Liver failure represents a critical medical condition with a traditionally grim prognosis, where treatment options have been notably limited. Historically, liver transplantation has stood as the sole definitive cure, yet the stark disparity between the limited availability of liver donations and the high demand for such organs has significantly hampered its feasibility. This discrepancy has necessitated the exploration of hepatocyte transplantation as a temporary, supportive intervention. In light of this, our review delves into the burgeoning field of hepatocyte transplantation, with a focus on the latest advancements in maintaining hepatocyte function, co-microencapsulation techniques, xenogeneic hepatocyte transplantation, and the selection of …

Roadmaps To Post-Communist Neoliberalism: The Case Of The Baltic States, Jokubas Salyga Jan 2024

Roadmaps To Post-Communist Neoliberalism: The Case Of The Baltic States, Jokubas Salyga

Political Science Faculty Publications

This article uncovers the pre-1991 origins of Baltic neoliberal regimes. It highlights the role of the communication networks between reformist economists in the Baltic National Fronts and social forces advocating neoliberalism in Scandinavia and the United States. We assert that those networks functioned as the early carriers of ideational and policy change, even if reform contents were authored by domestic rather than transnational agencies. Firstly, the article previews the structural factors conducive to network formation. Secondly, it examines the networks by highlighting cross-national differences. Finally, it chronicles the idiosyncratic paths of neoliberal reformers’ ascendance to the positions of influence.

“Senator . . . I’M Singaporean!”: Privacy Regulation And Data Transfers In Cross-Border Corporations, Michelle Norris Jan 2024

“Senator . . . I’M Singaporean!”: Privacy Regulation And Data Transfers In Cross-Border Corporations, Michelle Norris

Chapman Law Review

A recent congressional hearing involving social media companies, including TikTok and Facebook, made headlines when Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas grilled the TikTok CEO, Shou Zi Chew, repeatedly asking him if he had ties to China or its Communist Party. The Singaporean CEO, who has served as TikTok’s CEO since 2021, repeatedly replied, “Senator . . . I’m Singaporean!” While Senator Cotton, evoking McCarthy-era sentiments, was severely criticized for his racism and what appears to be a lack of understanding about corporate governance, another problem emerged.

TikTok, which is a subsidiary of the Chinese-owned ByteDance, operates in countries around the …

The Literary Landscape For Twentieth-Century Spanish-Speaking Lds Poets, Gabriel González Núñez Jan 2024

The Literary Landscape For Twentieth-Century Spanish-Speaking Lds Poets, Gabriel González Núñez

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

Spanish is the second-most spoken language among Latter-day Saints, but relatively little is known about Mormon literature in this language, either its current status or its history. This absence is evident in the key surveys on Mormon literature that have been carried out. For example, when Eugene England considered the prospects of Mormon literature in his landmark essay on its history and future, he looked ahead at a mostly US-centric and fully English-language literary horizon.1 This makes sense in the context in which he was writing. In the English language, and in the United States in particular, Mormon literature …

An Effective Method For Long-Term Control Of American Bullfrogs Syntopic With Special-Status Native Amphibians In California, Usa, Jeff A. Alvarez, Jeffery T. Wilcox Jan 2024

An Effective Method For Long-Term Control Of American Bullfrogs Syntopic With Special-Status Native Amphibians In California, Usa, Jeff A. Alvarez, Jeffery T. Wilcox

Human–Wildlife Interactions

American bullfrogs (Lithobates catesbeianus) are invasive in western North America and are well established in California, USA, where they are widespread. This invasive species has been implicated in the decrease of native amphibian populations and is believed to have contributed to the decline of threatened and endangered amphibians regionally. We utilized air rifles, tin alloy pellets, and 2 shooters to systematically control L. catesbeianus in both lentic and lotic habitat types within 2 counties in California. We visited sites monthly (April through November) for approximately 8 and 14 years to lethally target and remove L. catesbeianus …

Colorful Lizards And The Conflict Of Collection, Colin M. Goodman, Natalie M. Claunch, Zachary T. Steele, Diane J. E. Sturgeon, Christina M. Romagosa Jan 2024

Colorful Lizards And The Conflict Of Collection, Colin M. Goodman, Natalie M. Claunch, Zachary T. Steele, Diane J. E. Sturgeon, Christina M. Romagosa

