Legitimizing The Invented Congolese Space: The Gaze From Within In Early Congolese Fiction, Kasongo Mulenda Kapanga Jan 2009

Legitimizing The Invented Congolese Space: The Gaze From Within In Early Congolese Fiction, Kasongo Mulenda Kapanga

Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

Postcolonial discourses describe colonization as a process of invention to impose the will of a conquering West on "backward" societies. The will to power conjugated with the need for row materials served as the main catalysts. They put side by side a hegemonic intruder bent on duplicating itself, and a powerless and compliant native unable to react to the blitz of transformations. Hence, the master/slave or father/child relationships that describe the colonial framework. The task is to interrogate these generally accepted assumptions and binary oppositions. Although marginalized, the Congolese native was unwilling to become on object for the colonizer's gaze. …

Community Managed Rural Water Supply Systems In The Dominican Republic : Assessment Of Sustainability Of Systems Built By The National Institute Of Potable Water And Peace Corps, Dominican Republic , Ryan W. Schweitzer

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

In the Dominican Republic economic growth in the past twenty years has not yielded sufficient improvement in access to drinking water services, especially in rural areas where 1.5 million people do not have access to an improved water source (WHO, 2006). Worldwide, strategic development planning in the rural water sector has focused on participatory processes and the use of demand filters to ensure that service levels match community commitment to post-project operation and maintenance. However studies have concluded that an alarmingly high percentage of drinking water systems (20-50%) do not provide service at the design levels and/or fail altogether (up …

Winning Coal At 78° North : Mining, Contingency And The Chaîne Opératoire In Old Longyear City, Seth C. Depasqual

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the evolution of an early 20th century mining system in Spitsbergen as applied by Boston-based Arctic Coal Company (ACC). This analysis will address the following questions: Did the system evolve in a linear, technological-based fashion? Or was the progression more a product of interactions and negotiations with the natural and human landscapes present during the time of occupation? Answers to these questions will be sought through review of historical records and material residues identified during the 2008 field examination on Spitsbergen. The Arctic Coal Company’s flagship mine, ACC Mine No. 1, …

The Six University Consortium Student Mobility Project: Promoting Conflict Resolution In The North American Context, Pauline Tennent, Jessica Senehi, Michael Ross Fowler, Sean Byrne

Peace and Conflict Studies

This article focuses on the North American Conflict Resolution Program - a twenty-first century mobility consortium in which universities in Canada, Mexico, and the United States exchanged students of conflict resolution. Drawing on student perceptions and, in particular, the experiences of the universities of Manitoba and Louisville, the authors discuss the positive outcomes of mobilizing students to study conflict resolution abroad for the students themselves, for faculty members involved, for university and other communities, and for the field of conflict analysis and resolution.

Working The Common Law Pure: Developing The South African Law Of Delict (Torts) In Light Of The Spirit, Purport And Objects Of The South African Constitution's Bill Of Rights, Christopher J. Roederer Jan 2009

Working The Common Law Pure: Developing The South African Law Of Delict (Torts) In Light Of The Spirit, Purport And Objects Of The South African Constitution's Bill Of Rights, Christopher J. Roederer

School of Law Faculty Publications

Part I of this article both situates the South African legal system within a group of systems referred to as mixed jurisdictions and distinguishes it from that group by highlighting South Africa’s open, cosmopolitan tradition. Part II addresses the question of South Africa’s “relevance for us.” This section draws on the lessons of a number of approaches to comparative law and makes the case that South Africa’s law of delict is neither too unique nor too familiar for fruitful and interesting comparisons to the U.S. law of torts. It accomplishes this by explaining a number of core similarities and pointing …

Satellite Photography: Instrumental, Rhetorical, Affective?, Irangi Kaushalya Egodapitiya

Masters Theses

"This study examines how tsunami satellite images operate and could provoke various interpretations. The goal of this research project is to study whether the interpretation of tsunami satellite images could extend beyond scientific features to affective messages. Primarily based on the satellite images of Sri Lanka taken before and during the 2004 tsunami, this study analyses: How could mechanical satellite images, taken automatically by a machine in orbit, become an object of profound emotional meaning?; How do viewer's experiences, knowledge, and discourse affect their interpretations of mechanical artifacts?; How are tsunami satellite images connected to affective responses by viewers?; How …

