Understanding College Students’ Exam Process In A General Chemistry Course, Angela Willson Jun 2016

Understanding College Students’ Exam Process In A General Chemistry Course, Angela Willson

Masters Theses

The main way most college chemistry courses assess what a student has learned is through a summative exam. After introductory science courses, such as general chemistry, many students cite poor teaching and disappointing grades in these courses as a reason for dropping out of STEM programs. There has been a lack of qualitative research on students’ experiences of the complete process of taking an exam from start to finish, or the exam process, which includes preparing for an exam, taking an exam, receiving feedback, and responding to feedback after the exam has been graded.

My goal in this exploratory study …

Computational Studies Of Spin Trapping Of Biologically Relevant Radicals By New Heteroaryl Nitrones, Eyram Asempa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Heteroaryl nitrone spin traps have been suggested to act as free radical scavengers. The geometry optimizations and the single-point energies of the spin trapping reactions of the heteroaryl nitrones, 5,5-dimethylpyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) and α-phenyl-N-t-butylnitrone (PBN) have been computationally studied using ab initio (Hartree-Fock (HF) and second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2)) methods and Density Functional Theory (DFT) methods. The effects of new heteroaryl substituents on a parent nitrone spin trap have been examined at the HF and MP2 levels with the 6-31G*, and cc-pVnZ (n=D, T, Q) basis sets. The thermodynamics of the spin trapping at the C-site and O-site with •H, …

Stream Energy Impacting Sediment Transport Through Low-Gradient Agricultural Streams, Paula Jane Pryor Mar 2016

Stream Energy Impacting Sediment Transport Through Low-Gradient Agricultural Streams, Paula Jane Pryor

Theses and Dissertations

Water quality can be severely impacted by increased sediment transport, particularly agriculturally-dominated systems like those found in central Illinois. Many low-gradient sediment studies focus on the fine material transported in suspension. However, coarse-material transport can be equally important for understanding sediment loads to surficial reservoirs for local drinking water. To address a general gap in knowledge of coarse-sediment transport through agricultural streams, seasonal changes and watershed differences in sediment transport were examined in a low-gradient system. This was accomplished through the installation of bedload traps, scour-fill markers, and bank erosion pins at two streams, Six Mile Creek and Money Creek …

Surface Chemistry And Transport Properties Of Ii-Vi Semiconductor Nanowires, Pravin Paudel Jan 2016

Surface Chemistry And Transport Properties Of Ii-Vi Semiconductor Nanowires, Pravin Paudel

Theses and Dissertations

Semiconductor nanowires have been widely studied due to their unique properties such as width comparable to critical length-scales, high aspect ratio, and high carrier mobility. These unique properties make them a suitable candidate for various optical and electronic devices like photovoltaics, photodetectors, and field effect transistors. The nanowire surface plays an important role in the performance of these devices because of their high surface to volume ratio. The larger surface area of nanowires may provide better charge separation than planar heterostructures in photovoltaics by providing shorter distance to move for carrier before separation, however, presence of surface states may lead …

Hilchey, Ollivier Hyrien, W. Richard Burack, Sally A. Quataert, Christina M. Baker, Mitra Azadniv, Stephen L. Welle, Stephen M. Ansell, Minsoo Kim, Steven H. Bernstein

Biology

We have previously shown that regulatory T cells (Tregs) infiltrating follicular lymphoma lymph nodes are quantitatively and qualitatively different than those infiltrating normal and reactive nodes. To gain insight into how such Treg populations differ, we performed RNA sequence (RNAseq) analyses on flow sorted Tregs from all three sources. We identify several molecules that could contribute to the observed increased suppressive capacity of follicular lymphoma nodal tregs, including upregulation of CTLA-4, IL-10, and GITR, all confirmed by protein expression. In addition, we identify, and confirm functionally, a novel mechanism by which Tregs target to and accumulate within a human tumor …

Non-Conventional Approaches To Syntheses Of Ferromagnetic Nanomaterials, Dustin M. Clifford

