A Sermon Preach’D At The Election Of The Governour, At Boston In New-England May 19th 1669., John Davenport, Paul Royster , Editor
Electronic Texts in American Studies
John Davenport’s A Sermon Preach’d at the Election is a notable and fascinating document on numerous counts. As a statement of Puritan political theory, it outlines the rights of the governed to self-preservation from abusive authority—a subject that would be more extensively explored in the years leading up to the Revolution. But as a document of its specific place and time—Boston in 1669—it bore a large part in the politico-theological controversies that followed the Synod of 1662 that recommended the adoption of the so-called Half-Way Covenant. Davenport’s long digression on the proper role of the state in convening “Councils” on …

A Brief Recognition Of New-Englands Errand Into The Wilderness: An Online Electronic Text Edition, Samuel Danforth, Paul Royster (Transcriber & Editor)
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
Samuel Danforth’s election sermon of 1670 is a classic example of the New England jeremiad. Addressed to the assembled delegates on the occasion of the election of officers for the Massachusetts General Court, it asks the very pointed question: “What is it that distinguisheth New-England from other Colonies and Plantations in America?” The answer, of course, is that the Puritan colonies (Massachusetts, Plymouth, Connecticut, and New Haven) were founded for the pursuit of religious ends by the reformed Protestant churches of England:
“You have solemnly professed before God, Angels and Men, that the Cause of your leaving your Country, Kindred …

Relation Of The Pequot Warres (1660), Lion Gardener, W. N. Chattin Carlton , Editor
Electronic Texts in American Studies
Lion Gardener (1599-1663) was an English military engineer, formerly in the service of the prince of Orange, who was hired by members of the Connecticut Company in 1635 to oversee construction of fortifications for their new colony. On arriving in Connecticut in early 1636, his first assignment was to finish and garrison Saybrook Fort, at the mouth of the Connecticut River. In August 1636, the area was visited by a punitive military expedition from the Massachusetts Bay Colony, led by John Endicott, intent upon intimidating the Pequot and Niantic tribes and demanding delivery of the killers of a group of …

An Alarum Of Vvar, Given To The Army, And To Their High Court Of Justice (So Called) By The Will Of God / Revealed In Elizabeth Poole, Sometime A Messenger Of The Lord To The Generall Councel, Concerning The Cure Of The Land, And The Manner Thereof
English Historical Library of Wallace Notestein
This text is "an alarum of war given to the army, and to their High Court of Justice by the will of God" by Elizabeth Pooll (also known as Poole), who is referred to as a messenger of the Lord. After the miss prophesying of King Charles' execution, Pooll wrote and distributed "An Alarum of War" defending her title as a prophetess. In the text, Poole addresses the "pretended Church" and Fellowship of Saints in London, who held disbelief in her ability to communicate with the lord after her false prediction. In the Postscript of the writing, Pooll further states …

"The selection below comes in two parts. The first, from Historia general de los hechos de los Castellanos en las Islas y Tierrafirme del Mar Océano, provides an overview account of the Indies, and includes a brief selection on De las Indias del Norte. The chapters “De la demarcación y division de las Indias occidentales” and “De las India del Norte” promote nationalistic pride for the Spanish crown and reflect the reverence held for conquistadors, even as they show restraint and objectivity in voice. The second part recounts Juan Ponce de Léon’s ill-fated expeditions in la Florida, one …

JADARA
Using grounded theory analysis, the current study identifies the perspectives of therapists and counselors regarding the nature of informal and formal resources supporting the treatment of deaf individuals with trauma. Nineteen counselors and therapists were interviewed, and accessibility, formal support, informal networks, and gaps in resources were identified as salient themes. Subsequent analysis identified concerns with confidentiality as a strong theme. This study emphasizes the need for counselors and therapists to become mindful of utilizing resources to support the treatment of trauma while being concerned with confidentiality.

The Schemes Of Adventuresses: The Abolition And Revival Of Common-Law Marriage, Charlotte K. Goldberg
William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice
Common-law marriage is about to go the way of the buggy whip. In 2005, Pennsylvania abolished common-law marriage and other state legislatures are considering following Pennsylvania's lead. Even if common-law marriage is abolished in all states, the problem of unmarried cohabitants seeking property rights arising from their relationships will still challenge the courts. In particular, because most claimants are women, the perception of them as either an "adventuress" or a "virtuous wife" will often determine whether they will attain shared property rights.
This article uses the California experience as an illustration of the evolution of the law from the abolition …
