Crisis In The Coalfields: State/Corporate Violence, Historical Trauma, & Concentrated Substance Misuse And Harm, Brooke Baker
Crisis In The Coalfields: State/Corporate Violence, Historical Trauma, & Concentrated Substance Misuse And Harm, Brooke Baker
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
What we frame as "the problem" in our society shapes our responses, which also shapes how and where we spend our resources. The prevailing narratives surrounding drug issues in rural coalfields, West Virginia, the Appalachian region, and arguably throughout the U.S. often mischaracterize the problem. This research explored the relationship between state/corporate violence, historical trauma, and concentrated substance misuse and harm in the rural, central Appalachian coalfields. This study employs a trauma-informed, critical ethnographic approach by utilizing participant observation and photo-elicitation interviewing to collect the data, and a critical qualitative framework to analyze it. The main findings of this research …

Antropologi Indonesia
A house is a structured building that originates from human ideas, created to provide a comfortable place for its inhabitants. The concept of a house is inseparable from the socio-cultural environment. Likewise, umma kalada, a local term for the traditional houses of the Sumbanese, especially those in Tarung Village, embodies local wisdom values pertaining to gender relations. This study explores the structure and function of traditional Sumba houses and analyses local wisdom values specifically regarding their gender relations. The research was conducted using an ethnographic approach, involving observations and interviews Rato Rumata, namely the Marapu priest (indigenous religion) …

Indonesia’s National Strategic Project (NSP) is a priority development agenda of Joko Widodo’s administration. Claiming to serve the public interest, they impact people's livelihoods in order to produce new spaces for the circulation of capital. This article aims to examine PSN by situating it within development discourse and practice. The authors argue that PSN is a mode of development that works through the power of exclusion because it is derived from certain assumptions about class, race, and gender, resulting in different consequences among social groups in society that have unequal power relations. Therefore, the authors suggests that a critical examination …
Beyond The State’S Failure To Protect: The Case Of Masungi And The Prospects For Resolving The Environmental Conflict, Antonio P. Contreras
Beyond The State’S Failure To Protect: The Case Of Masungi And The Prospects For Resolving The Environmental Conflict, Antonio P. Contreras
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
Protected areas management is usually confronted with conflicting interests from various stakeholders and would, therefore, entail a search for a rational compromise. The Masungi Georeserve in Rizal Province, which is part of the 26,125.84 hectares that comprise the Upper Marikina River Basin Protected Landscape (UMRBPL), captures the challenges inherent in environmental conflict resolution. This paper analyzes the situation in the Masungi Georeserve using a political ecological lens, particularly applying Michel Foucault’s theory of governmentality and James Scott’s theory of legibility. It is found that attempts of the State to enable governmentality and legibility have further contributed to the conflict. The …
Best Interests Of The Child In Juvenile Justice: Analysis Of Malaysia, Philippines, And Thailand, Mary Grace C. Agcaoili
Best Interests Of The Child In Juvenile Justice: Analysis Of Malaysia, Philippines, And Thailand, Mary Grace C. Agcaoili
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The “best interests of the child” (BIC) is the most referenced child rights principle in international law, whereas juvenile justice is the most mentioned topic. This paper examines how countries in Southeast Asia (SEA) interpret BIC in juvenile justice and if their understanding is consistent with the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and other international standards and why. It contends that BIC’s indeterminate use led to misinterpretation of child rights and that BIC interpretation is influenced by several factors found within the socio-cultural and political economy of SEA. Using Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand as case studies …

Accurately measuring gender and sex is crucial in public health and epidemiology. Iteratively reexamining how variables-including gender and sex-are conceptualized and operationalized is necessary to achieve impactful research. Reexamining gender and sex advances epidemiology toward its goals of health promotion and disease elimination. While we cannot reduce the complexities of sex and gender to simply an issue of measurement, striving to capture these concepts and experiences accurately must be an ongoing dialogue and practice-to the benefit of the field and population health. We assert that epidemiology must counteract misconceptions and accurately measure gender and sex in epidemiology. We aim to …

Faculty Research 2024
Anthropological and biophysical processes have shaped livestock genomes over Millenia and can explain their current geographic distribution and genetic divergence. We analyzed 57 Ethiopian indigenous domestic goat genomes alongside 67 equivalents of east, west, and north‑west African, European, South Asian, Middle East, and wild Bezoar goats. Cluster, ADMIXTURE (K = 4) and phylogenetic analysis revealed four genetic groups comprising African, European, South Asian, and wild Bezoar goats. The Middle Eastern goats had an admixed genome of these four genetic groups. At K = 5, the West African Dwarf and Moroccan goats were separated from East African goats demonstrating a likely …

