Esau, Son Of Isaac And Grandson Of Abraham: The Model Of A Faithful Son, Moshe Reiss Jan 2014

Esau, Son Of Isaac And Grandson Of Abraham: The Model Of A Faithful Son, Moshe Reiss

The Asbury Journal

The story of Esau and Jacob, the two powerful sons of Isaac and Rebekah is one of the several conflicting families noted in the book of Genesis. Jacob, whose other name is Israel, is the father of the twelve tribes and thus the founder of the Jewish people. Rebekah may be the most pow- erful of the matriarchs; the one God talks to directly about her role in the covenant. The reconciliation of the brothers is one of the more powerful descriptions in the Bible.

Creatio Ex Amore Dei: Creation Out Of Nothing And God’S Relational Nature, Samuel J. Youngs Jan 2014

Creatio Ex Amore Dei: Creation Out Of Nothing And God’S Relational Nature, Samuel J. Youngs

The Asbury Journal

The opinion of many feminist thinkers and process theologians has been that Christianity needs to shed its allegiance to a God conceived in terms of omnipotent sovereignty. As an alternative, many of them have envisioned God in more relational categories, focusing on the metaphysically “limited” nature of God, with the first step along this path often being a refutation of the traditional doctrine of creatio ex nihilo. This essay summarizes such critiques before proceeding to argue that a robust understanding of creatio ex nihilo, viewed through the lens of kenosis, can actually speak more effectively to God’s relational nature and …

Written With The Finger Of God: Divine And Human Writing In Exodus, Brian R. Doak Jan 2014

Written With The Finger Of God: Divine And Human Writing In Exodus, Brian R. Doak

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

"The presence of writing in the book of Exodus must be considered not only for its contribution to the narrative as story, but also as a witness to several key socio-political issues (such as the interplay of textuality and orality in ancient Israel), for the role of writing in the history of Israel's religion, and for the struggle to define, through several centuries and editorial layers, the nature of YHWH's "true image'' in the world."

“You Shall Write On The Stones”: Deuteronomy 27 And The Inscribing Of Ritual Curses (Society Of Biblical Literature: San Diego, 2014), Melissa Ramos Jan 2014

“You Shall Write On The Stones”: Deuteronomy 27 And The Inscribing Of Ritual Curses (Society Of Biblical Literature: San Diego, 2014), Melissa Ramos

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

In Deut 27 Moses commands the elders of Israel, once they have crossed the Jordan and arrived at Mount Ebal, to erect large stones and write on them את–כל–דברי התורה הזאת “all the words of this torah.” I would like to begin by asking the question “What was written on the stones?” In the narrative, what formed the content envisioned in such an inscription? This question is important for the discussion of how chapter 27 fits into the broader compositional schema of Deuteronomy.

Sorting Out The Sources In Scripture, Jeffrey M. Bradshaw Jan 2014

Sorting Out The Sources In Scripture, Jeffrey M. Bradshaw

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

To date, LDS scholars have largely ignored the important but rather complex questions about how primary sources may have been authored and combined to form the Bible as we have it today. David Bokovoy’s book, one of a projected series of volumes on the authorship of the Old Testament, is intended to rectify this deficiency, bringing the results of scholarship in Higher Criticism into greater visibility within the LDS community. Though readers may not agree in every respect with the book’s analysis and results, particularly with its characterization of the Books of Moses and Abraham as “inspired pseudepigrapha,” Bokovoy has …

Can A Man See God? 1 Timothy 6:16 In Light Of Ancient And Modern Revelation, James Stutz Jan 2014

Can A Man See God? 1 Timothy 6:16 In Light Of Ancient And Modern Revelation, James Stutz

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Joseph Smith’s First Vision is a favorite target of critics of the LDS Church. Evangelical critics in particular, such as Matt Slick of the Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry, seek to discredit the First Vision on biblical grounds. This article explores biblical theophanies and argues that Joseph’s vision fits squarely with the experience of ancient prophets, especially those who are given the rare blessing of piercing the veil of light and glory within which God dwells, the Hebrew kabod.