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Invasive species threaten biodiversity, and their management is economically burdensome. Research on the indirect effects of introduced species are often focused on indirect ecological effects, with little focus on the more difficult to capture but critically important societal impacts. Often understated are the social costs of invasive species such as conflicts between invasive species managers and public stakeholders. Chameleons (Chamaeleonidae) are popular in the pet trade and have been introduced throughout Florida, USA, and their presence often attracts private collectors. After locating a population of panther chameleons (Furcifer pardalis) within a suburban neighborhood in central Florida, we administered …

Flashtags: Evaluating A Novel Deterrent To Reduce Livestock Depredation, C. Aaron Bott, Stewart W. Breck, Tom W. Murphy, Brad A. Freking, Carlos A. López González, David Prause, Corey Peavey, Albert Sommers, Coke Landers, Julie K. Young

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Social tolerance of carnivores can be improved by preventing conflicts through nonlethal predator deterrents (e.g., livestock protection dogs [Canis lupus familiaris] and human presence) that have been used for centuries. However, many livestock producers feel the existing preventative methods are inadequate for extensive production systems where livestock can be spread widely and have less human supervision. To address this issue, we developed and tested a new nonlethal tool called FlashTags to reduce livestock predation. FlashTags are ear tags worn by livestock that flash a random-light pattern at night when motion-triggered. In the first year, we tested the devices …

The Ban On Trophy Hunting In Botswana: Local Communities’ Perceptions, Lelokwane Lockie Mokgalo, Peet Van Der Merwe Jan 2024

The Ban On Trophy Hunting In Botswana: Local Communities’ Perceptions, Lelokwane Lockie Mokgalo, Peet Van Der Merwe

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Economic pressures on rural livelihoods in Botswana are ever-increasing, especially for peripheral areas where resources harnessed for tourism purposes are prevalent. One of the avenues to achieve this balancing act is the Community-Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) program of Botswana, which devolved management of resources to local communities to incentivise conservation through hunting tourism. However, due to questions over hunting sustainability as a conservation tool by conservation non-governmental organizations and animal rights groups, trophy hunting was banned in Botswana in 2014. The resultant impacts were felt not only by the hunting industry but also by communities through the loss of …

Public Benefits And Private Costs: Implications For Moose Management In The Adirondacks, Heidi E. Kretser, Nancy A. Connelly, T. Bruce Lauber, Richard C. Stedman, Jeremy Hurst, David W. Kramer, James H. Stickles

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Private lands beyond protected area boundaries have long been recognized as important to sustaining wildlife as a public resource. However, private landowners may perceive disproportionate negative impacts from wildlife sustained by these lands, and these perceptions may impede effective management. We explore perceived issues related to managing moose (Alces alces), a Species of Greatest Conservation Need in New York State (NYS), USA, as a public benefit while simultaneously addressing private landowners’ concerns. We examined the public benefits of moose and attitudes toward potential management actions using surveys of NYS residents and Northern New York (NNY) residential landowners. We …

Dust Management At An Active Construction Area Affects Monarch Distribution, Amy W. O'Donnell, Jeffery D. Sullivan, Carl R. Callahan, Peter C. Mcgowan, Diann J. Prosser Jan 2024

Dust Management At An Active Construction Area Affects Monarch Distribution, Amy W. O'Donnell, Jeffery D. Sullivan, Carl R. Callahan, Peter C. Mcgowan, Diann J. Prosser

Human–Wildlife Interactions

The North American population of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) is experiencing dramatic declines, necessitating investigations into challenges facing this species that can be resolved through management actions. For instance, dust made airborne by heavy equipment driving along a dirt road can settle on roadside vegetation, resulting in reduced use by monarchs. Dust accumulation on areas where floral nectaries such as leaves, stems, and flowers may be present could reduce the ability of pollinators, such as monarchs, to access nectar from flowering plants needed during migration. One such challenge was observed on Poplar Island, an island restoration project located in …

Modern Disaster Fragmentation, Abigail E. André Jan 2024

Modern Disaster Fragmentation, Abigail E. André

Fordham Law Review

Natural disasters test us. They exist at the intersection of nature, law, and society to show us where our systems are failing. Beyond physical damage, they magnify weaknesses in our socioeconomic and legal systems. In an attempt to leverage the lessons disasters bring, this Article analyzes the administrative institutions that govern disaster relief from the perspective of law, history, equity, and institutional design. This intersectional analysis uncovers a system fragmented by centuries of disorganization and infused with socioeconomic discrimination. Minor revisions cannot fix our federal approach to disaster relief: an institutional overhaul is required to achieve good governance.

