The Geochemistry Of Manganese, Iron And Phosphorus In An Arctic Lake, Jeffrey Clayton Cornwell Apr 1983

The Geochemistry Of Manganese, Iron And Phosphorus In An Arctic Lake, Jeffrey Clayton Cornwell

Marine Biology

Sediment redox processes were investigated in an oligotrophic, arctic lake containing metal oxide crusts in oxidizing surficial sediments (up to 22% Mn and 26% Fe). Toolik Lake, Alaska, a 12,000 year old kettle lake, has the lowest Pb-210 derived sedimentation rates reported for any lake (27 g m('-2) yr('-1)). Three independent methods for estimation of Mn, Fe and P retention within the lake (stream budgets, sediment traps and sediment burial rates) provide similar rates. Of the amounts entering the lake, 28% of P, 50% of Mn and 55% of Fe are retained. Common water column removal mechanisms for these elements …

Reconnaissance Of Sediment-Phosphorus Relationships In Some Utah Reservoirs, Jay J. Messer, Jean M. Ihnat Jan 1983

Reconnaissance Of Sediment-Phosphorus Relationships In Some Utah Reservoirs, Jay J. Messer, Jean M. Ihnat

Reports

Introduction: Phosphorus inputs to lakes and reservoirs from tributary streams and non-point sources are well-known contributors to nuisance algal growths that degrade water quality for potable and recreational uses in lakes and reservoirs. However, phosphours inputs to the euphotic zone may also occur from within the lake itself, as a result of releases from both oxic and anoxid sediments. Such releases may originate from phosphorus inputs to a lake or reservoir during high runoff periods in the previous winder or spring, or they may represent phosphorus trapped in the sediment many years earlier, when phosphorus contributions from natural or anthropogenic …

Effects Of Multiple Scattering And Surface Albedo On The Photochemistry Of The Troposphere, Tommy Reinhold Robert Augustsson Apr 1981

Effects Of Multiple Scattering And Surface Albedo On The Photochemistry Of The Troposphere, Tommy Reinhold Robert Augustsson

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A one-dimensional photochemical model of the troposphere containing the species of the nitrogen, oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, and sulfur families has been developed and used to investigate the vertical profiles and the natural (including atmospheric chemical reactions) and anthropogenic sources and sinks of these species. The species continuity equations are solved numerically applying prescribed boundary conditions. The vertical flux is simulated by use of the parameterized eddy diffusion coefficients. Heterogeneous losses (e.g. rainout, gas-to-particle chemistry, and dry deposition), are parameterized to make calculated profiles consistent with measurements. The photochemical model is coupled to a radiative transfer model that calculates the radiation …

Simulation Of A Storm Event In Marine Microcosms, Candance A. Oviatt, Carlton D. Hunt, Gabriel A. Vargo, Kevin W. Kopchynski Jan 1981

Simulation Of A Storm Event In Marine Microcosms, Candance A. Oviatt, Carlton D. Hunt, Gabriel A. Vargo, Kevin W. Kopchynski

Journal of Marine Research

A storm of moderate intensity and lasting for 14 hours was simulated in three of the Marine Ecosystems Research Laboratory (MERL) microcosms by increasing the intensity of microcosm mixing. The simulation resuspended ~0.3 cm of sediment and increased suspended particulate loads by 2 orders of magnitude. Concurrently, the concentrations of metals and nutrients increased in the water column....

Models Of The Distribution Of 210pb In A Section Across The North Equatorial Atlantic Ocean, Derek W. Spencer, Michael P. Bacon, Peter G. Brewer Jan 1981

Models Of The Distribution Of 210pb In A Section Across The North Equatorial Atlantic Ocean, Derek W. Spencer, Michael P. Bacon, Peter G. Brewer

Journal of Marine Research

The deficiency of 210Pb relative to 226Ra in the world's deep ocean is well documented, and the overall residence time of 210Pb bas been calculated to be about 15-100 years. It has been assumed, generally, that the removal mechanism is one of in situ adsorption on settling particles, but Bacon et al. (1976) suggested that a boundary scavenging process with diffusive and advective fluxes of 210Pb from the interior ocean may be a significant factor....

In Situ Measurements Of Sea-Surface Film Potentials, P. M. Williams, E. S. Van Vleet, C. R. Booth Jan 1980

In Situ Measurements Of Sea-Surface Film Potentials, P. M. Williams, E. S. Van Vleet, C. R. Booth

Journal of Marine Research

A sensitive electrode system has been built for measuring in situ sea-surface potenti als from a mobile platform. The initial results of this study point out the patchy nature of the surface films in some "slick" areas as well as in non-"slick" regions, and illustrate the potential usefulness of this technique in measuring film formation and alteration rates.
