Using The Socio-Ecological Model To Explore Parents' Resilience And Perceptions Of Adverse Childhood Experiences: A Qualitative Study In The Southeastern United States, Maribel G Dominguez, Christine Markham, Andrew E Springer, Louis D Brown

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: The negative impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on child development is documented. The parent-child relationship protects against ACEs and improves healthy child development, playing a crucial role in preventing and mitigating ACEs by strengthening parental resilience. However, there is a gap in the literature on our understanding of parental resilience's impact on the parent-child relationship within the social-ecological model (SEM) (i.e., intra- and interpersonal, community, and societal levels). Objective: This study explores parents' perspectives on parental resilience as a protective factor for preventing and mitigating ACEs at every level of the SEM. Method: This study uses a thematic …

Gender, Customs, And Oil Palm: Reframing Iban Women's Roles In Sarawak's Changing Forest Landscape, Lucy Sebli, Caroline Eve Gembar, Dexter Sigan John, Claudia Jiton, Dick Lembang Dugun

Forest and Society

The expansion of the oil palm industry significantly shapes gender roles within Iban society, revealing a complex interplay between tradition and modernity. Contemporary research underscores the fundamentally egalitarian nature of Iban society, a crucial context for understanding evolving gender relations. While Iban women primarily manage domestic responsibilities, this occurs within a framework promoting equality, where all individuals are valued and afforded equal rights and opportunities. In subsistence farming, men often support heavier tasks, highlighting a collaborative approach to gender roles. However, the increasing complexity and stratification of the gendered division of labour, particularly exacerbated by oil palm cultivation, introduces new …

Robust Two-Stage Mimo-Ofdm Channel Estimation Method Against Sensing Errors, Yi Peng, Jun Wang, Qingqing Yang, Jianming Wang, Hui Li

Journal of System Simulation

To address the challenges of performance degradation, high pilot overhead, and high computational complexity in traditi onal channel estimation methods for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) assisted MIMO-OFDM systems when radar sensing information contains errors, this paper proposes a robust two-stage sparse channel estimation framework designed to be tolerant of sensing errors. In the first stage, a residual energy weighted simultaneous orthogonal matching pursuit (REW-SOMP) algorithm is designed. Leveraging locally adaptive dictionary expansion and a residual- weighted path selection mechanism, it accurately captures communication-associated paths even under sensing errors. The second stage introduces an adaptive penalty factor alternating direction method …

A Journey Into Implicature: Do You Know What I Mean?, Brian Tura May 2026

A Journey Into Implicature: Do You Know What I Mean?, Brian Tura

Master's Projects and Capstones

In everyday communication, English speakers often use implied meaning in a multitude of situations and variety of ways. Research has shown that explicitly teaching meta-pragmatic concepts, such as implicature, can have a positive impact on students’ ability to not only understand implicature but can also help them think about English in a different way, providing insight into native speakers’ use of the language. Even with this evidence, implicature is rarely found in ESOL teaching materials, and when it is found, there is seldom any direct discussion on how to appropriately use implied meaning. The purpose of this project is to …

Perception And Practice: A Multiple Case Study Exploration Of Teacher Beliefs Of Intelligence And Praise Practice Implementation In The Primary School Classroom, Johanna Rose Hall

Doctoral Dissertations

Possession of a fixed or growth mindset of intelligence has been shown to substantially influence student academic behaviors and achievement. Students who view intelligence as fixed are more likely to avoid academic challenges and learning opportunities, whereas students who view their intelligence as malleable are more likely to embrace challenges and persist through difficulty. Given the importance of fostering a growth mindset of intelligence in students, this study examines how primary school teachers’ beliefs about the malleability of intelligence influence the type of praise they use in the classroom. Specifically, this study explores how teachers’ internal and underlying beliefs shape …

Despite these growing concerns, limited studies have been conducted on this specific ethnic community …

Justice By Geography: District-Level Variation In Pretrial Release Outcomes Across Oregon, Ethan Loomis May 2026

Justice By Geography: District-Level Variation In Pretrial Release Outcomes Across Oregon, Ethan Loomis

Dissertations and Theses

AbstractOregon’s pretrial system operates under a common statewide legal framework, yet detention and release outcomes do not appear fully consistent across jurisdictions. Earlier research on pretrial decision-making has largely focused on judicial discretion, individual-level legal factors, and the use of risk assessment tools, while giving less attention to the district-level environments in which those decisions are made. This study examines whether variation in institutional capacity, political context, demographic composition, and socioeconomic conditions corresponds with differences in pretrial outcomes across Oregon’s circuit court districts.

The study draws from focal concerns theory, racial threat perspectives, and organizational approaches to court decision-making. Rather …

A significant proportion of individuals who are heavily exposed to infectious tuberculosis patients do not acquire Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection, as detected by an interferon gamma release assay (IGRA). We examined circulating metabolite profiles and metabolic genotypes in 199 heavily exposed IGRA-negative tuberculosis household contacts in Indonesia. Based on differentially abundant metabolites, activity of several pathways including arachidonic acid, arginine and proline, glutathione, and tryptophan metabolism, correlated with a negative IGRA at three months. SNPs near PRODH (involved in arginine and proline metabolism) were associated with circulating proline concentrations and persistently negative IGRA results, while SNPstudys near AFMID (involved in …

The neuromuscular junction (NMJ) is a well-established model for synapse development, structure, and function. Surrounding the NMJ is a narrow perijunctional zone (PJZ), enriched in muscle-specific voltage-gated sodium channels that prevent synaptic fatigue. Despite this role, the PJZ remains poorly characterized. To determine its molecular composition, we engineered mice to express the biotin ligase TurboID fused to the cell adhesion molecule neurofascin (Nfasc), and that localizes to the PJZ through ankyrin scaffolding proteins. Using proximity proteomics, we identify numerous PJZ-associated proteins, including Perilipin 4 (Plin4), that are highly enriched and clustered at the PJZ. We also perform proximity proteomics on …

Doctoral Dissertations

Jesuit higher education has historically depended on collaboration between Jesuits and non-Jesuit administrators, faculty, and staff to sustain its mission of promoting faith, justice, and the holistic formation of students. In recent decades, demographic shifts within the Society of Jesus and increasing institutional complexity have led to a greater reliance on Lay collaborators in leadership and academic roles. Despite strong ecclesial and Jesuit directives encouraging shared mission and co-responsibility, many Jesuit institutions continue to struggle with translating these ideals into equitable governance and collaborative practices. This challenge is particularly significant in African contexts, where Jesuit universities operate within diverse cultural …

Co-Occurring Clonal Hematopoiesis Exhibits Strong Selection And High Leukemia Risk, Kara M Barnao, Irenaeus C C Chan, Duc Tran, Yin Cao, Kelly L Bolton, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) and mosaic chromosomal alterations (mCAs) are two types of clonal hematopoiesis (CH) associated with hematological parameters and malignancy risk. Here we show, in genomic data from 546,090 biobank participants, that co-occurring CH (≥2 CH mutations detected) is present in 1.6% of cancer-free individuals and shows strong evidence for selection (up to 804x enrichment). Co-occurrence is more frequent in those with a prior cancer (3.6%), suggesting treatment-induced selection. Acquisition of CHIP usually precedes mCAs with co-occurrences manifesting stronger phenotypic disruptions in telomere attrition and hematologic parameters than component CH events. Individuals with co-occurring CH have …
