“These Are Our Saints:” A Lourdes Shrine, The St. Coletta School For Exceptional Children, And The Catholic Remaking Of Cognitive Disability, Andrew Walker-Cornetta

Religion

This chapter appears from the book American Patroness: Marian Shrines and the Making of US Catholicism by Katherine Dugan and Karen E. Park, Editors.

"'These Are Our Saints:' A Lourdes Shrine, the St. Coletta School for Exceptional Children, and the Catholic Remaking of Cognitive Disability" focuses on a Lourdes shrine on the campus of what was once perhaps the most celebrated institution in the United States for persons with cognitive disabilities. It takes this site as a window onto mid-twentieth century Catholic efforts to re-imagine cognitive difference and highlights the importance of Marian devotional grammars to those efforts.

Reading The Bible To Meet Jesus: Demonstration Of The Apostolic Preaching, Irenaeus Of Lyons, Gregory S. Magee

Sacred Roots Spiritual Classics

Reading the Bible to Meet Jesus, part of the Sacred Roots Spiritual Classics series, is a refreshed English version and study guide for the ancient work Demonstration of the Apostolic Preaching, written by early church leader Irenaeus of Lyons. Irenaeus captures a sense of the epic scope of God’s plans being worked out in history, culminating in the ministry of Jesus Christ. Irenaeus interacts deeply with Scripture to show how this grand story of God’s activity and presence is demonstrated throughout the Bible. The study guide materials include introductions and discussion questions for each chapter. The questions promote exploration of …

Who Is The "Son Of Man"?, Kerry Irish Jan 2024

Who Is The "Son Of Man"?, Kerry Irish

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

Many people, perhaps most, find Jesus’s use of this title confusing. It seems vague, even evasive. Not long before His death, a group of Jews implored Him “If You are the Christ [Messiah] tell us plainly [John 10:24].” Jesus responded, “I told you, but you do not believe.” As we shall see, Jesus spoke the truth as a brief study of both the Old and New Testaments makes clear. Indeed, many Old Testament writers use the title. That being the case, what does Jesus intend by describing Himself as the “Son of Man”? And why was He not well understood …

A Narrative Analysis Of Gensis 15, Patrick Russell Jan 2024

A Narrative Analysis Of Gensis 15, Patrick Russell

Obsculta

This paper seeks to read Genesis 15 through a narrative lens. While historical critical method provides some framework, the main purpose is to read this text as a work of literature: a story told to an audience to convey something of shared importance. What theological insights a reader gains from this literary approach may be different from that which one sees when analyzing the text with a more tradition lens.

Junia The Apostle: History And Future Of Women In The Church, Hannah Miers Jan 2024

Junia The Apostle: History And Future Of Women In The Church, Hannah Miers

Obsculta

The piece sheds light on the identity of the individual mentioned as Junia in Paul's writings to the Romans. Numerous sources, spanning from the Patristics to contemporary academia, shed further insight into her life and character. The more significant question for our times becomes why Junia is less well-known and how she exemplifies a change (though slow) in the Roman Catholic Church's perspective on women.

This reflection was given by Kathleen Cahalan—Professor of Practical Theology—in November of 2023 and explores the role of hope in the life of the Christian disciple.

The Importance Of Luke 3, Patrick Russell Jan 2024

The Importance Of Luke 3, Patrick Russell

Obsculta

This paper attempts to show the literary and theological significance of the genealogy in Luke 3. Though the text can be read as merely something to convey facts; the textual placement and the theological themes at work within the genealogy in relation to Luke-Acts are not arbitrary. In light of the overall use of genealogies in the ancient near east this pericope becomes something far more dynamic than it might otherwise seem upon first glance.

Paul And Gender: Early Reception And Modern Implications, Phoebe Carstens Jan 2024

Paul And Gender: Early Reception And Modern Implications, Phoebe Carstens

Obsculta

Within Paul’s letters, there is a wealth of theological and ministerial material with a variety of implications and interpretations—what Paul seems to say about the position of women in the Church is the object of much debate. This piece highlights the ways in which Paul displays an openness to greater involvement of women in the Christian movement and a breaking of traditional female gender roles, yet simultaneously upholds rigid boundaries of marked gender distinction, thus mirroring a current stance of the Church today.

