Representations Of Women In The Work Of Gustave Flaubert And Leo Tolstoy, Jillian Horowitz Jan 2009

Representations Of Women In The Work Of Gustave Flaubert And Leo Tolstoy, Jillian Horowitz

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines works by two recognized masters of Realist fiction, Gustave Flaubert and Leo Tolstoy, in light of contemporary feminist theories. The purpose of this thesis is twofold: to examine both the canonical novels and lesser-known short stories of these Realist writers and to consider a range of feminist approaches to literature. The first chapter reads Flaubert's short story "A Simple Heart" ("Un Coeur Simple") (1877) in conjunction with Gayatri C. Spivak and post-colonial, post-modernist theory. The second chapter examines Leo Tolstoy's novella "Family Happiness" (1859) through the lens of ecofeminism, using Sherry B. Ortner's essay "Is Female to …

The 1.5 Generation Of The Bosnian Diaspora, Jennifer H. Lelaurin Jan 2009

The 1.5 Generation Of The Bosnian Diaspora, Jennifer H. Lelaurin

Theses & ETDs

Many immigrant and refugee studies address issues related to the 1st and 2nd generations of immigrants without accounting for individuals who migrate as children, known as the 1.5 generation. This thesis explores the topics of acculturation, identity, ethnic enclaves and family dynamics in relation to the 1.5 generation through semi-structured interviews with three female 1.5 generation Bosnian refugees living in St. Louis, Missouri. The research presented in this study suggests that members of the 1.5 generation may have acculturation experiences, identity formation processes, and outcomes distinct from the 1st and 2nd generations of immigrants. Analysis of this case study, in …

Smiling Inside: Routinization, Representation, And Rat Race, Eric Jakobsen Jan 2009

Smiling Inside: Routinization, Representation, And Rat Race, Eric Jakobsen

Theses & ETDs

While theme park characters are recognized throughout the world, the people playing them remain largely hidden due to express corporate policies. This thesis investigates emotional labor, representation, routinization, and other social issues at play in theme park work. These issues are addressed in an analysis of informal interviews conducted with theme park workers and also in a theatrical piece that derives most of its text from the same interviews and was created using techniques of Anna Deavere Smith, Tadashi Suzuki, and Anne Bogart/SITI Company. The final piece presents the workers' stories and experiences, while simultaneously engaging the difficult issues surrounding …

Constructing A Public Archaeology At Historic Spanish Point In Osprey, Florida, Steven Garte-Wolf Jan 2009

Constructing A Public Archaeology At Historic Spanish Point In Osprey, Florida, Steven Garte-Wolf

Theses & ETDs

In this thesis, I explore Historic Spanish Point, an outdoor archaeology site in Osprey, Florida for its unique and relevant importance to Florida's history and its relatively few residents of Sarasota visit the site or know of its existence or importance, while their children are being educated as to its importance as an archaeology site through Sarasota County's social studies curriculum. The notion that archaeology, and thus Historic Spanish Point, is more important to children than to adults is evident of a larger plight in archaeological discourse. While particular evidence exists at Historic Spanish Point for this problem, I use …

Soteriology As A Gift System: Religious Practice Among The First Tibetan Buddhist Nun Scholars, Junmei Georgia Kashnig Jan 2009

Soteriology As A Gift System: Religious Practice Among The First Tibetan Buddhist Nun Scholars, Junmei Georgia Kashnig

Theses & ETDs

This thesis is an ethnography of a small community of Tibetan Buddhist nuns, primarily from ethnically Tibetan Himalayan villages within the nation-state of India, who are among the first group of Tibetan Buddhist nuns to receive a scholastic education. My data is the result of three months of fieldwork involving participant-observation and both formal and informal interviews. I argue that the nuns maintain a position of "soteriological inclusiveness" regarding the status of women, which implies soteriological but not social equality. I employ theory on "the gift" in the modern world to discuss the nuns' religious practice, where "habituation," is a …

Diving Into A Mirror Of Light: A Diachronic Exploration Of Cenotes, Jessica Anne Wheeler Jan 2009