Annie Marion Maclean, Feminist Pragmatist And Methodologist, Mary Jo Deegan, Michael R. Hill, Susan L. Wortmann

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Annie Marion Maclean was a major Chicago sociologist and methodologist. She was profoundly influenced by the gendered division of labor in sociology during her era. Maclean combined her work with the men and women of the early Chicago school of sociology and the women of Hull-House, an early social settlement. As a feminist pragmatist, Maclean was both a theorist and practitioner who used qualitative and quantitative methods. She set precedents in the Chicago school of ethnography, participant observation, and critical methodology. Maclean, however, was not the “mother” of ethnography. Harriet Martineau holds a far stronger claim to be a founding …

Crowning Glory: A Sociological Study Of Gender In The Beauty Pageant System, Lee Taylor Jan 2009

Crowning Glory: A Sociological Study Of Gender In The Beauty Pageant System, Lee Taylor

Honors Theses

This thesis provides a sociological examination of the personal experiences of beauty pageant participants in the South. By deconstructing the ideal view of women in beauty pageants, I attempted to answer how pageant contestants view their individual participation in the oppressive framework of the beauty pageant contest. In order to provide an in-depth analysis on the role of gender in beauty pageants, I conducted personal interviews and field study observations. Additionally, I researched current online sources and scholarly publications concerning gender and beauty pageants. The beauty pageant system demands that young women alter their bodies and personalities in order to …

Coover's Encyclopedi Satire: The Public Burning Revisited, John Mauldin Jan 2009

Coover's Encyclopedi Satire: The Public Burning Revisited, John Mauldin

Honors Theses

This thesis seeks to explore Robert Coover’s The Public Burning, provide a brief exploration of the encyclopedic form, and subsequently establish The Public Burning as an encyclopedic narrative. It seeks to reanalyze the work through the lens of the encyclopedic narrative, primarily utilizing the critiques of Edward Mendelson. In addition, Northrop Frye and Richard Hardack are also cited extensively for their works the encyclopedic fonn. While the form has been recognized for the better part of a decade now, there is still a relatively small amount of criticism available on the form and on Coover’s work has gone relatively unnoticed …

Avini's City: "Shahri Dar Aasemaan"., Mehrzad Karimabadi

Master's Theses

This thesis examines the documentary Shahri dar Aasemaan (i.e. A City in the Sky) by the late filmmaker Sayyed Morteza Avini's in order to establish its key elements and argue for Avini as an auteur with a unique cinematic style that includes strong personal and ideological ties. Shahri dar Aasemaan, which was Avini's last documentary, covers the initial forty-five-day battle leading to the Iraqi occupation of the Iranian city of Khorramshahr when the Iran-Iraq war broke out in October of 1980. In order to better comprehend Avini as an auteur and his work, this study begins with a brief introduction …

Host Majority Group Members' Acculturation Attitudes Towards Immigrant Groups., Kanako Miwa Jan 2009

Host Majority Group Members' Acculturation Attitudes Towards Immigrant Groups., Kanako Miwa

Master's Theses

One out of every four individuals residing in the U.S. lived in another country before moving to the U.S. Such an individual has to face acculturation. Research has consistently shown that immigrants differ in how they go about their acculturation. However, little is known about what acculturation strategies the majority group members believe immigrants should adopt in the host country. Therefore, the present study examines the host majority group members' (Euro-Americans) acculturation orientations toward two immigrant groups (Mexican and Japanese) on different life domains and identifies individual difference factors (e.g., social dominance orientation, social distance, and self-efficacy) that are related …

Estimating Deer Abundance In Suburban Areas With Infrared-Triggered Cameras, Paul D. Curtis, Bazartseren Boldgiv, Peter M. Mattison, Jason R. Boulanger

