Landscape Genomics And Biased Fst Approaches Reveal Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms Under Selection In Goat Breeds Of North-East Mediterranean, Lorraine Pariset, Stephane Joost, Paolo Ajmone Marsan, Alessio Valentini, Econogene Consortium Feb 2009

Landscape Genomics And Biased Fst Approaches Reveal Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms Under Selection In Goat Breeds Of North-East Mediterranean, Lorraine Pariset, Stephane Joost, Paolo Ajmone Marsan, Alessio Valentini, Econogene Consortium

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: In this study we compare outlier loci detected using a Fst based method with those identified by a recently described method based on spatial analysis (SAM). We tested a panel of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) previously genotyped in individuals of goat breeds of southern areas of the Mediterranean basin (Italy, Greece and Albania). We evaluate how the SAM method performs with SNPs, which are increasingly employed due to their high number, low cost and easy of scoring.

Results: The combined use of the two outlier detection approaches, never tested before using SNP polymorphisms, resulted in the …

Protecting Against Plunder: The United States And The International Efforts Against Looting Of Antiquities, Asif Efrat Feb 2009

Protecting Against Plunder: The United States And The International Efforts Against Looting Of Antiquities, Asif Efrat

Cornell Law Faculty Working Papers

In 1970 UNESCO adopted a convention intended to stem the flow of looted antiquities from developing countries to collections in art-importing countries. The majority of art-importing countries, including Britain, Germany, and Japan, refused to join the Convention. Contrary to other art-importing countries, and reversing its own traditionally-liberal policy, the United States accepted the international regulation of antiquities and joined the UNESCO Convention. The article seeks to explain why the United States chose to establish controls on antiquities, to the benefit of foreign countries facing archaeological plunder and to the detriment of the US art market. I argue that the concern …

Scholarship In Action: Transforming Community And Higher Education, Nancy Cantor Feb 2009

Scholarship In Action: Transforming Community And Higher Education, Nancy Cantor

Chancellor's Collection

Now is the time, as the Kellogg Commission has observed, for colleges and universities "to reshape our historic agreement with the American people so that it fits the times that are emerging instead of the times that have passed.” In the new world being forged by shared knowledge, universities are superbly positioned to transform themselves and their communities. We find ourselves on new ground, inspired by the possibilities for change, thinking about roles we can and should play in a new America. In this, we're invited by the social-legal theorist, Susan Sturm at Columbia to consider the “architecture of inclusion,” to …

Faculty and Staff Publications

The African Plio-Pleistocene hominins known as australopiths evolved a distinctive craniofacial morphology that traditionally has been viewed as a dietary adaptation for feeding on either small, hard objects or on large volumes of food. A historically influential interpretation of this morphology hypothesizes that loads applied to the premolars during feeding had a profound influence on the evolution of australopith craniofacial form. Here, we test this hypothesis using finite element analysis in conjunction with comparative, imaging, and experimental methods. We find that the facial skeleton of the Australopithecus type species, A. africanus, is well suited to withstand premolar loads. However, we …

At Risk? Exploring The Relationship Between Hiv/Aids-Related Knowledge And Risky Sexual Behavior In Jamaica, Christine Chung Feb 2009

At Risk? Exploring The Relationship Between Hiv/Aids-Related Knowledge And Risky Sexual Behavior In Jamaica, Christine Chung

Award Winning Geography Papers

Using the 2004 Knowledge, Attitudes, Behaviour and Practices (KABP) national survey, this research investigates factors contributing to HIV/AIDS-related risky sexual behavior in Jamaica, using the theoretical underpinnings behind the concept of “risk” to elucidate the relative vulnerability of different demographic groups. In particular, how is risk defined and by whom, and how does this shape the risk environment for HIV/AIDS. The social construction of “risk” is explored as an act of translation of science, whose formalized and institutionalized meanings do not always match up to the individual’s perception of personal risk to HIV/AIDS. The disjunction between knowledge and actual behavioral …
