Curatorial Practice Project For Art Exhibition "Check In Planet Colonization Plan”, Jiajing Ji Jan 2024

Curatorial Practice Project For Art Exhibition "Check In Planet Colonization Plan”, Jiajing Ji

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

As digital life increasingly shapes how we engage with culture, Check-in Culture has emerged as a powerful lens through which identity, space, and symbolic value are negotiated. Far from mere location tags, Check-ins on platforms like Instagram and Xiaohongshu are performative acts—blending personal branding, viral humor, and algorithmic visibility. This study examines how ordinary places, such as the now-iconic “Chengdu Disney,” are transformed into cultural landmarks through participatory remixing and meme-driven attention. To explore these dynamics, the “CHECK IN Planet Colonization Plan” online exhibition serves as both a case study and a curatorial experiment, merging artistic interpretation, social media interaction, and …

Relationships with family members can be a vital source of support, and significant stressor, that contributes to mental health outcomes among transgender and gender diverse young adults who are racially and ethnically marginalized (TGD REMY). Guided by a life history narrative approach, this qualitative study explored family affirmation and rejection among TGD REMY across three aims: (a) how TGD REMY define their experiences of family rejection and/or affirmation, (b) whether and how experiences of rejection/affirmation change throughout the lifetime, and (c) whether and how experiences of rejection/affirmation differ by each family member. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 TGD REMY …

The Health Literacy Practices Of Rehabilitation Providers Of Perioperative Orthopedic Education, Allen Keener Jan 2024

The Health Literacy Practices Of Rehabilitation Providers Of Perioperative Orthopedic Education, Allen Keener

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

Health literacy is the ability to utilize information to make decisions about one’s health or the health of others. It is estimated that a large percentage of the population has inadequate health literacy, yet healthcare professionals, including rehabilitation providers often do not have procedures in place for assessing and addressing the health literacy of their patients. Related to orthopedic patients, a large portion of the interventions are educational in nature. Therefore, it is important that the health literacy of orthopedic patients be considered when addressing their needs perioperatively. There is little currently published related to health literacy among rehabilitation providers …

Equestrian Activities And Health Outcomes: A Multidimensional Analysis Of Physical Activity, Injury Patterns, And Occupational Concerns, Michaela Keener

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

Over 6 million participate in equestrian activities each year. However, research focusing on the benefits and risks around equestrian activities is limited to epidemiological research and small sample sizes. Equestrian participation ranges from recreational to occupational, and little research has evaluated how the risks of participation change based on the level of participation. Special consideration needs to be given to the occupational equestrians as equestrian participation is their livelihood. The first two aims of this study were to evaluate the physical activity engagement, perceptions of equestrian as a sport, acute injury history, and chronic pain frequency of equestrians across all …

The Effect Of Adding Perceptual-Cognitive Load To Assessments And Intervention Strategies In Healthy Adults, Ke'la H. Porter Jan 2024

The Effect Of Adding Perceptual-Cognitive Load To Assessments And Intervention Strategies In Healthy Adults, Ke'la H. Porter

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

In collegiate athletes, approximately one in four injuries require more than seven days before the athlete can return to full participation. Additionally, there are significant long-term consequences associated with these injuries, such as pain and osteoarthritis. Despite the role that the sensorimotor system and cognitive function play in athletic competition, the interaction between these systems in relation to sport-related injury is commonly overlooked. The sensorimotor system integrates and processes sensory, motor, and central mechanisms to produce a motor response. Further, cognition constructs, such as visual attention or processing speed, allow athletes to navigate the chaotic sporting environment. When there are …

Physical And Psychosocial Factors Related To Firefighter Musculoskeletal Disorders, Jennifer Ellen Tinsley Kubala Jan 2024

Physical And Psychosocial Factors Related To Firefighter Musculoskeletal Disorders, Jennifer Ellen Tinsley Kubala

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

Career firefighters must perform physically and psychologically challenging duties in unpredictable and dangerous conditions. Previous investigations have found that firefighters suffer nearly 4 times the recorded musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) and workplace injuries compared to private and public sector workers, and take approximately 1.5 days longer to return to normal work. Thus, the burden of firefighter MSD experiences has been a growing area of exploration. The few investigations that have concurrently examined physical and psychosocial consequences experienced by firefighters have found a positive relationship between increased occupational stress reports and MSD experiences. However, these investigations, as well as those that individually …

Key To Success: A Comprehensive Examination Of Support Personnel In School-Based Speech-Language Telepractice, Hannah Douglass Jan 2024

Key To Success: A Comprehensive Examination Of Support Personnel In School-Based Speech-Language Telepractice, Hannah Douglass

