Disciplining Queer, Ian Barnard Jan 2009

Disciplining Queer, Ian Barnard

English Faculty Articles and Research

This article analyzes a particular set of disciplinings by students and colleagues that coalesced around my teaching of a university course in ‘Queer Theory.’ I use these regulatory discourses and practices as a springboard to investigate how academic and other disciplines (English, in particular) enable and reproduce certain stylizations, epistemologies, and methodologies, and what they implicitly and violently conceal and demonize; how style functions as politics and what the politics of style are; how queerness—queer inquiry and intervention, queer methodologies and epistemologies, queer activisms and insubordinations—might activate, exacerbate, and expose some of these questions and mechanisms. The form of the …

Adding Soft-Skills To The Hard Target Of Adequacy: The Case For Rearticulation Based On A Multifocal Analysis, Robert C. Knoeppel, Curtis A. Brewer, Jane Clark Lindle, Patricia F. First Jan 2009

Adding Soft-Skills To The Hard Target Of Adequacy: The Case For Rearticulation Based On A Multifocal Analysis, Robert C. Knoeppel, Curtis A. Brewer, Jane Clark Lindle, Patricia F. First

Publications

The purpose of this study is to expand the definition of adequacy by adding soft skills as a measure of school productivity. The singular focus on academic standards inherent in education policy has prevented scholars from seeing the concept of adequacy through myriad perspectives and has contributed to a resegregation of schools. Education policy includes legal, historical, and political perspectives; research inquiries must accommodate these multiple foci. This study made use of multifocal analysis to investigate the development of the concept of adequacy in South Carolina. Conclusions suggest an expanded definition of adequacy has potential for addressing school financing policy, …

The Role Of Historical-Cultural Formations Within World-Systems Analysis: Reframing The Analysis Of Biomedicine In East Africa, David Baronov Jan 2009

The Role Of Historical-Cultural Formations Within World-Systems Analysis: Reframing The Analysis Of Biomedicine In East Africa, David Baronov

Sociology Faculty/Staff Publications

This essay introduces a novel analytical concept for world-systems analysis, historical-cultural formations, for the purpose of analyzing reciprocal global cultural exchanges across the capitalist world-system. This is done through four basic procedures. First, the perspective of world-systems analysis is adopted for the purpose of analyzing biomedicine in world-historical context and biomedicine itself is re-conceptualized as a historical-cultural formation across a single capitalist world-system. Second, in order to conceptually incorporate historical-cultural formations, the basic analytical framework of world-systems analysis is expanded to include cultural forms as integral features of the capitalist world-system, parallel with economic and political structures. Third, biomedicine is …

A Procedure To Correct Proxy-Reported Weight In The National Health Interview Survey, 1976-2002, Eric N. Reither, Rebecca L. Utz Jan 2009

A Procedure To Correct Proxy-Reported Weight In The National Health Interview Survey, 1976-2002, Eric N. Reither, Rebecca L. Utz

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Background

Data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) show a larger-than-expected increase in mean BMI between 1996 and 1997. Proxy-reports of height and weight were discontinued as part of the 1997 NHIS redesign, suggesting that the sharp increase between 1996 and 1997 may be artifactual.

Methods

We merged NHIS data from 1976–2002 into a single database consisting of approximately 1.7 million adults aged 18 and over. The analysis consisted of two parts: First, we estimated the magnitude of BMI differences by reporting status (i.e., self-reported versus proxy-reported height and weight). Second, we developed a procedure to correct biases in …

Virtual Kinoeye: Kinetic Camera, Machinima, And Virtual Subjectivity In Second Life, Lori Landay Jan 2009

Virtual Kinoeye: Kinetic Camera, Machinima, And Virtual Subjectivity In Second Life, Lori Landay

The Journal of e-Media Studies

The "virtual kino-eye" of the synthetic camera in a virtual world like Second Life not only realizes the kinetic possibilities imagined by Dziga Vertov for making "machinima" (digital video captured in a virtual world or 3-d game environment), but also is one of the ways through which virtual subjectivity is constructed. Virtual subjectivity is a mode of first-person experience in a virtual world that is founded on a fusion of visual and metaphoric point of view, shaped through "self-design" of the avatar and environment, reinforced and extended through social interaction, known through the avatar body's actions and movements in virtual …

