#Choosetochallenge: Covid-19, Community Research, And The Canaanite Woman, Ma. Marilou S. Ibita, Maricel S. Ibita

Theology Department Faculty Publications

This study theologises on the Urban Poor Women and Children with Academics for Reaching and Delivering on UNSDGs in the Philippines (UPWARD-UP) Project research team’s collaboration with the Alliance of Peoples’ Organisation Along the Manggahan Floodway (Alliance), Philippines. We posit that the theological process of see-judge-act, enhanced with evaluate-celebrate/ritualise, using feminist biblical characterisation in interpreting Matthew 15:21-28, serves as a spiritual resource for Christians working for the urban poor realisation of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. The Canaanite woman challenged Jesus’ identity and mission impacting on Christology and ecclesiology. This characterisation makes her …

Imago Dei, Shalom, And Success In Christian Leadership, Alice A. Obare Jan 2023

Imago Dei, Shalom, And Success In Christian Leadership, Alice A. Obare

Journal of Applied Christian Leadership

The conversation regarding worldviews and Christian leadership is a significant one because these ideas can greatly influence social and organizational interactions, actions, and decision-making processes. Just because a leader identifies as a Christian does not necessarily mean that their leadership is Christian-based. Christian leadership is only considered to be so when it is anchored on biblical faith. Furthermore, faith must influence the leader’s actions and decisions on issues such as policy, organizational structure, or the development of programs and how they are implemented. The understanding of Imago Dei and Shalom can greatly impact one’s leadership by shaping their actions, behaviors, …

Centered On Christ: The Book Of Enos Possibly Structured Chiastically, Stephen Kent Ehat Jan 2023

Centered On Christ: The Book Of Enos Possibly Structured Chiastically, Stephen Kent Ehat

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The book of Enos is considered to be a short, one-chapter treatise on prayer, yet it is more. Close examination of its text reveals it to be a text structurally centered on Christ and the divine covenant. Enos seeks and obtains from Him a covenant to preserve the records of the Nephites for the salvation of the Lamanites. Enos prays not only for his own remission of sins but also for the salvation both of his own people, the Nephites, and also of the Lamanites. He yearns in faith that the Lord will preserve the records of his people for …

Transgenerational Wellness: Trauma Informed Christian Spiritual Formation, Winford Amos Jan 2023

Transgenerational Wellness: Trauma Informed Christian Spiritual Formation, Winford Amos

Doctor of Ministry

Certain mindsets, processes, and practices produce health inequities and disparities including poor spiritual health. Young adults between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five years old are experiencing challenges with mental health and substance use resulting in a high rate of suicides and overdose related deaths. Many are experiencing co-occurring substance use and mental health challenges and have a history of trauma. There are limited options available for integrated treatment. Accessibility to services is very difficult due to limited providers and limited resources at this age. Church attendance has decreased significantly for young adults which limits the capacity of the church …

Forming The Conscience Of Young Vietnamese, Thien Duc Vu Jan 2023

Forming The Conscience Of Young Vietnamese, Thien Duc Vu

LMU Theses and Dissertations

Many current theories (e.g., individualism, materialism, relativism, etc.) exalt individual freedom as an absolute. They ignore the voice of universal truth as a principle of conscience and instead place conscience underneath individual choice. The concept of individual freedom in this way is influencing the conscience of many young Vietnam people to make decisions that destroy and jeopardize moral human life (e.g., abortion, transgender, same-sex marriage, murder, etc.). Educating young people to see themselves as God’s children by forming their conscience is an urgent obligation for the Vietnamese Catholic Church. Thus, my PSP is to follow past practices of the Church’s …

A Case Study Of Limitation Awareness Concerning Converge North Central Senior Pastors, Adam Sidler

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Considering the obstacles Senior Pastors face within their churches, “A Case Study of Limitation Awareness Concerning Converge North Central Senior Pastors” is a project to address the following research questions: (1) To what level are Converge North Central (CNC) Senior Pastors aware of their limitations and need for emotional wellness and mental health? (2) If aware, how are CNC Senior Pastors addressing their emotional wellness and mental health? There is plenty of research and material illuminating burnout amongst Senior Pastors in their lives and ministry context. However, little research points to the level of awareness Senior Pastors have regarding their …

Narrative Theology In An African Context, Rebecca Makanyara Chizema-Makayi

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The African Shona have yet to find a religion that accepts and cherishes their spiritual and cultural heritage. A theology that accommodates their social and cultural progress while allowing them to express their cultural evolution and practices is needed. As Zimbabwe was colonized by the British from Britain or the United Kingdom in Western Europe, this research will investigate if British colonial periods impacted traditional Shona perspectives about God, beliefs, humanity, and their role in the context of globalization. Christian Shona Africans are still undergoing an identity crisis due to the unfavorable concepts and actions of British colonialism as well …

