization of MAT has not matched the demand of the opioid crisis. The largest barrier facing our local community is the availability of organizations and providers that can and will actually provide MAT services. The purpose of this study was to identify factors that impact primary care providers’ readiness to treat individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) using MAT. This study used the ADKAR model as framework, which …

Memory Impairments Due To Binge Ethanol Are Impacted By Age And Sex, Maria Alexis M. Bent
Theses and Dissertations
Ethanol is the most consumed drug among adolescents, which can cause long-term effects on memory and changes in gene and protein expression. While both adolescents and adults engage in binge drinking, the neurological and behavioral effects differ, with adolescents showing fewer adverse physiological effects but greater memory deficits than adults. Sex differences related to ethanol occur with women showing higher BEC than men and similar cognitive deficits despite fewer years of ethanol consumption. During adolescence the mPFC and dHPC undergo maturation development with both brain regions playing a role in spatial and recognition memory. Proteins critically involved in memory and …
Exploring The Role Of Senescence In Disuse-Induced Bone Loss And Therapeutic Strategies For Prevention, Steven J. Meas
Exploring The Role Of Senescence In Disuse-Induced Bone Loss And Therapeutic Strategies For Prevention, Steven J. Meas
Theses and Dissertations
Both age-related and disuse-related bone loss result in decreases in bone mineral density, cortical thickness, and trabecular thickness and connectivity. Disuse induces physiological changes in bone similar to those seen with aging. This study compared age- and disuse-related bone loss using C57BL/6J mice of various ages that were hind-limb unloaded (HLU). In male and female mice, HLU induced a bone phenotype between those of 6-month-old and 22-month-old control mice. Gene analysis suggested that HLU leads to mitochondrial dysfunction, while aging primarily downregulates cell cycle processes. Although, the specific response to HLU appeared to be dependent on age. The study identified …
A Qualitative Analysis Of Section 1983 Filings By Incarcerated Plaintiffs, Hollie Macdonald
A Qualitative Analysis Of Section 1983 Filings By Incarcerated Plaintiffs, Hollie Macdonald
Theses and Dissertations
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic was a “watershed moment" in human history, transcending its role as a mere health crisis to reveal deeper fissures within societies. The present retrospective longitudinal study examined COVID-19 as an “era” of complexity utilizing it as an intermediate construct that delineates “pre-COVID” and “post-COVID.” In order to understand the impact of the COVID-19 era, the design of the study and hypotheses stem from an assumption of the interconnectedness of issues related to health, social justice, racial justice, politics, and information dissemination.
This study utilized both manifest and latent content analysis to explore the most …
Effect Of Social Anxiety On Trial-By-Trial Changes In Attentional Biases To Emotional Faces, Nina Plotnikov
Effect Of Social Anxiety On Trial-By-Trial Changes In Attentional Biases To Emotional Faces, Nina Plotnikov
Theses and Dissertations
Cognitive research suggests that many anxiety disorders, including social anxiety disorder, are associated with an increased attentional bias toward potentially threat-related stimuli. However, inconsistent findings suggest the effect of anxiety on attentional bias to threat is not direct and that other factors, including emotion, perceptual load, and time on-task, impact the relationship between social anxiety and attentional biases to facial stimuli. In the present study, 157 undergraduate students completed a computerized letter search task identifying one of two target letters (N or X) from a circular arrangement of different letters (high load) or dots (low load). In 20% of trials, …
Exploring Emerging Adults' Consideration Of Future Cancer Risk Reduction: Opportunity For Shifting Prevention Paradigms?, Jacqueline Knight Wilt
Exploring Emerging Adults' Consideration Of Future Cancer Risk Reduction: Opportunity For Shifting Prevention Paradigms?, Jacqueline Knight Wilt
Theses and Dissertations
Background
Early onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC) among individuals younger than age-based population prevention screening guidelines has been linked to lifestyle-related risk factors. Emerging adulthood (18-25 years) is when elevated autonomy can alter health behaviors with implications for future health. Greater consideration of future consequences for behavior predicts several lifestyle health behaviors. Future consideration is sensitive to resource availability, and thus may differ between students who are first-generation and/or from low-income households (FGLI) compared to Non-FGLI. This dissertation study aimed to (1) characterize college students’ consideration of future cancer risk (CFC-Cancer), perceived colorectal cancer (CRC) risk and associations with EOCRC risk …
Investigation Of Brain Function And Structural Development As Risk Factors Of Suicidal Thoughts And Behaviors, Yi Zhou
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Identifying risk factors for suicidal thoughts and behaviors, especially causal ones, will be imperative to improving screening and treatment interventions. To identify replicable brain-based risk factors, there is increasing evidence indicating the need for large sample sizes, in the hundreds to thousands, in order to achieve a sufficient level of statistical power to detect them. Furthermore, longitudinal studies of brain and behavioral factors will be essential to understanding how suicide develops, especially the transition from suicide ideation to attempt. While experimental studies may not be feasible or ethical, genetically informed methods for testing evidence for causation are an alternative …
Enhancing Chemotherapeutic Efficacy Of Doxorubicin Through Combination Therapy With Rapamycin And Sildenafil, While Providing Cardioprotection In Breast Cancer Models, Rebecca Mathew
Theses and Dissertations
Doxorubicin (DOX) is a common chemo-drug for breast cancer, but it causes severe cardiotoxicity. This study explores combining Sildenafil (Sild) and Rapamycin (Rapa), which inhibit phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) and mTOR, respectively, to boost DOX’s anticancer, but provide cardioprotection. Triple negative human (MDA-MB-231) and murine (4T1) breast cancer cells were treated with DOX (1 µM) with/without Rapa (100 nM) and Sild (10 µM) for 24-72 hours to analyze cell death, cell viability assays and protein expression. Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive breast cancer (SKBr3) spheroids were treated with the same concentrations of DOX and/or AG825 (5µM) with/without Rapa and/or Sild for …