Diving Into A Mirror Of Light: A Diachronic Exploration Of Cenotes, Jessica Anne Wheeler

Theses & ETDs

According to Miriam Kahn, space has been “relegated to a static physical backdrop, a kind of stage-setting removed from human action and interaction” (2000: 8). Rather than taking this avenue, I attempt to examine cenotes as specific settings of human action and interaction. This thesis attempts to deconstruct the powerful concepts of place imposed by outsiders and the perspectives of places held by their inhabitants. My thesis examines uses, perceptions, and conceptions of cenotes during the prehispanic period and contemporarily. In order to do this, I synthesize and interpret the material deposits from caves and cenotes dating to the prehispanic …

An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Story And Resilience, Erica Schoon Jan 2009

An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Story And Resilience, Erica Schoon

Theses & ETDs

This thesis uses Robert Coles's Children of Crisis series as a starting point for examining the dynamic relationship between the concepts of story and psychological resilience in the United States. I discuss Coles's treatment of young people in crisis in the 1960s and 1970s and the parallel situations in the US today. Using studies from a broad range of disciplines and portraits of children from Coles's books, this thesis demonstrates the dynamic relationship between story and resilience by exploring the representation of resilience in published or public stories, as well as the influence of story on resilience. I detail the …

Comparing Health Systems: Hiv/Aids In India And The United States, Anita V. Tambay Jan 2009

Comparing Health Systems: Hiv/Aids In India And The United States, Anita V. Tambay

Theses & ETDs

Public health systems function in ensuring the health needs of a population are met, focusing particularly on the prevention of ill health. Due to India’s enormous population, and the resultant strain on its resources, India’s public health system has proved inadequate. In the coming years, the Indian government should shift its focus towards addressing primary health care needs such as nutrition and prenatal care. In the US, though health standards are relatively high, disparities in health indicators can be seen across minority populations. These disparities indicate public health efforts are not reaching at-risk populations. Additionally, both India and the US …

Was Bedeutet Bio Fur Euch? Exploring Collaborative Research On A Demeter Farm In Germany, Lee Ellen Reed Jan 2009

Was Bedeutet Bio Fur Euch? Exploring Collaborative Research On A Demeter Farm In Germany, Lee Ellen Reed

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores the developing literature on collaboration by elucidatating the theoretical underpinnings of contemporary collaboration in anthropology and by placing collaboration on a spectrum—ultimately demonstrating the benefits of explicitly collaborative research within anthropology. The case study is ethnographic collaboration conducted on a Demeter-certified, organic farm in Germany in the summer of 2008. Through photograph-centered focus-group conversations, participants (including myself) discussed issues broadly related to organic agriculture in Germany. The thesis itself focuses on two of the prominent themes which developed through the research: the contemporary ambiguity of the term "organic" (or "BIO" as it is called in Germany), and …

To Hell House And Back: Theatre As Evangelical Outreach, Suzanne Mooney Jan 2009

To Hell House And Back: Theatre As Evangelical Outreach, Suzanne Mooney

Theses & ETDs

Advancing a tradition started by Jerry Falwell in 1972, in 1996 Pastor Keenan Roberts of New Destiny Christian Center in Colorado began selling Hell House Outreach Kits to interested church groups. Since then, thousands of Hell Houses—morality plays depicting sinful behavior in an appropriation of the haunted house format--have been staged all over the country, many using Pastor Keenan's script. I purchased the script, and in January of 2009 staged “Interactive Hell House Spectacular” on the campus of New College of Florida. I combined Pastor Keenan's material with elements of Brecht's alienation effect in order to create a different spectacle …

Evolving Eden, Sharon L. Kennedy Jan 2009

Evolving Eden, Sharon L. Kennedy

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

Eden is an idealized place where one experiences happiness, harmony and a sense of timelessness. While some believe this can only be experienced after death, others are convinced that the only Eden is the one we currently inhabit and therefore good stewardship is needed in order to sustain it. Photographers have historically captured our evolving planet and have brought to light its beauty as well as its destruction due to human intervention.