Folklore and the Internet is a pioneering examination of the folkloric qualities of the World Wide Web, e-mail, and related digital media. It shows that folk culture, sustained by a new and evolving vernacular, has been a key, since the Internetýs beginnings, to language, practice, and interaction online. Users of many sorts continue to develop the Internet as a significant medium for generating, transmitting, documenting, and preserving folklore. In a set of new, insightful essays, contributors Trevor J. Blank, Simon J. Bronner, Robert Dobler, Russell Frank, Gregory Hansen, Robert Glenn Howard, Lynne S. Mea Familia: Ethnic Burial Identifiers In St. Michael's Cemetery, Pensacola, Florida, Amy Giroux Jan 2009

Mea Familia: Ethnic Burial Identifiers In St. Michael's Cemetery, Pensacola, Florida, Amy Giroux

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Grave markers from St. Michael'ss Cemetery in Pensacola, Florida, were studied for evidence of ethnicity and acculturation. The 1,447 grave markers dating from 1870 to 1939 were used to test two hypotheses: 1) the grave markers for ethnic groups represented in the cemetery during the project's time period have identifiable sets of burial attributes; and 2) changes in the visible ethnic attribute sets show evidence of the acculturation of ethnic groups over time. Physical attributes pertaining to grave markers, and personal characteristics (e.g. sex, age) for the individuals inscribed upon the markers were collected for analysis. Historical sources were used …

The Dawn Of The "Chaotic Account": Horatio Hale’S Australia Notebook And The Development Of Anthropologists’ Field Notes, Tom Belton Jan 2009

The Dawn Of The "Chaotic Account": Horatio Hale’S Australia Notebook And The Development Of Anthropologists’ Field Notes, Tom Belton

Western Libraries Publications

This paper proposes an archival analysis of notebooks, and their relationships to other parts of personal archives (e.g. journals or diaries). The bulk of the paper is an analysis of the historical development of a particular genre of notebooks: anthropological field notes, “chaotic accounts”, as Branislaw Manilnowski called them, based largely on observation. It provides a review of anthropologists’ own recent literature on the subject, and a short case study of a mid nineteenth century notebook of the American explorer/ethnographer Horatio Hale that serves as an example of one seed out of which anthropological field notes grew.

Apocalypse In Anime: Shifting Boundaries Of Human Technology Interface, Pauline Morris Jan 2009

Apocalypse In Anime: Shifting Boundaries Of Human Technology Interface, Pauline Morris

Digitized Theses

Anime is the definitive postmodern genre through which to portray apocalyptic narratives as it provides an imaginative liminal site that transcends any specific culture and ethnicity, and through which global concerns can be investigated. The study of apocalypse in selected anime - Japanese animated film and television - is beneficial at the outset o f the 21st century when we are beset with catastrophes both ecological and technological that are recognizably manufactured by some degree of human involvement. This examination is pertinent to disciplines as diverse as communications, cultural theory, anthropology, film, cyborg studies, Asian studies, and English literature. The …

Contested Histories And Identities: Romani Refugees In Toronto, Julianna Calder Butler Jan 2009

Contested Histories And Identities: Romani Refugees In Toronto, Julianna Calder Butler

Digitized Theses

This thesis examines the larger themes and processes involved in identity reconstructions, and the appropriation of labels and categories at various levels as part of a struggle by the Roma against their marginalization and persecution. Through a focus on several significant sites of negotiation and contestation where Romani actors encounter and interface with hegemonic institutions and discourses, including current Canadian immigration policies and media coverage, I propose that “identities” invoke historical narratives, whether individual or collective, and are used in diverse ways. This research on the Roma is also useful in understanding the experiences of other refugees and minorities when …

Body Size Indicators And The Examination Of Stress From A Growth And Develoment Perspective: A New Method Of Bioarchaeological Assessment, Amy B. Scott Jan 2009

Body Size Indicators And The Examination Of Stress From A Growth And Develoment Perspective: A New Method Of Bioarchaeological Assessment, Amy B. Scott

Digitized Theses

The purpose o f this thesis research is to introduce a new method to examine

childhood stress episodes from adult skeletal remains. Through the use of indicators of adult body size and regression analysis, stress patterns were analyzed in two climatically different populations, the Sadlermiut Inuit of Southampton Island and the Sacred Heart Cemetery population from southwestern Ontario. By comparing body size indicators to one another in sequential order, it was possible to assess at what time during growth and development that certain individuals deviated from their normal growth patterns and experienced stress. As expected, the Sadlermiut and Sacred Heart …

The Rusty Years: Seniors’ Social Networking In Retirement, Michelle P. West Jan 2009

