Social Navimation: Engaging Interfaces In Social Media, Jon Olav Eikenes Aug 2009

Social Navimation: Engaging Interfaces In Social Media, Jon Olav Eikenes

Nordes Conference Series

Social media are now an integrated part of culture and digitally mediated social activities. Screen-based devices now employ sophisticated graphics including visual movement on a variety of platforms. This article explores how visually dynamic interfaces can enhance social media applications. A socio-cultural view on communication and interaction design is combined with a practice-based research approach incorporating design production with textual analysis. The term social navimation is introduced and applied in the analysis of multimodal interfaces. A set of semiotic resources are identified that should be of interest for the practice and theory of dynamic interfaces and interaction design.

Engaging Design Materials, Formats And Framings In Specific, Situated Co-Designing: A Micro-Material Perspective, Mette Agger Eriksen Aug 2009

Engaging Design Materials, Formats And Framings In Specific, Situated Co-Designing: A Micro-Material Perspective, Mette Agger Eriksen

Nordes Conference Series

Engaging co-designers in specific situations of co- designing often also means engaging tangible working materials. However, it can be challenging, so rather than seeing it as applying design methods, the article propose applying what I call a micro-material perspective. The practical concept captures both paying attention to the physical design materials, the formats of their exploration and the framings of focus when understanding and planning such specific co-design situations. To exemplify applying the perspective, the article describes and discusses six specific examples of “co-design situations” clustered in three quite well- known types of co-design situations framed for; Exploring Current Use(r) …

Are We The Tool?, Rosie Hornbuckle, Tracy Sutton, Clare Qualmann Aug 2009

Are We The Tool?, Rosie Hornbuckle, Tracy Sutton, Clare Qualmann

Nordes Conference Series

In sustainable design, the search for ‘the right tool’ is an obvious starting point, something to tell us – and those we serve – how to do it. Yet a tool, we have discovered, is what it is; useless without prior understanding of the system it is supposed to fix or the outcome it aims to achieve. An engagement with sustainability issues, debates and values are essential if tools are to be used and sustainable design to be attempted.

Peeling Apples: Prototyping Design Experiments As Research, Tuuli Mattelmäki, Ben Matthews Aug 2009

Peeling Apples: Prototyping Design Experiments As Research, Tuuli Mattelmäki, Ben Matthews

Nordes Conference Series

Design research often includes design experiments. But the discourse generated by the idea of ‘research through design’ has not always been a helpful starting point for novice design researchers who intend to incorporate design as a component of their research inquiries. In this article we make two contributions. Firstly, we present a short analysis of six design research exemplars that involve design as a constituent part of the research. We do this in an effort to demonstrate that there is a multitude of ways that design can, and has, formed the basis for research contributions. Following from that observation, we …

The Experiences Of Smith College School For Social Work Students Talking With Field Supervisors About Issues Of Race, Julia Kraft Perault Aug 2009

The Experiences Of Smith College School For Social Work Students Talking With Field Supervisors About Issues Of Race, Julia Kraft Perault

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This mixed method survey study explored Smith College School for Social Work (SCSSW) students' experiences in talking with field supervisors about issues of race. Increased racial and ethnic diversity in the United States calls for attention to issues of race in social work education and practice. The SCSSW shares with major social work organizations its commitment to anti-racism. Field supervision is an integral component of the SCSSW social work curriculum and represents an arena in which students can incorporate anti-racism learning into practice. A dearth of social work conceptual and empirical literature examines racial dialogues in field supervision from the …

Friend, Foe, Or Other? Monsters And Identity On The Odyssean Sea, Daniel Bellum Aug 2009

Friend, Foe, Or Other? Monsters And Identity On The Odyssean Sea, Daniel Bellum

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

The sea upon which Odysseus wanders in Homer's Odyssey is a chaotic and unpredictable place, empty of historical non-Greek cultures, but full of sea creatures, monsters, and deities eager to ensnare and devour the long-suffering hero. However, the Mediterranean of the Archaic Age that produced the Odyssey was a well-charted sea, where Greeks frequently interacted with foreigners. This thesis approaches the sea in the Odyssey as a mythic borderland, a medium for conceptualized representations of actual intercultural exchanges between archaic Greeks and other cultures of the ancient Mediterranean. Further, using postcolonial theory, this study attempts to understand how the various …

The Necessity Of "Conflict Transformation" In Approaches To Psychosocial Interventions, Kay Naito Aug 2009

The Necessity Of "Conflict Transformation" In Approaches To Psychosocial Interventions, Kay Naito

