Coping Strategies For Interracial Couples Making Decisions About Children's Education, Bessie Lee Lawton, Dolores Rafter Arevalo, Laura Brown, Anita Foeman

Iowa Journal of Communication

This qualitative research explores the communication processes and outcomes of four interracial couples as they navigate the conversations regarding the formal education of their children. The path and unique negotiated agreements that have emerged from each of these successful cross cultural marriages are worthy of scrutiny and may provide insights for both multicultural education and interracial communication.

Review Of Santiago Guijarro Oporto, Jesús Y Sus Primeros Discípulos [Review Of The Book Jesús Y Sus Primeros Discípulos, By S. Guijarro Oporto], Rubén R. Dupertuis

Religion Faculty Research

This book collects nine studies by the author, each of which addresses slightly different aspects of the study of earliest Christianity in Palestine. All but one of the essays have been previously published between the years 2000 and 2006. As such, the book does not systematically work toward a single argument; nonetheless, the various chapters display a remarkable unity by virtue of addressing aspects of the study of the Synoptic Gospels and by means of a largely consistent methodological approach that can be described as a combination of typical New Testament methods and approaches, such as form and redaction criticism, …

Transitional Justice In A Transnational World: The Ambiguous Role Of Law, Peer Zumbansen Jan 2008

Transitional Justice In A Transnational World: The Ambiguous Role Of Law, Peer Zumbansen

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

In situations of military, political or economic transition, the reassessment of the role of law in the transition process becomes a crucial site of a people's or a nation's negotiating the past, present and future. Allusions to a tabula rasa or an annee zero after traumatic collapses of societal order, however, turn into ill-fated attempts to address the challenges of confronting the past when building the future. The law's concern with nations that struggle with transition expresses itself through hybrid concepts such as transitional or post-conflict justice, restorative justice, or reconciliation. This paper revisits these instantiations and places them in …

Toward A Visceral Scholarship Online: Folkvine.Org And Hypermedia Ethnography, Craig Saper Jan 2008

Toward A Visceral Scholarship Online: Folkvine.Org And Hypermedia Ethnography, Craig Saper

The Journal of e-Media Studies

This essay describes an experiment in scholarly presentation and ethnographic representation. The project, called folkvine.org, focuses on folk art and artists in Florida. It specifically examines Ruby C. Williams, Taft Richardson, Diamond Jim Parker, the Scott family, and Ginger LaVoie among many other folk and outsider artists represented on the website. Design functions as a crucial aspect of the content to illuminate the sensibility of the artists and traditions explored. The visceral, visual, and sonic modes function not as ornamentation. The visceral design of scholarship, not merely an ornament or a necessarily invisible lens for scholarship, has unique advantages. This …

The Age, Function, And Distribution Of Keyhole Structures In The Upper Susquehanna River Valley, Douglas H. Macdonald

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This paper provides a summary of current data regarding the age, geographical distribution, and function of keyhole structures in the upper Susquehanna River Valley of north-central Pennsylvania and south-central New York. Keyhole structures have been identified at 11 sites in the West and North Branches of the Susquehanna River Valley. The feature type likely originated in the West Branch Valley from which it spread to the north, south, and east. Their main period of use was during the latter portion of the Late Woodland period, between approximately 1230 and 1670 A.D. Given the locations of the sites along major waterways, …

E-Poetry: Between Image And Performance -- A Cultural Analysis, Jan Baetens, Jan Van Looy Jan 2008

E-Poetry: Between Image And Performance -- A Cultural Analysis, Jan Baetens, Jan Van Looy

The Journal of e-Media Studies

By establishing an opposition between two ways of studying e-poetry: the patrimonial stance, which historicizes and canonizes a corpus and the cultural stance, which discusses e-poetry in its social context, the article makes a plea for a broad, cultural approach to electronic reading and writing. This approach defines e-poetry in terms of performance, placing a strong emphasis on the mediated and often networked environment in which e-poetry creation and reception take place. The close reading of two examples by Pierre Alferi and Eric Sadin, two prominent authors of electronic literature in France, further illustrates the idea of writing and reading …

Living With Stories, William Schneider Jan 2008

Living With Stories, William Schneider

All USU Press Publications

In essays about communities as varied as Alaskan Native, East Indian, Palestinian, Mexican, and African American, oral historians, folklorists, and anthropologists look at how traditional and historical oral narratives live through re-tellings, gaining meaning and significance in repeated performances, from varying contexts, through cultural and historical knowing, and due to tellers' consciousness of their audiences.

