Gwu School Of Divinity Welcomes Chinese Christian Leaders For Intensive Training, Office Of University Communications
Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive
Two leaders from government-registered Christian churches in China visited Gardner-Webb University recently through a collaboration with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) in Charlotte, N.C. Paul Yu, a licensed pastor, and Christina Zheng, a preacher and curator of the Ruth Bell Graham Museum in Huai’an city in the central Jiangsu province of Eastern China, participated in the Global Leadership Seminar. Dr. Terry Casiño, Professor of Missiology and Intercultural Studies at the GWU School of Divinity, developed the curriculum for the intensive five-day seminar after being contacted by the project manager of BGEA Chinese Ministries.
The Doctrine Of Justification, Valerie Pors
The Doctrine Of Justification, Valerie Pors
The Kabod
This paper seeks to define and describe the doctrine of justification, and to track the historical origin of the doctrine’s present evangelical understanding. The present-day evangelical understanding of the doctrine of justification is quite complex—integrating many scriptural topics such as righteousness, imputation, faith, grace, forgiveness, works and the Law—an understanding which originated with and developed since Luther’s departure from the traditional Roman Catholic view of justification. The paper analyzes Wayne Grudem’s theory of justification as he developed it in his Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine.

B-2 Philological Problems In Isaiah 6 – An Investigation Of The Dead Sea Scroll Evidence, Rodrigo G. Barbosa
B-2 Philological Problems In Isaiah 6 – An Investigation Of The Dead Sea Scroll Evidence, Rodrigo G. Barbosa
Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship
In this paper, I use Moshe Held-Chaim Cohen’s method to try to establish a preferable reading of Isaiah chapter 6 in light of the Dead Sea Scrolls (DSS). The importance of the DSS for biblical textual criticism has not been rightly appreciated on the aspect that very few commentaries or critical study of a particular biblical text make use of it. So this work try to make the case of the relevance of the DSS textual evidence in order to establish a preferable variant of the Hebrew Bible.

When April Hoelke Simpson (’14) studied Greek and Hebrew, she was fascinated with how the languages enhanced her understanding of the biblical text. Her professors at Gardner-Webb University recognized her scholarly potential even before she did. “I originally planned to become a career missionary and chose mission studies as my concentration,” Simpson shared.

Faculty Publications
This project was part of a larger suite of similar studies being concurrently conducted at fifteen religious studies libraries in US higher education institutions in conjunction with Ithaka S+R, a not-for-profit research and consulting service that helps academic, cultural, and publishing communities. The information gathered in this study will not only be used to improve the research support services at Brigham Young University but also towards writing a larger report from the aggregated results written and publically disseminated by Ithaka S+R.

This study assessed the perceived level of effectiveness of Thoephostic Prayer Minister (TPM) as measured by recipients’ overall and specific ratings of TPM’s impact on their lives, and assessed the validity of concerns that TPM leads to unusually high rates of negative outcomes. Method: Using a cross-sectional design, recipients completed a self-administered survey following their weekly session during one week of data collection at three different geographic locations across the United States. Developing A Strategy To Make Young Adult Disciples In Korean Churches: Focusing On God’S Word In A Discipleship Process, Hyun Park
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
There are many discipleship programs in Korean churches; however, the programs have not had positive effects on young adult for the purpose of developing disciple makers. Discipleship for young adult requires many elements in the process including God’s word, fellowship, training in Christian habits, and spiritual maturity. The purpose of the thesis is to examine Jesus’ and the Apostles’ discipleship processes and to suggest a strategy for making young adult multiply in Korean churches, focusing on God’s words as a discipleship making process. This study will explore discipleship processes of the New Testament and discuss how God’s Word has an …

Mishpachah: The Jewish Family In Tradition And In Transition, Leonard Greenspoon
Mishpachah: The Jewish Family In Tradition And In Transition, Leonard Greenspoon
Studies in Jewish Civilization
Dictionary definitions of the term mishpachah are seemingly straightforward: “A Jewish family or social unit including close and distant relatives—sometimes also close friends.” As accurate as such definitions are, they fail to capture the diversity and vitality of real, flesh-and-blood Jewish families.
Families have been part of Jewish life for as long as there have been Jews. It is useful to recall that the family is the basic narrative building block of the stories in the biblical book of Genesis, which can be interpreted in the light of ancient literary traditions, archaeological discoveries, and rabbinic exegesis. Rabbinic literature also is …

“It’S Not A Fucking Book, It’S A Weapon!”: Authority, Power, And Mediation In The Book Of Eli, Seth M. Walker
Journal of Religion & Film
The mediation of religious narratives through sacred texts is intimately bound to the power relations involved in their transmission and maintenance. Those who possess such mediated messages and control their access and interpretation have historically held privileged positions of authority, especially when those positions are not easily contested. The 2010 film The Book of Eli uniquely engages these elements by placing the alleged last copy of the King James Version of the Christian Bible at the forefront of a clash between different individuals in a post-nuclear wasteland. This paper, drawing on Max Weber’s notion of “charisma,” and scholars addressing religion, …
The Crimes Of Love. The (Un)Censored Version Of The Flood Story In Noah (2014), Wojciech Kosior
The Crimes Of Love. The (Un)Censored Version Of The Flood Story In Noah (2014), Wojciech Kosior
Journal of Religion & Film
A swift survey of Noah reviews clearly shows that the audience’s sensitivity was challenged in several regards; Noah was portrayed as a “religious extremist” and “borderline psychopath”, the Creator proved to be a “distant—unaware or uncaring—overseer”, while Aronofsky himself was said to have a “sinister purpose of leading people to believe that Christianity and Judaism are something they are not.” On closer examination, however, the above summarized pleas are not entirely relevant for two basic reasons. First, the movie consists of ideas that have been in use since antiquity, rearranged and composed into a new-old story and all the arguments …