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Interactions between humans and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) have become common, often resulting in management actions to mitigate negative impacts. Changes in population size are generally used to judge management actions. We examined deer population estimation techniques during 2 mark-resighting experiments in a woodland-grassland habitat in central New York State and in a suburban area. We compared program NOREMARK, Lincoln-Peterson estimates, and Jacobson’s (1997) buck:doe ratios (BDR) for estimating deer abundance. In the first field trial, we sought to validate the camera survey methods and computer applications. We used infrared-triggered cameras (IRCs) to survey a white-tailed deer population …

Do “Sea Turtles” Creep Faster Than “Soft-Shell Turtles”: A Quantitative Study Of Academic Performance Of Law Faculty In Premier Chinese Law Schools, Wei Zhang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Since the adoption of the “Reform and Opening” policy in 1978, China has revived its century long tradition of sending students and scholars to study in western countries. In recent years, the unprecedented economic growth, paired with an increasingly competitive rate of compensation, has attracted a considerable number of such foreign degree holders back home to work or teach. In modern Chinese vocabulary, these returning talents are named as “sea turtles”, a word mimicking the pronunciation of the Chinese equivalent of the English phrase “coming back from abroad”. On the other hand, in compliance with the ancient Chinese rhetorical technique …

A Court Between: Aboriginal And Treaty Rights In The British Columbia Court Of Appeal, Douglas C. Harris Jan 2009

A Court Between: Aboriginal And Treaty Rights In The British Columbia Court Of Appeal, Douglas C. Harris

All Faculty Publications

This article, one in a collection of articles on the British Columbia Court of Appeal, surveys that court's jurisprudence in the field of Aboriginal and treaty rights. It begins in the 1960s and 1970s with a series of cases that reveal a court confident in its assumption that Aboriginal rights had little bearing on the province. The decisions of the court through the 1970s reflected and consolidated a status quo that had all but ignored Aboriginal rights and title. This would change in the 1980s with a series of remarkable decisions from the court following the constitutional entrenchment of Aboriginal …

Cultural Vulnerability And Resilience In The Arctic: Preliminary Report On Archeological Fieldwork At Cape Krusenstern, Northwest Alaska, Shelby L. Anderson, Adam Freeburg, Ben Fitzhugh

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

While natural scientists track environmental change in response to global warming, less attention has been directed towards human interface with long term Arctic environmental dynamics. Current research at Cape Krusenstern, Alaska, seeks to address this deficit through investigation of human-environmental interactions recorded in archeological and paleoenvironmental data spanning the last 4,000-5,000 years at the Cape, building on the pioneering work conducted at Krusenstern by J. Louis Giddings and Douglas D. Anderson. Systematic survey and use of new mapping technology to record cultural and natural features are methods central to addressing these research questions. Discovery of new archeological features indicates occupation …

Advocating For Sri Lankan Migrant Workers: Obstacles And Challenges, Michele Ruth Gamburd Jan 2009

Advocating For Sri Lankan Migrant Workers: Obstacles And Challenges, Michele Ruth Gamburd

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Nearly a million Sri Lankan women labor as migrant workers, the vast majority in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries in West Asia. They are poorly paid and vulnerable to a wide variety of exploitative labor practices at home and abroad. Despite the importance of worker remittances to the national economy, and in spite of Sri Lanka’s history of organized labor and active political participation, migrants have received only anemic support from the state, labor unions, feminist organizations, and migrant-oriented nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). The article contextualizes Sri Lankan migration within larger-scale economic dynamics (such as global capitalist policies and processes) …

Finding And Dating Cathlapotle, Kenneth M. Ames, Elizabeth A. Sobel Jan 2009

Finding And Dating Cathlapotle, Kenneth M. Ames, Elizabeth A. Sobel

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The people of the Cathlapotle town played a significant role in the fur trade era history of the Lower Columbia River, including Lewis and Clark’s visit on March 29th, 1806. Archaeologists and others have sought the town’s location for years. Long-term research has established that archaeological site 45CL1 on the US Fish and Wildlife Refuge near Ridgefield, Washington is Cathlapotle. This determination is based on the close match between site details with various ethnohistoric accounts of Cathlapotle. The site was occupied by ca. AD 1450 and probably moved there from another nearby location. It was abandoned sometime in the 1830s …
