A One-Egg Wonder: Working To Cure Judicial Gender Bias And Increase Access To Pre-Embryos For Infertile Parties, Nicole Marks Kaufman
A One-Egg Wonder: Working To Cure Judicial Gender Bias And Increase Access To Pre-Embryos For Infertile Parties, Nicole Marks Kaufman
Cardozo Law Review
The first live birth of a child conceived from in vitro fertilization (“IVF”) happened in 1978. Today, over eight million children have been born through IVF procedures. The first dispute over the resulting pre-embryos was in 1990 when the Tennessee Supreme Court outlined a balancing approach with a presumption favoring non-use of the pre-embryos for courts to follow when resolving these matters. Numerous states have taken differing approaches—some have taken a contractual approach, others an approach requiring contemporaneous mutual consent before there can be a departure from the status quo, and very few state legislatures have directly addressed how to …
Integrated Transcriptomics And Proteomics Study Of Starvation Selected Drosophila Melanogaster, Aavash Adhikari
Integrated Transcriptomics And Proteomics Study Of Starvation Selected Drosophila Melanogaster, Aavash Adhikari
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Drosophila melanogaster, selected for starvation resistance exhibits phenotypic traits such as increased body size, slower development, reduced fecundity and obesity like characteristics including higher lipid reserves and cardiac dysfunction. While prior studies have explored the metabolic and biochemical changes in these flies, the underlying genetic and molecular mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the gene expression and protein abundance in starvation-selected Drosophila through RNAseq, proteomics, and integrating both datasets using the MixOmics package in R. I found differential gene expression in the fat body at the third instar larval stage, particularly in pathways related to lipid metabolism, calcium …
Scavenging As An Accelerant In The Postmortem Interval Estimate: Refining Quantitative Regressions For Decomposition Analyses In Southeast Nebraska, Jenna L. Alexander
Scavenging As An Accelerant In The Postmortem Interval Estimate: Refining Quantitative Regressions For Decomposition Analyses In Southeast Nebraska, Jenna L. Alexander
Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research
In forensic anthropology, the postmortem interval (PMI) is an estimation of the time elapsed from the moment of death to the point of discovery or examination. Contemporary approaches for estimating PMI have sought to refine broad quantitative regressions by addressing variance among intrinsic and extrinsic influences of decomposition at a regional level. Southeast Nebraska and the broader Great Plains region encompass one of the most influential agricultural ecosystems, featuring a unique climate type and a diverse spectrum of vertebrate scavengers. While there has been minimal research addressing how the biogeoclimatic conditions of Nebraska affect predicted estimates for PMI using known …

Modulation Of Energetic And Lipid Pathways By Curcumin As A Potential Chemopreventive Strategy In Human Prostate Cancer Cells, Michele Pellegrino, Maria Antonietta Occhiuzzi, Fedora Grande, Ilaria Stefania Pagani, Stefano Aquaro, Paola Tucci
Staff and Researcher Publications
In Western industrialized countries, prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common malignant disease and prevalent cause of death for men. Epidemiological studies have shown that curcumin (CUR) either prevents PCa initiation or delays its progression to a more aggressive and treatment-refractory form, thus reducing related mortality. Our previous studies have proven the anticancer, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties of CUR on PCa cells. However, there are few reports of the effect of CUR on energy and lipid pathways in PCa. Herein, we show that CUR can modulate the two metabolic energy pathways, increasing glycolytic reserve and reducing oxidative phosphorylation. Moreover, …
Dysfunction Of Polyamine Metabolism In Down Syndrome Related To Cellular Senescence And Β-Amyloid Production, Andres D. Sola
Dysfunction Of Polyamine Metabolism In Down Syndrome Related To Cellular Senescence And Β-Amyloid Production, Andres D. Sola
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Polyamines (PA) are ubiquitous in cells and highly involved in several important cellular functions and thus the dysregulation of their biosynthetic pathway is potentially associated with the progression of age-related diseases like Alzheimer’s’ disease (AD). Though there is research describing how PA content changes in organisms as they age or in those experiencing rapid aging from increased rates of senescence, as in Down syndrome (DS), it is not clear how this connection occurs and whether modulating this pathway may reveal downstream effects on related disease progression. This study examines how the modulation of the PA biosynthetic pathway by inhibition of …
Holistic Correlation Measure For Enhanced Encapsulation Of Trait Heterogeneity And Discovery Of Co-Expression, Zachary Valleroy
Holistic Correlation Measure For Enhanced Encapsulation Of Trait Heterogeneity And Discovery Of Co-Expression, Zachary Valleroy
Theses
Large-scale, high-dimensional data analyses can be computationally prohibitive due to combinatorial explosion of the search space for finding complex patterns; a viable alternative is network modeling for abstraction and quantifying intrinsic data associations. Prominent network analysis methods furnish frameworks for model synthesis and validation but rely on standard correlation measures impaired by semi-supervised biases, latent heterogeneity, and uneven discretization techniques. Here we investigate a holistic measure for encapsulating data heterogeneity for enhanced efficacy of revealing complex patterns through network analysis. Our unique correlation metric, K-medoids Utility for Duo Original Similarities (Kudos), exhaustively factors real-valued analyte data to compute …

