Embedding Resuscitation Quality Into Tele-Critical Care Practice, Hallie Sparrow, Erika Setliff, Marie Mercier

Nursing

The Virtual Critical Care (VCC) is a Telecritical Care unit in the Southeastern U.S. that provides services to over 200 beds in 15 ICUs. VCC provides essential expertise and support to meet the needs of ICU Patients in units without 24/7 intensivist coverage, including resuscitation events ("Code Blue"). Resuscitation support can include VCC provider management of the code via camera, and/or VCC RN involvement to support ACLS protocols as needed, provide feedback on CPR quality and effectiveness, and remaining on camera to assist with EMR access and post-event debriefing. This NHSR quality improvement project (IRB00115222) aimed to improve resuscitation quality …

Does Relationship-Centered Communication Partner Training Improve Perceived Marital Attachment, Communication, And Psychosocial Well-Being In Couples Impacted By Aphasia?, Sarah Janalee Laws

Theses and Dissertations

This study explored whether Relationship-Centered Communication Partner Training (RC-CPT) improved perceived marital attachment, communication, and psychosocial well-being in couples impacted by aphasia. A quasi-experimental design was implemented to assess the impact of RC-CPT on various marital outcomes. Twelve married couples participated in the study, with each couple including one spouse with post-stroke aphasia. The Brief Accessibility, Responsiveness, and Engagement Scale (BARE) was used as the primary outcome for this study, assessing attachment behaviors within couples. Secondary outcome measures included the Loneliness Scale Questionnaire, the Relationship Questionnaire, the Conflict and Conflict Resolution Questionnaire, and the Kessler Psychological Distress Rating Scale. Pre-testing …

The Impact Of Response Latency On Perceived Level Of Intelligence And Likability Of Autistic Speakers, Brinley Atkinson May 2026

The Impact Of Response Latency On Perceived Level Of Intelligence And Likability Of Autistic Speakers, Brinley Atkinson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine how turn-taking latency and speaker or listener gender affect the perceived intelligence and likability of the speaker across autistic speakers. In addition, the overarching goal of this research is to help speech-language pathologists (SLPs) better provide support and strategies to autistic individuals to improve their social and professional lives. Neurotypical English speakers (20 male and 20 female) were recruited to listen to a series of conversational speech samples collected from a group of eight autistic adults (four male and four female). In each sample, autistic individuals responded to a series of everyday …

Temporomandibular Joint Ganglion Cyst Causing Dynamic External Auditory Canal Obstruction And Position-Dependent Hearing Loss: A Case Report And Literature Review, Ali Akbar, Abdulrahman Meerza, Craig Pearl May 2026

Temporomandibular Joint Ganglion Cyst Causing Dynamic External Auditory Canal Obstruction And Position-Dependent Hearing Loss: A Case Report And Literature Review, Ali Akbar, Abdulrahman Meerza, Craig Pearl

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Purpose: Ganglion cysts of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) are uncommon periarticular lesions and may be diagnostically challenging because symptoms are often nonspecific. When these lesions arise posterior to the joint, they can produce otologic complaints through dynamic narrowing of the external auditory canal (EAC). Herein, we report on a histologically confirmed TMJ ganglion cyst causing position-dependent hearing loss and review the relevant literature.

Case description: A 72-year-old woman presented with a 3-year history of bilateral preauricular pain, left-sided tinnitus, left aural fullness, and near-complete hearing loss in the left ear when the mandible was closed in occlusion. Clinical examination showed …

Visualization And Marker-Less Tracking Of User-Defined Pre-Processed Mri Articulator Data Using Deep Learning, Michael De George May 2026

Visualization And Marker-Less Tracking Of User-Defined Pre-Processed Mri Articulator Data Using Deep Learning, Michael De George

Student Theses

This thesis presents a comprehensive framework for the automated tracking and visualization of articulatory movements based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. A well-known data analysis tool for markerless pose estimation, known as DeepLabCut, is investigated for this purpose. The performance of this tool is enhanced through the design and implementation of a pre-processor. DeepLabCut is a markerless pose estimation toolbox based on deep learning, which overcomes the issue of making manual annotations frame-by-frame. Limitations from manually marking the MRI images are addressed by implementing transfer learning with convolutional neural networks to achieve accurate, user-defined articulator tracking without markers. Current …

Transforming Power: The Adaptation Of Customary Authorities In Aceh's Forest Governance, Ikhwan Rahmatika Latif, Akmal Saputra, Masrizal Masrizal, Nodi Marefanda, Herdin Arie Saputra

Forest and Society

This article examines the transformation of customary authority in forest governance in Aceh, Indonesia, moving beyond the conventional narrative of decline toward a more nuanced view of power as relational and negotiated. Utilizing the frameworks of political ecology and legal pluralism, the research examines how indigenous institutions adapt to evolving governance structures, spanning from the Sultanate era to centralized state authority and into the post-conflict special autonomy framework. This research employs a qualitative approach, combining literature analysis, legal review, and case-based insights from several regions in Aceh to examine the evolving relationship between customary institutions and forest governance. The findings …

How Informality Drives Forest And Land Use Decision-Making In A Legislative Setting, Emban Ibnurusyd Mas'ud May 2026

How Informality Drives Forest And Land Use Decision-Making In A Legislative Setting, Emban Ibnurusyd Mas'ud

