Vital Relations And Major Structural Relationships: Heuristic Approaches To Observe And Explore Biblical And Other Discourse, Fredrick J. Long Jan 2017

Vital Relations And Major Structural Relationships: Heuristic Approaches To Observe And Explore Biblical And Other Discourse, Fredrick J. Long

The Journal of Inductive Biblical Studies

In their book, The Way We Think: Conceptual Blending and the Mind’s Hidden Complexities (2002), Gilles Fauconnier and Mark Turner describe within Conceptual Integration Theory (CIT) a set of “vital relations” (VRs) at the core of meaning making that compress and blend ideas simultaneously. “Compression in blending networks operates on a surprisingly small set of relations rooted in fundamental human neurobiology and shared social experience. These vital relations, which include Cause-Effect, Change, Time, Identity, Intentionality, Representation, and Part-Whole, not only apply across mental spaces but also define essential topology within mental spaces” (xiii). Additional VRs include Role, Analogy, Disanalogy, Property, …

The Chiastic Arrangement Of The Lukan Temptation Narrative, Caleb T. Louden Jan 2017

The Chiastic Arrangement Of The Lukan Temptation Narrative, Caleb T. Louden

The Journal of Inductive Biblical Studies

What constitutes a chiasm is a debated area of research and more often neglected within biblical studies. In response to this, Craig Arnold Smith has produced a work that provides new insights into how to determine whether an author intentionally employs a chiasm. Working from Smith’s method, this paper argues that the Lukan temptation in the wilderness narrative is structured as a chiasm. It also demonstrates how the temptation functions to emphasize certain Lukan themes. Furthermore, it demonstrates that the chiasm of Luke 4:1–14a enhances the interpretive significance of the passage by revealing a literary function that has consequences for …

Neo-Subordinationism: The Alien Argumentation In The Gender Debate, Matthew L. Tinkham Jr. Jan 2017

Neo-Subordinationism: The Alien Argumentation In The Gender Debate, Matthew L. Tinkham Jr.

Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)

Over the last forty years, the debate over gender roles in the home, church, and society has escalated in an unprecedented way among evangelical Christians due to the introduction of an alien argumentation that grounds the permanent, functional subordination of women to men in the being of God. This argumentation—which is termed “neo-subordinationism” in this article—states that there is a prescriptive hierarchical ordering of the immanent Trinity that is recognizable through the economic Trinity. In this Trinitarian hierarchy, the Son and the Holy Spirit are said to be ontologically equal but eternally subordinated in role and authority to the Father, …

“Man, Don’T Feel Like A Woman”: Christian Scriptural Interpretations, The Binary Gender System, And How They Can Lead To Misogyny And Homophobia, Alyssa Froehling Jan 2017

“Man, Don’T Feel Like A Woman”: Christian Scriptural Interpretations, The Binary Gender System, And How They Can Lead To Misogyny And Homophobia, Alyssa Froehling

Audre Lorde Prize

This paper utilizes different analyses of scripture to argue that a binary gender system is not inherent in Christianity. Contemporary societal norms placed onto Christianity contribute to the oppression of women and those in LGBTQ+ communities.

Bible As Interface, Michael Paul Hemenway Jan 2017

Bible As Interface, Michael Paul Hemenway

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The book is undergoing a major technological transition as print wanes in its dominance and the internet and mobile devices transform our reading and writing technologies. With the entangled histories of bible and book, our emerging technological age and its transformation of the materiality of bible forces us to engage bible as something irreducible to a book. The connections between the major technological transition from roll to codex in antiquity and the contemporary move toward the internet and mobile technologies as reading platforms encourage us to consider bible as an interface that affords high surface area, collaboration, and anarchy. Building …

Death As Sleep: The (Mis)Use Of A Biblical Metaphor, William Paroschi Jan 2017

Death As Sleep: The (Mis)Use Of A Biblical Metaphor, William Paroschi

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

"The SDA view on what happens at death has been sometimes misunderstood; first, because the way we ourselves have occasionally used the sleep metaphor to describe death and, second, as a result of the dualistic connotation traditionally associated with soul-sleep. It could be argued that this comes from a reading of Adventist literature unmindful of the larger context of biblical anthropology in which these statements are made. This, however, is no excuse for not making every effort to express our understanding of the subject as clearly and completely as possible. Sleep is not a description of the nature of death. …

The Adventist Pilgrim: A Construct For Theological Reflection, Erik C. Carter Jan 2017

The Adventist Pilgrim: A Construct For Theological Reflection, Erik C. Carter

Journal of the Adventist Theological Society

"Adventist historians and tour guides refer to site visits using words like “living experience,” “spiritual reflection,” and “sacred space,” but these terms are not adequately engaged, thus rendering them abstract and relegating them to the background. Michael Campbell suggests, for example, that those who participate in an Adventist historical site visit are “personally confronted with the reality of God’s continued leading.” But what exactly does this mean, and perhaps more importantly, how does it happen? We need a more systematic way of connecting these places with our own experience, laden with personal meaning. The purpose of this brief study is …
