Evangelical Mental Health During A Pandemic: A Three-Way Interaction Analysis, Michael Sean Williams Apr 2022

Evangelical Mental Health During A Pandemic: A Three-Way Interaction Analysis, Michael Sean Williams

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

COVID-19 quickly became a global pandemic and a biological disaster. Mental health deteriorated due to fear, stress, isolation, and loneliness. Symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress, and disturbed sleep have been associated with COVID-19. There is limited research on mental health and well-being among evangelical Christians. A primary concern is that church congregants and leaders are tired and struggle with mental health issues. Thus, care for the congregation and community is limited. The rate of distress and depression among the religious is on the rise. The purpose of this quantitative research is to evaluate the interaction of perceived stress and emotional …

Exploring Perceptions About American Theological Institutions In Preparing Worship Pastors For Service, Phillip Sandifer

Dissertations

ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the current and historical information available, highlighting the issues and considerations, regarding Worship Pastors in conservative evangelical churches and the preparatory work for service offered by theological educational institutions and that which is expected by their prospective employers. Stakeholders for this research are aspiring Worship Pastors, Churches (their prospective employers), and conservative, evangelical theological educational institutions.

In addition to the literature review, this qualitative phenomenological study involved interviews of 15 church Executive Pastors, 1 Pastor, 2 Worship Pastors, and the Director of a professional organization that consults Executive Pastors nationwide. Also examined were current curriculums of …

The Sinner’S Prayer: An Inappropriate Ritual For Thai Christian Culture And A Suggested Replacement, Kelly M. Hilderbrand Mar 2022

The Sinner’S Prayer: An Inappropriate Ritual For Thai Christian Culture And A Suggested Replacement, Kelly M. Hilderbrand

Great Commission Research Journal

The practice of encouraging seekers to say the sinner’s prayer has become commonplace in Thailand. However, the practice is relatively recent and has developed out of Western individualistic assumptions. It is not an explicitly biblical practice and has serious practical problems, producing decisions for Christ that often do not result in a long-term commitment to Christianity. The practice also runs counter to many Thai cultural norms and can be harmful to evangelism and discipleship in Thailand. This article suggests a different approach, the prayer challenge.

Counteracting Systemic Racism The Role Of The Multiethnic Church, Janice Wilson Mar 2022

Counteracting Systemic Racism The Role Of The Multiethnic Church, Janice Wilson

Doctor of Ministry

The study explores how the multiethnic church can be a healing agent to counteract systemic racism in a multiethnic church in Richardson, Texas. Systemic racism is a critical issue confronting human society today. In recent years, the global community has united in condemning any form of racial discrimination, particularly against persons of African heritage.

The multiethnic church encourages ecumenism that transcends the racial barriers that have been inherent in Christian worship in the United States. For one, the study suggests that church officials could ease the advancement of the multiethnic church by increasing awareness of systemic racism to members of …

Rescue Mission: Transformational Recovery Through Expository Preaching And Teaching, David Allen Mayes Ii Mar 2022

Rescue Mission: Transformational Recovery Through Expository Preaching And Teaching, David Allen Mayes Ii

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The declining church stands in desperate need of regeneration, recovery, and revitalization. The primary goal for this thesis project is to lead Unity Missionary Baptist Church to a Christ-oriented, gospel-centered, and fruit-focused ministry. This endeavor implements an eight-week reconciling gospel program consisting of the sermon series Rescue Mission, eight small group discussions focused on the early church in the book of Acts, and forty-eight devotional verses for the congregation to experience spiritual growth and health. The church will discover that God’s Declaration is essential for a kingdom ministry. Ultimately becoming doers of the Word and not simply hearers. The quantitative …

Toxic And Nontoxic Leadership: Examining The Relationships Among Variables In The Toxic Triangle, Barry Cushman Mar 2022

Toxic And Nontoxic Leadership: Examining The Relationships Among Variables In The Toxic Triangle, Barry Cushman

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this combined quantitative experimental and ex post facto survey study was to explore the relationships between followers' perceptions of toxic and nontoxic leadership and how those relationships are associated with followers' self-reported follower variables, specifically, general self-efficacy (GSE), work engagement (WE), and job satisfaction (JS) with and without any effects of Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) in-group/out group status, organizational culture (OC), workgroup cohesion (WGC), and follower sex. Together, the three domains of the toxic triangle (leaders, susceptible followers, and environment) are believed to covary to support toxic leadership. Variables from all domains were assessed to explore how they …

Demonization Of Christians: Missiological Perspectives And Implications, Michée Badé Mar 2022

Demonization Of Christians: Missiological Perspectives And Implications, Michée Badé