The One Table Of Christ's Word And Body: The Unity Of Scripture And Eucharist In Dei Verbum And Its Theological Precursors, Robert Matthew London

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Henri de Lubac heavily impacted the Second Vatican Council, Dei Verbum in particular. De Lubac immensely contributed toward the renewal of the ancient doctrine of the One Table, especially with his eucharistic ecclesiology (that found its way into Lumen Gentium), and his retrieval of spiritual exegesis, especially through the genius of Origen. Chapters two and three of this dissertation present a synopsis of de Lubac's retrieval of scriptural exegesis and his eucharistic ecclesiology.

Potomac Conference Adcom Team Transitional Journey From Hierarchical To Servant Leadership, William K. Miller Jan 2014

Potomac Conference Adcom Team Transitional Journey From Hierarchical To Servant Leadership, William K. Miller

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. The research of Wong and Page (2003) has suggested that no denominational church leadership models utilize a biblical servant leadership model. Most denominational leadership models utilize some form of an authoritarian hierarchical model. This suggests the need for a curriculum that can assist a denominational leadership team to transition to a biblical servant leadership model.

Methodology. This project utilized a qualitative methodology. A curriculum was developed utilizing assessments, seminars, coaching, and group feedback in order to create an environment to transition to a biblical servant leadership model for the Potomac Conference ADCOM team.

Results. There were seven members of …

Major Structural Relationships: A Survey Of Origins, Development, Classifications, And Assessment, Fredrick J. Long Jan 2014

Major Structural Relationships: A Survey Of Origins, Development, Classifications, And Assessment, Fredrick J. Long

The Journal of Inductive Biblical Studies

A central feature to Inductive Bible Study (IBS) are Major Structural Relationships (MSRs), despite some variation in the number, identification, descriptions, and organization of them. These relationships are endemic to human communication; hence, their description is vital for accurate and holistic observation of biblical materials. The origin of MSRs is traceable to the 19th century art instruction of John Ruskin. He himself was aware that his insights into composition extended beyond artistic to musical and literary composition. Practitioners of IBS have continued to develop and describe rigorously methodologies surrounding the identification of MSRs, especially at Asbury Theological Seminary. A survey …

Sociorhetorical Interpretation (Sri) And Inductive Bible Study (Ibs): Outlines Of Mark, The Lord’S Prayer, And The Son’S Prayer In John 17, Vernon K. Robbins Jan 2014

Sociorhetorical Interpretation (Sri) And Inductive Bible Study (Ibs): Outlines Of Mark, The Lord’S Prayer, And The Son’S Prayer In John 17, Vernon K. Robbins

The Journal of Inductive Biblical Studies

There are many things in common between Inductive Bible Study (IBS) and Sociorhetorical Interpretation (SRI) as I practice it in the context of the Rhetoric of Religious Antiquity (RRA) project.1 Many of the similarities are a result of detailed focus on texts. The multiple strategies of interpreting both the inner texture and the intertexture of texts in SRI share much in common with IBS. As a result, many of the strategies of analysis and interpretation in the sections on “Observing and Asking” and “Answering or Interpreting”2 in particular are highly congenial with or naturally integral to SRI.

