"Many A Wish Has Turned To Dust" The Royal Aq Quyunlu Khamsa Of Nizami, Dalia R. Al Nashar

Theses and Dissertations

…[A]nd our reason for relating this narrative is as follows. Before now the late padishah Babur Mirza intended to complete this eloquent book, which is attributed to the “Treasure of Ganja,” scatterer of riches from the treasure house of the Khamsa, Sultan of Poets Nizami, and commanded Azhar, who was one of the rarities of his age in calligraphy, to copy it. Not yet had [Babur Mirza] plucked the rose of desire from the garden of completion when the barren wind of autumn of fate left not a leaf on the tree of his life. Thereafter, Pir-Budaq Mirza was seized …

The Innovations In The Ottoman Legal Administration:The 16th Century Between Theory And Practice, Honey El-Moghazi

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to bring to light some of the most formative innovations in the Ottoman legal administration that unfolded by the 16th Century. It serves to macroscopically trace back some of the major developments that led to the crystallization of the Ottoman legal system and the state's administration of justice. This study thus aims to demonstrate the process of the making of Ottoman law through the early attempts of codifying a comprehensive legal code together with the creation of a unique form of "Ottoman Hanafism". Furthermore, it aims to examine the role of some of the …

From Text To Screenplay (Gendering The Nation In Mariam Naoum's Literary Adaptations), May Serhan

Theses and Dissertations

Mariam Naoum's literary adaptations to television in the aftermath of the 2011 Egyptian uprising have carried wide cultural, political and literary implications, especially where the "woman question" is concerned. With Islamism and militarism both threatening to exclude a wide sector of women from the historical narrative of the uprising and the subsequent nation-building process, and with a male-dominated literary establishment that systematically relegates women to secondary roles, Naoum's writing re-affirmed gendered agency both on the level of social engagement and authorship. Chapter one of the thesis provides the theoretical framework and historical backdrop necessary for understanding how female writing can …

Cultural Vibrations: Measuring The Dominant Creative Class In Times Of Conflict: West Jerusalem 2014 To 2016, A Case Study, Ellie Neustein Jan 2018

Cultural Vibrations: Measuring The Dominant Creative Class In Times Of Conflict: West Jerusalem 2014 To 2016, A Case Study, Ellie Neustein

Honors Thesis Collection

When walking in Jerusalem one cannot help but notice the presence of political and religious street art. Slogans, portraits of political and religious figures, ironic political statements, and religious symbols are spray painted, hung, or plastered in public view. At first glance the city seems to be peppered with political expression originating from authentic roots of civil society- the artisan social commentators. However, upon reflection, one comes to notice that much of the paint is chipped, and the political commentary is no longer relevant to contemporary issues. It is puzzling that a population having just achieved renewed dominant status in …

Elements Of Expatriate Adjustment In Host Country Organizations, Denise Suzanne Schickel Jan 2018

Elements Of Expatriate Adjustment In Host Country Organizations, Denise Suzanne Schickel

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Globalization and international business increasingly require the services of skilled expatriates in overseas offices. Over the past 50 years, numerous studies have focused on various factors affecting expatriate adjustment, primarily through quantitative research, reaching no conclusions on what factors in cross-cultural training would guarantee expatriate success. Expatriate failure has high personal and organizational costs. The purpose of this study was to use the qualitative methodology of narrative inquiry to investigate the adjustment, transition, and repatriation experience as a holistic process. Two theoretical constructions, Bandura's social learning theory, applied to the learning process in an international assignment, and social identity theory, …

Anxiety: Stress, Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety, And Enjoyment During Study Abroad In Amman, Jordan, Dan Dewey, R. Kirk Belnap, Patrick Steffen

Faculty Publications

Anxiety is among the most frequently studied emotions in second language acquisition (SLA). Study abroad (SA) researchers have examined its effects on SLA in that setting in a number of studies. The current study goes beyond previous SA research by examining how anxiety develops and connects with language proficiency development over SA. Specifically, it uses anxiety-related measures of foreign language classroom anxiety (FLCA), foreign language enjoyment (FLE), and a physiological manifestation of anxiety (hair cortisol). As far as the classroom is concerned, learners grew more comfortable, experiencing less anxiety and more enjoyment over the period of SA. However, learners showed …

Media Narratives Of Gender In The Contentious Conservative Age Of Trump, Pam Creedon Jan 2018

Media Narratives Of Gender In The Contentious Conservative Age Of Trump, Pam Creedon

All Works

© 2018 Taylor & Francis. Trump’s (s)election 1 has reinvigorated feminism around the globe. He has ignited the fourth wave of feminism - a “rebirth” of the movement for equality, gender equity, and the abolishment of discrimination. 2 Jodi Enda, assistant managing editor for special projects at CNN Politics, described Trump’s election as both the best and worst time for the future of feminism: The election of a president whom detractors view as misogynistic and backward-thinking has done nothing less than spark a wholesale resurgence of feminism. His defeat of the first woman who might have been president - coupled …

Commerce, Religion, And The Rule Of Law, Nathan B. Oman Jan 2018

Commerce, Religion, And The Rule Of Law, Nathan B. Oman

Faculty Publications

The rule of law and religion can act as commercial substitutes. Both can create the trust required for material prosperity. The rule of law simplifies social interactions, turning people into formal legal agents and generating a map of society that the state can observe and control, thus credibly committing to the enforcement of the legal rights demanded by impersonal markets. Religion, in contrast, embraces complex social identities. Within these communities, economic actors can monitor and sanction misbehavior. Both approaches have benefits and problems. The rule of law allows for trade among strangers, fostering peaceful pluralism. However, law breeds what Montesquieu …

