Contemporary Museum Practices In An "Old School House;" Bringing Best Collections Management And Public History Practices To A Local Historical Society, Korey Ryan Morris

Historic Preservation Final Projects

The Taylor Michigan Historical Society’s (THS) collections and interpretation-based activities in its historical single-room schoolhouse were underutilized and put to the side for years. The current wave of THS members and volunteers are reinvigorating the society by using best practices in the field of museum management and heritage interpretation to achieve its goals of a vibrant community historical society. To assist in this revitalization effort, this project: creates object and archival collection lists for current and future reference in the schoolhouse; updates the interpretation plans for the schoolhouse, including lesson plans that reflect the current academic standards in the state …

Migrant Vulnerability To Human Trafficking: A Decade In Review, Elizabeth A. Solis

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Despite the establishment of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) in 2000, the state and prevalence of human trafficking in the United States has greatly increased. While information and legislation exist, it still remains an under-researched and under-evaluated issue. This study looks through the enacted human trafficking federal legislation over the last decade to track whether migrant vulnerability to human trafficking has been further addressed with the evolution of the issue within the country. To provide a relevant analysis, this study will examine human trafficking legislation through the years of 2013-2023 and will focus on the main research question of …

The Effects Of Alcohol On Crash Avoidance Reaction Time In A Driving Simulator Task In Humans, Aishwarya Vasudevan Jan 2024

The Effects Of Alcohol On Crash Avoidance Reaction Time In A Driving Simulator Task In Humans, Aishwarya Vasudevan

Wayne State University Theses

AIM 1: Alcohol-impaired driving continues to be a significant cause of car crash injuries and deaths. The blood alcohol concentration (BAC) cut-off level for drunk driving is 0.08% in Michigan, and is estimated that lowering this cut-off to 0.05%would save 500–800 lives every year in the US alone. We used a portable virtual reality (VR)-based driving simulator to demonstrate the effects of alcohol at BAC concentrations 0.02-0.08%, grouped into 0.01% increments, on driving performance, specifically Crash Avoidance Reaction Time (CART), i.e., the time (in msec) required to initiate a steering avoidance response. We found that BAC concentrations as low as …

Recovering And Reclaiming Linguistic And Cultural Identities: Revealing Skoo Haints Through The Black Storytelling Tradition, Lisa Marie Westbrooks

Wayne State University Dissertations

This qualitative study uses the first person, “I” to explore the Black Storytelling Tradition as method and methodology. As a Black scholar I centered my grandfather’s empirical knowledge of haints (a metaphor for demoralizing, oppressive, colonizing, and assimilating societal and educational practices upheld by the dominant class) and my empirical teacher knowledge as an American Descendant of Slavery (ADOS) as the site of inquiry. In utilizing the Black Storytelling Tradition, I share interconnected stories, poems, dreams, “memorys”, “rememorys”, stream of consciousness, and sketches that demonstrate how haints shaped the navigation of my heritage language (African American Language, AAL) and my …

Probing Microscopic Properties Of Next Generation Materials Using Coherent Vibrational And Electronic Spectroscopy, S Mudiyanselage Sachithra Tikiri Kumara Wanasinghe

Wayne State University Dissertations

The dissertation research focused on understanding the relationship between the chemical structure of organic molecules and their photophysical properties, particularly examining coherent electronic and vibrational coupling within and between molecules, with implications for next-generation energy technologies. In Chapter 2, we employed both steady-state and transient optical and magnetic spectroscopic techniques to understand the electronic delocalization in both singlet and triplet exciton delocalization in weakly bound porphyrin dimeric molecules. Our results highlight that the delocalization of singlet exciton delocalization does not guarantee the delocalization of triplet excitons between weakly bound porphyrin macromolecules. Our studies demonstrate how one can access the electronic …

Silk Fibroin - Hyaluronic Acid Nanofibers For Peripheral Nerve Regeneration, Madeline Rose Badrak Jan 2024

Silk Fibroin - Hyaluronic Acid Nanofibers For Peripheral Nerve Regeneration, Madeline Rose Badrak

Wayne State University Theses

Peripheral neuropathy is common and is a major source of pain that can lead to debilitating loss of function. Healing often requires medical intervention through autologous nerve grafts. However, autografting is not always successful and can lead to increased debilitation through donor site morbidity. Tissue engineering seeks to improve nerve injury treatment though the use of nerve conduits. Conduits made from functional biomaterials can be implanted into a nerve injury site encouraging and controlling axonal regrowth without causing additional harm to the patient. Both silk fibroin (SF) and hyaluronic acid (HA) have proven successful in the field of neural tissue …

Discretion, Judgement, And The Supreme Court’S Docket: Litigating Presidential Immunity, Barry Sullivan

Loyola University Chicago Law Journal

The following remarks were delivered at Loyola University Chicago School of Law's Annual All-Journals Banquet in April 2024. The Supreme Court had not yet heard oral arguments or rendered a judgment in Trump v. United States, the presidential immunity case stemming from the former president's alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election. In his remarks, Professor Sullivan reflected on the importance for American democracy of the issue presented in the case, namely, the extent to which a former president may be held legally responsible for criminal acts he allegedly committed during his presidency. The remarks did not go to the …

Applying Girls' Studies To Contemporary Theatre And New Play Development, Sophia Menconi Jan 2024

Applying Girls' Studies To Contemporary Theatre And New Play Development, Sophia Menconi

Playwriting (MFA) Theses

Girls’ Studies is a relatively new academic field characterized by its focus on the complexity of girlhood experiences and understanding girl as a unique social identity separate from the notion of future women. In bringing Girls' Studies theory into the work of theatre scholarship and new play development, I present a framework for the interdisciplinary field of Girls' Theatre Studies. Chapter One is an exploration of girlhood presentations in contemporary theatre through a postfeminist lens. Examining the theatrical manifestations of the "female victim-hero” in contemporary presentations of girlhood, I argue that girl audiences are able to feel with and through …