Understanding The Wife Of Proverbs 31, Amy Sieg Jan 2014

Understanding The Wife Of Proverbs 31, Amy Sieg

Senior Honors Theses

Sometimes understanding the Bible is difficult, especially when one has no understanding of the cultural background for the passage. Having an example of what the Lord sees as an excellent wife is invaluable. The Proverbs 31:10-31 passage describes character qualities of an admirable wife that the reader can practically apply to everyday life. An understanding of the Hebrew culture aids in the understanding of the excellent wife in the passage. This paper will include cultural background information and word studies. It will also integrate other Old Testament and New Testament scriptures that will further contribute to the readers understanding of …

Messianic Jewish Liturgical Practices, Elizabeth Ames Jan 2014

Messianic Jewish Liturgical Practices, Elizabeth Ames

Senior Honors Theses

This thesis explores the current liturgical practices of mainstream Messianic Judaism in the United States using literary and ethnographic research. It examines the historical, biblical, and theological basis for the worship practices used. The origins of their worship practices are evaluated to ascertain whether they reflect charismatic Christian, Jewish denominational or biblical practice. A combination of literary research and qualitative research are used to define the movement; give a brief but comprehensive history of it; and, finally, explain and examine its worship practices. Leaders of the Messianic movement were interviewed for the qualitative research. The findings revealed that a distinction …

"Who Are You, My Daughter [יתב תא ימ]?" A Reassessment Of Ruth And Naomi In Ruth 3, Edward Allen Jones Iii Jan 2014

"Who Are You, My Daughter [יתב תא ימ]?" A Reassessment Of Ruth And Naomi In Ruth 3, Edward Allen Jones Iii

Faculty Publications - George Fox Digital

IN RUTH 3:16, as Ruth returns to Naomi after her night with Boaz on the threshing floor, Naomi inquires, "Who are you, my daughter [יתב תא ימ]?"1 The question seems simple, yet both the ancient versions and modem commentators are perplexed. Who apart from Ruth would be entering Naomi's house so early in the morning, and if Naomi knows that it is Ruth, why does she ask for her identity? Scholars have suggested a number of solutions to resolve this tension, but none is entirely convincing. Thus, after reviewing past interpretations, I argue that we can best understand this verse …

Dando Um Jeito: An Integrated Theological, Historical, Cultural And Strategic Study Of Missio Dei To, In And Through Brazil, Joao Mordomo

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Since it’s descobrimento on April 22nd, 1500, Brazil proved to be resistant to Protestant and Evangelical Christianity until the 20th century. However, by the end of the century, Brazil had, in many missiologists’ minds, transitioned from being a missionary field to a missionary force. There is one Brazilian trait in particular that serves well to describe both God as He has orchestrated the evangelization of Brazil, and Brazilians as they increasingly have fulfilled their role in God’s global mission to, in and through Brazil. This trait is summarized in the expression dar um jeito (pronounced “darh oon jhei’-to”). While a …

Enoch And The City Of Zion: Can An Entire Community Ascend To Heaven?, David J. Larsen Jan 2014

Enoch And The City Of Zion: Can An Entire Community Ascend To Heaven?, David J. Larsen

BYU Studies

One of the most significant additions to the Book of Genesis in Joseph Smith's inspired translation of the Bible is to the story of the prophet Enoch, who the biblical record briefly implies was taken up into heaven alive. In Joseph Smith's rendering of the story, however, not only Enoch, as an individual, ascends into heaven, but also his entire community. This article explores the notion of communal ascent in ancient Jewish and Christian literature and seeks to find affinities with the story of Enoch's Zion found in the LDS Book of Moses. Ancient narratives such as The History of …

The Gospel According To Mark -- Chapter 3 Of "From Crisis To Christ: A Contextual Introduction To The New Testament", Paul N. Anderson Jan 2014

The Gospel According To Mark -- Chapter 3 Of "From Crisis To Christ: A Contextual Introduction To The New Testament", Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt from Part II: Features of Mark:

Mark has nο birth narrative; it simply begins with announcing "The beginning of the good news about Jesus Christ, God' s Son" (Mark 1 : 1 ) . Good news, of course, is what the word gospel means. As a herald would sound a declaration of the emperor, so the first of the Gospel writers declares the good news of what God has done through the life, death, and resurrection of Christ Jesus. This is similar also to Paul's language. Yet Mark does far more than outline the Christ Events; Mark also constructs …