We report the construction and analysis of a new reference genome assembly for Rattus norvegicus, the laboratory rat, a widely used experimental animal model organism. The assembly has been adopted as the rat reference assembly by the Genome Reference Consortium and is named GRCr8. The assembly has employed 40× Pacific Biosciences (PacBio) HiFi sequencing coverage and scaffolding using optical mapping and Hi-C. We used genomic DNA from a male BN/NHsdMcwi (BN) rat of the same strain and from the same colony as the prior reference assembly, mRatBN7.2. The assembly is at chromosome level with 98.7% of the sequence assigned …

Diversity And Evenness Of Birds During Seasonal Paddy Farming Practice In Southwestern Sarawak, Ivana Berlinda Bilang, Mohamad Fizl Sidq Ramji, Siti Nurlydia Sazali, Andrew Alek Tuen, Wan Nurainie Wan Ismail
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The influence of seasonal paddy farming activities on the paddy field environment and its composition of birds could be visually observed but has yet to be systematically studied and is still relatively understudied in Malaysian Borneo. Earlier research relied solely on point counts and not using line transects or mist nets for data collection could have resulted in missing and biased findings. Thus, this study aims to evaluate and compare species diversity and evenness of birds in different paddy stages in southwestern Sarawak with previous studies conducted in the region. We reported a higher species richness than previous reports from …

SUMMARY: Technologies that produce spatial single-cell (SC) data have revolutionized the study of tissue microstructures and promise to advance personalized treatment of cancer by revealing new insights about the tumor microenvironment. Functional data analysis (FDA) is an ideal analytic framework for connecting cell spatial relationships to patient outcomes, but can be challenging to implement. To address this need, we present mxfda, an R package for end-to-end analysis of SC spatial data using FDA. mxfda implements a suite of methods to facilitate spatial analysis of SC imaging data using FDA techniques.
AVAILABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION: The mxfda R package is freely available …

Synthesis And Identification Of Triorganotin (Iv)-Tyrosine Complexes And Study Their Applications As Antioxidant By Dpph And Cuprac Methods., Rafid Ryyis Arraq, Angham G. Hadi
Baghdad Science Journal
Abstract Through condensation reactions between tyrosine (ligand) and triorganotin (IV) chloride salts in the presence of sodium hydroxide, three triorganotin (IV)-tyrosine complexes were successfully synthesized. All the components were dissolved in methanol and refluxed for five hours. The produced complexes were characterized by elemental analysis (CHN), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H, 13C and 119Sn-NMR). Based on spectrum measurements, trigonal bipyramidal geometries for the complexes produced in yields of 85–97% were assigned. Using the DPPH and CUPRAC methods, this study examined the antioxidant activity of tri organotin (IV)-tyrosine complexes. Due to the metal moiety, organotin (IV) …

Deep Learning Based Models For Drug-Target Interactions, Ali K. Abdul Raheem, Ban N. Dhannoon
Baghdad Science Journal
The typical drug development approach is slow, costly, and fraught with failure - scientists examine millions of compounds, but only a few make it to preclinical or clinical testing. Machine learning (ML), a subset of AI, is a fast-expanding subject many pharmaceutical businesses increasingly utilize. Incorporating machine learning technologies into the drug development process can aid in automating repetitive data processing and analysis processes. ML techniques may be used at several stages of drug development, including drug property prediction, drug-target interaction (DTI) prediction, and De Novo drug design. DTIs are a critical component of the drug development process. When a …

Opioid misuse, addiction, and associated overdose deaths remain global public health crises. Despite the tremendous need for pharmacological treatments, current options are limited in number, use, and effectiveness. Fundamental leaps forward in our understanding of the biology driving opioid addiction are needed to guide development of more effective medication-assisted therapies. This Review focuses on the omics-identified biological features associated with opioid addiction. Recent GWAS have begun to identify robust genetic associations, including variants in OPRM1, FURIN, and the gene cluster SCAI/PPP6C/RABEPK. An increasing number of omics studies of postmortem human brain tissue examining biological features (e.g., histone modification and gene …

Discovering Therapeutic Strategies In Colorectal Cancer Via Synthetic Lethal Genetic Screens On Patient-Derived Organoid Models, Sana Khalili
Theses and Dissertations
Precision medicine is a revolutionary approach of targeting genetic alterations that are present only in tumor cells to find vulnerabilities that can be targeted with therapy. Identifying genetic dependencies in human colon cancer could help identify effective treatment strategies. Genome-wide CRISPR-Cas9 dropout screens can reveal all genetic dependencies, some of which could be exploited as therapeutic targets using existing drugs.
In this dissertation, I comprehensively characterized genetic dependencies present in a colon cancer organoid avatar, and validated tumor-specific selectivity of select pharmacologic agents. I identified all somatic mutations, all expressed genes, and conducted a genome-wide CRISPR dropout screen to elucidate …

The platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is an amphibious, egg-laying mammal of high conservation value that is found only in Australia. The zoonotic bacterium Leptospira interrogans serovar Hardjo was discovered in platypuses in prior studies, but little is known about its epidemiology. Samples in the Platypus Serum Bank were tested in 2023 and the results were combined with historical records. Antibodies against L. interrogans serovar Hardjo were found in 50% of 464 serum samples from 411 platypuses collected from 14 river basins in southeastern Australia between 1981 and 2012; prevalence remained high over three decades in the Shoalhaven River population. Seroprevalence increased …
