Defying Death: Abraham And Moses In Jewish Antiquity, David J. Zucker Jan 2025

Defying Death: Abraham And Moses In Jewish Antiquity, David J. Zucker

The Asbury Journal

Although all who live will die, Abraham, in the pseudepigraphic work the Testament of Abraham; and then Moses in numerous midrashic/ Talmudic sources, seeks to defy and deny the date of his death, at least for a period of time, each one saying in effect, “Yes, but not yet.” These texts are described and compared, reflecting on how each face death from within the Jewish tradition.

The Fear Of God: The Foundation Of The Divine Covenants Through The Blood Sacrifice And Meal Of Exodus 24:4–11 And 1 Corinthians 11:23–32., Matthew Taylor Propst

College of Theology and Ministry Dissertations, Projects, & Theses

The Fear of God and its relevance to establishing the Old Covenant and the New Covenant is vital in understanding the nature of the role of sacrificial blood and meal in Exodus and 1 Corinthians. The Fear of God acts to establish and maintain proper covenantal relations with God and a covenant community’s cohesion. There is also an element where those that participate in covenants are required to live under its commandments by self-sacrificial behavior.

Chapter 1 introduces the issue of this thesis within certain parameters and boundaries alongside the purpose and objectives this issue wishes to address. Chapter 2 …

Charles Wesley And The Jews, Nicholas M. Railton Jan 2025

Charles Wesley And The Jews, Nicholas M. Railton

The Asbury Journal

This article focuses on Charles Wesley, the poet of Methodism, and his attitude to Jews. Wesley’s eschatology was shaped by, among other influences, his natural father and his spiritual mentor, Vincent Perronet. His understanding of biblical prophecy was expressed most clearly in some hymns he wrote for the early Methodists. The hymns speaking of the return of the Jewish nation to the Holy Land have largely fallen into abeyance. A satirical drawing produced during the anti-Jewish protests of 1753 featuring Charles Wesley is discussed. Given the hostility against the existence and policies of the one Jewish state in the world, …

“Behold, I Went To Hunt Beasts In The Forest”: An Addendum On Enos, Esau, And The Symbolic Geography Of Seir, Matthew L. Bowen Jan 2025

“Behold, I Went To Hunt Beasts In The Forest”: An Addendum On Enos, Esau, And The Symbolic Geography Of Seir, Matthew L. Bowen

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Enos’s use of the onomastic wordplay in the Jacob and Esau cycle enables him to meaningfully allude to the symbolic geography of those stories and incorporate it into his New World setting (e.g., allusions to the river Jabbok and Peniel/Penuel, the site of Jacob’s “wrestle” with the divine “man”). A third instance of this type of allusion occurs with Enos’s recollection that he “went to hunt beasts in the forest[s]” (Enos 1:3), which appears to subtly allude to Mount Seir, the forested hill country in the land of Edom inhabited by Esau and his descendants.

A Sapiential Maxim On Forgiveness In Proverbs 17:9, Mary Jerome Obiorah Ihm Jan 2025

A Sapiential Maxim On Forgiveness In Proverbs 17:9, Mary Jerome Obiorah Ihm

Obsculta

Christian discussion on forgiveness often begins from its theological dimension. This essay argues that an anthropological setting of this inevitable human reality will benefit Christians and non-Christians. We are social beings and we are continually interacting with others in order to sustain our innate social character. Our social circle diminishes if we fail to forgive and avoid our offenders. Proverbs 17:9, which is studied in this paper, persuasively teaches the anthropological reason to forgive others their offences. It is discovered that Christian dialectics on forgiveness is both vertical and horizontal, and the two dimensions are inseparable.

Chatgpt And Biblical Studies, James F. Mcgrath Jan 2025

Chatgpt And Biblical Studies, James F. Mcgrath

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The use of computers in the study of theology has a long and positive history, yet the level of concern in response to the latest AI chatbots is understandable. This article explores how education and preaching need to adapt to this new technology and what its limitations are, as well as how it may make a positive contribution. The study concludes with a brief exploration of the kinds of sermon materials GPTs produced for the author when given prompts about the story of the Samaritan woman in John 4.

Digital Identity Infrastructure, Jonathan Evan Hochman Jan 2025

Digital Identity Infrastructure, Jonathan Evan Hochman

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation proposes a uniform infrastructure for identifying users and data on the Internet. It identifies the questions we need to ask, provides terminology to think and speak about digital identity, introduces new cryptographic primitives to support digital identity services, and finally presents a sequence of applications that could be built upon the foundation of a shared digital identity infrastructure. These solution sketches are not meant as final specifications. They are examples to demonstrate how digital identity infrastructure could make it easier for digital platforms to deploy new services, improve privacy, reduce user frustration, and support the rule of law …

Barriers To Spiritual Growth, Brian A. Brunke Jan 2025

Barriers To Spiritual Growth, Brian A. Brunke

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examined the barriers to spiritual growth among believers, analyzing biblical and theological sources alongside perspectives from additional literature. The study identified significant obstacles to spiritual development, including persecution, cultural and religious differences, conflict, lack of understanding, and worldly influences, as illustrated in the Book of Acts. Furthermore, modern challenges, such as the implications of neuroscience for spiritual formation, lifestyle choices, and cultural shifts, also contribute to these barriers. A quantitative approach was employed, utilizing an online survey to assess spiritual growth across six dimensions: commitment to God, evangelism, engagement in spiritual disciplines, pursuit of intentional relationships, stewardship, and …

The Death And Afterlife Of The Coptic Language In Mamluk Egypt., Ramona Teepe Jan 2025

The Death And Afterlife Of The Coptic Language In Mamluk Egypt., Ramona Teepe

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

My dissertation, The Death and Afterlife of the Coptic Language in Mamluk Egypt, argues that although Coptic “died” out as a spoken language in the thirteenth century, Coptic intellectuals purposefully developed a way to teach Coptic as a classical language and thus set the course for its survival as a liturgical language until today.

The Arab conquest of Egypt in 642 CE conventionally marks the end of the period which Coptic studies covers. After the conquest, Arabic slowly superseded Coptic as a language of politics, administration, and finally (roughly by the end of the twelfth century) of everyday life. …
