A Theory Of Cultural Glocality, Sarah Elizabeth Fernandez Jan 2009

A Theory Of Cultural Glocality, Sarah Elizabeth Fernandez

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A Theory of Cultural Glocality shows how globalization can be salvaged from the negativity that often surrounds it. Globalization has been the target of criticism that claims globalization is pushed on cultures and in the process is destroying local cultures. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the limitations of globalization critics and show that it is not a negative force, that there is a healthy form of globalization. Therefore, globalization does not have to be considered disastrous for local cultures. Glocalizing provides cultures with a way to balance the local and the global in a healthy way where …

Information Literacy, “New” Literacies, And Literacy, John Buschman Jan 2009

Information Literacy, “New” Literacies, And Literacy, John Buschman

Library Publications

Literacy was once thought to be well-understood and well-defined. However, it has been argued that the digital world has disrupted any notions of literacy, supplanted with “new” forms of literacies in various new literacy studies and now, in the library and information science (LIS) scholarship as they apply to information literacy (IL). But, do the old forms of literacy in fact hold LIS back, and, do the critiques of conceptions of literacy fully represent that foundational scholarship? Are the “new” literacies really that different from traditional notions of literacy? A review of: concepts of literacy and IL that have been …

Cultural Culprits, Michelle Mckinley Jan 2009

Cultural Culprits, Michelle Mckinley

Studio for Law and Culture

This paper draws from a longer Article that examines questions of agency, victimization, and cultural essentialism in U.S. asylum adjudication and cultural defense cases specifically, and in international human rights law more broadly. I explore the adjudication of FGC asylum claims based on cultural persecution” that encode a racialized view of culture. I describe the historical trajectory of contemporary FGC claims through a detailed analysis of colonial anti-excision campaigns. I compare early 19th century anti-excision campaigns with contemporary maternal imperialism, as international law, UN agencies, and international financial institutions became more responsive to feminist concerns about eradicating FGC. Throughout the …

Blackboard Jungle: Delinquency, Psychiatry, And The Bio-Politics Of Brown, Anders Walker Jan 2009

Blackboard Jungle: Delinquency, Psychiatry, And The Bio-Politics Of Brown, Anders Walker

Studio for Law and Culture

In 1955, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer released a controversial film about juvenile delinquency entitled Blackboard Jungle. Georgia Governor Ernest Vandiver subsequently used the film as a metaphor for what would happen to southern schools were Brown enforced, marking the beginnings of a much larger campaign to articulate southern resistance to integration in popular terms. Taking Blackboard Jungle as a starting point, this article recovers the intersection between discourses of delinquency and desegregation at mid-century, showing how civil rights groups and segregationists alike both drew from mass culture and social psychiatry to advance their constitutional agendas. It concludes by showing that even as …

Control-Force Inputs Obtained From Pilots And Nonpilots (Flight Attendants): Comparison With Established Handbook Distributions Of Performance, Dennis B. Beringer Jan 2009

Control-Force Inputs Obtained From Pilots And Nonpilots (Flight Attendants): Comparison With Established Handbook Distributions Of Performance, Dennis B. Beringer

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2009

Earlier reports in this series (Beringer, 2006-2008) have reported the force that pilots and nonpilots could exert on flight controls. This paper presents a comparison of some well-known tables of human strength with the values from recent samples of women and men pilots and nonpilots in an attempt to determine how closely those distributions fit tabled distributions of human strength. Findings suggest that some other samples may be used to approximate the difficult-to-sample Part 121 female pilots if the data are treated properly. Specifically, yoke-activation tasks for the female pilots could be reasonably well approximated by fractional performance values of …

Religious Freedom, Democracy, And International Human Rights, John Witte Jr., M. Christian Green Jan 2009

Religious Freedom, Democracy, And International Human Rights, John Witte Jr., M. Christian Green

Faculty Articles

Clearly, religion and freedom do not yet coincide in many countries, however rosy their new constitutional claims are as to religious rights and freedoms for all. Apostasy, Blasphemy, Conversion, Defamation, and Evangelization-these are the new alphabet of religious rights violation in a number of regions around the world. Occurring at the intersection of religion and international human rights, these violations are also challenges to the universality of human rights and the democratic institutions that generate and affirm them.

