Contestatory Performative Acts In Transnational Political Meetings, Lane Jan 2009

Contestatory Performative Acts In Transnational Political Meetings, Lane

Societies Without Borders

Young people are often more eager to use creative and artistic potential when acting politically. The article focuses on moments where contestatory performative acts take place in three different transnational political meetings. With these three examples it is shown how these moments of disruption and disorder - when something unexpected captures the core of the political gathering - are crucial elements for deep democracy. In such moments where the political speeches and the practices of the meeting do not match, young political actors are in a crucial role to initiate contestatory performative, and often carnivalesque, acts to execute the issue. …

Cultural Hybridity: Self-Monitoring And Cultural Frame Switching In Third Culture Kids, Ingmar Gorman

Theses & ETDs

The first study sought to examine differences between individuals who spent their youth traveling between multiple countries and those who have not had such experiences. Self-monitoring was explored in light of the reported tendency for such traveled individuals to adapt well to foreign cultures. A 62 item survey consisted of five sections. These were: quantitative assessments of international experiences, a Third Culture Kid (TCK) Questionnaire, a Self-Monitoring Scale, an Emotional Self-Efficacy Scale and a Social Desirability Scale. It was hypothesized that TCKs would score significantly higher than non-TCKs on the Self-Monitoring Scale. Despite no statistically significant differences being found between …

The Catholic Character Of Catholic Universities, Anthony J. Cernera Jan 2009

The Catholic Character Of Catholic Universities, Anthony J. Cernera

Mission & Culture Publications

The signs of the times, that we are living in the midst of, are dramatic, suggesting perhaps radical challenges, but potentially wonderful opportunities, for humanity and the Church, e.g., globalization; the pervasiveness of secularization in the Western world; the encounter with Islam and the increased importance of inter-religious dialogue; the geographical shift of the center of Catholicism; the scientific-technological revolution; the reality of the poor; and the emerging crisis of global warming are among the most significant.

As the Catholic Church emerges as a truly global church, Catholic universities have an essential role to play in its mission in the …

Human Trafficking In The People’S Republic Of China, Annie Dullum

Human Rights & Human Welfare

As China rises to become a superpower and is placed in the national spotlight as the host for the upcoming 2008 Beijing Olympics, China is struggling to represent its ability to be powerful and stable within its own borders resulting from a staggering human rights record. Among the policies contributing to human rights violation, population controls are in place that create barriers to residence and immigration, which means that desperate individuals cannot legally move to other countries. As well, Chinese citizens are vulnerable to the practices of traffickers who move individuals illegally around the world.

Child Labor In Latin America: Poverty As Cause And Effect, Michaelle Tauson Jan 2009

Child Labor In Latin America: Poverty As Cause And Effect, Michaelle Tauson

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Throughout much of the developing world, children make up an alarming portion of the workforce. These children are robbed of their childhood in order to provide economic supplementation to their families. According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), 5.7 million children in Latin America participate in the regional workforce (2006). It is a common misconception that children, who do not participate in the formal workforce, are not child laborers. However, the ILO defines child labor as any work that is detrimental to a child’s well-being or interferes with a child’s education. Due to the many categories and classifications of child …

Violated: Women’S Human Rights In Sub-Saharan Africa, Kathryn Birdwell Wester

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Despite the region’s diversity, its female inhabitants largely share experiences of sexual discrimination and abuse, intimate violence, political marginalization, and economic deprivation.
