“I Had Time To Do My Research, Had Time To Think And Educate Myself”: Using Information Work For Nonbinary And Genderfluid Identity Self-Recognition During Covid-19 Isolation, Amy L. Stone, Alexandra Gallin-Parisi
Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research
During the COVID-19 pandemic, nonbinary and genderfluid adults did information work to discover their gender identities as they explored information on social media, online, and in person. Due to cisnormative restrictions, this information was necessary to identify and validate their gender identity as authentic. During the pandemic, more nonbinary people were able to self-recognize their own gender because there was more time for reflection and more access to nonbinary narratives online, including representations of nonbinary life that defied White, thin, androgynous ideals. By analyzing interviews with 22 U.S. adults who came out as nonbinary during the pandemic, this qualitative study …
Females In Corporate Board Diversity And Its Impact On Earnings Quality, Kenny Ardillah
Females In Corporate Board Diversity And Its Impact On Earnings Quality, Kenny Ardillah
Journal of Accounting Auditing and Business
Earnings quality is formed on corporate governance. The company's internal governance mechanism consists of the president director, the finance director, the board of directors, commissioners, and the audit committee. However, there is still a lack of studies exploring the relationship between female in-board diversity and earnings quality, especially in Indonesia. It is because Indonesia has a unique corporate governance system, even though Indonesia follows a corporate governance system on the European continent, namely the two-tier boards. This study aims to determine the influence of female president directors, female finance directors, female board of directors, female board of commissioners, and female …
The Memory-Keeping Daughter: Exploring Object Stories And Family Legacies From America's Modern Wars, Susan R. Grayzel
The Memory-Keeping Daughter: Exploring Object Stories And Family Legacies From America's Modern Wars, Susan R. Grayzel
History Faculty Publications
This essay demonstrates how wartime objects can have a special resonance in families as keepers of memory, and it especially explores the role of daughters of military participants in preserving the artifacts of their veteran fathers. Using several case studies from a recent public history project collecting objects and object stories in the American southwest, it argues that a focus on daughters as caretakers of family military history offers a new way to engage with descendants' histories by showing how the work of such women can contribute to our understanding of modern war and its legacies.

Exploring Students' Perceptions And Experiences Of Faculty Caring In The Undergraduate Classroom In A Traditional Baccalaureate Nursing Program: A Qualitative Descriptive Study, Sheila M. Garilli
Dissertations
Academic nurse educators' use of caring attributes in the classroom could impact students' educational journey. Educators are leaders who should model caring behaviors toward their students. This role modeling will empower students to demonstrate these caring behaviors toward their patients. A literature review discovered a gap surrounding the study of faculty caring in the classroom. This research study explored students' perceptions and experiences of faculty caring in the undergraduate classroom in two traditional baccalaureate nursing programs. This study utilized a qualitative descriptive method with purposeful sampling and in-person recruitment at two universities in a Northeastern state in the United States. …

Digital Place-Futures Outside A Colonial Metaversal Imaginary: Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley’S We Are Here Because Of Those That Are Not As Critical Digital Place-Craft, Luke A. Meeken
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
In this piece, the author analyzes a recorded digital walk through Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley’s WE ARE HERE BECAUSE OF THOSE THAT ARE NOT, a digital archival place designed to contain, protect, and share the experiences of Black trans people. The author’s encounter with Brathwaite-Shirley’s work is contextualized and analyzed through critical and decolonial place lenses and digital materialist lenses. Particular attention is paid to the ways physical and digital places crafted in colonial contexts bodily habituate settler-colonial sensibilities. The author examines how the critical digital placemaking strategies practiced by Brathwaite-Shirley informed teacher and student place-craft within the context of a …

