"‘A Philosophical Shock’: Foucault’S Reading Of Heidegger And Nietzsche." In: C. G. Prado, Ed., Foucault’S Legacy (London: Continuum, 2009), Pp. 19-41., Babette Babich Jan 2009

"‘A Philosophical Shock’: Foucault’S Reading Of Heidegger And Nietzsche." In: C. G. Prado, Ed., Foucault’S Legacy (London: Continuum, 2009), Pp. 19-41., Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

Although there is no lack of efforts to read Foucault and Nietzsche together or indeed to align Foucault and Heidegger, Foucault scholarship overall tends to be split on these same terms. The author argues that the opposition is misleading for the complicated reason that Foucault’s Heidegger can only be understood on Nietzschean terms while and at the same time, Foucault’s Nietzsche only takes place by way of Heidegger albeit (and this point simply cannot be overemphasized) a very Frencophone reading of Heidegger.

Field Research Experience: Earth Science And Iowa Core Curriculum, Michael Goudy Jan 2009

Field Research Experience: Earth Science And Iowa Core Curriculum, Michael Goudy

Graduate Research Papers

Due to the retirement of the former earth science teacher I was given the opportunity to take over the earth science elective classes. Oskaloosa Senior High School is based on a trimester school year. The third trimester earth science course was formerly called Wilderness Adventures. I renamed the course as Field Research Experience. This added greater value due to emphasis on more science skills and possible career application. As an active outdoorsman and former Boy Scout leader I was excited to incorporate the skills needed to enjoy outdoor recreation into those required of persons involved in doing scientific field research.

When The Personal Becomes Professional: Surveillances Of A Professor's Eating Disorder Personae, April Chatham-Carpeneter Jan 2009

When The Personal Becomes Professional: Surveillances Of A Professor's Eating Disorder Personae, April Chatham-Carpeneter

Iowa Journal of Communication

Four personae are presented as ways in which I act out my role as a professor studying eating disorders: (a) a former anorexic, (b) a seasoned professor, (c) a concerned, yet controlled, mother, and (d) a partner of my eating disorder. Using autoethnography, I present the internal wrestling match I go through on what to expose about myself as a scholar. In doing so, I experience a surveillance type of watching from various audience members, including myself, and this puts the anorexia back in my face again as a possible option. I reveal the myth of controlling one's research or …

A Family Affair: A Study Of A Family Owned And Operated Business, Jessica Palmer Jan 2009

A Family Affair: A Study Of A Family Owned And Operated Business, Jessica Palmer

Iowa Journal of Communication

Recently there has been an increase in research focusing on family owned businesses. This research has focused on defining the family firm, what differentiates it from other businesses, and the importance of planning for succession. Informed by the research, this paper explores one small family-owned-and-operated wholesale plumbing business in the Midwest. Three family members were interviewed in order to understand how they came to work in the family business, how the family is viewed within the company, and how they plan for succession. The results indicate that planning for succession is difficult for family businesses, yet crucial to their survival …

Conjunction And Flow: The Gendered Temporalities Of (Media) Disaster, Kumkum Sangari Jan 2009

Conjunction And Flow: The Gendered Temporalities Of (Media) Disaster, Kumkum Sangari

The Journal of e-Media Studies

Catastrophe and Television in the Wake of Katrina: Working through the shift in the ideological parameters of the television form from conjunction to flow, as suggested in Raymond Williams' essays, the author argues that conjunction is still available and can denaturalize the flow form as a determinate paradigm of narrative incoherence and "full" subsumption. The argument of the essay traverses the formal, spatial and regional coordinates of the flow form, especially in disaster reportage on BBC World and the Indian media, which recompose imperial "worlds" and recast resistant gendered agencies. The essay proposes that flow can congeal into what the …

Presence And Voice: Understanding The Tensions Over The American Church's Relationship To Its Culture Through The Writings Of Origen, Chrysostom And Augustine, Henry Curtis Mcdaniel Jan 2009

Presence And Voice: Understanding The Tensions Over The American Church's Relationship To Its Culture Through The Writings Of Origen, Chrysostom And Augustine, Henry Curtis Mcdaniel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In light of the perceived and demonstrable decline of the church's presence and voice in American culture, this dissertation proposes to examine and to discuss the dynamic viewpoints and tensions within the church over her presence and voice in the American culture by examining the various interpretations over the rhetoric of Christianization in the Roman Empire and how those viewpoints surface in the positions of Origen, Chrysostom and Augustine. The objective of this approach is to continue the discussion first articulated by H. Richard Niebuhr's 1951 work, Christ and Culture, by showing that the way one understands the rhetoric of …

On Identity: An Alternative View, Guo-Ming Chen Jan 2009

On Identity: An Alternative View, Guo-Ming Chen

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

“Identity” has become a magic word in the disciplines of social sciences and humanities, in which, due to the impact of globalization, scholars examine the concept from different perspectives, including personal, intergroup, cultural, critical, and postcolonial approaches. Unfortunately, the plethora of research seems to further obscure and enigmatize the meaning and nature of identity, and worse, advocates of the importance of establishing, authenticating, or negotiating one’s own identity seems to encourage people to tightly hold their own identity. Like a cocoon, this can weave a stronghold, preventing a person from penetrating into the identity of others. Facing this dilemma on …

From Pinochet To Rumsfeld: Universal Jurisdiction In Europe 1998-2008, Wolfgang Kaleck Jan 2009

From Pinochet To Rumsfeld: Universal Jurisdiction In Europe 1998-2008, Wolfgang Kaleck

Michigan Journal of International Law

This Essay provides a survey of more than fifty universal jurisdiction proceedings in European courts and illustrates that universal jurisdiction is no longer a seldom-used theoretical concept, but a widespread practice. However, it is a practice that faces a number legal and practical obstacles identified here. Similar difficulties are encountered in other mechanisms used to combat impunity, including territorial and personality jurisdiction, state accountability at the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR), and civil litigation in the United States. The Essay then begins an evaluation of the last ten years of universal …

Digging Paradise: Historical And Archeological Miscellany Of The U.S. Virgin Islands, Kenneth Baumgardt

The Bridge

During the 1980's and 1990's, the firm of MAAR Associates of Newark, Delaware, conducted more than thirty archeological investigations of the prehistoric sites and Danish Plantations of the U. S. Virgin Islands. These studies were conducted to fulfill the requirements of the National Historic Preservation Act prior to proposed hotel construction there. However, after the islands were devastated by Hurricane Hugo in 1987, many of these projects were never built. Nonetheless, a great volume of information about the history and prehistory of the Virgin Islands was collected. This study will provide a compilation of some of the discoveries made during …

Anthropology 3 - 7 Truths About Creation, Don Fanning

Bible Doctrines

Bible Doctrines are divided up into nine major categories for connivence. This will be a resource tool for the Bible teacher who can project an image directly from his computer in PowerPoint. A few related topics to the main doctrine are occasionally added for more clarity. The perspective of the author is a firm conviction in the authority and infallibility of God's written Word as the basis for all doctrines.
