Abstract 1

Introduction: Central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) affects how a listener understands speech even though their peripheral auditory system is intact. Case Presentation: An adult female was seen for a CAPD evaluation after experiencing recent listening difficulties following an automobile accident while 20 weeks pregnant. Results from a comprehensive audiological evaluation revealed audiometrically normal hearing in both ears. Results from the CAPD evaluation suggested a prosodic deficit. Discussion: Although results from testing were consistent with a prosodic deficit, the patient’s case history, original complaints, and recommendations were more consistent with an integration deficit. Conclusion: This case demonstrates that clinicians …

Nuestras Voces: Representation And Visibility Of Latinx Women Archaeologists In The U.S., Milsy Westendorff

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

According to the 2020 Society for American Archaeology Members Assessment Survey, Latinx individuals comprise the largest minority group within archaeology. However, there is no scholarship or literature focusing specifically on the experiences of Latinx women archaeologists based in the U.S. This research fills in that gap through ethnographic interviews with 9 Latinx women archaeologists. By centering their experiences, we are able to see how their background and identity impacts and influences the way they conduct archaeology and the questions they ask, the barriers that are unique to them as Latinx women, why there is such a lack of representation of …

Short, Full, Best: Analysis Of Different Conference Papers, Miguel Williams Jan 2024

Short, Full, Best: Analysis Of Different Conference Papers, Miguel Williams

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Research, publish, repeat. This is the basic cycle of anyone in academia. Individuals in academia conduct research, write up your research into a paper or journal article, submit to a conference or journal, and repeat the process. If you're skilled you may even obtain the coveted best paper award from the conference. In this research, I compare full papers to short papers and full papers to best papers. I start by fine-tuning three transformer models for classification capabilities. After I calculate lexical diversity and readability metrics of the papers, I use the features to train three traditional machine learning models. …

The Role Of Self-Assertion And Academic Self-Efficacy In Predicting Acculturation Of Saudi Students Studying In The United States, Abdulmohsen Hasen Alomran

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation study examines the acculturation experiences of Saudi Arabian students pursuing higher education in the United States. It investigates the relationships among students’ acculturation strategies, self-assertion, and academic self-efficacy, while exploring the moderating effects of English proficiency and length of stay. The study is grounded in Berry et al.’s model of acculturation, which proposes four acculturation strategies: integration (maintaining one’s original cultural identity while participating in the host society), assimilation (adopting the host culture while relinquishing one’s heritage culture), separation (preserving the original culture while avoiding contact with the host culture), and marginalization (rejecting both cultures). These strategies are …

Harmony And Turmoil: Comparative Study Of Political Stability In Cambodia And Uganda, Pheanusa Satra Ty Jan 2024

Harmony And Turmoil: Comparative Study Of Political Stability In Cambodia And Uganda, Pheanusa Satra Ty

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Authoritarian regimes have several mechanisms that enforce that rule. Rooted in Gerszewski's “The Three Pillars of Stability,” this thesis utilizes the theoretical framework that explain how the three main strategies of repression, co-optation and legitimation are used by Cambodia and Uganda. Each of these strategies or “authoritarian pillars” are used to different degrees by the regimes of the countries. The difference in their outcome, however, lies in the stabilization process of the pillars in the regimes. Combining primary and secondary qualitative data, I will demonstrate how Cambodia’s balancing of their pillars was more successful than Uganda’s. The former managed to …

Cues And Clues: How Humor Targets Classify Joker Intent, Jared Elijah Patrick Wilson Jan 2024

Cues And Clues: How Humor Targets Classify Joker Intent, Jared Elijah Patrick Wilson

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

When targeted by a joke, the target has an evaluation to make: is this joke an affiliative tease or an aggressive joke? While both are characterized by a humorous but relevant provocation, a tease is intended to communicate face-protective information or general affiliation (e.g., Keltner, 2001) while an aggressive joke is intended to enhance the self by socially demeaning another (e.g., Martin et al., 2003). The target must engage in everyday mind-reading in an attempt to accurately classify such a joke, considering information such as off-record marker usage and the reputation of the commenter, but little research has been done …