The Folklore Muse, Frank De Caro Jan 2008

The Folklore Muse, Frank De Caro

All USU Press Publications

Folklore—the inherently creative expression, transmission, and performance of cultural traditions—has always provided a deep well of material for writers, musicians, and artists of all sorts. Folklorists usually employ descriptive and analytical prose, but they, like scholars in other social sciences, have increasingly sought new, creative and reflexive modes of discourse. Many folklorists are also creative writers, some well known as such, and the folk traditions they research often provide shape and substance to their work. This collection of creative writing grounded in folklore and its study brings together some of the best examples of such writing.

The Fierce Tribe, Mickey Weems Jan 2008

The Fierce Tribe, Mickey Weems

All USU Press Publications

In this ethnography that documents the folk nature of popular culture, Mickey Weems applies interdisciplinary interpretation to a subject that demands such a breakdown of intellectual boundaries. The Circuit, an expression of gay culture, comprises large dance events—gatherings, celebrations, communions, festivals. Music and dance drive complex, shared performances—electronic house music played by professional DJs and mass ecstatic dancing that engenders communitas. Other performances, from drag queens and concerts to contests, theatrics, and the individual display of muscular bodies are part of the festivities.

Body sculpting through muscle building is strongly associated with the Circuit, and masculine aggression is both displayed …

An Ethnography Of The English Language Industry In The Republic Of Korea, Melissa Stachel Jan 2008

An Ethnography Of The English Language Industry In The Republic Of Korea, Melissa Stachel

Digitized Theses

This thesis is the outcome of four months of multi-sited ethnographic research conducted in Canada and South Korea. It is my thesis that two beliefs, one held by Koreans and the other by foreign English instructors, maintain the English language industry in South Korea. South Koreans, I will show, believe that education, and specifically English, grants an individual and his or her family status. This belief, I argue, ensures a steady demand for English language instructors in the country. It is not only the desire to fill this demand, however, that motivates native English speakers to travel to South Korea. …

Borders Of Knowledge: Cultural And Political Borderlands, Identity And The Ironsides In The Great Lakes (1790-1863), Ellen Kimberly Brown Jan 2008

Borders Of Knowledge: Cultural And Political Borderlands, Identity And The Ironsides In The Great Lakes (1790-1863), Ellen Kimberly Brown

Digitized Theses

This thesis which examines three generations of the Ironside family that lived through the frontier borderlands, along western Lake Erie and the Detroit River, and later along north Lake Huron and Manitoulin Island, is ideal for exploring how identity on a physical borderland, and between the biological and cultural borderlands between European and Native, could be revised to serve personal notions of self, as well as to create a hybrid of innovative categories of identity. To achieve this exploration, I examine the identity of the Ironside family by primarily focusing on correspondence by members of this family, written in official …

A Multivariate Taphonomic Approach To Understanding Midden Formation In Thule Inuit Contexts: A Case Study From Arctic Canada, Tom Porawski Jan 2008

A Multivariate Taphonomic Approach To Understanding Midden Formation In Thule Inuit Contexts: A Case Study From Arctic Canada, Tom Porawski

Digitized Theses

Archaeologists attempting to reconstruct local and regional Thule subsistence behaviour place great emphasis on faunal assemblages recovered from Thule semisubterranean house structures and their associated middens (refuse dumps). Despite the importance of this dataset, limited attention has been given to understanding the taphonomic processes that created these assemblages. The faunal material observed in middens can be highly variable due to the impact of natural and cultural formation processes. This thesis uses faunal data collected from a Thule site (NeHd-1, ca. AD 1400-1600) located near Hall Beach, Nunavut to examine the formation and preservation of three different middens. Application of a …

Being And Belonging: Identity And Community Among Gay Asian-Canadians In Toronto, Pamela S. Yuen Jan 2008

Being And Belonging: Identity And Community Among Gay Asian-Canadians In Toronto, Pamela S. Yuen

Digitized Theses

This thesis examines the concepts of identity, community and belonging among gay and Queer Asian-Canadian men and women who live in the Greater Toronto Area. Most of these persons emigrated from East Asia with their families through the late 1970s to 1990s and subsequently came of age in Canada. I look at the ways in which ethnicity and sexuality converge in the life histories of these individuals through a range of topics that demonstrate how individuals conceptualize themselves and each other, as well as how social networks are formed and maintained. I argue that ethnic and sexual boundaries are not …
