On The Potential Benefits Of Wide Dynamic Range Compression For Workers In Loud Environments: A Scoping Literature Review, Solenn Ollivier, Hugues Nélisse, Jeremie Voix

Revues de littérature, synthèses de connaissances

This literature review investigates the application of wide dynamic range compression (WDRC) to enhance hearing protection and communication among workers in a noisy environment. Given the prevalence of noise-induced hearing loss, there is a major need to provide workers, with or at risk of hearing loss, with a solution that not only protects their hearing but also facilitates effective communication. WDRC, which amplifies softer sounds while limiting louder sounds, appears a promising approach. This review explores 46 articles investigating WDRC performance on speech intelligibility and loudness perception in noise for individuals with normal hearing or mild to moderate hearing loss. …

The Dating Experiences Of Black Women, Sarah Ish Jan 2024

The Dating Experiences Of Black Women, Sarah Ish

Women's and Gender Studies Theses

My thesis centers around Black women’s dating and hookup experiences at Loyola Marymount University (LMU). I distributed a survey with 44 questions; five demographic questions and eight factors that include questions revolving around being romantically and/or sexually rejected based on their race/ethnicity. After three weeks of collecting data, my research has revealed patterns involving negative attitudes towards dating apps, admissions of hopelessness in finding an intimate partner, being fetishized by white people, and feelings of betrayal when/if a person of color expressed rejection based on their race/ethnicity. The implementation of feminist theory and feminist scholars such as Audre Lorde, Patricia …

The Development Of Intervention Toolkits For Non-Specialized Personnel And Families Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder In La Paz, Bolivia, Margaret Mahoney

Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctorate - Doctoral Capstone Symposium

INTRODUCTION: There has been an increase in the understanding of autism-spectrum disorder (ASD) and corresponding occupational therapy (OT) interventions; however, much of this has yet to be implemented in several resource-limited countries, including Bolivia. Parent-mediated interventions (PMIs) are being heralded as a promising approach to address this gap. Through the creation of toolkits for non-specialized personnel (e.g., parents, teachers), the purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project is to enhance the occupational engagement and quality of life for children with ASD and their families in La Paz, Bolivia. METHODS: Pre-surveys were administered to parents of children with ASD at the …

The White Way To Hire Presidents: Racism In The Search And Appointment Process, Román Liera, Cheryl D. Ching, Raquel M. Rall, Megan M. Chase, Estela M. Bensimon

Department of Educational Leadership Scholarship and Creative Works

In this critical qualitative study, we draw on interviews with sitting Presidents of Color in one state to explore the racialized dimensions of the college and university presidential search and appointment process. Informed by Ray’s racialized organization tenets of whiteness as a credential and racialized agency, our findings show that participants felt hyper-scrutinized and judged against white, masculine standards, norms, and expectations and had to endure explicit and implicit undermining of their potential for campus leadership. Our findings provide practice implications and recommendations for making presidential searches and appointments in higher education more racially equitable and inclusive.

Background: Loss to follow-up (LTFU) from tuberculosis (TB) treatment and care is a significant public health problem. It is important to understand what drives LTFU in children – a population whose treatment and management depend on an adult caregiver – to better provide support services to families affected by TB.

Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study of household contacts in Lima, Peru (2009–12). Using multilevel logistic regression analysis, we explored individual-level characteristics of children and their adult household members with TB disease to identify risk factors for LTFU among children initiated on treatment for TB.

Results: A total of …

Studying these topics allows our group to make recommendations as to how medical experts should go about interacting with members of the Generation Z and Baby Boomer generations respectively, based on how historical events have influenced their attitudes towards mental health topics, their perceived …

Integrated Building Assessment To Enable Retrofit Design, Fabrication And Verification: A Drone-Based Approach, Paul Crovella Jan 2024

Integrated Building Assessment To Enable Retrofit Design, Fabrication And Verification: A Drone-Based Approach, Paul Crovella