Theses and Dissertations

The work of this dissertation is centered on two non-conventional synthetic approaches to ferromagnetic nanomaterials: high-throughput experimentation (HTE) (polyol process) and continuous flow (CF) synthesis (aqueous reduction and the polyol process). HTE was performed to investigate phase control between FexCo1-x and Co3-xFexOy. Exploration of synthesis limitations based on magnetic properties was achieved by reproducing Ms=210 emu/g. Morphological control of FexCo1-x alloy was achieved by formation of linear chains using an Hext. The final study of the FexCo1-x chains used DoE to …

Strange Compositions: Chemistry And Its Occult History In Victorian Speculative Fiction, Susan Hroncek Jan 2016

Strange Compositions: Chemistry And Its Occult History In Victorian Speculative Fiction, Susan Hroncek

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This dissertation examines how depictions of chemistry in Victorian literature are influenced by concerns regarding the history of chemistry and its relationship to the occult. Among these depictions, I consider non-fiction writings of the period, such as histories of science and articles from periodicals, but I focus on novels that prominently feature chemistry, including Edward Bulwer-Lytton’s A Strange Story (1862), Robert Louis Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886), George Griffith’s Olga Romanoff (1894), T. Mullet Ellis’s Zalma (1895), and Richard Marsh’s The Beetle (1897). These texts link chemistry with its origins in alchemy, the occult, and …

Collaboration And Critical Thinking In An Online Chemistry Environment, Elizabeth Irene Kershisnik

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to examine collaboration and student's critical thinking and cognitive achievement within online chemistry courses. This quantitative study focused on the apparent lack of research relating collaboration and critical thinking in online science courses. Collaboration was determined using the small group collaboration model coding scheme, which examined student postings in asynchronous discussion forums for quantity, equality, and shareness. Critical thinking was measured using the chemistry concept reasoning test, the online self-diagnostic test, and also asynchronous student homework discussion postings that were coded using the community of inquiry cognitive presence indicators. Finally cognitive achievement was determined …

Synthesis And Utility Of Bis-Urea Macrocycles As Nanoreactors And As Ligands For Metal Organic Materials, Sahan R. Salpage Jan 2016

Synthesis And Utility Of Bis-Urea Macrocycles As Nanoreactors And As Ligands For Metal Organic Materials, Sahan R. Salpage

Theses and Dissertations

“Supramolecular chemistry” powered by non-covalent interactive forces forms the crux in the area of host-guest chemistry. Supramolecular assemblies often have different chemical and physical properties than that of its individual molecular entities and are used to develop novel functional materials. Our expertise involves making functional materials from macrocycles, which contain two urea groups and two rigid C shaped spacer groups. These individual macrocyclic components can self-assemble through hydrogen bonding and other non-covalent interactions to form porous supramolecular assemblies that can be used as confined reaction environments and as ligands to synthesize novel metal organic materials.

This dissertation focuses on studying …

Predicting Academic Success Of Health Science Students For First Year Anatomy And Physiology, R Anderton, P Chivers Jan 2016

Predicting Academic Success Of Health Science Students For First Year Anatomy And Physiology, R Anderton, P Chivers

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Students commencing tertiary education enter through a number of traditional and alternative academic pathways. As a result, tertiary institutions encounter a broad range of students, varying in demographic, previous education, characteristics and academic achievement. In recent years, the relatively constant increase in tertiary applications in Australia has not translated to an increase in student retention or graduate numbers. The Health Sciences discipline typically falls within this paradigm, prompting various approaches to promote academic success and overall student retention. In this study, the demographic and previous education of health science students at an Australian University, were analysed along with first year …

A Fluid Inclusion Study Of Acidity In Bedded Halite Of The Larne Halite Member, Triassic Mercia Mudstone Group From The Carnduff 2 Core, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, Lynnette Ann Eichenlaub

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Carnduff 2 core, drilled in 2014 by the Gaelectric Storage Limited Energy Company in County Antrim, Northern Ireland contains Triassic red mudstones and evaporites of the Mercia Mudstone Group. These rocks have been poorly studied in Northern Ireland. However, recent work suggests that they were deposited in an ancient perennial saline lake system. This thesis describes a 591.6 meter core with 92.7% recovery. Fluid inclusion petrography, microthermometry, and laser Raman spectroscopy were conducted on 12 halite beds of the Larne Halite Member to characterize Triassic lake waters.;Chevron and cumulate halite crystals contain abundant unaltered primary fluid inclusions. Most primary …