Forest and Society

This note from the field traces how informality shapes forest and land-use decision-making within a provincial legislative arena in Indonesia. Drawing on an insider-expert perspective from 2021–2024, I reflect on how personal ties, symbolic recognition, and off-record exchanges quietly rework formal policymaking. The story begins with a seemingly simple greeting, kakanda, and follows how this sense of belonging opens access, shapes the selection of experts, and influences which programs survive. Along the way, it becomes clear that budgets operate as political currency, not simply as planning tools but as instruments through which alliances are negotiated and policy survival is …

In The Wake Of Sound: On Field Recording, Materiality, And Reparative Listening, Ivy Fu May 2026

In The Wake Of Sound: On Field Recording, Materiality, And Reparative Listening, Ivy Fu

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

This thesis develops a practice of field recording, spatial audio composition, and soft-circuit installation grounded in what I call reparative listening: a slow, materially attentive form of attention oriented toward what dominant recording apparatuses suppress, discard, or fail to register. Across five major projects—Fable Upon Ununified Grounds (2023), Cocoon (2024), Tether (2025), Hide & Seek (2026), and Frequency Commons (2026)—I treat sound not as an extractable output but as a relational event shaped by site, body, material, and signal loss. The work draws together Jane Bennett's vibrant materialism, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick's theory of definitional crisis and the open secret, Zhuangzi's …

Disney Princess Films Representation Of Food And Their Effects On Teenage Girls' Eating Norms, Addison Benninghoff May 2026

Disney Princess Films Representation Of Food And Their Effects On Teenage Girls' Eating Norms, Addison Benninghoff

InnovateHER Meeting 2026

Media portrayal obviously have some profound impacts on our society. The problem at hand is that there have been and will continue to be body image and eating habits linked to the media in teenage girls' lives. A mainstream example of this can be seen early on in young girls' lives when they are first exposed to princess films, which have representations of both femininity and the idealized female form. Disney maintains these body ideals whether the heroine is Asian, Scottish, African-American, or Native American.  How are these body ideals broadcast through eating habits? What messages about normative eating might …

Approval Motivations In Sharing Humorous Tiktok's, Mariam Al-Areedy May 2026

Approval Motivations In Sharing Humorous Tiktok's, Mariam Al-Areedy

InnovateHER Meeting 2026

TikTok is a short-form video platform where users create and share content that is often centered around humor, trends, and everyday social experiences. In face-to-face interactions, people typically rely on immediate feedback to navigate conversations, often using approval seeking behaviors to gain positive reactions and rejection-avoidant behaviors to reduce the risk of negative judgement. While these motivations are well-established in in-person settings, less is known about how they function in digital environments like TikTok, where teens privately share humorous content without immediate social cues to guide their interactions. My general hypothesis was that both rejection avoidance and approval-seeking behaviors will …

Health-Seeking Behaviors Of Ethiopian Women In The United States: A Pilot Qualitative Study, Hanna Belay, Felicia Leammuda, Ahmed Ugbad, Beamlak Kebede May 2026

Health-Seeking Behaviors Of Ethiopian Women In The United States: A Pilot Qualitative Study, Hanna Belay, Felicia Leammuda, Ahmed Ugbad, Beamlak Kebede

InnovateHER Meeting 2026

This study explores how Ethiopian immigrant women understand health and navigate healthcare in the United States. Using qualitative interviews with two participants, findings show that health is viewed holistically, with strong reliance on traditional remedies. Participants engage with the U.S. healthcare system selectively, often seeking care only when symptoms become severe. Barriers such as system complexity, fear, and time delays influence healthcare decisions.

Empowering Women: Understanding Neurological Changes In The Aging Brain, Joy Mckenzie May 2026

Empowering Women: Understanding Neurological Changes In The Aging Brain, Joy Mckenzie

InnovateHER Meeting 2026

Women tend to have more neurological changes than men as they age starting in their mid-30s (Mosconi, 2024). While aging is a natural process, the neurological changes can impact a woman’s personal and professional quality of life (Faubion et al., 2023; Gravini, 2023). For years, women’s neurological symptoms have been ignored by being told that their experiences are normal and just a part of life (Haver, 2025). That narrative is starting to shift with the increased awareness of changes specific to women. There are resources to assess cognitive changes such as memory, processing speed, and word finding and strategies to …

The Influence Of Social Media On Body Image, Self-Esteem, And Eating Disorder Risk In Adolescent Females, Nestanet A. Molla May 2026

The Influence Of Social Media On Body Image, Self-Esteem, And Eating Disorder Risk In Adolescent Females, Nestanet A. Molla

InnovateHER Meeting 2026

  • This literature review explored how appearance-focused social media affects adolescent girls. The studies showed that social media is linked to body dissatisfaction, comparison behaviors, lower self-esteem, and unhealthy eating behaviors, especially when use is intensive, problematic, or strongly appearance-focused1–4
  • At the same time, protective factors such as media literacy, family support, and body-positive interventions may help reduce these negative effects4,5

Headset To Reset: Virtual Reality Therapy In Postoperative Heart And Lung Transplant Patients, Michaela Sanchez May 2026

Headset To Reset: Virtual Reality Therapy In Postoperative Heart And Lung Transplant Patients, Michaela Sanchez

Doctoral Projects

Postoperative heart, lung, and heart-lung transplant recipients are at increased risk for anxiety and depression, both of which have been associated with increased risk of complications and higher mortality rates. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to implement a mindfulness-based virtual reality (VR) therapy intervention for postoperative transplant recipients at a Northern California academic medical center and to evaluate its feasibility, tolerability, and acceptability during the index hospitalization. Over a 15-week period, five participants completed a total of eight VR sessions. Participants selected from immersive mindfulness-based environments, including guided meditation and other relaxation experiences. Anxiety and depression were …