The artists in Evolving Eden address the much-discussed topic of the environment and our relationship with our surroundings, using three distinct approaches. While Arno Rafael Minkkinen's spiritual images …

Effects Of Case-Based Learning On Preservice Secondary Teachers’ Multicultural Attitudes: A Mixed Methods Study, Kathryn Lee, Emily Summers, Rubén Garza Jan 2009

Effects Of Case-Based Learning On Preservice Secondary Teachers’ Multicultural Attitudes: A Mixed Methods Study, Kathryn Lee, Emily Summers, Rubén Garza

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

As our society changes, so must our teacher education practices. In the past decade, the Southwestern U.S. has been transforming into a majority minority region (U.S. Census Bureau 2005), which must in turn reframe the underpinnings of teacher education in this area of our country. As teacher educators, we have known that many preservice teachers lagged in their preparedness to teach students who are culturally, ethnically, and linguistically different from themselves. Teacher education increasingly is being criticized as having inabilities to instruct teacher candidates in ways that produce greater K-12 student learning; diversity awareness will be a cornerstone if we …

Theory, Research & Practice Of A Comprehensive Teen Sexuality Education Curriculum, Dawn M. Bowker Jan 2009

Theory, Research & Practice Of A Comprehensive Teen Sexuality Education Curriculum, Dawn M. Bowker

Theses and Graduate Projects

Rates of sexually transmitted disease (STD), teen pregnancy, and teen births are higher in the United States than in most other industrialized countries (Kohler, 2008; Manhart, 2006; Teitelman, 2004; Terry-Humen, 2006). Five years ago, a Christian based, sexuality retreat curriculum was initiated that focused on teen knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about sexuality. The developmentally appropriate curriculum promoted an increased awareness of self and issues influencing sexuality. The goal was to create a common language and a better understanding of the way adolescent males and females think and behave in matters of sexuality. This paper presents an evaluative retrospective analysis of …

Fire Returns To Southern Appalachian Forests, Elise Lequire Jan 2009

Fire Returns To Southern Appalachian Forests, Elise Lequire

Joint Fire Science Program Briefs (2007-2012)

In the Daniel Boone National Forest (DBNF) in eastern Kentucky, controlled experiments are shedding light on the role of fi re in meeting an urgent need: encouraging regeneration of oak in the forest. Though mature oak dominates the canopy in much of the forest, competition from species that tolerate shade has jeopardized the ability of oak to successfully regenerate. Since 1995, researchers have been collaborating with Forest Service managers, with funding from the Joint Fire Science Program (JFSP), to document the multiple effects of prescribed fi re on canopy opening, seedling recruitment, damage to mature trees, fuel loading, and effects …

Law And The Emotive Avatar, Llewellyn J. Gibbons Jan 2009

Law And The Emotive Avatar, Llewellyn J. Gibbons

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

The barriers between fantasy and reality in virtual worlds are becoming increasingly permeable. There is a rhetorical need among some legal scholars to distinguish between a law of virtual worlds or concepts of net-sovereignty and the so-called real world. These metaphorical distinctions are unhelpful and confuse the issues as to exactly what is being regulated. A more productive line of analysis is to consider the avatar as an extension of the individual or an agent of the individual in virtual spaces and then to shift the focus of analysis away from the avatar and back to the individual because it …

Deranged Loners And Demented Outsiders? Therapeutic News Frames Of Presidential Assassination Attempts, 1973-2001, Kristen Hoerl, D. L. Cloud, S. E. Jarvis Jan 2009

Deranged Loners And Demented Outsiders? Therapeutic News Frames Of Presidential Assassination Attempts, 1973-2001, Kristen Hoerl, D. L. Cloud, S. E. Jarvis

Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication

There were 7 assassination attempts on U.S. presidents between 1973 and 2001. In this article, we critically examine coverage of each attack in The New York Times and The Washington Post, describing how the coverage employs therapeutic discourse frames that position the president as vulnerable and portray the attackers as lonely and demented outsiders. Noticing contradictions in this pattern, we also identify counterframes, including those acknowledging the political motivations of the assassins, the diminished public sphere that is a context for those actions, and the contradictions in a legal system that denies the insanity pleas of those framed so extensively …