SyracuseCoE

Buildings account for approximately 40% of annual greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. In New York State, approximately 80% of residential and commercial buildings were constructed before the emerging energy codes in the 1970s [1]. Therefore, there is a significant need for affordable and scalable building retrofit solutions with low embodied emissions to meet the targets in the NYS Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act of 2019. A building energy audit is the initial step to quantify a building's energy performance and reveal its energy-saving potential. However, performing a high-level energy audit requires detailed field analysis and is often …

Predentin's Influence On Clastic Cell Behavior In Human External Cervical Resorption: Evidence From A Case Study, Masaki Arioka, Toshihiro Noma, Shohei Yoshimoto, Yasuhiko Kamura

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract External cervical resorption (ECR) is an aggressive disease characterized by resorption of the tooth root structure. While the pericanalar resorption-resistant sheet (PRRS) impedes ECR progression towards the pulp, the underlying mechanisms of its protective role in human teeth remain unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the pathology of ECR in a 31-year-old female patient by employing radiographic, histological, and immunohistochemical analyses of an extracted tooth. Histological examination revealed that the PRRS comprised dentin, predentin, and reparative bone-like tissue. Notably, clastic cells were observed on the surfaces of all three tissues within the same specimens. Immunohistochemical staining for cathepsin K …

Coping With Coppa: Exploring Alternatives To The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, Andrew Parra Jan 2024

Coping With Coppa: Exploring Alternatives To The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, Andrew Parra

Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality

The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA) stands as one of the greatest protectors of children’s privacy for nearly twenty-five years. However, COPPA has struggled to keep pace with technological changes during this time, and the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the shortcomings of COPPA regulations as children were forced to spend increased amounts of time in digital spaces. As the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is set to make changes to COPPA, it is necessary to consider what changes would be most beneficial to protect children. This paper will explore the current regulatory framework, its strengths and weaknesses, and then …

Exploring The Link Between Self-Image And Eating Disorders In Female Students At Belmont University, Caitlin Rain Roberts

SPARK Symposium Presentations

Introduction: Body image concerns among college students are a significant issue, often contributing to eating disorders as societal pressures intensify during young adulthood (Kapoor, 2022). Self-image influences eating behaviors, psychological perceptions of nutrition, and the development of disordered eating patterns (Kapoor, 2022). Understanding the link between body image and eating disorders is essential for creating effective interventions that support mental and physical well-being during this critical life stage. Methods: This study examined the relationship between body image dissatisfaction and eating disorder behaviors among undergraduate female students at Belmont University in Fall 2024. Using a cross-sectional survey with a mixed-methods approach, …

Unveiling Spanish Language Attitudes In A Los Angeles School And A Third-Generation Multigenerational Mexican-American Family, Eric Alvarez Jan 2024

Unveiling Spanish Language Attitudes In A Los Angeles School And A Third-Generation Multigenerational Mexican-American Family, Eric Alvarez

International Journal of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest

This chapter unearths some of the diverse attitudes towards Spanish of a third-generation child in Los Angeles (L.A.), California, her family members, and school personnel. L.A. is a tension-ridden contact zone (Pratt, 1991) where Spanish has traditionally been subjugated and is still a lesser-taught language (LTL) despite decades of research showing that bilingual education positively impacts student attitudes (Potowski & Muñoz-Basols, 2020). Lack of continuity (Caloi & Torregrossa, 2021) in formal instruction and inconsistent heritage Spanish use in the home may entail divergent attitudes towards Spanish, possibly hindering multigenerational transmission. Decades-long turbulent California language policies (CLP) (Macias, 2001) have consistently …

Redefining Ed Utilization: A Rabies Post-Exposure Prophylaxis Perspective, David Bennington Jan 2024

Redefining Ed Utilization: A Rabies Post-Exposure Prophylaxis Perspective, David Bennington

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Rabies, though rare in the United States, remains a lethal viral disease with significant public health implications. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) through timely administration of rabies vaccines and rabies immune globulin (RIG) is critical for preventing the progression of the virus following potential exposure. However, the current system of healthcare delivery in the United States has witnessed an alarming trend: the unnecessary utilization of emergency department (ED) visits for rabies PEP, including follow-up vaccinations. This paper aims to examine and address this issue through a review of the factors contributing to the inappropriate use of ED services for rabies treatment.