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical study examines the psychosocial discourse in humanitarian aid. International humanitarian assistance through psychosocial interventions is now common in complex emergencies – the context that emerges from war and violent conflict that is unique to the contemporary era of globalization. Humanitarian assistance aims to meet the needs of war-affected communities, alleviate suffering, remove barriers to health and development, quell cycles of violence, work towards long-term benefits, and maintain the core principle of 'do no harm' at the center of its moral intentions. Lively ethical, medical and cultural debates have contributed to the development of a wide range of different …

The Impact Of Indian Gaming On Educational Attainment, Poverty Among Native American Tribes, Aaron Diaz Aug 2009

The Impact Of Indian Gaming On Educational Attainment, Poverty Among Native American Tribes, Aaron Diaz

Sociology ETDs

What is the impact of Indian gaming on educational attainment among Native American tribes? Is there a correlation between Indian gaming and poverty rates? Utilizing a combination of cross-sectional analysis and longitudinal case studies, I examine whether Indian gaming has an impact on educational attainment. I also explore the economic mechanism of how this effect occurs. I analyze the 1990 and 2000 census data in addition to raw data collected from the National Indian Gaming Commission website, which provided the year selected Native American tribes were approved to pursue the establishment of gaming on their reservations. No significance was recorded …

Influence Of A Multidimensional Model Of Antiracism Training On White Clinicians Positive Self-Regard, White Privilege Attitudes And Social Identity Development, Mareike Noel Muszynski Aug 2009

Influence Of A Multidimensional Model Of Antiracism Training On White Clinicians Positive Self-Regard, White Privilege Attitudes And Social Identity Development, Mareike Noel Muszynski

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

A mixed-methods evaluation of a racism training examined whether education about a social identity development model predicated on critical race theory influenced white clinicians' attitudes regarding white privilege, level of positive self-regard, and attempted to explore how participants processed their social identity development in a follow up questionnaire. Fourteen self-identifying white clinicians completed pre and post surveys the day of a two and half hour work-shop based training. Five of those participants went on to complete the final survey including qualitative questions regarding their identity development. White privilege attitudes were measured by the White Privilege Attitudes Scale (WPAS; Pinterits, Poteat …

Intellectual Property And Access To Medicines: An Analysis Of Legislation In Central America, Alejandro Cerón, Angelina Snodgrass Godoy Aug 2009

Intellectual Property And Access To Medicines: An Analysis Of Legislation In Central America, Alejandro Cerón, Angelina Snodgrass Godoy

Anthropology: Faculty Scholarship

Globalization of intellectual property (IP) protection for medicines has been advancing during the past decade. Countries are obliged to adapt their legislation as a requirement of their membership to the World Trade Organization or as a condition of being part of international trade agreements. There is a growing recognition that, in low-income countries, stronger IP protection is a barrier to access to medicines. At the same time, the number of low-income countries writing national legislation to protect IP for pharmaceutical products is growing worldwide, but little research has been done on the ways in which this process is happening at …

A Discontinuous Space : Postmodern Perspectives On Mental Health Discourse, Jennifer Leigh Harrison Aug 2009

A Discontinuous Space : Postmodern Perspectives On Mental Health Discourse, Jennifer Leigh Harrison

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Language in the mental health field is rich with powerful metaphors, hyperbolic phrases, and linguistic symbols of historical, political and social meaning. At a closer look, a dominant discourse rooted deep in the grounds of empirical science is revealed. In this theoretical study, mental health language is deconstructed using Critical Discourse Analysis and other related theories to locate and analyze a dominant discourse, which opens space for a non-dominant discourse. Postmodern theory assumes that power, entangled with and interdependent on powerlessness, is an absolute phenomenon, and that power abuse can be revealed through the study of a discourse itself. The …

Strategy And Power In Contemporary Clinical Practice : A Theoretical Examination Of Family Preservation Philosophy And Strategic Family Therapy In The Context Of Poverty, Emily Erchick Aug 2009

Strategy And Power In Contemporary Clinical Practice : A Theoretical Examination Of Family Preservation Philosophy And Strategic Family Therapy In The Context Of Poverty, Emily Erchick

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical study reviewed family therapy and child welfare literature in the context of poverty. Clinical practice with low-income families was investigated historically. The literature brought to life issues of clinical power and aspects of social control and social reform inherent in direct practice. A consideration of family preservation philosophy and strategic family therapy was proposed. In describing these two schemas separately, their synthesis was eventually formulated and supported. The larger history of ideas that emerged yielded an epistemological discrepancy between models of practice in the field of family therapy. These discrepancies were further exaggerated by issues of policy, funding, …
