Vcu Voice (1991-06-14)

VCU Voice, 1988-1998

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Mystical Experiences And The Search For Human Spiritual Connection, Philip Novak Jul 1990

Mystical Experiences And The Search For Human Spiritual Connection, Philip Novak

Collected Faculty Scholarship

"...Mystical experiences can come and go, it seems, without altering the fundamental habit patterns and tendencies that vector our behavior. It is precisely this that separates mystical experience from the wider, deeper process of enlightenment. Enlightenment necessarily involves a lasting transformation of character (character is my shorthand for deep structural determinants of consciousness), while mystical experience does not. Enlightenment is an irreducibly moral notion and is, existentially speaking, inversely proportional to stinkerism. At least this is so for Buddhism, the tradition to which we owe, more than to any other, the very notion of enlightenment, and the tradition on …

Buddhist Meditation And The Great Chain Of Being: Some Misgivings, Philip Novak Jan 1989

Buddhist Meditation And The Great Chain Of Being: Some Misgivings, Philip Novak

Collected Faculty Scholarship

"In his Buddhist Meditation, Edward Conze puts it plainly: 'Meditational practices constitute the very core of the Buddhist approach to life.'1 To presume that the wisdom gained from mental culture is equally available to intellectual analysis, even of the highly refined and subtle, sort, is to presume that a job requiring a laser can be done equally will with a blowtorch. The Buddha's deepest insights are available to the intellect, and powerfully so, but it is only when those insights are discovered and absorbed, by a psyche made especially keen and receptive by long coursing in meditative …

The Kings As Gods: Textiles In The Thai State, H. Leedom Lefferts Jr, Jan 1988

The Kings As Gods: Textiles In The Thai State, H. Leedom Lefferts Jr,

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

If one observes the principles of Theravada Buddhist art, Thai textiles appear to pose a paradox. On the one hand, Buddhist art is defined as progressing hierarchically from representational to aniconic motifs, replicating movement from worlds of lesser merit to worlds of greater merit. On the other hand, we have the gloriously figurative and expensive garments worn by Thai royalty and adorning gods as depicted in temple murals. How is this seeming discrepancy to be explained?

A recent translation of a section of a larger work by the noted French scholar on Southeast Asia and Buddhism, Paul Mus, titled "The …

Special Report, William Wong Dec 1985

Special Report, William Wong

Journal of East Asian Libraries

As an awardee of the Indo-American Fellowship which is administered by the Fulbright Committee, I conducted a ten-week field research project in India in the winter of 1985. I visited more than thirty libraries and museums located in a dozen major cities throughout the subcontinent. While the primary objective of my project was to survey Chinese studies programs and library collections in Indian universities, I also had an opportunity to meet with educators as well as administrators and to discuss current issues and problems in the library and information science professions.

The Voice: 1981-1990

Anthropologist Sherry B. Ortner and author Richard G. Barnet will speak in the Limits and Constraints symposium. Dr. Robert Smith will discuss Wooster's excavations at Pella in Jordan. Letters to the editor contest the claims that the fine arts on campus are supported to the detriment of the communication department and the lack of specific action by the Board of Trustees to prevent College investments from supporting the South African government in Apartheid.

Buddhism And Christianity By George Siegmund, Philip Novak Jan 1982

Buddhism And Christianity By George Siegmund, Philip Novak

Collected Faculty Scholarship

"Influenced by the sympathetic explorations of Thomas Merton, William Johnston and Hugo Enomiya-LaSalle (to name but a few) Christians have over the last decade or so shown an increasing willingness to learn from the Buddhist tradition. An environment in which interest is accompanied by a deep bow of respect is precious and worthy of preservation, and it is for this reason that Buddhism and Christianity deserves attention. It threatens that environment." ~from the review