The Rusty Years: Seniors’ Social Networking In Retirement, Michelle P. West

Digitized Theses

This thesis investigates how retirees in the Greater Toronto Area experienced the transition from work to retirement and how they dealt with the changes that they experienced. In particular, this work considers how individuals’ social networks are altered during the process of retirement and how individuals develop new social networks in order to adjust to these alterations. Anthropological methods of inquiry—participant- observation, individual interviews, and focus groups—were used to explore these phenomena. The results of this study reveal how recreational centers for seniors, and the programs offered at these centers, help retirees connect to their peers and their communities and …

Everyday Encounters Between The Piaroa Of Alto Carinagua And The Venezuelan State, Christian Espanol Jan 2009

Everyday Encounters Between The Piaroa Of Alto Carinagua And The Venezuelan State, Christian Espanol

Digitized Theses

This thesis examines the everyday life of the Piaroa people of Alto Carinagua, an Amerindian village in Venezuelan Amazonia, and their interactions with Venezuelan state officials and institutions. It provides ethnographic information about the Piaroa and explores the processes of state formation of the Venezuelan modern state as well as the integration of the Venezuelan Amazonian region to the national territory, and analyzes the everyday interactions between the Piaroa and the state which on occasions can fuse these two entities in complex ways. I argue that the Piaroa of Alto Carinagua are involved in processes of social and cosmological transformations …

From Mining Widows To Prayer Mamas: Women, Christianity And Modernity In A Papua New Guinea Village, Christina Marie Gordon Jan 2009

From Mining Widows To Prayer Mamas: Women, Christianity And Modernity In A Papua New Guinea Village, Christina Marie Gordon

Digitized Theses

This thesis is based on an ethnographic research project that explores the relationship between charismatic women and Christianity in Telefolmin, Papua New Guinea, and sheds light on issues surrounding gender and the politics of modernity. As

fewer cash remittances come to the village as the nearby Ok Tedi mine moves towards closure, and as more men leave the village in search of money, women are taking on the everyday jobs that were once the responsibility of men. When these facets of labor migration come together, what one is left with is an increasing feminization o f subsistence, which increases women’s …

When Actual Meets Virtual: Values, Perceptions And Experiences In World Of Warcraft, Caroline Whippey Jan 2009

When Actual Meets Virtual: Values, Perceptions And Experiences In World Of Warcraft, Caroline Whippey

Digitized Theses

World ofWarcraft, a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, is a rich, complex virtual world where people play and interact without leaving their physical space. This thesis examines the ways in which World of Warcraft players bring their values, perceptions, and experiences into the game space through several different avenues: gender, sexuality, sex, race, ethnicity, and multinationalism. I discuss how this affects players experience of the game and community, as well as how it influences player identity. Through their behavioural assumptions and actions, players bring aspects of each of the listed avenues into the game, which changes the way interactions …

Women In A Malagasy Sapphire Mining Community: A Case Of Interactive Learning, Alexis R. Chapeskie

Digitized Theses

This thesis presents original ethnographic data on women in Ambondromifehy and reflects the need for new ways to incorporate discussions of conceptual issues such as the use of comparison in anthropology, methodology, and the application of theoretical conceptualizations, into discussions of the ethnographic data collected in the field. The ethnographic data on women in a small-scale mining community in northern Madagascar is the first study in this region on women living in this community. This original ethnographic data includes Interactive Ethnographies and a website, which both feature videos as well as photographs obtained using two different photographic methods (researcher photographs …

Mysteries Of The Dead: A Taphonomic Analysis Of The Skeletal Remains From The Peruvian Highland Sites Of Marcahuamachuco And Cerro Amaru, Sheryl A. Spigelski Jan 2009

Mysteries Of The Dead: A Taphonomic Analysis Of The Skeletal Remains From The Peruvian Highland Sites Of Marcahuamachuco And Cerro Amaru, Sheryl A. Spigelski

Digitized Theses

This thesis examines the taphonomic changes on skeletal material recovered from the ancient sites of Marcahuamachuco and Cerro Amaru by the Huamachuco Archaeological Project in the 1980s. The remains were recovered from three different burial contexts: (1) Wall niches; (2) Underneath the Castillo; and (3) Inside a Mausoleum. The human skeletal samples recovered from inside the walls of niched halls at Marcahuamachuco are from males and females of average height, ranging in age from juvenile to older adult. Taphonomically, the remains exhibit evidence of extreme water damage, rodent gnawing and human modification consistent with burial preparation, mummification and possibly ancestor …
