Cultural Diversity In The Body Of Christ: An African American Theological Reading Of The Book Of Revelation, Charles Gilmer May 2024

Cultural Diversity In The Body Of Christ: An African American Theological Reading Of The Book Of Revelation, Charles Gilmer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study will attempt to facilitate a more helpful reading of the text of John’s Apocalypse by placing it in an appropriate literary and historical context, deploying an African American hermeneutic, informed by the work of African American commentators such as Brian Blount, Allen Dwight Callahan, Clarice Martin, and Shanell T. Smith to develop from the text of the Apocalypse its ecclesiological content for a contemporary audience. As the church writ large (Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant and indigenous expressions) wrestles with its increasing global presence and the cultural and linguistic diversity which that expanded presence creates, this study will attempt to …

Tragedy, Ownership, And Hospitality In Gerar: Lessons From Social Psychology, Moshe S. Rachmuth May 2024

Tragedy, Ownership, And Hospitality In Gerar: Lessons From Social Psychology, Moshe S. Rachmuth

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

Can the story of Isaac be read with tragedy in mind or is the second patriarch the comedic relief of Genesis? Scholars mostly see Isaac as the book’s fool and thus laughable. Even more clearly so in Gen 26:7-11 which recounts how, during the hunger migration of Isaac and Rebekah to Philistine Gerar, Isaac presented Rebekah as his sister. Comparing Genesis 26 with similar stories about Abraham and Sarah (Genesis 12, 20), Isaac and Rebekah are in lesser danger than Isaac’s parents. This work takes three steps to argue that the story supports the national identity of displaced Israelites. First, …

The Congregation In All Her Glory: How The History Of The Association Of Free Lutheran Congregations (Aflc) Can Be Used To Teach Free And Living Church Polity, Stephen Mark Mundfrom May 2024

The Congregation In All Her Glory: How The History Of The Association Of Free Lutheran Congregations (Aflc) Can Be Used To Teach Free And Living Church Polity, Stephen Mark Mundfrom

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

Among Lutheran denominations in America, the Association of Free Lutheran Congregations privileges the free activity of the congregation with a unique church polity. Because of its rarity, the AFLC is especially concerned that a correct understanding of its polity be taught at its schools and passed on effectively to future generations. One way to ensure that this occurs successfully is through a combination of theological and historical instruction. Historical education has been in decline for several hundred years due to developments in Western thought. Nevertheless, significant arguments can be made for the necessity of an historical and narrative understanding of …

Reimagining Constitutional Democracy For Human Flourishing: A Re-Reading Of Augustine’S Social Love, Ubuntu Ethics, And Cst For The Zambian, Boyd Kapyung Nyirenda May 2024

Reimagining Constitutional Democracy For Human Flourishing: A Re-Reading Of Augustine’S Social Love, Ubuntu Ethics, And Cst For The Zambian, Boyd Kapyung Nyirenda

Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations

Comparable to the person battered and left for dead and lying by the roadside, the poor in Zambia epitomized by the story of Regina Mukuka Nyirenda, a former civil servant, attest to the socioeconomic, political, and gender injustice ordinary suffer despite Zambia being a constitutional democracy and a Christian nation since 1991. Although, in theory, it ascribes to the dignity and rights of everyone without discriminating, the liberalist human rights regime (framework) underlying Zambia’s constitutional laws since colonialism promotes the flourishing of the elite neoliberalist class while perpetuating socioeconomic, political, and gender injustice. Conversely, it undermines the thriving of the …

The Preferential Option For The Poorest Street Children In Kinshasa, Democratic Republic Of Congo: A Study Based On John Sobrino’S Theological Framework, Stanislas Kimpeye Mundibi May 2024

The Preferential Option For The Poorest Street Children In Kinshasa, Democratic Republic Of Congo: A Study Based On John Sobrino’S Theological Framework, Stanislas Kimpeye Mundibi

Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations

This thesis explores child poverty in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), within the Preferential Option for the Poor (POP) context. The POP, a core principle of Catholic Social Teaching, emphasizes the obligation to position the needs of society's marginalized and impoverished at the forefront of moral and ethical considerations. The study, grounded in the theological framework of John Sobrino, delves into the plight of Kinshasa's street children, a direct manifestation of prolonged material poverty. It investigates the underlying causes, the multifaceted nature of poverty, and its implications on children's well-being and survival. The thesis examines the role of the …

Queering The Beginning: A Poetic Exploration Of Genesis And Creation, Bradford C. Huddleston May 2024

Queering The Beginning: A Poetic Exploration Of Genesis And Creation, Bradford C. Huddleston

2024 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

The Bible is one of the most influential texts in Western literature, shaping literature, politics, and culture since its introduction. The book of Genesis contains some of the most iconic stories from the Bible, such as the Garden of Eden, Noah’s Flood, and the Tower of Babel. This project will break down the text through literary analysis and the creation of a poetry collection to reveal how the text understands and explores the concept of queerness. The Book of Genesis contains a variety of queer concepts that are often neglected by traditional Biblical scholarship. This poetry collection aims to queer …

The Impact Of Biblical Women's Stories On Entrepreneurial Identity Formation:A Phenomenological Study Of Kenyan Women Entrepreneurs In The Diaspora, Lydia Githinji May 2024

The Impact Of Biblical Women's Stories On Entrepreneurial Identity Formation:A Phenomenological Study Of Kenyan Women Entrepreneurs In The Diaspora, Lydia Githinji

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This phenomenological study examines how biblical narratives and stories of strong female role models shape the entrepreneurial identity of Kenyan and Kenyan-American women. Ten female entrepreneurs were interviewed to understand these influences on their development. Themes emerged around mentorship, leadership, resilience, communication, networking, and legacy. Participants interpreted biblical tales through an entrepreneurial lens, resonating with the experiences and qualities of figures like Lydia, Deborah, Ruth, Esther, and the Proverbs 31 woman. Two key differences arose: those with closer African ties referenced the Bible more, and some cited male rather than female mentors. To address diverse perspectives, recommendations include balancing biblical …
