Student Development Of Social Capabilities And Life Skills: A Mixed-Methods Study From Pakistan, Aisha Naz Ansari Oct 2024

Student Development Of Social Capabilities And Life Skills: A Mixed-Methods Study From Pakistan, Aisha Naz Ansari

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

Holistic development of school-going students has gained momentum. Developing countries need to equip students with skills to thrive in the contemporary world, yet research on this topic in Pakistan is limited. This study, therefore, examines students’ non-cognitive skills (i.e., social capabilities and life skills) using a sequential mixed-methods approach. The sample was selected through multi-stage cluster sampling technique. The quantitative sample comprised students (n=263) from eight schools. The qualitative sample of students (n=16), teachers (n=8), and school leaders (n=4) was purposively selected. The results revealed that students are socially capable and possess basic life skills. However, schools do not explicitly …

Journalists Under Attack: Global Perspectives On Threats, Violence And Impunity, Edward L. Carter Oct 2024

Journalists Under Attack: Global Perspectives On Threats, Violence And Impunity, Edward L. Carter

Faculty Publications

Journalists are under attack. The digital and physical intimidation and injuries cause harm to not only journalists themselves but also the societies they serve. Society suffers when journalists are silenced because the valuable information they would have provided is prevented from entering the public consciousness. Attacks on journalists are largely met with indifference or ineffective efforts to achieve justice. This impunity emboldens others. This book originated with an international online symposium in 2022 in which scholars and practitioners from around the globe met to discuss not only the problem but also possible solutions.

Navigating Entry: The Role Of Exposure And Career Fit Negotiation In Women’S Pathways To Policing In The United States, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard, Rachael Rief, Trisha Rhodes, Lexi Goodijohn Oct 2024

Navigating Entry: The Role Of Exposure And Career Fit Negotiation In Women’S Pathways To Policing In The United States, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard, Rachael Rief, Trisha Rhodes, Lexi Goodijohn

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Women’s engagement in policing in the United States and other countries has not reached its potential. We interviewed 47 women in law enforcement to learn about their pathways into policing. Two primary themes emerged: career discovery through exposure and negotiating career fit. Exposure through interactions with role models, hands-on experiences, and media portrayals, provided a peek into policing. The assessment and negotiation of career “fit” in our study was an ongoing, dynamic process. As participants faced questions about their own characteristics, values, and belonging, exposure in the form of role models and experiences helped them navigate career fit concerns. Implications …

Pandemic Perspectives From Detained Youth During Covid-19: Bridging The Knowledge Gap For Future Safeguards., April Mcneill-Johnson, Zuri Hudson, Brittany Moore, Dumebi Okocha, Megha Ramaswamy, Kimberly Randell

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Despite the worsening health disparities among youth in detention during the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been minimal exploration into the pandemic experiences of detained youth and opportunities for pandemic mitigation. This paper analyzes the perspectives of youth in detention on the pandemic, including the effect of the pandemic on their detention experience and their perceptions about COVID-19 vaccination. The study used purposive sampling to recruit 16 participants (aged 14-17 years) from two juvenile detention centers in the urban Midwest. We conducted semi-structured interviews and analyzed verbatim transcripts using a hybrid deductive-inductive approach and thematic analysis. Four themes emerged: 1) personal …

Exploring The Adoption Phenomenon Of Artificial Intelligence By Doctoral Students Within Doctoral Education, Joey Oliveira, Tim Murphy, Ginger Vaughn, Salim Elfahim, Rob E. Carpenter

Human Resource Development Faculty Publications and Presentations

The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in academia is an emerging field of interest. However, there is scant literature that explores the phenomenon of AI adoption by graduate students in doctoral education. This study employs collaborative autoethnography to explore and better understand the nuances of how doctoral students experience AI technologies within academic pursuits. A critical analysis of data revealed that the collective researcher-participant experiences offered the primary overarching theme of adoption strategy, with four distinct subthemes: adoption fear, adoption resistance, adoption feasibility, and adoption ethics. The findings suggest a balanced approach to AI adoption depends on the development of …

How does one begin to talk about the end? Contemporary artistic and literary responses to climate change frequently invoke Romantic traditions, in part because many theorists attribute our current crisis to historical developments in the Romantic period, but also as means of representing how climate change collapses the familiar orderliness of time. This essay is about the narrative forms that emerge when our place of safety is revealed to be as unstable as melting permafrost. It centers on Mary Shelley’s 1825 essay about a frozen Englishman reanimated during that especially warm summer. I read Shelley’s essay anachronistically alongside contemporary climate …

The South China Sea Arbitration After Eight Years: Its Implications For Jurisprudence And Third Parties, Yoshifumi Tanaka Oct 2024

The South China Sea Arbitration After Eight Years: Its Implications For Jurisprudence And Third Parties, Yoshifumi Tanaka

International Law Studies

Even though eight years have passed since the issuance of the South China Sea arbitral award between the Republic of the Philippines and the People’s Republic of China, China has repeatedly claimed that the South China Sea arbitral award is null and void. Thus a question arises with regard to the legal consequences of the award in international law and international relations. The aim of this article is to consider this question by analyzing the impacts of the South China Sea arbitral award from three viewpoints: The impacts on the jurisdiction of an adjudicative body with regard to mixed disputes …

The Antecedents Of The Experience Of Light In Dreams, Gregory Scott Sparrow, Ryan Hurd Oct 2024

The Antecedents Of The Experience Of Light In Dreams, Gregory Scott Sparrow, Ryan Hurd