The Role Of Mirna-17-92 Following Myocardial Ischemia/ Reperfusion Under Normal And Diabetic Conditions, Virginia Villani Zwiren
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide. The risk of developing CVD is increased two-to-four-fold in patients with diabetes, and, following a myocardial infarction, patients with diabetes often have worse outcomes. Dysregulation of individual or clusters of microRNAs is linked to the pathogenesis of heart diseases and its risk factors, such as diabetes, hypertension, atherosclerosis, myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, and heart failure. Our study identified that the microRNA-17-92 cluster (miR-17-92) is suppressed in diabetic hearts with CVD. The purpose of the present study is to define how miR-17-92 attenuates injurious signaling in the post ischemic heart …
A Complexity Aware Overlay Architecture For High Integrity Fpga Based Systems, Richard Dwight Hite Jr
A Complexity Aware Overlay Architecture For High Integrity Fpga Based Systems, Richard Dwight Hite Jr
Theses and Dissertations
Cyber-Physical systems are becoming more and more prevalent in our society and are simultaneously becoming more complex due to evolving technological capabilities in both hardware and software. This complexity exacerbates verification and validation activities thereby negatively impacting important system attributes like design assurance, system reliability, development costs and trust. These facts necessitate the need for computing architectures that constrain complexity for the sake of assurance. Traditional software and hardware development for safety-critical systems have been demonstrated in previous safety-critical systems and the established development methodologies are well understood. However, both technologies have their strengths and limitations. Processor-based technology (SW based …

Voltage Control Of Interfacial Magnetism For Energy-Efficient Skyrmion-Based Memory And Neuromorphic Computing, Md Mahadi Rajib
Theses and Dissertations
The data generated annually has reached unprecedented levels, necessitating the integration of energy-efficient computing systems to achieve high performance and sustain our society’s computing needs. Specifically, energy-efficient computing, once considered advantageous, has now become essential in managing this exponential data growth. For example, the energy used solely by Google was equivalent to the energy consumed by a country with population >20 million in 2019 and this energy need is increasing exponentially [1]. Therefore, high-performance computing systems with energy-efficient, faster operability, and scalable computing units are necessary to address present and future computing challenges.
Apart from traditionally used conventional von Neumann …

Theses and Dissertations
Despite only comprising 0.1% of the myofiber surface area, a healthy motor endplate is densely packed with acetylcholine receptors (AChRs) responsible for mediating activity between the connected motor neuron and skeletal muscle via the neurotransmitter, acetylcholine. Loss of the endplate, known as fragmentation, is caused by car crashes, deep lacerations, and other traumatic injuries to the innervating nerve or direct injuries to the limb muscle(s) with intramuscular denervation as a common comorbidity. In both cases, endplate fragmentation begins within a week of injury proceeding muscle atrophy causing decreased mobility, paralysis, and quality of life. Endplate fragmentation of intact muscle fibers …