Journal of Adventist Mission Studies

This article is a missiological reflection on the phenomenon of Christian demonization from a Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) perspective. The article argues from the four voices approach in theology (see Cameron et al. 2010; Cameron and Duce 2013), and contends that Christians can be demonized, have been demonized throughout the Christian church history, and are still demonized today across all Christian denomination lines. This is the position that appears in a few SDA publications, and is not in contradiction with the Scriptures. I suggest that demonization and demon possession are etymologically and phenomenologically the same. Thus, this paper builds on the …

An Exploratory Sequential Mixed Methods Study Of Phronetic Administrative Competencies In Experienced Student Ministry Practitioners, Tripp Atkinson Mar 2022

An Exploratory Sequential Mixed Methods Study Of Phronetic Administrative Competencies In Experienced Student Ministry Practitioners, Tripp Atkinson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

While the impact of a healthy student ministry in the local church is culture-shaping and eternally significant, many churches are not experiencing success in this ministry area. Among the many challenges modern student ministry face, a high turnover rate and perceived lack of competence among student ministry professionals contribute to this lack of sustained fruitful ministry (Devries, 2008). In many cases, the lack of competence is a primary contributing factor to the turnover. While a number of studies have identified the necessity of student ministry professionals possessing sound administrative competencies in sustaining success, a significant gap in the literature exists, …

Connecting Youth To The Gospel: The Role Of Theology And Apologetics, John Wesley Sales Iv Mar 2022

Connecting Youth To The Gospel: The Role Of Theology And Apologetics, John Wesley Sales Iv

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Connecting youth to the Gospel sounds like a basic undertaking. However, evidence shows students know very little about the Gospel. While they grow up in church and attend Sunday school, there is still a lack of desire from students to want to know who God is. There needs to be a path to teaching students the genuine and deep teachings of the Gospel. This topic is important because as students grow older, they may grow apart from what they learned in Sunday school. When they are challenged and distracted by the world, they need a strong anchor to keep them …

Increasing Church Growth Potential Through Education And Implementation Of The Biblically Defined Roles Of The Pastor And The Body Of Christ, Gregory Alan Kincaid Mar 2022

Increasing Church Growth Potential Through Education And Implementation Of The Biblically Defined Roles Of The Pastor And The Body Of Christ, Gregory Alan Kincaid

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This action research project focuses on church growth. It posits that if a congregation is taught and implements the biblical roles of the pastor and the church Body, then the church should grow quantitatively and qualitatively. To test this assumption, the roles of the pastor and that of the Body were delineated, taught, and practiced throughout a year-long study. Emphasis was placed on how God equipped every member of the Body to perform ministry within the church and outreach from the church. To reinforce the differences in the roles, study participants were required to actively participate in life groups with …

An Assessment Of Dropout Rates Of Former Student Ministry Participants In Self-Identified Evangelical Churches With 500-2000 In Weekly Attendance, Derik Wade Idol Mar 2022

An Assessment Of Dropout Rates Of Former Student Ministry Participants In Self-Identified Evangelical Churches With 500-2000 In Weekly Attendance, Derik Wade Idol

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Over the last quarter-century, there has been a consistent call to reconceptualization and at times reject the youth ministry task resulting from the universally accepted church dropout statistic post-high school graduation. In 2008, Brandon Shields presented a falsification study that disproved the theory that high school graduates are leaving the church at a rate of 70-90% at Southern Baptist Megachurches. The purpose of this study was to examine the claim that 70-90% of youth ministry graduates are leaving the church by researching 17 self-identified Evangelical churches of 500-2000 in average church attendance. The research design was a quantitative replication study …

Priests Of A Fallen Creation: The Temple, Natural Theology, And Ecology In Dialogue, Eric Long Feb 2022

Priests Of A Fallen Creation: The Temple, Natural Theology, And Ecology In Dialogue, Eric Long

Speakers & Events

As we try to make sense of both creation’s goodness and decay, Dr. Long proposes that a fruitful path forward involves synthesizing recent advances in the three fields: natural sciences (with an emphasis on ecology), natural theology (with an emphasis on Christian natural theology), and Biblical theology (with an emphasis on reading creation as God’s earthly temple). In the lecture, Dr. Long will first develop this three-pronged, interdisciplinary approach. Then, he will demonstrate how this approach may prove fruitful in addressing five, roughly chronological, questions ranging from creation to eschatology:

  • Why does creation exist?
  • How can we interpret the “goodness” …

Disrupting The Shard Perspective: Leading A Culture Of Justice For The Reimagined Church, Shermika Harvey Feb 2022

Disrupting The Shard Perspective: Leading A Culture Of Justice For The Reimagined Church, Shermika Harvey

Doctor of Leadership

Justice issues undulate amid society. They are entrenched into society's substructures, philosophy, traditions, and behaviors, and often stand uncontested over centuries. Biblically and historically, the Church's counteractions toward society's ills bestowed a sense of peace and community amid justice issues. However, as the justice crisis has increased steadily in the United States since the 1950s, the Church's presence submerged instead of being the forerunner. Therefore, many evangelical churches in the United States are viewed through their silence regarding injustice.

