An Alarum Of Vvar, Given To The Army, And To Their High Court Of Justice (So Called) By The Will Of God / Revealed In Elizabeth Poole, Sometime A Messenger Of The Lord To The Generall Councel, Concerning The Cure Of The Land, And The Manner Thereof

English Historical Library of Wallace Notestein

This text is "an alarum of war given to the army, and to their High Court of Justice by the will of God" by Elizabeth Pooll (also known as Poole), who is referred to as a messenger of the Lord. After the miss prophesying of King Charles' execution, Pooll wrote and distributed "An Alarum of War" defending her title as a prophetess. In the text, Poole addresses the "pretended Church" and Fellowship of Saints in London, who held disbelief in her ability to communicate with the lord after her false prediction. In the Postscript of the writing, Pooll further states …

"The selection below comes in two parts. The first, from Historia general de los hechos de los Castellanos en las Islas y Tierrafirme del Mar Océano, provides an overview account of the Indies, and includes a brief selection on De las Indias del Norte. The chapters “De la demarcación y division de las Indias occidentales” and “De las India del Norte” promote nationalistic pride for the Spanish crown and reflect the reverence held for conquistadors, even as they show restraint and objectivity in voice. The second part recounts Juan Ponce de Léon’s ill-fated expeditions in la Florida, one …

JADARA

Using grounded theory analysis, the current study identifies the perspectives of therapists and counselors regarding the nature of informal and formal resources supporting the treatment of deaf individuals with trauma. Nineteen counselors and therapists were interviewed, and accessibility, formal support, informal networks, and gaps in resources were identified as salient themes. Subsequent analysis identified concerns with confidentiality as a strong theme. This study emphasizes the need for counselors and therapists to become mindful of utilizing resources to support the treatment of trauma while being concerned with confidentiality.

The Schemes Of Adventuresses: The Abolition And Revival Of Common-Law Marriage, Charlotte K. Goldberg

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

Common-law marriage is about to go the way of the buggy whip. In 2005, Pennsylvania abolished common-law marriage and other state legislatures are considering following Pennsylvania's lead. Even if common-law marriage is abolished in all states, the problem of unmarried cohabitants seeking property rights arising from their relationships will still challenge the courts. In particular, because most claimants are women, the perception of them as either an "adventuress" or a "virtuous wife" will often determine whether they will attain shared property rights.

This article uses the California experience as an illustration of the evolution of the law from the abolition …

From Social Media To Campus Streets: The Impact Of Online Police Misconduct On Student Perceived Legitimacy Of Campus Police, Alexander J. Campbell

UROP Posters

Since 2020, the visibility of police misconduct on social media has increased dramatically. While these specific instances have led to national conversations about law enforcement, little continues to be known specifically about how this online presence shapes college students’ perceptions of their campus police specifically. In this study, we explore how viewing internet-based, and specifically social media content, depicting police misconduct influences university students’ views of campus police. By examining perceived legitimacy of campus police in a university setting, it allows researchers to examine an environment where police serve distinct roles and interact with their constituency in a unique way. …

The Aerosphere As A Network Connector Of Organisms And Their Diseases, Jeremy D. Ross, Eli S. Bridge, Diann J. Prosser, John Y. Takekawa

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Aeroecological processes, especially powered flight of animals, can rapidly connect biological communities across the globe. This can have profound consequences for evolutionary diversification, energy and nutrient transfers, and the spread of infectious diseases. The latter is of particular consequence for human populations, since migratory birds are known to host diseases which have a history of transmission into domestic poultry or even jumping to human hosts. In this chapter, we present a scenario under which a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) strain enters North America from East Asia via postmolting waterfowl migration. We use an agent-based model (ABM) to simulate the …

Wearable Electrochemical Sensors For Monitoring Performance Athletes, Kevin J. Fraser, Vincenzo F. Curtin, Shirley Coyle, Benjamin Schazmann, Robert Byrne, Fernando Benito-Lopez, Roisin M. Owens, George C. Malliaras, Dermot Diamond

Conference Papers

Nowadays, wearable sensors such as heart rate monitors and pedometers are in common use. The use of wearable systems such as these for personalized exercise regimes for health and rehabilitation is particularly interesting. In particular, the true potential of wearable chemical sensors, which for the real-time ambulatory monitoring of bodily fluids such as tears, sweat, urine and blood has not been realized. Here we present a brief introduction into the fields of ionogels and organic electrochemical transistors, and in particular, the concept of an OECT transistor incorporated into a sticking-plaster, along with a printable “ionogel” to provide a wearable biosensor …

Heightened Uncertainty And Determination: The “Trump Effect” And College Aspirations For Undocumented Students, Carolina Valdivia, Marisol Clark-Ibáñez, Lucas Schacht, Juan Duran, Sussana Mendoza

Journal of College Access

This article examines the educational experiences of undocumented high school students during the Trump administration—a time marked by the intensification and expansion of immigration enforcement practices. Drawing on 24 in-depth interviews, we find that undocumented high school students experienced increased instances of bullying near the time of the 2016 U.S. presidential elections. Our respondents also worried about the growing uncertainty surrounding immigration policies and the future of DACA. This uncertainty shaped their plans; many students felt compelled to prioritize working and delay starting college to make use of their work permit while they had access to DACA and build emergency …