Developing High Performance And Stable Hetero-Structured Cathodes And Fundamental Understanding Of Oxygen Reduction And Reaction Behavior, Xinxin Zhang Jan 2016

Developing High Performance And Stable Hetero-Structured Cathodes And Fundamental Understanding Of Oxygen Reduction And Reaction Behavior, Xinxin Zhang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

New hetero-structured La2NiO4+delta (LNO)/ (La0.6Sr0.4)0.95Co0.2Fe0.8O3-delta (LSCF) SOFC cathodes have been successfully fabricated by the infiltration technique for long-term stability and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetic consideration. The current comparative study of LSCF and LNO-infiltrated LSCF shows a significant reduction in polarization resistance by one order of magnitude and a 67% increase in maximum power density by using LNO-infiltrated LSCF cathodes at 750°C in air. The electronic conductivity relaxation (ECR) results demonstrate that the remarkable improved oxygen exchange properties of LNO/LSCF hetero-structured cathodes are attributed to not only the increase of surface reaction area, but also the introduction of LNO surface …

Time-Lapse Polymerizations Triggered By Ph Clock Reactions, Elizabeth Jee Jan 2016

Time-Lapse Polymerizations Triggered By Ph Clock Reactions, Elizabeth Jee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The theme of this work is time-lapse polymerizations triggered by pH clock reactions. The first chapter is the introduction and gives a long overview of the different chemistries studied here. The second chapter focuses on the bromate-sulfite clock reaction. Based on some simplified and accepted reaction equations for the bromate-sulfite clock. We presumed it may be possible to increase the pH of the solution via ammonia addition and hinder or significantly reduce the reactivity of the clock reagents, thus creating a storage stable reaction. Adding a polymer system that would not crosslink until the solution became acidic would have created …

Biodegradable Hybrid Nanogels For Combination Chemotherapy, Swapnil Desale Dec 2015

Biodegradable Hybrid Nanogels For Combination Chemotherapy, Swapnil Desale

Theses & Dissertations

Combination chemotherapy is commonly used to treat cancer, because such a therapy regimens usually involve sequential administration of multiple drugs and allow targeting different cell signaling pathway. The co-delivery of drug combination at a controlled ratio via the same vehicle is offering the advantages such as spatial-temporal synchronization of drug exposure, synergistic therapeutic effects and suppression of drug resistance. Undoubtedly, there are several molecular and pharmacological factors that determine the effectiveness of drug combinations. A rationally designed drug combination is required since certain drug ratios and the definitive exposure to the targets of interest can only be synergistic while others …

Characterization And Target Identification Of Non-Toxic Ikkβ Inhibitors For Anticancer Therapy, Elizabeth Blowers Aug 2015

Characterization And Target Identification Of Non-Toxic Ikkβ Inhibitors For Anticancer Therapy, Elizabeth Blowers

Theses & Dissertations

IKKβ is a key kinase in the canonical NF-κB pathway. Transient activation of IKKβ is required for normal immune response while sustained activation has been implicated in cancer. To date, no IKKβ inhibitor has been approved for clinical use as a chemotherapeutic, likely due to unexpected toxicities associated with blocking the transient activation of IKKβ. We hypothesized that an IKKβ inhibitor that allows transient activation of IKKβ, but not sustained activation of IKKβ, could inhibit cancer growth without inducing toxicity.

As such, we identified a small molecule inhibitor, 13-197, that allows the transient activation of IKKβ but not the sustained …

Polygon Distances With Applications To High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Vito Capuano Aug 2015

Polygon Distances With Applications To High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Vito Capuano

All Theses

Analytical chemistry uses high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to separate desired macromolecules from a fluid. This thesis is concerned with monolithic column environments used in HPLC separations. The monolithic column environment under consideration consists of many long polymer fibers suspended in a tube. Between the fibers are voids (interstices) which regulate the separation process. The goal of this thesis is both to identify interstices of a size such that the interstice contributes to the separation process, and to identify the boundaries of the fibers along such interstices. We model the cross section of the column environment with a collection of …
