Heraclio Bernal: Bandit Citizen, Amy Robinson
Decimonónica
Shortly after Heraclio Bernal’s much awaited defeat to federal forces in 1888, the Governor of Sinaloa, Francisco Cañedo, referred to the state’s famous outlaw as “el bandido ciudadano” (El Nacional, 10 Jan. 1888).1 The Mexico City newspaper El Nacional promptly registered their disapproval:

Agricultural Crisis And Biological Well-Being In Mexico, 1730-1835, Amilcar Challú
Agricultural Crisis And Biological Well-Being In Mexico, 1730-1835, Amilcar Challú
History Faculty Publications
The article examines how adverse climatic conditions and high food prices influenced the opportunities of peasants in pre-industrial Mexico between 1730 and 1835. Particular attention is paid to data of soldier heights, global climate events, warm-season tree growth, and real food prices to determine how these factors may have affected urban and rural populations. Declines were seen in the general standard of living and average height, while the cost of food increased. It is argued that distribution and acquisition of food has an equal influence on biological well-being as the availability of food at any specific given time.

Islam : Between Message And History, Abdelmadjid Charfi, Abdou Filali-Ansary, Sikeena Karmali Ahmed, David Bond
In Translation: Modern Muslim Thinkers
This book could easily be called ‘A Guide for the Modern Muslim’, someone for whom the sentiments of his or her ancestors resonate but who cannot accept the canonised formulas of a prescriptive education.
Charfi spells out what for him is the essential message of Islam, followed by a history of its unfolding through the person of the Prophet Muhammad, whom he perceives as a visionary seeking to change the ideals, attitudes and behaviours of the society in which he lived. Charfi delineates the message and its history as two separate elements, conflated by tradition.
Charfi confronts with great lucidity …

Muslim Civilisations Abstracts
Over the past 150 years, numerous encyclopaedias have been produced on Muslim civilisations, both by Muslims and non-Muslims, with different approaches to the organisation of knowledge and understanding of Muslim beliefs, cultures and societies. Access to and knowledge of these reference works and databases have until now been hindered by language barriers. The first volume in the MCA series seeks to overcome this obstacle by presenting material in three languages: English, Arabic and Turkish.
This is a unique reference catalogue containing 200 annotated bibliographies and abstracts of encyclopaedias published during the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Brazilian Legal Education: Curricular Reform That Goes Further Without Going Beyond, Roberto Fragale Filho
Brazilian Legal Education: Curricular Reform That Goes Further Without Going Beyond, Roberto Fragale Filho
Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy
Brazilian legal education is engaged since 1994 in a long and inconclusive process of curriculum reform in which the Brazilian Bar Association (Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil) has been one of its greatest players. The transformations undertaken in legal education in the last two decades, were buoyed by three things: (a) the redemocratization of the country, completed in 1988 with the promulgation of the new Constitution, (b) the expansion of higher education, which resulted in a amount of more than half of a million law students, and (c) the protection of interests of the lawyers’ corporation, even though it has …

Outdoor Experiences And Environmental Awareness, Anthony Romano
Honors Capstones
The purpose of this research project is to assess the connection between levels of outdoor experience and views of environmental issues among NIU students. A spatial component of this study seeks to assess whether rural or urban backgrounds influence levels of outdoor experiences and attitudes toward the environment. A combination of personal qualitative interviews and a quantitative survey were used to collect data on participants’ background, level of outdoor activity participation, and views on the environment. A statistical analysis of the survey data was conducted and results indicated that rural participants were far more likely to participate in outdoor activities …

Walkout: The Footsteps Of Latino Youth Activism, Marta Galvan
Walkout: The Footsteps Of Latino Youth Activism, Marta Galvan
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
This qualitative study analyzes contemporary social action through the lens of Latino youth activism. A total of 11 people including Latino student demonstrators and non-demonstrators and teachers/administrators all shared their experiences and perspectives concerning the 2006 Latino youth immigration reform walkout that took place at a local high school. It was found that Latino youth secretly coordinated a walkout and executed it. Escorted by police they marched in the streets, recruited other students along the way, attended a rally, and were bused back to campus afterward. Demonstrators were both criticized and praised for their actions by peers and teachers/administrators. While …

The Tadpole Of Hypsiboas Atlanticus (Anura, Hylidae) From Northeastern Brazil, Filipe A. C. Do Nascimento, Marcelo G. De Lima, Gabriel O. Skuk, Rafael O. De Sá
Biology Faculty Publications
The tadpole of Hypsiboas atlanticus (Caramaschi & Velosa, 1996) is described from the municipality of Maceió, State of Alagoas, Brazil. At stage 36 the larvae have an overall elliptical body in lateral and dorsal views, oral disc anteroventral, spiracular tube sinistral, and labial tooth row formula 2(1,2)/3(1). The oral disc is surrounded, almost completely (anterior medial gap present) by a single row of marginal papillae. Described tadpoles of the H. punctatus species group can be differentiated by a combined disc oral features. Additional descriptions of H. punctatus (Schneider, 1799) tadpoles from populations throughout South America may be helpful in determining …

Theft As ‘Involuntary Gifting’ Among The Tacana Of Northern Bolivia, Laura A. Bathurst
School of International Studies Faculty Articles
It has been well established in the anthropological literature that reciprocity, in its various cultural forms, is simultaneously produced by and productive of social relationships; it both comments upon social relationships and plays a role in creating them. However, this has generally been demonstrated using positive forms of reciprocity. In this paper I examine how theft, as a form of negative reciprocity, fit with a wider set of positive reciprocal obligations among the Tacana in northeastern Bolivia in 2001-2002. Theft, I argue, was part of a coherent cultural system in which a material basis, social norms, and values and beliefs …

An Examination Of Consumer Experience And Relative Effects On Consumer Values, Andrew Walls
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the ever changing business climate, the service sector has become a major focus of attention. One key aspect of this competitive environment is the effort of many businesses to differentiate themselves by creating unique customer experiences that accompany their products and services. The challenge to creating memorable consumer experiences is the proper identification of specific characteristics that influence experiences and gaining better understanding of how these impact consumers perceived values. To this end, this study attempted to develop a model that identifies influencing dimensions of consumer experiences and investigates the composition of consumer experiences and the relative outcome on …