Kidney-Targeted Mrna Nanoparticles: Exploration Of The Mrna Loading Capacity Of A Polymeric Mesoscale Platform Employing Various Classes Of Excipients, Arantxa Roach

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Mesoscale nanoparticles (MNPs) for the therapeutic relief of renal ailments can be modulated to deliver various payloads – including biomolecules such as mRNA. In preparing mRNA loaded-MNPs, we observed a point of saturation for mRNA loading of these particles, when aiming to increase the payload per particle. Here, we aimed to circumvent this limitation by incorporating various excipients that interact with mRNA for increased loading. These interactions involved the reduction of mRNA electrostatic repulsion and improving mRNA stability during formulation and release. Thereafter, we tested the encapsulation efficiency of these modified particles and compared it to our original formulation. Further, …

Judges As Lawyers, Deirdre M. Smith Jan 2024

Judges As Lawyers, Deirdre M. Smith

Faculty Publications

The integrity of the American legal system and, thereby, of our democracy rests on the shoulders of the judiciary. It is widely understood that the roles of jurist and advocate are incompatible and that the fairness and legitimacy of our court systems require maintaining clear boundaries between those roles. Accordingly, an essential feature of every state’s judicial conduct code is a prohibition on the practice of law by judges. However, many states have carved out exceptions to this prohibition to allow part-time judges sitting in low-level trial courts to supplement their modest judicial compensation by practicing law. The rationale for …

Faculty Publications

With cryptocurrency Bitcoin’s prices continuing to hit record highs, overall public interest in NFTs will likely increase significantly as it ordinarily has in the past. But before purchasing an NFT, it is important that consumers understand exactly what they are buying. Many assume their purchase will include the associated art that is shown in the individual NFT marketplace listing, whether it be a CryptoKitty, a Bored Ape, or a single video clip from an NBA game. However, in reality, most buyers are getting little more than a few lines of code on the blockchain. What explains these misconceptions, especially when …

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

When there is collinearity among the regressors in gamma regression models, we present a new two-parameter ridge estimator in this study. We look into the new estimator's mean squared error characteristics. Additionally, we offer several theorems to contrast the new estimators with the current ones. To compare the estimatorsunder various collinearity designs in terms of mean squared error, we run a Monte Carlo simulation analysis. We also offer a real data application to demonstrate the usefulness of the new estimator. The results from simulations and actual data reveal thatthe proposed estimator is superior to competing estimators.

While little research has been conducted on Asian undocumented students in higher education, it was the powerful story of an Asian undocumented high school student, Tereza Lee, that inspired Senator Richard Durbin to co-author immigration legislation known as the 2001 DREAM Act. Tereza’s story represents an important counter-story to what many perceive as the dominant narrative and a widely-held misconception that issues of undocumented immigrants and undocumented students only affect Latinos. The purpose of this study is to include Tereza’s narrative as a solution to the problem of its exclusion in higher education. Asian critical race theory centers the voices …

Magnetometer-Less State-Estimation Of A Mobile Robot Using Cascaded Kalman Filters, Tommy Le Jan 2024

Magnetometer-Less State-Estimation Of A Mobile Robot Using Cascaded Kalman Filters, Tommy Le

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Localization, or state-estimation algorithms, are one of the most important aspects inthe development of autonomous mobile robots. Typical localization requires an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) along with an external reference, such as GPS (Global Positioning System) for outdoor applications. In indoor applications, the GPS data is not accessible so many mobile robot implementations turn to magnetometers to provide additional pose information. However, in the context of miniaturizing robotic systems, magnetometers are not always reliable due to their proximity to motors and other electronics, causing magnetic distortion and in turn, incorrect pose information. To address this issue, this thesis proposes a …
