Cracking Silent Codes: Critical Race Theory And Education Organizing, Celina Su
Cracking Silent Codes: Critical Race Theory And Education Organizing, Celina Su
Publications and Research
Critical race theory (CRT) has moved beyond legal scholarship to critique the ways in which “colorblind” laws and policies perpetuate existing racial inequalities in education policy. While criticisms of CRT have focused on the pessimism and lack of remedies presented, CRT scholars have begun to address issues of praxis. Specifically, communities of color must challenge the dominant narratives of mainstream institutions with alternative visions of pedagogy and school reform, and community organizing plays an important role in helping communities of color to articulate these alternative counter-narratives. Yet, many in education organizing disagree with CRT's critique of colorblindness. Drawing on five …

Making The Case For Global Engineering: Building Foreign Language Collaborations For Designing, Implementing, And Assessing Programs , Beate I. Allert, Dianne L. Atkinson, Eckhard A. Groll, E. Dan Hirleman
Online Journal for Global Engineering Education
Engineering programs must prepare students for a global engineering profession. In global markets, processes as well as products can be outsourced. Highly technical engineering work may be completed by large and diverse collaborations. Engineering students need to have foundational work in languages, cultural differences, and strategies for working with diverse colleagues. Historically only about 3% to 4% of engineering students pursue study abroad opportunities. Clearly, new and innovative programs must be devised to build "global competency" in undergraduate engineers. In working toward that end, the authors suggest that interdisciplinary collaborations between departments of foreign language and schools of engineering can …

The Human Dimensions Of Land Change In Lamjung District Of Nepal, Milan Shrestha
The Human Dimensions Of Land Change In Lamjung District Of Nepal, Milan Shrestha
Himalayan Policy Research Conference
Among land-change scientists, there is a growing recognition of the need for an integrative multilevel approach to study the relationships of agricultural ‘modification activities’ with global land-use and land-cover change (LUCC) (Moran 2005; Walsh et al. 2004). This new development comes as a crucial step to move beyond the primary area of change – the conversion of forests – to study the changes in agricultural areas, mainly the land-use strategies resulting in different agricultural intensification levels (Lambin et al. 2000; Laney 2004).

"Despite the range of subjects that Debret illustrates, historians of Brazil have usually only reproduced his images of Afro-Brazilian slaves. This is understandable, given the political, social and economic interest in the topic and the fact that Debret is one of the few artists who portrayed the horrors of slavery in Brazil at so early date.3 The keen interest in slavery as an historical topic has also led some scholars to assume that all Afro-Brazilians depicted in Debret's volumes are slaves, when many individuals may in fact have been free.4 While acknowledging the importance of examining Debret's images …

"Retainer" Bureaucracy: An Impediment To The Process Of Democratic Governance In Nepal, Sucheta Pyakuryal
"Retainer" Bureaucracy: An Impediment To The Process Of Democratic Governance In Nepal, Sucheta Pyakuryal
Himalayan Research Papers Archive
The role of public bureaucracy has been one of the most discussed characteristics of a state, especially if the political system of a particular state is in a developing stage. In Nepal, up to 1990 the absolute power of monarchy was maintained through a traditional or a pre-modern bureaucracy typically comprised of the caste and class elites. Merit was a superficial criterion. According to Riggs (1994) when non-merit appointees are able to retain their status as bureaucrats, they typically become a powerful political force. Compounded by their want of administrative qualifications, they start forming self protective networks in order to …