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

In the school setting, the telepractice team primarily consists of the clinician and a support person known as a telefacilitator. Though telepractice is an accepted method for delivering school-based speech-language therapy, many barriers to the integration of telepractice as routine care persist. A major barrier is clinicians' acceptance of telehealth. However, there has been limited investigation of factors that influence clinician acceptance. Another barrier is related to support personnel. Telefacilitators have been shown to be an integral part of the telepractice program. Yet there are significant gaps in knowledge regarding the roles and responsibilities, staffing and management, and barriers/facilitators to …

Engineering is becoming increasingly cross-disciplinary, requiring students to develop skills in multiple engineering disciplines (e.g., mechanical engineering students having to learn the basics of electronics, instrumentation, and coding) and interprofessional skills to integrate perspectives from people outside their field. In the workplace, engineering teams are frequently multidisciplinary, and often, people from outside of engineering are part of the team that brings a product to market. Additionally, teams are often diverse in age, race, gender, and in other areas. Teams that creatively utilize the contrasting perspectives and ideas arising from these differences can positively affect team performance and generate solutions effective …

Protecting Students’ Right To Listen By Statute, Noah C. Chauvin Jan 2024

Protecting Students’ Right To Listen By Statute, Noah C. Chauvin

Journal of Race, Gender, and Ethnicity

This article argues that First Amendment challenges to book bans in public school libraries, based on the right to receive information, are unlikely to succeed. Even if such bans clearly violate students' rights, constitutional litigation is slow and unpredictable, and courts may not consistently support these challenges. Therefore, instead of relying solely on litigation, opponents of book bans should pursue legislative change. The paper proposes a model statute that advocates and legislators can use to ban book bans. It also acknowledges the complexities of terminology and scope, defining "book bans" as decisions to restrict or remove materials from school libraries, …

How Poor Leadership And Favoritism Intersect To Create Toxic Work Environments, Simone Williams, Lora Del Rio Jan 2024

How Poor Leadership And Favoritism Intersect To Create Toxic Work Environments, Simone Williams, Lora Del Rio

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Discussions about leadership in academic libraries rarely focus on the negative; they mostly focus on best practices of leadership. There is hardly any discussion of poor leadership, nor is there a rigorous discussion of concerning behaviors that poor leaders engage in, such as favoritism. Concomitantly, there is little to no discussion about how to identify and address behaviors that poor leaders engage in and how academic libraries can change toxic institutional culture. In this chapter, we are interested in defining poor leadership and favoritism to change toxic institutional cultures and give voice to those who are affected by poor leadership …

Asphaltenes are organic compounds that aggregate in crude oil with two dominant molecular architectures: archipelago and continental. Continental architectures possess a single uniform island structure composed of aromatic rings in contrast to archipelago architectures with aromatic cores interconnected through aliphatic chains. The structural composition of asphaltenes varies globally due to geographical differences, posing challenges in their classification due to a lack of uniformity. This study is the first known exploration of using image-based supervised machine learning, particularly the ResNet-50 neural network, for the binary classification of asphaltenes into continental and archipelago motifs. 255 continental and archipelago models underwent structural augmentations …

Tunable Metasurface For Efficient Harmonic Generation And Amplitude Modulation, Steve Mares

Masters Theses

The manipulation of microwave signals is critical in the information and communication technology industry. This research investigates the application of time-coding techniques on metasurfaces to achieve tunable control of electromagnetic signal transmission. The integration of mounted PIN diodes facilitates dynamic modulation of signal behavior. Both passive (without PIN diodes) and active (with PIN diodes) metasurfaces were analyzed through simulations using Ansys HFSS and validated with experimental measurements. A major contribution of this work is the design and testing of active metasurfaces that leverage PIN diodes for harmonic generation and amplitude modulation. The study reveals a clear relationship between modulating signal …

Consumers are inundated with opportunities to become engaged with marketing-generated stories, from watching an influencer detail her adventures abroad or a commercial about a military service member who makes it home just in time for the holidays. When consumers become so engaged with a story that they begin to connect with the story characters and imagine what will happen next, they experience a process known as narrative transportation, which has significant positive outcomes for marketers. Given the value that narrative transportation provides to marketers, we conduct a systematic literature review to both synthesize and provide direction on the literature of …

(In)Attention To Attractive Brand Alternatives, Danielle J. Brick, Veronica L. Thomas Jan 2024

(In)Attention To Attractive Brand Alternatives, Danielle J. Brick, Veronica L. Thomas

Marketing Faculty Publications

Understanding how consumers maintain their brand relationships has important implications for marketers as committed consumers contribute significant value to firms. In the present research, we propose and test one such way consumers protect their brand relationships, namely through attentional avoidance of attractive alternative partners. Across multiple studies, we find support for our theory that committed consumers avoid attending to alternative brand partners by recalling less about and spending less time focused on attractive alternatives. We further find that this inattention occurs because consumers view the competing brand as a threat to the consumer’s current relationship. In addition, we investigate a …
