Far-Flung Friends
Many journeys began on the slopes of Mount St. James, and Holy Cross alumni can be found all over this ever-shrinking planet. What is it that drives these wanderers? Meet nine alums who took the road less traveled. Where did they go? Why did they leave? And what did they learn?

The V-12 Program
While World War II raged, the College faced the wholesale emptying of its classrooms as young men enlisted—or were drafted, into the armed services. Then, in July 1943, Holy Cross became one of 131 institutions across the …

Letter From Paisley Currah, Outgoing Executive Director, Paisley Currah

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

"Unzipping the Monster Dick." I thought nothing of this title when planning the fall 2003 CLAGS and a speaker, Santiago Solis, suggested it. It seemed to me, a denizen of the world of queer studies, unremarkable, even normal as I jotted it down. Solis, who was finishing his PhD in Learning Dis/abilities at Teachers College, Columbia University at the time, had the requisite explanatory subtitle: "Deconstructing Ableist Penile Representations in two Ethnic Homoerotic Magazines."

Traditional Natural Resources Management Practices And Biodiversity Conservation In Ghana: A Review Of Local Concepts And Issues On Change And Sustainability, Paul Sarfo-Mensah, W. Oduro

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper reviews the importance of traditional natural resources management practices in Ghana. It highlights the roles of traditional beliefs, taboos and rituals in the management and conservation of key natural resources in the country. The paper is based on desk studies undertaken as part of anthropological studies conducted in the forest-savanna transitional agroecological zone of Ghana to study the spirituality of forests and conservation. Among the major conclusions of the paper is that although the potential of traditional natural resources management for biodiversity conservation in Ghana is enormous, the sustainability of these practices is seriously threatened. This stems from …

Contemporary Migration And Transnational Families: The Case Of Somali Diaspora(S), Mulki Al-Sharmani Oct 2007

Contemporary Migration And Transnational Families: The Case Of Somali Diaspora(S), Mulki Al-Sharmani

Faculty Journal Articles

In this paper, I argue that a central feature of Somali contemporary migration is a transnational way of life, which an increasing number of diasporic Somalis and their families are leading. Transnational families become an important space in which Somalis strategize with their relatives, pool resources, share obligations, and arrange for the movements of individual family members. This kind of transnational way of life becomes a fairly effective mechanism through which diasporic Somalis seek security, protection, opportunities for a better life, and different forms of capital for themselves and their relatives in the homeland and elsewhere. However, living transnationally is …

A Critical Assessment Of The Impact Of World Heritage Site Designation In Sub-Saharan Africa, Lauren Blacik Oct 2007

A Critical Assessment Of The Impact Of World Heritage Site Designation In Sub-Saharan Africa, Lauren Blacik

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Archaeological associations and development agencies alike are celebrating the recent effort by the World Heritage Committee to inscribe as many African sites as fast as it can onto its List recognizing the heritage with the highest universal value to our collective human history. While it seems an obvious move of equality, in reality, this flurry of inscription is doing untold damage to African sites. Issues of local involvement in site management have not been resolved or streamlined, so site designation exposes communities to degradation of their traditions and values. Likewise, traditional management practices have not been institutionalized, often stripping sites …