Counseling Faculty Publications

The experience of inner light and ecstasy is widely accepted as a universal mystical experience, regardless of cultural or religious context. While one can read first-hand accounts in the historical record, the direct experience of light remains elusive for most people. This study analyzes a series of dream-based experiences of light provided by a single subject. In our analysis of 19 dreams, we pursue a process-oriented, relational analysis based on co-creative dream theory, which views the dream as an interactive experience in real time rather than a fixed product of the unconscious mind. By analyzing dreams as relational events, in …

The Reception Of Anglo-American Contractual Standards In Selected Droit Civil Systems: German And Polish Examples., Dr. Pawel Mazur, Dr. Hab. A. Szlęzak Oct 2024

The Reception Of Anglo-American Contractual Standards In Selected Droit Civil Systems: German And Polish Examples., Dr. Pawel Mazur, Dr. Hab. A. Szlęzak

Loyola of Los Angeles International and Comparative Law Review

The reception of Anglo-American contractual standards in droit civil countries is not as straightforward as it would seem at first glance. The language expressing notions such as “breach of contract,” “representations & warranties,” or “indemnities” cannot be merely copied into agreements subject to the law of droit civil countries. They need to be transposed thereto, i.e., rendered in terms of legal institutions characteristic of the legal systems of such countries, to achieve the same functional results as those achievable in the place of origin of such notions.

The authors discuss the process of such transposition in the examples of Germany …

Lawyers And Non-Lawyers In International Arbitration: Discovering Diminishing Diversity, Luke Nottage, Nobumichi Teramura, James Tanna Oct 2024

Lawyers And Non-Lawyers In International Arbitration: Discovering Diminishing Diversity, Luke Nottage, Nobumichi Teramura, James Tanna

Loyola of Los Angeles International and Comparative Law Review

This article highlights a curious lack of diversity within the proliferating discourse about the lack of diversity in international arbitration. There is hardly any awareness or at least sustained discussion about the limited diversity of professional backgrounds, and more specifically, the dominance nowadays of those with practicing lawyer positions or primary careers across the key groups and publication outlets for international arbitration. Yet this encroachment of lawyers was still being contested in the 1990s, as being linked to burgeoning costs and delays, and such “formalisation” has been re-emerging in recent years. Diversifying the world of international arbitration to involve more …

Win Your Race Goal: A Generalized Approach To Prediction Of Running Performance., Sandhyarani Dash Oct 2024

Win Your Race Goal: A Generalized Approach To Prediction Of Running Performance., Sandhyarani Dash

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

We introduce a novel approach for predicting running performance, designed to apply across a wide range of race distances (from marathons to ultras), elevation gains, and runner types (front-pack to back of the pack). To achieve this, the entire running logs of 15 runners, encompassing a total of 15,686 runs, were analyzed using two approaches: (1) regression and (2) time series regression (TSR). First, the prediction accuracy of a long short-term memory (LSTM) network was compared using both approaches. The regression approach demonstrated superior performance, achieving an accuracy of 89.13% in contrast, the TSR approach reached an accuracy of 85.21%. …

Effective Corporate Social Responsibility And Environmental, Social, And Governance Incorporation Strategies, Dorathy Okeke-Okiche

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Failure to develop and implement effective strategies for integrating corporate social responsibility (CSR) and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives to manage economic risks can lead to reputational damage and hinder the ability to attract investors, customers, and talent. Organizational leaders of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) need to adopt effective strategies to incorporate CSR and ESG initiatives to mitigate economic risks. Grounded in stakeholder theory and triple bottom line framework, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry study was to explore the effective strategies employed by business leaders of SMEs to incorporate CSR and ESG initiatives for managing economic …

Strategies Healthcare Leaders Use To Improve Patient Experience To Enhance Hospital Performance, Cenethea Lofbom

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Healthcare leaders in the United States are confronted with challenges related to patient experience and overall hospital performance. Concerns about poor patient experiences are linked to suboptimal clinical outcomes and diminished business performance within the healthcare environment. Grounded in the appreciative inquiry theory, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry was to explore the effective strategies that healthcare leaders in U.S. hospitals providing acute inpatient care used to improve patient experience and enhance hospital performance. The participants were five healthcare leaders from the Midwest, Southeast, Southwest, and Western regions of the United States, each with a record of successfully implementing …

An Innovative Approach: Introducing Novel Sheep Paternity Testing Panels, Onur Yilmaz, İbrahi̇m Cemal, Nezi̇h Ata, Orhan Karaca

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this research was to create various microsatellite paternity test panels that are efficient, cost-effective, simple, and accessible for paternity assessments within the Eşme sheep breed in Western Anatolia. The study included 2432 animals from sixteen farms, consisting of 147 rams and 2285 lambs. 17 microsatellite markers were utilized in the study to develop these test panels, prioritizing markers with high polymorphic information content (PIC) and probability of exclusion (PE) values. By combining markers with varying PIC and PE values, 16 distinct paternity test panels were established. The study revealed mean values for various parameters of the microsatellites …

Brief Of 20 Professors Of Law And Public Knowledge As Amici Curiae In Support Of Affirmance, Charles Duan, Rachel Bamberger

Amicus Briefs & Court Filings

In Carroll Shelby Licensing v. Halicki, the U.S. Court of Appeals considers whether a car in a film is a "character" for purposes of copyright law. Character copyright protection has proven to be an especially difficult area of the law, and courts and commentators have struggled with the proper boundaries of such protection and whether characters are independently protectable works at all. This brief presents a novel legal argument for resolving the scope of character copyright, at least in the context of inanimate objects in creative works such as cars. While the case law and commentary has to date focused …