The Relationship Between Parental Influence And Christian Spiritual Practices Among Adventist Youth In Puerto Rico, Obed Jiménez

Dissertations

Problem. Typically, parents do not realize how influential they are in fostering spiritual growth in their children and are not aware of key influential factors that can motivate their children in practicing spiritual disciplines such as prayer, Bible reading, meditation, and church attendance.

Method. This study used data from the Avance PR study conducted during the months of March and October 1995. The population for this study was high-school students enrolled in Seventh-day Adventist academies and youth who attended Seventh-day Adventist churches in Puerto Rico. A Critical Evaluation Of John Hick's Religious Pluralism In Light Of His Eschatological Model, Haejong Je Jan 2009

A Critical Evaluation Of John Hick's Religious Pluralism In Light Of His Eschatological Model, Haejong Je

Dissertations

Introduction to the Problem

The philosophy of John Hick, who is famous for his religious pluralism, has received vigorous study in terms of its epistemology, authority, the concept of God, and Christology. However, less attention has been given to his pareschatology. As explained below, initial investigation shows that there is a need for in-depth study of Hick’s religious philosophy in this area.

The Problem

Based upon preliminary research, Hick’s religious pluralism seems to reveal a critical problem with external correspondency, as follows. His pareschatology, which is an attempt to accept all eschatologies of major world religions as valid, may as …

Geografía Social De Zonas Críticas En México Su Contexto Económico Político: 1982-2005, Jose Antonio Roldan Amaro, Gabriel Saucedo Arteaga, Marsela Alvarez Izazaga, Richard Meindl, Cynthia Thompson, Tremaine Gregory

Peer Reviewed Articles

The Divide Of The Coca Leaf: National Culture And The Drug Policies Of Bolivia And The United States, Megan Koops Jan 2009

The Divide Of The Coca Leaf: National Culture And The Drug Policies Of Bolivia And The United States, Megan Koops

SPNA Review

While the United States and Bolivian cultures have different values, attitudes and norms, these differences have not been a major factor in determining the aid Bolivia receives from the United States (US). Now, President Morales, a former union leader for coca leaf growers, has refused to comply with US foreign policy to eradicate the coca leaf, creating political and cultural tension. This paper examines the US and Bolivian relationship as a case study through Schein’s organizational cultural theory and Adler’s culture theory to determine how Bolivia’s battle to save the coca leaf may affect the aid it receives from the …

Feeding The Fledgling Repository: Starting An Institutional Repository At An Academic Health Sciences Library., Ann E. Koopman, Am, Daniel G. Kipnis, Msi

Academic Commons and Scott Memorial Library Staff Papers and Presentations

In 2005, the Scott Memorial Library at Thomas Jefferson University started an institutional repository (IR), the Jefferson Digital Commons (JDC) . Originally intended as a showcase for faculty scholarship, it has evolved to serve also as a university press for original journals and newsletters, and as an institutional archive. Many lessons have been learned about marketing techniques, common IR issues, and advantages of an IR for a library. IR recruitment has come to be viewed as yet another form of collection development and has been integrated into all forms of the Library's outreach. Jefferson's academic health sciences environment has proven …

Unhitching The Horse From The Carriage: Love And Marriage Among The Mosuo, Judith Stacey Jan 2009

Unhitching The Horse From The Carriage: Love And Marriage Among The Mosuo, Judith Stacey

Utah Law Review

In the end, however, the fate of Mosuo kinship will not depend on this sort of cost-benefit analysis of its upsides and downsides. Somewhat poignantly, the very factor that dooms durable relationships between the Mosuo and outsiders now threatens the survival of the Mosuo kinship system itself. To reconcile the pure relationship and family stability, tisese depends upon a high degree of geographic immobility, and perhaps on social and economic stability as well. Cultural conformity also is crucial to sustain intergenerational, extended families. Inherent Mosuo family conflicts over whether or when to divide households due to size and discord seem …

