A Study In Computerized Translation Testing (Ctt) For The Arabic Language, Amanda J. Kuhn
Theses and Dissertations
Translation quality assessment remains pertinent in both translation theory and in the industry. Specifically, the process of assessing a target document's quality or a person's translation competence involves a lot of time and money on the part of various governments, organizations and individuals. In response to this issue, this project builds on the ongoing research of Hague et al. (2012), who seek to determine the capabilities of a computerized translation test for the French-to-English and Spanish-to-English language pairs. Specifically, Hague et al. (2012) question whether a good score on a detect-and-correct style computerized translation test that is calculated by a …

The Ibāḍī Traders Of Bilād Al-Sūdān, Jason Van Riel
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis deals with the trans-Saharan commercial links between the Maghreb and Bilād al-Sūdān from the 1st till 5th century AH, and the role the Ibāḍī Traders « community played in establishing these links. Ibāḍī Traders of Bilād al-Sūdān« merchants monopolized the trans-Saharan trade due to their alliances with local Berber tribes and their predisposition to trade, dating from their inception history in Basra. Missionary efforts by Ibāḍī Traders « traders to Bilād al-Sūdān led to the introduction of Islam in Bilād al-Sūdān, as well as the introduction of other Islamic traditions and customs. Both religion and trade where of …

The Legal Methodology Of The Salafi Movement In Egypt, Brian Wright
The Legal Methodology Of The Salafi Movement In Egypt, Brian Wright

This study derives the legal methodology of the modern Salafi movement in Egypt. The first two sections develop context, pondering global Salafism as well as the effects of the Egyptian political, economic, and cultural spheres on the movement's development, while the third section discusses the legal opinions of Salafi preachers in the fields of democracy, law, economics, women's rights, non-Muslims, Al Azhar, the Shi'a, as well as the arts and leisure. Section four synthesizes these opinions to create the general approach of the movement to Islamic Law. This study suggests that each manifestation of Salafism is the result of local …
Islamophobia In Contemporary America, Matthew Bryce Miller
Islamophobia In Contemporary America, Matthew Bryce Miller
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Before beginning, it is critical that I establish the scope of this thesis. In an attempt to make this thesis as rewarding and substantive as possible, I have attempted to narrowly construct boundaries for my writing by asking two primary research questions: How and why does Islamophobia manifest in contemporary America? It should be noted that the "How" is the primary focus of this work, while the "Why" is more of a supplementary addition. This was purposefully done because of the sheer magnitude and more objective nature of the first section. I am hesitant to devote too much time or …

Gender Discourse In Kitab Al-Tabaqat Al-Kubra: Deconstructing Ibn Sa'd'S Portrayal Of The Model Muslim Woman, Amira Naim Abou-Taleb
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the impact of Ibn Saʽd’s (d. 230/845) historical context on his portrayal of the women of the Prohetic household in Kitab al-Tabaqat al-Kubra (KTK). The KTK stands as the oldest, extant version of a biographical dictionary of the early Muslim community and has been canonized as an authority on the lives of individuals who are perceived as the exemplary model (al-salaf al-ṣaliḥ) for later Muslims generations. As critical historiography suggests a strong link between a historical narrative and the socio-political context in which it was created, the two hundred year gap between the time of authorship of …
"Fayyumi Ware": Variations, Imitations, And Importation Of An Early Islamic Glazed Ceramic Type, Gregory Williams
"Fayyumi Ware": Variations, Imitations, And Importation Of An Early Islamic Glazed Ceramic Type, Gregory Williams
Theses and Dissertations
A number of recent publications have shown that a small amount of Egyptian glazed table wares were imported throughout Palestine from the early centuries of Islam onwards. One of the oft-forgotten and least classifiable types is the problematically titled ‘Fayyumi’ ware, so-called for its supposed provenance in the Fayyum. ‘Fayyumi’ pottery was actually manufactured in Fustat (Old Cairo) and a reexamination of its many variations shows it was both influenced by Chinese-inspired Iraqi white wares and Coptic pottery traditions already extant in Egypt, warranting changes to both its name and variety of definitions. One of the issues which has plagued …
Revival Of Mamluk Architecture In The 19th & 20th Centuries, Laila Kamal Marei
Revival Of Mamluk Architecture In The 19th & 20th Centuries, Laila Kamal Marei
Theses and Dissertations
Mamluk Architecture was renowned for its grandeur. It had characteristic features that distinguished it from other styles and added to its unquestioned beauty. Cairo saw a revival of the Mamluk style in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century at the hands of renowned European architects such as Antoine Lasciac and Mario Rossi, in addition to European-educated Egyptian architectures, most notably Mustafa Fahmi. During the reign of Khedive Ismaâ il, Egypt witnessed a strong wave of European-influenced buildings, at the same time that the Mamluk style was being revived. The revived style was used in many buildings, not only religious …
