Invisible Strangers, Or Romani History Reconsidered, Kristina Richardson Oct 2020

Invisible Strangers, Or Romani History Reconsidered, Kristina Richardson

Publications and Research

This essay proposes that the invisibility of so-called Gypsies in Middle Eastern and Central Asian historiography derives from two linked phenomena. First, the work of nineteenth- and twentieth-century European and North American philologists, medievalists, and ethnographers delegitimized the Strangers’ languages, along with the cultures and histories that these languages expressed. The erasure of Strangers from modern historiography was nearly total. Secondly, the category of Strangers was transformed in the wake of the Holocaust as Roma activists drew on Nazi racial categories to base Roma identity on linguistic criteria.

A Critical Analysis Of Dower (Mahr) In Theory And Practice In British India Through Court Records From 1800 To 1939, Sunil Tirkey

Theses and Dissertations

The colonial court records between 1800 to 1939 in India show the existence of excessive dower, which were usually paid at the dissolution of marriage to discourage divorce. Supporting this view of excessive dower as a useful device, Mitra Sharafi argues that inflated dower and divorce law protected Muslim women against instant divorce, making it too expensive for husbands to use it. Further, according to her, British judges enhanced women's rights to dower and divorce by pronouncing rulings in favour of a high amount of dower to protect the women against the one-sided authority of men to divorce. Contrary to …

Rewriting The Oeuvre: Raymond Queneau And The Art Of Translation, Christopher Clarke Sep 2020

Rewriting The Oeuvre: Raymond Queneau And The Art Of Translation, Christopher Clarke

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

While the literary oeuvre of French author Raymond Queneau (1903-1976) has been extensively studied, his work as a literary translator has been largely overlooked. Queneau was a prominent member of the French literary avant-garde, but also a literary translator for two decades (1934-1953), and his writing was greatly influenced and impacted by his readings and translations of Anglophone writers. This dissertation provides insight into the role of translation in his conception of writing and language, and the inseparability of the different facets of his career as a writer, literary translator, and publisher. I examine his personal linguistic and literary history …

Writing The Body As Subversion In Alexandra Chreiteh’S Always Coca-Cola, Luma Balaa Aug 2020

Writing The Body As Subversion In Alexandra Chreiteh’S Always Coca-Cola, Luma Balaa

Journal of International Women's Studies

Women in Always Coca-Cola are oppressed by multiple intersectional forces of oppression, such as patriarchy, the male gaze, colonialism, and the beauty myth. Although some women in the novella are caught in a state in between rebellion and conformism, Always Coca-Cola largely subverts patriarchy. By the end of the novella, the female protagonist is able to break free from some of her chains of oppression. Through a close textual analysis, this paper draws on many theories such as the “male gaze,” Hélène Cixous’s “writing the body,” and Naomi Wolf’s “the beauty myth” to argue that Alexandra Chreiteh’s Always Coca-Cola attempts …

"I'M Stamped A Liar On My Heart": Challenges Of Qualitative Research On Arab And Arab-American Drug User Populations, Amny M. Shuraydi

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

In the social sciences, Arabs and Arab-Americans are an understudied population. While there are numerous contributing factors as to why this disparity in the literature exists, one of the main contributing factors when studying Arab populations is that of access. In quantitative data, those of Arab descent are often misclassified or grouped into broader categories such as “White,” “Middle-Eastern,” or “Muslim.” This can lead to data that either seem limiting or misleading. In qualitative research, cultural factors such as shame, stigma, fear of judgment, and a culture of honor can lead to blocked access to offender populations. This article will …

Islam And The Muslims In The Anglo-American Literary Tradition: The Historical Roots And The Reiterations, Marwan Obeidat, Ibrahim Mumayiz

Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب

The relationship between Islam and the West was first troubled by biblical texts

pejorative of the Arabs, and the rise of Islam in the seventh century aggravated this

negative view of Arabs and Muslims. Although the brilliant Muslim civilization in Spain

mitigated this negative image, Western fears of Europe’s Latin Christianity being caught

by the pincer of Muslim Spain in the West and Levantine Islam from the East gave rise

to the Crusades that sought to drive a wedge between the two flanks of Islam by seizing

the Holy Land and thereby neutralizing the Islamic threat. The Crusades, virulent