Docile Bodies: Transnational Research Ethics As Biopolitics, M. Therese Lysaught Jan 2009

Docile Bodies: Transnational Research Ethics As Biopolitics, M. Therese Lysaught

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

This essay explores the claim that bioethics has become a mode of biopolitics. It seeks to illuminate one of the myriad of ways that bioethics joins other institutionalized discursive practices in the task of producing, organizing, and managing the bodies—of policing and controlling populations—in order to empower larger institutional agents. The focus of this analysis is the contemporary practice of transnational biomedical research. The analysis is catalyzed by the enormous transformation in the political economy of transnational research that has occurred over the past three decades and the accompanying increase in the numbers of human bodies now subjected to research. …

Korean Older Intimate Partner Violence Survivors In North America: Cultural Considerations And Practice Recommendations, Woochan Shim, Holly Nelson-Becker

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

While literature on elder abuse has expanded, elder abuse by intimate partners has been less investigated. Even less is known about intimate partner violence among older Koreans living in North America. This article identifies important cultural considerations for individuals helping the Korean older adult community beginning with the definition of intimate partner violence in this community and barriers to leaving that include traditional views of the East Asian self. Current practice interventions are discussed and recommendations for future practice such as healing han, the accumulated suffering from years of abuse, are suggested. The ultimate goal of this paper is …

The Plurality Of Religions And The Spirit Of Pluralism: A Participatory Vision Of The Future Of Religion, Jorge N. Ferrer Jan 2009

The Plurality Of Religions And The Spirit Of Pluralism: A Participatory Vision Of The Future Of Religion, Jorge N. Ferrer

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This paper first uncovers the subtle spiritual narcissism that has characterized historical approaches

to religious diversity and discusses the shortcomings of the main forms of religious pluralism that

have been proposed as its antidote: ecumenical, soteriological, postmodern, and metaphysical. It

then argues that a participatory pluralism paves the way for an appreciation of religious diversity that

eschews the dogmatism and competitiveness involved in privileging any particular tradition over the

rest without falling into cultural-linguistic or naturalistic reductionisms. Discussion includes the

question of the validity of spiritual truths and the development of a participatory critical theory of

religion. The essay concludes …

Towards A Transpersonal Psychology Of Daoism: Definitions, Past Research, And Future Directions, Christopher Cott, Adam Rock Jan 2009

Towards A Transpersonal Psychology Of Daoism: Definitions, Past Research, And Future Directions, Christopher Cott, Adam Rock

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This paper is aimed at facilitating the study of Daoism, a collection of Chinese philosophical

beliefs and psychospiritual practices with a history of thousands of years and a living

community that stretches throughout East Asia, from a transpersonal psychology perspective.

Transpersonal psychologists who wish to embark upon a study of Daoist phenomena

must first be cognizant of the often nebulous parameters of the Daoist field of inquiry.

Therefore, an overview is offered of the two primary Daoist informational sources: the living

Daoist tradition as represented predominantly by the Quanzhen and Tianshi traditions,

and textual sources in collections such as the …

Ayahuasca–From Dangerous Drug To National Heritage: An Interview With Antonio A. Arantes, Beatriz C. Labate, Ilana Goldstein

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This interview with Antonio A. Arantes, Brazilian anthropology professor and recognized

specialist on the topics of intellectual property and traditional knowledge, addresses the 2008

request by Brazilian ayahuasca groups to be recognized as part of the immaterial cultural

heritage of Brazil. In the first portion of the interview, Arantes reflects on the challenges

of the new conceptions of the Brazilian national immaterial policy program. He discusses

several examples of cultural goods recognized by the Brazilian state, such as the candomblé

and the samba, and analyzes the controversial issues involving authenticity and tradition in

these and other similar cases. In the …