Rolling With Pda And Dda: How Academic Libraries Can Use Patron-Driven And Demand-Driven Acquisition Techniques To Build Library Collections With Minimal Management And Budget, Kerry A. Falloon

Charleston Library Conference

Patron-driven and demand-driven acquisitions (PDA/DDA) have been utilized for some time in academic libraries, but some university libraries are still new to the process. With changes in the last couple of years regarding shortterm monograph loans becoming cost ineffective, the popularity of streaming video PDA, and library materials budgets increasingly being cut, the conundrum of successfully implementing a DDA/PDA program and how to evaluate its effectiveness is a question many libraries need to answer. In the fall of 2015, the College of Staten Island Library-CUNY, implemented a small DDA monograph pilot program with Yankee Book Peddler (YBP) and EBSCOhost e-books …

Manual, a journal about art and its making. Out of Line. The nineth issue. This issue of *Manual*—themed Out of Line—is a collection about the way that lines disrupt, point outward. In poetry, the attention to detail one takes in crafting a line is all about making the line disappear, making something it holds to take front stage. . . . The space between the lines creating the image . . . the space around that argues for the importance of all that the lines hold. Aspect Comprehension And Processing In Narratives By Native Spanish Speakers, Hannah Riddle Oct 2017

Aspect Comprehension And Processing In Narratives By Native Spanish Speakers, Hannah Riddle

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

Aspect is fundamental to expressing time and sequence of events in narratives. In second language acquisition literature little is known about how English aspect is comprehended. This study manipulates aspect in narratives and compares comprehension of Spanish speakers to English and Arabic speakers. English and Spanish have morphosyntactic aspect, Arabic does not. This study examines aspect comprehension in 18 native Spanish speakers, using 16 narratives to capture moment-to-moment and off-line processing. Results show that Spanish speakers comprehend aspect more like English speakers in the moment-to-moment processing, where Arabic speakers do not. Spanish speakers did not comprehend aspect like English speakers …

Bridging The Gap From Policy To Practice: Diabetes In Rural Morocco, Zoe H. Robbin Oct 2017

Bridging The Gap From Policy To Practice: Diabetes In Rural Morocco, Zoe H. Robbin

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Morocco is in the midst of an epidemiologic transition ushered in by reduced fertility rates and extended life expectancy. Unlike two decades ago, today’s leading cause of death is chronic disease. In 2006, Moroccan officials launched Vision 2020, a comprehensive plan that seeks to expand access to healthcare and reign back the prevalence of noncommunicable disease, among other goals related to development. Through qualitative interviews with the residents of Tarmilat and Oulmes, a rural community south of Khamissat, this paper represents the first assessment of Vision 2020’s performance thus far to combat the spread of type 2 diabetes among rural …

Historiographical Perspectives Of The Third Reich: Nazi Policies Towards The Arab World And European Muslims, Jesus Montemayor Oct 2017

Historiographical Perspectives Of The Third Reich: Nazi Policies Towards The Arab World And European Muslims, Jesus Montemayor

History Faculty Publications

This historiographical essay examines major works on the interaction of Nazi Germany and the Arab World in general and the European Muslims in particular. The essay argues that despite the claims of revisionist studies that emerged after 9/11 terrorists attacks, the Nazi influence among the Arab and European Muslims was not deep enough to produce sufficient Muslim and Arab support for the Nazi cause.

How Muslims Understand Democracy: An Empirical Investigation, Shireen Alazzaw, Moamen Gouda Sep 2017

How Muslims Understand Democracy: An Empirical Investigation, Shireen Alazzaw, Moamen Gouda

Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies

This study examines how Muslims understand democracy and its essential components. We hypothesize that, although Muslims tend to value democracy as high as non-Muslims, Muslims have a unique understanding of procedural, as well as substantive, components of democracy, that stems from both their historical, and current, socioeconomic experiences. Employing the latest data from World Values Survey, our descriptive statistics suggest that while Muslims highly value democracy, and believe they don’t have enough of it, their notion of democracy is distinct from that of non-Muslims. Muslims tend to associate democracy with its perceived outcomes, and do not have a substantial reservation …

Contentious Politics In The Arab Middle East: Jordanian Salafism And The Social Appropriation Of Tradition, Massimo Ramaioli Aug 2017

Contentious Politics In The Arab Middle East: Jordanian Salafism And The Social Appropriation Of Tradition, Massimo Ramaioli

Dissertations - ALL

In which ways do intellectuals affect social and political mobilization? How do they impact the trajectory of contention – the kind of mobilization and its developments - through their ideological work? Prominent intellectuals seem to play a relevant role in contentious politics, yet this role is still undertheorized. In this project, I analyze this question in the context of contemporary Arab Salafism, a particularly literal interpretation of Sunni Islam. I seek to unpack the processes by which prominent Islamist intellectuals impact and shape two Salafi currents originating and operating across Jordan during the 1990s and beyond. The first current is …

Arab Islamic Scholars: Contributions Lost, Khawlah Ahmed

Journal of Arts and Social Sciences

Arab Islamic scholars have played a major role in the development of science and knowledge and have produced work that has been regarded by many as the catalyst for the enlightenment of the world. They have set foundations and were responsible for many scientific breakthroughs. Yet contemporary history books and academic curriculums neglected these contributions and the role they played. This paper presents research evidence that documents some of these contributions and initiates the argument that there is a need to present such work, connect the past to the present by presenting what seems to have been lost along the …
