Facial Recognition Technology And The Dire Need To Regulate It, Michael Mellon Nov 2024

Facial Recognition Technology And The Dire Need To Regulate It, Michael Mellon

SMU Law Review Forum

Facial recognition technology enables the identification of subjects in digital recordings through the use of biometrics. This technology is increasingly used by both state and private actors for crime prevention, criminal investigations, crowd monitoring, and more. Its use continues despite the fact that the technology itself has been shown to have a propensity for bias and misidentification. The flaws inherent in the technology are not the only cause for concern either. There is reason to believe that nefarious actors could intentionally use facial recognition technology to achieve illegitimate ends. Meanwhile, facial recognition technology remains unregulated at the federal level in …

Navigating Non-Orthogonality: Exploring Latent Mean Differences In Unbalanced Conditions, Jay B. Jeffries Nov 2024

Navigating Non-Orthogonality: Exploring Latent Mean Differences In Unbalanced Conditions, Jay B. Jeffries

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Researchers understand that conducting numerous pairwise comparisons between group means increases the Type I error rate, prompting the use of planned contrasts like orthogonal contrast sets. Implicit to orthogonal contrast sets is the principal assumption that groups are balanced in size. Further, when dealing with complex variables like latent constructs, specialized modeling is necessary. Understanding how violations of the assumptions of an orthogonal contrast set and the latent variable model approach can help identify variation in the accuracy of group mean difference. However, hindrances to the accuracy of latent mean orthogonal comparisons when this assumption is untenable remains unsettled. This …

Let’S Get Digital: Retrospective Digitization Of Etds For An Institutional Repository, Marc Jaffy

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Franklin University Library conducted a retrospective digitization project to make a collection of education master’s theses available in its institutional repository. Digitizing bound theses and dissertations to make them available in an institutional repository benefits the institutional repository, the university, the student authors of the works, and external researchers. When conducting a retrospective digitization project for theses or dissertations that are protected by copyright, a university library must consider how the students’ copyright in their work affects the library’s ability to digitize the theses or dissertations and make them available in an institutional repository. University libraries should also consider making …

Baghdad Science Journal

Corrosion is the term for the surface disintegration of metals and alloys in a specific environment. Corrosion processes change a metal alloy's chemical properties as well as its mechanical behaviors. To stop rusting, a novel strategy based on an original material has been applied. By electrochemically synthesizing polyEugenol(PE)/nanocomposite (Grapgene,Fe3O4) on stainless steel 316L (SS316L), which serves as the working electrode, using the electropolymerization approach, conducting polymer-composites are material types that show promise for anticorrosion. The atomic force microscopy images (AFM) and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy analyses were used to evaluate the produced coated polymer. The results showed that, in comparison to …

Eeg Eye Blink Artifacts Removal With Wavelet Denoising And Bandpass Filtering, Ebtesam N. Alshemmary, Bushra K. Hilal, Azmi Sh. Abdulbaqi, Mohammed A. Ahmed, Zhentai Lu

Baghdad Science Journal

Many data sources can be analyzed using Wavelet Transforms (WT), a mathematical technique frequently used for extracting information from them. Although WT was effective at Blind Source Separation (BSS), it had some limitations, such as signal loss. The problem has been addressed with the introduction of a joint algorithm that combines WT with Frequency Domain Filtering (BPF). Wavelet Denoising Technique (WDT) and Band-Pass Filtering (BPF) are employed in this research to propose an innovative algorithm for combining advanced wavelet transform methods. Combining these two techniques helps reduce eye flutter in electroencephalograms (EEGs).FP1 signals produced by eye movement are filtered out …

Individuals with a family history of alcohol or other substance use disorders (FH+) are at increased risk for developing alcohol and other substance use disorders (AUD/SUD) compared to individuals with no such family histories (FH-). FH+ young adults have blunted stress reactivity, lower cognitive performance and altered frontal white matter microstructure compared to FH- controls. We hypothesized that family history of AUD/SUD disrupts neuroendocrine regulation of the immune system in FH+ individuals, resulting in altered blood immune cell composition, inflammation and neurocognitive alterations that, ultimately, increases risk for AUD/SUD and associated psychopathology. We examined white blood cell (WBC) parameters derived …

A Putative Camp-Binding Protein In Trypanosoma Brucei Cooperates With Flam3 To Promote Flagellar Connection And Cell Morphogenesis, Qing Zhou, Phu Van Nguyen, Ziyin Li

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Trypanosoma brucei is a flagellated parasitic protozoan, and within the insect vector the parasite transitions from the trypomastigote form to the epimastigote form by repositioning its mitochondrial genome and relocating the flagellum. The mechanisms underlying such morphology changes are still poorly understood, but several flagellum-localized proteins are involved in this process by modulating the flagellum attachment zone (FAZ) that adheres the flagellum to the cell membrane. We report here a putative cAMP-binding protein named cAMP-BP1, which promotes flagellar connection and morphology transition. cAMP-BP1 contains two cyclic nucleotide-binding domains and five calcium-binding C2 domains and localizes to the flagella connector and …

Media Use, Interpersonal Communication, And Personal Relevance As External And Internal Representations Of Climate Change, Sonny Rosenthal, Pengya Ai Nov 2024

Media Use, Interpersonal Communication, And Personal Relevance As External And Internal Representations Of Climate Change, Sonny Rosenthal, Pengya Ai

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Personal relevance is a key driver of individual climate action. It is also related to media use and interpersonal communication, which the current study examines from two perspectives. First, individuals may find climate change personally relevant because they experience it vicariously through the media and other information sources. Second, they may engage with climate change information because the issue is personally relevant. This study tested these models using structural equation modeling of online survey data from representative samples in Singapore (n = 1,997) and the United States (n = 2,009). Findings supported both models, albeit the first one more strongly. …