Front-Line Management In The Irish Public Service: Realities, Challenges, And The Role Of Social Capital, Arpita Pal Jan 2024

Front-Line Management In The Irish Public Service: Realities, Challenges, And The Role Of Social Capital, Arpita Pal

Doctoral

This study investigates the evolving role of Front-Line Managers (FLMs) within the Irish public sector as they adapt to devolved Human Resources Management (HRM) responsibilities amidst a backdrop of fiscal austerity, staff reductions, and organisational restructuring. Policy initiatives such as the One Civil Service Approach and the Civil Service Renewal Plan have shifted HRM responsibilities to FLMs without adequate formal training or resources, compelling them to rely heavily on social capital—networks of relationships and informal interactions—to bridge knowledge gaps and manage operational demands.

Potential Implication Of Serum Lipid Levels As Predictive Indicators For Monitoring Oral Lichen Planus, Zhifeng Song, Xuan Xiao, Shangfeng Liu

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Compelling evidence indicates that dyslipidemia is positively associated with oral lichen planus (OLP). The types and magnitude of lipid metabolism disturbance in peripheral blood of OLP patients have been investigated in different studies. Yet, consensus on how these different lipid components varied in levels for the development of OLP lesions has not been reached so far. Herein, a total of 8 eligible studies were recognized, which enrolled 533 cases of OLP and 499 healthy controls. The analysis showed that the average total triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels were considerably higher, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol …

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose Osteoclast differentiation is crucial for orchestrating both tooth movement and the maintenance of bone density. Therefore, the current study sought to explore the impact of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on osteoclast differentiation, functional gene expression, molecular signaling pathways, and orthodontic tooth movement in clinical settings. Materials and methods The RAW 264.7 cell line served as the precursor for osteoclasts, and these cells underwent irradiation using a 808-nm LLLT. Osteoclast differentiation was assessed through tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining. Functional gene expression levels were evaluated using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) while signaling molecules were examined through Western …

Free Buccal Fat Pad Graft For The Bone Defect Filling Of Medication-Related Osteonecrosis Of The Jaws: A Novel Surgical Approach, Ken-Chung Chen, Jen-Wei Cheng, Kai-Yuan Hsiao, Meng-Yen Chen, Tze-Ta Huang Jan 2024

Free Buccal Fat Pad Graft For The Bone Defect Filling Of Medication-Related Osteonecrosis Of The Jaws: A Novel Surgical Approach, Ken-Chung Chen, Jen-Wei Cheng, Kai-Yuan Hsiao, Meng-Yen Chen, Tze-Ta Huang

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Surgical intervention for medication-related jaw osteonecrosis (MRONJ) is currently the main treatment method, offering a higher healing rate than conservative approaches. However, the management of bony defects after sequestrectomy remains a challenging issue due to poor vascularization from the drug effect. The use of pedicled buccal fat pad (PBFP) for filling bone defects has become common and effective but is limited to the posterior maxillary region. To add to the advantages of the buccal fat pad, we explored a novel treatment approach using a free buccal fat pad (FBFP) to fill bone defects other than the posterior maxilla. While …

Trying To Be Funny: A Conversation Analysis Of Humor In Efl University Students’ Role-Plays, Siriprapa Srithep, Patharaorn Patharakorn

PASAA

Through the lens of conversational analysis (CA), humor or funniness is not an inherent property of a message, nor an internal state of any social action, but as something interactionally achieved (Glenn, 2003). Teachers are often encouraged to utilize humor to reduce anxiety, lower affective filters, and make language more “memorable” (Bell, 2005; Tarone, 2000; Ziyaeemehr et al., 2011). In the current research endeavor, we focused on an activity called “Drama and Creativity,” an extracurricular activity which is offered to firstyear undergraduate students at a public university in Thailand. During the activity, students worked in groups of three to four …

Integrating Reflective Practice Into Undergraduate Teacher Education Programmes In Elt: A No-Lose Deal For Thai University, Andrzej Cirocki, Pariwat Imsa-Ard Jan 2024

Integrating Reflective Practice Into Undergraduate Teacher Education Programmes In Elt: A No-Lose Deal For Thai University, Andrzej Cirocki, Pariwat Imsa-Ard

PASAA

The concept of reflection is probably as old as educational discourse itself. It is an inextricable element of teaching and learning that enables teachers to identify and solve problems related to their teaching practice or learn more about various aspects of their profession. Therefore, to fully prepare reflective language practitioners, it is essential for reflection to be embedded in teacher education programmes in English Language Teaching (ELT). With this in mind, the current contribution begins by operationalising the concept of reflective practice and describing reflective practitioners. It then presents models of reflective teaching, synthesises previous research on reflective practice, and …