Shared Leadership As A Tool For Leadership Development In Multicultural Congregations, Darryl E. Seay

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project studied shared leadership in multicultural congregations to determine if it serves as a tool for leadership development. There is limited empirical data on shared leadership in multicultural congregations and even less on the use of shared leadership as a tool for leadership development in multicultural churches. A multiple case study was conducted involving three multicultural churches in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Twenty-two leaders, from the three churches, were interviewed to assess the presence and practice of shared leadership within the congregations. Four themes emerged from the interview data: shared leadership lightens the load for the primary leaders, everyone has a …

The Body Of Christ And The Law: A Comparative Study Of Romans 7:4 And Galatians 2:19, Dominic Bornand Jan 2023

The Body Of Christ And The Law: A Comparative Study Of Romans 7:4 And Galatians 2:19, Dominic Bornand

Dissertations

In Romans and Galatians, Paul refers to a spiritual death to sin (Rom 6:2) and to the law (Rom 7:4; Gal 2:19). As the means of the believer's death to the law, Paul mentions the "body of Christ" in Rom 7:4 and the "law" in Gal 2:19. These verses seem to suggest some sort of relationship between the body of Christ and the law, as well as between the law and sin. The purpose of this study is to determine the type of relationship between the body of Christ and the law, as well as between law and sin. The …

Understanding Secularized People Of Metro Manila: A Case Study Approach For A Contextualized Urban Ministry Strategy, Ermela T. Dizon

Dissertations DIS

Problem

Secularization shapes people's thinking, feeling, and behaving in the cities. Yearly, there is a rise in the number of de-religionized or secularized people in cities of the world who engage in pursuits of materialism and show declining interest in religion. Sociologists and missiologists postulate about the spectrum of secularity and the variety of secularism in different context. Since Metro Manila is one of the world's top highly urbanized and densely populated cities, the Seventh-day Adventist Church encounters challenges in reaching its secularized people. It is a new turf for the church. Pastors trained for rural settings may not understand …

Pastors can face difficulties when trying to shepherd unregenerate people in their congregations. This qualitative case study investigated the characteristics of the difficulties and what effects they can have on pastors. A biblical and theological review of the book of Matthew provided an understanding of the theme of the “many and the few,” the wide and narrow gates, wolves in sheep’s clothing, and judging others. In addition, Matthew’s Gospel provided an understanding of defining the unregenerate and regenerate. The pastoral epistles of 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus provided a theological understanding of pastors' roles, responsibilities, and duties in relation …

Thwarted Belongingness And Burdensomeness As Moderators Between Entrapment And Suicide Ideation In College Students, Tupelo Witte Jan 2023

Thwarted Belongingness And Burdensomeness As Moderators Between Entrapment And Suicide Ideation In College Students, Tupelo Witte

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

College students are amid their search for identity development, desire to meet social expectations, and are juggling stressors that often lead to mental health concerns including suicidality. The integrated motivational-volitional model of suicidal behavior has established a three-phase framework to describe the process of suicidality. Life factors and feelings of defeat lead to entrapment and suicidal ideation followed by suicidal ideation and behaviors, as influenced or intervened by moderating factors. This study used data from the American College Health Association National College Health Assessment III to further investigate the integrated motivational-volitional model and specifically the motivational phase and relationship between …

Calvin’S Doctrine Of Divine Accommodation And Its Correspondence With The Methodist Triumvirate, J. Russell Frazier Jan 2023

Calvin’S Doctrine Of Divine Accommodation And Its Correspondence With The Methodist Triumvirate, J. Russell Frazier

The Asbury Journal

The doctrine of accommodation is the idea that God has, out of love, accommodated divine revelation to human frailty and sinfulness. This article summarizes the contributions of secondary resources on the doctrine of divine accommodation in John Calvin’s thought. These sources provide a paradigm for examining the doctrine of accommodation in the thought of the Methodist triumvirate, i.e., John and Charles Wesley and John William Fletcher. The author emphasizes that the Methodist triumvirate adopted and adapted the doctrine of accommodation and suggests that it provided a theological underpinning for the early Methodists’ accommodative practice of ministry.

A Strategy To Improve Contextualization At Hope Channel International, Vyacheslav Demyan Jan 2023

A Strategy To Improve Contextualization At Hope Channel International, Vyacheslav Demyan

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Hope Channel International was created by the Seventh-day Adventist Church with the mission “to offer God’s good news for a better life today and for eternity through the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s wholistic understanding of the Bible” (General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists 2019–2020, 459). However, as many other evangelical media ministries in North America who are mainly “preaching to the choir,” creating their own “gospel ghettos” (Woods 2013, 22), Hope Channel’s audience mainly are the members of the Adventist Church. This compromises the scope of the existence of Hope Channel as a media brand. From the structural perspective, Hope Channel …