Mental Health In South Georgia: Another Area Of Disadvantage For An Underserved Region, But Pandemic-Related Policy Changes Suggest Pathways Forward, Shelly Yankovskyy, Anne Price
Proceedings of the annual meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society
Mental health is a contemporary issue of key concern among academics and policymakers, especially due to the exacerbation of mental health issues with the COVID-19 pandemic. Increases in mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, suicide, opioid overdose, and youth depression are the subject of research and governmental-allocated grant funding and new policies have been put in place at multiple institutional levels. We utilize a political economy framework to understand the incidence of mental health disorders and explore how new programs and policies have been implemented in Georgia to address and support mental health at various institutional levels, such as …
Embodiment And Meaning: Muay Thai In Different Cultural Contexts, Dana B. Dawson
Embodiment And Meaning: Muay Thai In Different Cultural Contexts, Dana B. Dawson
Proceedings of the annual meeting of the Southern Anthropological Society
This qualitative meta-analysis, drawing from published articles, books, and ethnographies, examines Muay Thai through the interdisciplinary lens of martial arts studies, cultural studies, and anthropological literature. I argue that the interpretation of Muay Thai is intricately tied to its cultural context, revealing dimensions such as cultural heritage, systemic violence, and the global dissemination of martial arts. Framed within anthropological literature on embodiment and cultural performance, the paper understands Muay Thai, akin to dance, as an embodied cultural performance shaped by bodily knowledge and practice. The analysis delves into the nuanced meanings of Muay Thai across three cultural contexts: native practitioners …

The Great Spirit In Indigenous Peoples' Lives And The Future Of Pneumatology, Jojo M. Fung Sj
The Great Spirit In Indigenous Peoples' Lives And The Future Of Pneumatology, Jojo M. Fung Sj
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
With the unsustainability of the current global economic and financial systems that have exacerbated the ecological crises, it is timely to turn our attention to the shamanic religiosity of the indigenous peoples. The wisdomteachings of shamanic pneumatology are invaluable in helping the earth community to negotiate this critical ecological era. The first part of this paper explains the indigenous understanding and experience of the Great Spirit. The second part will delve into the future of pneumatology in terms of the three major paths: live-in dialogue, plunging into the depth of religious mystical traditions, and dialogue with modern science and cosmology.
Body And Prayer: Comparing Taoist And Christian Methods Of Meditation, Paulin Batairwa Kubuya Sx
Body And Prayer: Comparing Taoist And Christian Methods Of Meditation, Paulin Batairwa Kubuya Sx
Asia Pacific Mission Studies
This article explores the problems arising from the cross-cultural setting where these eastern and western meditative traditions meet. It further suggests that every interpretation and expansion of methods of meditation has to bear in mind the broadness and complexity of the new multicultural environment where the old techniques are being practiced. Such awareness will enable the birth of appropriate methods inspired by old traditions and yet fit for today's spiritual needs. Within overviews of the Taoist and Christian practices of meditation, we focus on the body—its role and place in meditation—to understand how Taoist and Christian meditations are related.
Water Throughout The Green Energy Transition: Hydrosocial Dimensions Of Coal, Natural Gas, And Lithium, Joshua J. Cousins, Alida Cantor, Bethani Turley
Water Throughout The Green Energy Transition: Hydrosocial Dimensions Of Coal, Natural Gas, And Lithium, Joshua J. Cousins, Alida Cantor, Bethani Turley
Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
Energy transitions are reshaping hydrosocial relations. How they will be reshaped, however, depends on location and water's material relationship to other resources and industrial activities embedded within energy transitions. To highlight this, we focus on three different resources—coal, natural gas, and lithium—to signal how the water–energy nexus will be reworked in a transition away from fossil fuels. We examine the water–coal nexus as an example of a resource relationship that is transitioning out, or that is being moved away from in the green energy transition. Natural gas represents the “bridge fuel” used through the transition. Lithium illustrates a resource inside …

Strategic Insights For Developing Protected Areas System With National Parks As Mainstay In New Era: Marking 20 Years Of “Lucid Waters And Lush Mountains Are Invaluable Assets”, Baorong Huang, Xuetian Hu, Huizhi Zhang, Ling Tang, Zhi Wang, Zhi Zhang
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
In the new era, the advancement of Chinese path to modernization places new demands on the development of a protected areas system with national parks as the mainstay. At the same time, as reform deepens, the system faces emerging challenges, including outdated conservation concepts, insufficient systemic integration, proliferation of management exclusions, and weak social functions, hindering the effective transformation of lucid waters and lush mountains into invaluable assets. This study recommends that, guided by the two mountains concept and aligned with the strategic goals of national modernization, China must comprehensively advance the construction and reform of the protected areas system …