The Church, designed as a foundational agent for social and cultural change, stands at the cusp of a revolutionary historic moment, …

Kingdom Millennials Infiltrating Culture: Reaching In Toward Generation Y To Reach Out To The World, Daniel Clark Iv Feb 2022

Kingdom Millennials Infiltrating Culture: Reaching In Toward Generation Y To Reach Out To The World, Daniel Clark Iv

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

As protestant Christianity meanders through time from its roots as a light post of religious ritualism to a contemporary beacon of Christ-centered worship, there has been a noticeable scattering of a critical portion of its congregants commonly known as the Millennial generation. While their absence is obvious across the entire Christian landscape, the evidence of their displacement is most definite in the small inner-city Black Church context. The writer attributes the cause of the Millennial diaspora to the unconscious loss of humanity’s God-given purpose: to exclusively worship Him forever. It is apparent that an absent generation will garner a ripple …

Christ And American Culture- Some Biblical Reflections, Paul Raabe Jan 2022

Christ And American Culture- Some Biblical Reflections, Paul Raabe

Concordia Pages

Going beyond H. Richard Neibuhr’s famous paradox model on “Christ and Culture,” Dr. Paul Raabe contends for a biblical, dynamic tension that exists between the culture and the faith. Using the image of a house, Raabe explores four “rooms” : (1) Christianity affirms culture in some respects; (2) Christianity opposes culture in some respects; (3) Christianity leavens culture in some ways; and (4) Christianity uses cultural forms to communicate its message. Each of the four rooms needs to be lived in for maintaining the tension presented in the Scriptures as a faithful witness to the lordship of Christ.

“Daddy, Will Animals Be In Heaven?”- The Future New Earth, Paul Raabe Jan 2022

“Daddy, Will Animals Be In Heaven?”- The Future New Earth, Paul Raabe

Concordia Pages

In this Concordia Pages Dr. Raabe has us focus on the earth as a new creation. He says “‘Daddy, will animals be in heaven?’ That is a common question and a good question. It gets at the big picture. What does the post-resurrection look like? What kind of eschatological future do you lay out before your people? What do you teach your people?”

Thomas O'Shaughnessy, Sj & Fazlur Rahman: The Incarnation In The Qur'Ān, Renato T. Oliveros Phd Jan 2022

Thomas O'Shaughnessy, Sj & Fazlur Rahman: The Incarnation In The Qur'Ān, Renato T. Oliveros Phd

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

The Incarnation of Jesus Christ (Eisa al-Masih), a central Christian doctrine that the eternal “Word became flesh” is confirmed in the Qur'ān as the Logos named the Christ (Q. 3:45). The Spirit (Ruh) in Surah 19, and the Word (Christ) in Surah 3 confirm the Incarnation narrative in the Gospels of Luke 1 and John 1. In the spirit of Ignatius’ openness to extra-Biblical sources in the Spiritual Exercises (SPEX), Qur’ānic sources can be integrated in the Ignatian contemplation on the Incarnation. O’Shaughnessy and F. Rahman argue that the Rūḥ al-qudus ( القدس روح , “Holy Spirit”) is not the …

Repent And Believe In The Gospel: Lex Orandi And Lex Credendi In The Ash Wednesday Liturgy ., Anthony John D. Javier Jan 2022

Repent And Believe In The Gospel: Lex Orandi And Lex Credendi In The Ash Wednesday Liturgy ., Anthony John D. Javier

Loyola Papers

This paper examines the principle lex orandi, lex credendi through the Ash Wednesday liturgy, focusing on the imposition of ashes and its accompanying formulas. Drawing from biblical, theological, and liturgical sources, it explores ashes as symbols of repentance, mortality, penance, and hope. The study highlights how the Church’s prayers and rituals express and shape faith, revealing a coherent relationship between belief and worship. The formulas “Remember that you are dust” and “Repent and believe in the Gospel” are analyzed as catechetical expressions of Christian life. Ultimately, the paper emphasizes that liturgy forms believers to live authentically what they celebrate.

Johannine Mariology In John 2: 1-11 And Jn 19: 25-27, Azam Mansha Jan 2022

Johannine Mariology In John 2: 1-11 And Jn 19: 25-27, Azam Mansha

Loyola Papers

This paper explores Johannine Mariology through an exegetical study of John 2:1–11 and John 19:25–27, highlighting Mary’s evolving role within the Fourth Gospel. It examines the symbolic and theological significance of Mary as “woman,” linking her to the figure of Zion and the new people of God. At Cana, she emerges as the first believer who mediates faith and points others to Jesus, while at the Cross, she is entrusted with a maternal role in the formation of the believing community. The study underscores Mary’s discipleship, faith, and representative function within the Johannine vision of salvation history.
