Background: Within hours after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) onset, masses of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) infiltrate the ICH-affected brain. After degranulation involving controlled release of many toxic antimicrobial molecules, the PMNs undergo rapid apoptosis and then are removed by phagocytic microglia/macrophages (MΦ) through a process called efferocytosis. Effective removal of PMNs may limit secondary brain damage and inflammation; however, the molecular mechanisms governing these cleanup activities are not well understood. We propose that scavenger receptor CD91 on myeloid phagocytes especially in presence of CD91 ligand, LTF (lactoferrin, protein abundant in PMNs), plays an important role in clearance of dead apoptotic PMNs (ANs). …

"Bricolage" As Comparative Research Method For Critical Legislative Innovation, Marie-Claire Belleau
"Bricolage" As Comparative Research Method For Critical Legislative Innovation, Marie-Claire Belleau
FIU Law Review
Comparative law incentivize imagination to create new solutions to social problems intrinsically linked to different parts of the world. It consists in the analysis of multiple legal solutions revealed by research. Meanwhile, the understanding of the documentation put forward is influenced by the social, cultural, linguistic, political, and economic context where it evolved in the first place. Consequently, the interpretation of those elements leads to varying results. In response to this reality, we offer a modest comparative methodology rooted in creativity inspired by the concept of “bricolage” for the purpose of legislative innovations. In light of some descriptive examples pertaining …

How Chatbots Augment Human Intelligence In Customer Services: A Mixed-Methods Study, Xiaolin Lin, Xuequn Wang, Bin Shao, Joseph Taylor
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Although artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled chatbots have been increasingly incorporated into firms’ business processes, such as customer service, they are still ineffective at handling unstructured tasks. Therefore, organizations might adopt chatbots to cut down the workforce for structured tasks and augment the remaining employees in unstructured tasks. Although there are substantial workforce implications for rebalancing work activities, few studies have assessed chatbots from the augmentation angle by focusing on employees’ performance, perhaps because of the lack of a theoretical foundation and research on this new phenomenon within organizations. Using a mixed-methods design, we developed a model illustrating the impact of chatbots …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Internationally, university teacher educators are responding to the requirement that preservice teachers (PSTs) need to be confident, operational users of a broad range of technologies, and that they can apply their technological pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK). TPACK is a framework representing the complex interactions of teachers’ technological content knowledge and technological pedagogical knowledge with their pedagogical content knowledge; the interaction of the three domains is believed to produce effective teaching with technology. The challenge is designing an instrument that can validly and reliably evaluate whether PSTs have this wide range of knowledge, and if not, what their learning needs …

Will Return-To-Office Mandates Prevent Proximity Bias For Employees Working From Home?, Sue Williamson, Uma Jogulu, Judy Lundy, Helen Taylor
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This Practice and Policy article examines return-to-office mandates, the latest human resource controversy. These mandates are an organisational directive for employees who have been working from home to return to working in their employer's premise. Drawing on the literature and our research on working from home and hybrid working, we consider whether mandates may prevent proximity bias. We conclude that mandates requiring employees to return to the office or caps which limit working from home are not only unnecessary, but may have negative consequences. In particular, mandates may cause employee resentment, while caps limit flexibility and autonomy. We therefore do …

Secondary Mathematics Teachers’ Mathematical Competence, Vesife Hatisaru, Julia Collins, Steven Richardson, Constantine Lozanovski
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Whilst educational goals in recent years for mathematics education are foregrounded the development of mathematical competencies, little is known about mathematics teachers’ competencies. In this study, a group of practising teachers were asked to solve an algebra problem, and their solutions were analysed to determine the competencies apparent (or, equally importantly, absent) in these solutions. The most demonstrated competencies were devising strategies and mathematising, whilst communication and reasoning were mostly missed. The research provides a detailed methodology on how mathematical competencies can be assessed in the context of problem solving.
