Indigenous Peoples And Environmental Justice: Recognition, Rights, And Representation Of Indigenous Peoples In Bangladesh's Environmental Regulatory Framework, Nasrin Akter
LLM Theses
Using an Environmental Justice theoretical lens, this thesis explores the extent to which the environmental legislative landscape of Bangladesh has ensured environmental justice for Indigenous peoples. In doing so, the thesis concentrates on three main areas: recognition, rights of Indigenous people under the environmental legal framework as well as their representation in the environmental decision making bodies. The research evaluates Bangladesh environmental laws against standards elaborated in the environmental justice literature on each of these three areas. The research employs a combination of legal and policy analysis, as well as a critical analytical approach as part of its methodology. This …

No. 29: Translocal Households, Rural-Urban Links And Migrant Food Security In South Africa, Jonathan Crush, Godfrey Tawodzera, Maria Salamone
Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network
This paper revisits the issue of rural-urban links in post-apartheid South Africa, challenging the assumption that the end of apartheid would lead to rapid urbanization and the dissolution of circular migration. Despite the abolition of influx controls and the significant increase in the urban population from 33% in 1980 to 55% in 2011 among black South Africans, rural-urban ties and flows have proven resilient. The persistence of circular migration is evident in the continuous flow of people, goods, and remittances between urban and rural areas. This paper draws on a survey of over 800 Eastern Cape migrants in Cape Town, …

What Rich County Leaders And Residents Can Do To Strengthen The Impact Of Girls And Women In Their Area, Amy Anderson, Susan R. Madsen
Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications
This idea sheet is based on a 2024 gathering in Rich County with input from 20 individuals. As Utah’s third smallest county with a wide geographic spread, this included women from across the county. Girls and women face challenges unique to the area in which they live, and the goal of this gathering was to identify those barriers and determine strategies and initiatives that local leaders and residents can implement to address them. This document includes recommendations in the following areas: home and family, education, culture and community engagement, health and wellbeing, and business and economics.

Libraries Professional Work
ETDs in repositories are nothing new, but what do you do when starting from zero, and your institution has not actively collected or archived student ETDs?
This was the scenario at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Being a relatively new institution growing out of several smaller local colleges, the codification of administrative workflows as related to ETDs took the long trail.
This talk will discuss our approach to discovering our own uncollected content, engaging ProQuest as an unexpected partner, and going from zero to fairly complete in about a year.
The Challenge Of Legal Citation Systems, Joshua Levine
The Challenge Of Legal Citation Systems, Joshua Levine
Library Staff Online Writings
Mastering legal citation means understanding multiple citation systems. In addition to the Bluebook, fifty states produce fifty sets of laws, and each state decides how it wants its own materials to be cited. For case law, the Bluebook advises authors to use the West Reporter citations if available, but to add public domain citations if a state uses them. However, a state’s internal rules may require citation to the official state reports. All this creates a maze of rules that practitioners need to follow. Legal citation presents difficulties for law students that law librarians and instructors need to appreciate, so …

Understanding Students` Attitude And Intention Towards Vocational Education And Training (Vet) In The Sultanate Of Oman, Shweta Belwal, Fatma Rashid Al Moqbali, Rakesh Belwal
Plymouth Business School
The current study investigates the influence of attitudes, subjective norms (SN), and perceived behavioural control (PBC) in understanding the intentions of Grade 11 and Grade 12 (N = 376) students in Oman to join vocational education and training (VET) institutions. The study’s objectives were twofold: to assess secondary-school students’ attitudes toward vocational education and to investigate their intentions to join VET. A quantitative approach following the partial least square-based structural equation modelling was used. According to the findings, attitudes, PBC, and SNs, exhibit a significant favourable influence on students’ intention to join VET. However, some partial invariance to the relationship …
Stirred By Your Presence, Jeremy D. Bendik-Keymer
Stirred By Your Presence, Jeremy D. Bendik-Keymer
Faculty Scholarship
Traces of you reach me through my senses. But without wondering in your presence, I cannot see you. For beings of sense and meaning such as ourselves, being stirred by another’s presence opens wondering. The implications of such claims are striking for what perception involves, for being in touch with another, and for good relationships. The paper proceeds as a series of “strobes,” from an ancient Greek word for whirling. Turning quickly about, words enact being stirred into won-dering, interspersed with visual glimpses, a photographic series. Building on recent work by the author, the paper draws on Jean-Luc Marion’s phenomenology; …

Clinical, Diagnostic, And Metabolic Characteristics Associated With Nephrolithiasis In The Black Women's Health Study, Maria D'Amico, Richard K. Babayan, David S. Wang, Shaun Wason, Yvette C. Cozier
Jefferson Hospital Staff Papers and Presentations
Background/Objectives: Nephrolithiasis (kidney stones) is a frequently occurring urologic condition resulting in significant patient morbidity and healthcare costs. Despite the higher prevalence of metabolic risk factors for nephrolithiasis among Black women, there have been few epidemiologic studies of kidney stones focusing on this group.
Methods: We describe demographic and health characteristics, diagnostics, and metabolic profiles of US Black women with self-reported kidney stones. The women were participants in the Black Women’s Health Study (BWHS), a large prospective cohort of US Black women (median age 38 years) begun in 1995.
Results: Among the 2750 BWHS participants who completed an online supplemental …

BACKGROUND: In 2021, the United States experienced a 14% rise in fatal drug overdoses totaling 106,699 deaths, driven by harmful opioid use, particularly among individuals in the perinatal period who face increased risks associated with opioid use disorders (OUDs). Increased concerns about the impacts of escalating harmful opioid use among pregnant and postpartum persons are rising. Most of the current limited perinatal OUD studies were conducted using traditional methods, such as interviews and randomized controlled trials to understand OUD treatment, risk factors, and associated adverse effects. However, little is known about how social media data, such as X, formerly known …

Challenging The Johnson Amendment: What Safe Space Gets Right - And Wrong, Benjamin Leff
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
There has long been a scholarly debate about the so-called Johnson Amendment, which is the statutory provision that prohibits charities from “intervening” in campaigns for public office. Some scholars argue that the Johnson Amendment, or at least the IRS’s interpretation of it, unconstitutionally prevents charities from exercising their fundamental rights to speech or religious liberty. Activists have tried to provoke IRS enforcement of the prohibition so they could argue their interpretation of the Constitution in court, but the IRS appeared to be avoiding litigation on the issue. On March 18, Students and Academics for Free Expression, Speech, and Political Action …

Journal of Geriatric Emergency Medicine
Introduction: Non-pharmacologic prevention measures reduce incident delirium by up to 30-40%% in inpatient and ED settings, but consistent application is often difficult. A mobile health application, titled iPREPARED (Improve Prevention and Recovery by Engaging Patients and FAmily-Caregivers to End Delirium) was co-developed with patients and their care partners to prepare them for delirium and empower them to use non-pharmacological prevention measures. This study assessed the feasibility, acceptability, and usability of iPREPARED in the emergency department (ED).
Methods: An IRB-approved prospective study enrolled a convenience sample of ED patients over age 60 and/or their care partners. Participants were provided a tablet …