The Application Of Multi-Isotope Analysis To Assist In Geoprofiling Unidentified Decedents Within Florida, Liotta D. Noche-Dowdy
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The biochemistry of human tissues can provide information for geoprofiling (geographic birthplace or migration patterns) of an unidentified decedent. Utilizing isotope analyses (both stable and radiogenic) from teeth, bone, nails, and/or hair reveals specific isotopic information that correlates to diverse geographic regions reflecting an individual’s birthplace and migration patterns. Isotope analysis of enamel and bone has been employed in bioarchaeology for decades to reconstruct the diet, health, and migration patterns of past populations. Isotope ratios measured from enamel can then be compared to isotope ratios measured from bone of the individual to track patterns of migration. The enamel from the …

Traditional Grassland And Fodder Management Systems In Tanzania And Potential For Improvement, R M. Otsynia, I Essai, D Asenga
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The “Ngitiri” fodder conservation system was developed by the Sukuma agro-pastoralists as a strategy to alleviate acute dry season fodder constraints. This traditional agroforestry system provides the basis and opportunities for development of improved silvipastoral systems. Ngitiri is a major source of dry season fodder supply for livestock and thatch for roofing. The system is widespread in the Sukuma landuse system in central Tanzania. This paper presents the scope and importance of the Ngitiri system, management aspects, constraints, and farmers’ perceptions on improvement. Implications for agroforestry technology development in the Sukuma agropastoral system are also discussed.
Working With Bilingual Populations: Clinical Practices Of Speech-Language Pathologists In New Mexico, Wylie L. Skillman
Working With Bilingual Populations: Clinical Practices Of Speech-Language Pathologists In New Mexico, Wylie L. Skillman
Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs
New Mexico is uniquely positioned as a state that has more bilingual speakers than the United States on average, meaning that Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) here are more likely to work with bilingual speakers than elsewhere. Best practices for bilingual evaluation and treatment are taught in graduate education for SLPs but the extent to which they are known and utilized by school-based SLPs differs based on many factors.
As the body of research supporting culturally responsive bilingual assessment and intervention continue to grow, it is unknown how or if clinicians are using this knowledge to assess and treat students who …

Mother Machines: Deified Domesticity And American Misogyny In Ira Levin’S The Stepford Wives, Emmaline R. Williams
Mother Machines: Deified Domesticity And American Misogyny In Ira Levin’S The Stepford Wives, Emmaline R. Williams
Student Theses and Dissertations
Despite an increased awareness of human rights issues and more interest in intersectional feminist practices in post-postmodern culture, the imprint of the repressed housewife lingers. My research for this work is driven by two central questions: What themes connect the emergence of this image in nineteenth century literature and art to the current social conception of women? What role do men play in maintaining these conceptions and how do they benefit? As such, this thesis examines the last 150 years of women’s social progress and regress. In this analysis centered on Ira Levin’s novel The Stepford Wives, I seek to …

A Greater Distance Between The Readers And The Recounted Story In Salvatore Besso’S Travel Book: The Function Of The Picture Postcards, Panita Silapavithayadilok
Journal of Letters
This article analyses the scanned picture postcards in Salvatore Besso’s travel book with the aim to point out how they assume a crucial role in changing the main theme of the narrative on Siam in this book. From two main themes that run along together in the written narrative, exotism of Siamese culture and the recognition that Siam gained from Western nations, the scanned picture postcards lead the readers to focus particularly, if not only, on the first theme. This article seeks to shed more light to the significance of intermedial perspective in delving into subtle motives in cultural encounters. …

Senses Of The Word /Tɛ̀ː/ In Old Thai (13th – 15th Century Ce), Khet Lengwiriyakul
Journal of Letters
Holding an assumption that the word /tɛ̀ː/ in Thai is polysemous and that the word’s senses are historically related, this research intends to conduct a historical study on the word. The purpose of this study is to find out whether /tɛ̀ː/ in the past used to have senses other than the ones existing in the present. This study aims to analyze the senses of /tɛ̀ː/ in Old Thai (13th – 15th century CE) by applying criteria proposed in Tyler and Evans’s Principled Polysemy (Tyler and Evans 2001; Tyler and Evans 2003; Evans 2004; Evans 2005). By applying the criteria, collocates …

The Geography Of Coins: Culture, Politics, And Power Depicted On Money, Cory Frewing
The Geographical Bulletin
Coins have a language of their own, and governments speak it fluently. This paper discusses the role that coins play in State iconography. As such, coinage can be utilized for pursuing nationalistic ambitions and other centripetal forces that strengthen a State. Likewise, coins can also act as preservers and conveyers of national culture. Religion, language, values, and history have all been prominent subjects on coins from around the world since the Classical Era. Aside from imagery, coins are also products of spatial association, owing their current preponderance to many forms of cultural diffusion. This paper first describes contemporary, circulating world …