Working (Around/Within/Against) Prior Appropriation: Diverse Hydrosocial Practices To Secure Water For Rivers, Alida Cantor, Jillian Farley, Thien-Kim Bui, Zachary Boyce
Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
Water scarcity in the Western US, through the lens of political ecology, can be understood as inextricably shaped by power dynamics, governance structures, and legal practices of resource allocation. Water allocation in the region is determined largely by the legal doctrine of Prior Appropriation, the 'first in time, first in right' principle. However, prior appropriation is fundamentally based in anthropocentric and settler colonial assumptions, and in light of drought, climate change, and shifting social and environmental values, the system has been critiqued as inadequate to meet contemporary water challenges. Despite challenging historical legacies, water managers in the Western US are …

Memetic Memory As Vital Conduits Of Troublemakers In Digital Culture, Alexander O. Smith, Jordan Loewen-Colón
School of Information Studies - Post-doc and Student Scholarship
Recent fears of data capitalism and colonialism often argue using implicit assumptions about cybernetic technology’s ability to automate data about culture. As such, the level of data granularity made possible by cybernetic engineering can be used to dominate society and culture. Here we unpack these implicit assumptions about the datafication of culture through memes, which both act as cultural data and cultural memory. Using Alexander Galloway’s critical method of protocological analysis and descriptions of media tactics, we respond to fears of cybernetic domination. Protocols – the source by which cybernetic technologies enable automated datafication – enables us to respond to …

Growth in the green jobs sector has increased demand for college graduates who are prepared to enter the workforce with interdisciplinary sustainability skills. Simultaneously, scholarly calls for interdisciplinary collaboration in the service of addressing the societal challenges of enhancing resilience and sustainability have also increased in recent years. However, developing, executing, and assessing interdisciplinary content and skills at the post-secondary level has been challenging. The objective of this paper is to offer the Food-Energy-Water (FEW) Nexus as a powerful way to achieve sustainability competencies and matriculate graduates who will be equipped to facilitate the transformation of the global society by …

Accuracy, Thoroughness, And Quality Of Outpatient Primary Care Documentation In The U.S. Department Of Veterans Affairs., Michael Weiner, Mindy E Flanagan, Katie Ernst, Ann H Cottingham, Nicholas A Rattray, Zamal Franks, April W Savoy, Joy L Lee, Richard M Frankel
Health Services and Informatics Research
BACKGROUND: Electronic health records (EHRs) can accelerate documentation and may enhance details of notes, or complicate documentation and introduce errors. Comprehensive assessment of documentation quality requires comparing documentation to what transpires during the clinical encounter itself. We assessed outpatient primary care notes and corresponding recorded encounters to determine accuracy, thoroughness, and several additional key measures of documentation quality.
METHODS: Patients and primary care clinicians across five midwestern primary care clinics of the US Department of Veterans Affairs were recruited into a prospective observational study. Clinical encounters were video-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Using the Physician Documentation Quality Instrument (PDQI-9) added to …
Social Media As A Coping Strategy For Indonesian Migrant Mothers In Hong Kong To Maintain Mothering Roles, Irfan Wahyudi, Panizza Allmark
Social Media As A Coping Strategy For Indonesian Migrant Mothers In Hong Kong To Maintain Mothering Roles, Irfan Wahyudi, Panizza Allmark
Journal of International Women's Studies
In Hong Kong, Indonesian migrant domestic workers (IMDWs) are forced to leave behind young children in their home country. Often spending the majority of their time in their employer’s households, they must manage their limited personal time to maintain connections with their families back home. Many women IMDWs try to overcome distance limitations by performing transnational mothering using any available media to reach their children and to manage and witness their development. By using communication tools such as Internet-mediated calls for distance nurturing, they are able to keep up with their children’s lives and monitor day-to-day developments. This research examines …

Marginalization And Environmental Risk: Women’S Roles In Making Plastic Woven Bags In Indonesia, Salsabila Damayanti, Siti Mas’Udah, Asia Ashfaq, Sudarso, Herdiyanti, Citra Asmara Indra, Merlia Indah Prastiwi
Journal of International Women's Studies
The plastic woven bag has become a symbolic representation of Indonesian women’s identity since the trend increased in 2021. The plastic woven bag represents femininity and the image of women as a result of socio-cultural construction. The activity of weaving paradoxically puts women in both a central and a marginal role. The weaving industry is characterized by an increasing number of platforms for women to generate income and improve their economic welfare. Nevertheless, women are still faced with patriarchal domination, because the demands of their domestic role limit their ability to move freely in public space. Therefore, their status as …