Μαλακοί And ΆρσενοκοῖΤαι In 1 Corinthians 6:9-10: Reception History And Its Applicability To Modern Homosexuality, Taylor Patz Jan 2024

Μαλακοί And ΆρσενοκοῖΤαι In 1 Corinthians 6:9-10: Reception History And Its Applicability To Modern Homosexuality, Taylor Patz

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is arguing that μαλακοί and ἀρσενοκοῖται in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 should not have a place in the formation of modern Christian theological stances on homosexuality because neither μαλακοί nor ἀρσενοκοῖται conceptually align with modern homosexuality. Chapters one through four cover background context on Jewish, Greek, and Roman views of sexuality. This background information is to provide context, based on the literary evidence we have today, on what Paul could have conceptually intended by μαλακοί and ἀρσενοκοῖται. The second part to this thesis, chapters five through seven, look at the reception history of 1 Corinthians 6:9 from Latin to …

Re-Examining What I Have Been Taught About Ruth And Naomi As An Asian And Asian American Woman: A Re-Reading Of Ruth Through A Postcolonial Womanist Lens That Calls Asian And Asian American Christians To The Ministry Of Reconciliation And Biblical Justice, Eunice Lin-Sawyer Jan 2024

Re-Examining What I Have Been Taught About Ruth And Naomi As An Asian And Asian American Woman: A Re-Reading Of Ruth Through A Postcolonial Womanist Lens That Calls Asian And Asian American Christians To The Ministry Of Reconciliation And Biblical Justice, Eunice Lin-Sawyer

Seattle Pacific Seminary Theses

As a Singaporean Chinese woman who only moved to America in middle adulthood, I discovered that one’s context(s) and the particularities of place and positionality significantly shape one’s reading and interpretation of Scripture. This thesis engages in a transnational reading of portions of the Ruth Narrative (RN) and exposes the hidden normativity of Whiteness and Eurocentric theology that has shaped how Ruth is interpreted within the Asian and Asian American Evangelical Church. It also explores the implications of taking seriously one’s social-religious contexts and developing a lived theology that accounts for one’s personal narratives, life experiences and embodied particularity. King Benjamin’S Sermon As A Type Of Temple Endowment, Andrew I. Miller Jan 2024

King Benjamin’S Sermon As A Type Of Temple Endowment, Andrew I. Miller

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

To more permanently unify the Mulekites and the Nephites as a reunited kingdom of Israel, King Benjamin gathered his people at the temple, and in his role as a king and priest after the order of Melchizedek, imparted teachings that bear resemblance to the Latter- day Saint temple endowment ceremony first introduced in Nauvoo. Several of these similarities are explored in depth. Since the book of Mosiah is one of the earliest extant texts of Joseph Smith’s prophetic ministry, this finding adds to a growing body of literature that suggests that temple themes are apparent in the unfolding Restoration earlier …

The Groaning Of God: Jesus’ Sighs In Mark 7:34 And 8:12, Rachel L. Coleman Jan 2024

The Groaning Of God: Jesus’ Sighs In Mark 7:34 And 8:12, Rachel L. Coleman

The Asbury Journal

Mark’s use of sighing/groaning language ([ἀνα-]στενάζω) in 7:34 and 8:12, when set alongside the LXX and other NT use of the terms, provides a powerful glimpse of the mystery of the Incarnation, as the Son of Man groans in solidarity with humanity and creation and the Son of God groans in concert with the Father and the Spirit in the eschatological work of liberation, healing, and restoration.

“Exiles, Aliens, And Strangers”: Reading And Living In The Company Of The Global Church, Rachel L. Coleman Jan 2024

“Exiles, Aliens, And Strangers”: Reading And Living In The Company Of The Global Church, Rachel L. Coleman

The Asbury Journal

The use of “exile, alien, and stranger” language by New Testament writers in their descriptions of the church provides important insights into the appropriate self-understanding (identity) and the ultimate allegiance of Jesus’ followers. The lived experience of North Atlantic believers can make it hard to hear and internalize this apostolic language for the church; reading in the company of Majority World Christians can open up the possibility of deeper understanding and embodiment of these realities.
