Velázquez: The Spanish Style And The Art Of Devotion, Lawrence L. Saporta Jan 2009

Velázquez: The Spanish Style And The Art Of Devotion, Lawrence L. Saporta

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation offers an account of counter-reformation mystical texts and praxis with art historical applicability to Spanish painting of the Seventeenth Century— particularly the work of Diego Velázquez. The consequences of considering devotional practice and mystical experience in the analysis of Spanish painting in the siglo de oro yields new, more complete, and more intellectually satisfying readings of particular works. Without supplanting the long-established tradition of applying Flemish and Italian models to Diego Velázquez’ work, emphasis is placed on what is authentically Spanish in his accomplishments.

Targeting Tuberculars: Social Stigma And Public Health Campaigns, Filomeno V. Aguilar Jr Jan 2009

Targeting Tuberculars: Social Stigma And Public Health Campaigns, Filomeno V. Aguilar Jr

History Department Faculty Publications

In the fight against tuberculosis one major obstacle is the social stigma associated with the disease. Stigma, which is both relational and contextual, marks the body of the tubercular as a site of danger. This essay reflects on the social history of tuberculosis and proposes that stigma’s contingent history in the Philippines can be traced to public health campaigns carried out during the twentieth century, which sought to segregate and isolate the tubercular to limit contagion but could not provide an effective cure. The stigmatization of tuberculosis persists at present, and public health campaigns may need to address stigma directly.

The Implications Of Language Documentation For An Endangered But Vibrant Language Community: A Historical Perspective, Stephen A. Marlett Jan 2009

The Implications Of Language Documentation For An Endangered But Vibrant Language Community: A Historical Perspective, Stephen A. Marlett

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

Documentation of an endangered language may be a short project that is carried out with urgency and with primarily academic benefits because the speakers are not passing on the language to others. This paper presents historical perspective on a quite different kind of situation. The documentation of the Seri language has taken place over a considerable period of time and with goals that were primarily community-focused. It documents some of the challenges that have been present during those years and also the benefits of that documentation that are just now beginning to be felt by the speakers of that language.

Economic Credit In Renaissance Florence, John Padgett, Paul D. Mclean Jan 2009

Economic Credit In Renaissance Florence, John Padgett, Paul D. Mclean

Working Papers

What were the social and institutional factors that led to, and reinforced, the

precocious emergence of Florentine commercial capitalism,3 especially in the domain of

international merchant-banking? The dominant stream of answers, emphasized by

economic historians and by economists, focuses on the invention in late-medieval and

Renaissance Italy of a variety of innovative business techniques – bills of exchange,

double-entry bookkeeping, partnership contracts, commercial courts. If these impressive

organizational inventions are interpreted as facets of a broader rise of impersonal market

rationality, then a tension emerges in Florentine, and indeed in European, historiography

between economic historians and the work of social …

Beyond Corporate Social Responsibility: Reconciling The Ideals Of A For-Benefit Corporation With Director Fiduciary Duties In The U.S. And Europe, Alissa Mickels

UC Law SF International Law Review

Traditionally, organizations are divided into three sectors: for-profit, non-profit, and the government. Over the past few decades, a new Fourth Sector of organizations has been emerging in the U.S. and abroad. These "Fourth Sector" organizations attempt to integrate social purposes with business methods as seamlessly as possible. A few social entrepreneurs take a more ambitious approach to this "hybrid" approach and are creating For-Benefit corporations that, in addition to integrating social purposes with business methods, adopt a corporate policy to benefit all stakeholders, require inclusive governance and ownership, accountability, and transparency. Will the law allow these For-Benefit corporations to benefit …

[Review Of] Shalini Shankar. Des; Land: Teen Culture, Class And Success In Silicon Valley, Gitanjali Singh

Ethnic Studies Review

Shalini Shankar begins her book by locating her own positionality of growing up in a predominantly white, middle-class high school in suburban New York versus the study's main focus of South Asian youth in Silicon Valley's mostly ethnic neighborhoods. Shankar was encouraged by her Indian, immigrant family to socialize with other South Asians, similar to the youth she studies; however, she clearly notes the stark differences in the researcher and subject divisions. Shankar employs an unusual anthropological approach to study Desi youth in the Silicon Valley by historically contexualizing the economic success of the South Asian community while presenting the …

Trey Ellis's Platitudes: Redefining Black Voices, Quan Manh Ha Jan 2009

Trey Ellis's Platitudes: Redefining Black Voices, Quan Manh Ha

Ethnic Studies Review

Trey Ellis has emerged as a prominent African American writer of the late-twentieth century, despite the small number of his published works. "The New Black Aesthetic," an essay that he first published in CaUaloo in 1989, one year after the publication of his first novel, Platitudes, stands as a manifesto that defines and articulates his perspective on the emerging black literary voices and culture of the time, and on "the future of African American artistic expression" in the postmodern era.1 According to Eric Lott, Ellis's novel parodies the literary and cultural conflict between such male experimental writers as lshmael Reed …

Wind Energy In Indian Country: A Study Of The Challenges And Opportunities Facing South Dakota Tribes, Patrick Garry, Candice J. Spurlin, Derek A. Nelson

Faculty Publications

The development of wind power in Indian country presents a unique opportunity for Indian tribes to advance economic and social interests while adhering to traditional values and mores. Challenges exist, however, for turning wind-rich lands into viable wind energy production sites. This comment focuses on these challenges and highlights the legal issues surrounding such an undertaking as more tribes become interested in pursuing such an opportunity.
