Comparing The Perceived Relevance Of Informal And Formal Learning In Skill Acquisition In A Leadership Development Program, William Kirk Smith
Comparing The Perceived Relevance Of Informal And Formal Learning In Skill Acquisition In A Leadership Development Program, William Kirk Smith
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Leadership development is at or near the top in importance to senior executives within organizations. In the criteria for the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award, leadership has the second highest weighting, behind only business results but ahead of customer focus, measurement, analysis, knowledge management, workforce focus, process management, and strategic planning. Corporations in the United States spend an estimated $20-30 billion per year in leadership training and there is a question of whether the learning that takes place outside the classroom, informal learning, is more relevant than formal learning. Learning within organizations is vital to success. It is the lifeblood …

1337 W4yz Of {Dollar}P34king: Toward A Unifying Pragmatic Theory Of Virtual Speech Community Building, Tracy Rene Leblanc
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Building a speech community requires building a shared history of communicative interaction. Within a virtual medium, speech community members employ accommodations for the lack of shared physical space that face-to-face interactions provide. These accommodations, amassing through extended discourse, bring to light the communicative strategies that virtual interlocutors employ in order to build community. Drawing from a corpus of unscripted, naturally occurring discourse of a particular virtual speech community, I engage three frames of linguistic analysis in order to recognize the communicative strategies that constitute speech community building. Relevance Theory (Sperber and Wilson 1995) accounts for the individual cognitive work involved …

Scientific Understandings Of Postpartum Illness: Improving Health Law And Policy?, Stacey A. Tovino
Scholarly Works
In its broadest sense, the Article examines the relationship between science and the law in the context of postpartum illness. From classical antiquity to the present day, physicians and scientists have investigated the causes, correlates, and consequences of the depressions and psychoses that develop in some women following their transition to motherhood. The scientific investigation of postpartum illness has been characterized by an open-ended search for knowledge with the recgonition that scientific findings published one day are subject to revision the next. Legislators and judges also have sought to understand postpartum illness as necessary to make laws that affect and …

Feminine Identity Confined: The Archaeology Of Japanese Women At Amache, A Wwii Internment Camp, Dana Ogo Shew
Feminine Identity Confined: The Archaeology Of Japanese Women At Amache, A Wwii Internment Camp, Dana Ogo Shew
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 1942, approximately 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry were evacuated from the West Coast to ten different internment camps in the interior of the United States. One of these camps was the Granada Relocation Center, otherwise known as Amache, located in southeastern Colorado. Through the analysis of archaeological material, archival documents, and oral histories, this thesis explores the experiences of Japanese American women interned at Amache. Feminine identity was greatly changed and redefined during confinement. These changes in feminine identity are examined in the public and private arenas of daily life within confinement. The construction of new and altered individual …

Women In Glaciology, An Historical Perspective, Christina L. Hulbe, Weili Wang, Simon Ommanney
Women In Glaciology, An Historical Perspective, Christina L. Hulbe, Weili Wang, Simon Ommanney
Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Women's history in glaciology extends as far back in time as the discipline itself, although their contributions to the scientific discourse have for all of that history been constrained by the sociopolitical contexts of the times. The first Journal of Glaciology paper authored by a woman appeared in 1948, within a year of the founding of the Journal, but it was not until the 1980s that women produced more than a few percent of Journal and Annals of Glaciology papers. Here international perspectives on women's participation in the sciences are presented in order to establish an economic and sociopolitical context …
Beyond The 'Chilling Effect': Immigrant Worker Behavior And The Regulation Of Occupational Safety & Health, Jayesh Rathod
Beyond The 'Chilling Effect': Immigrant Worker Behavior And The Regulation Of Occupational Safety & Health, Jayesh Rathod
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
This article forms part of a broader scholarly project that seeks to understand the root causes of immigrant worker injury and fatality trends in the U.S., and the ways in which legal norms and regulatory practices shape these trends. This particular contribution examines the broad range of attributes and experiences that influence immigrant worker behavior relating to occupational safety and health -- in the context of interactions with employers and regulatory bodies, and relating to the choices that workers themselves make about how to perform their work.
Drawing upon scholarship from multiple disciplines, the article encourages a more robust understanding …
Forget Burial: Illness, Narrative, And The Reclamation Of Disease, Marty Melissa Fink
Forget Burial: Illness, Narrative, And The Reclamation Of Disease, Marty Melissa Fink
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Through a theoretical and archival analysis of HIV/AIDS literature, this dissertation argues that the AIDS crisis is not an isolated incident that is now "over," but a striking culmination of a long history of understanding illness through narratives of queer sexual decline and national outsiderhood. Literary representations of HIV/AIDS can be read as a means of resistance to the stigmatization of people of color, women, immigrants, and queers, debunking the narratives that vilify these subjects as threats to national security and health. In drawing connections between illness, history, and the African diaspora, my work adopts a queer theoretical approach to …
Mensura Incognita: Queer Kinship, Camp Aesthetics, And Juvenal's Ninth Satire, Michael Broder
Mensura Incognita: Queer Kinship, Camp Aesthetics, And Juvenal's Ninth Satire, Michael Broder
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The dissertation addresses four problematic aspects of scholarship on Juvenal 9. The first two are matters of reception history: first, the poem has been understudied; and second, most major extant studies of the poem have been grossly or subtly homophobic. The other two problems are matters of literary criticism: Juvenal's ninth satire has traditionally been read as an attack on homosexuality, when in fact it is neither an attack, nor is it about homosexuality. The current study addresses each of these problems, reassessing the ninth satire in the context of queer theory and camp aesthetics. Chapter One traces the homophobic …
Teaching Style: An Investigation Of New York City Public High School Teacher Dress Practices, Anne J. Brownstein
Teaching Style: An Investigation Of New York City Public High School Teacher Dress Practices, Anne J. Brownstein
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In recent decades there has been increasing interest in regulating teacher appearance in the schools. While there is a great deal of anecdotal data available about what dress standards for teachers should be, to the best of the researcher's knowledge no one has undertaken scholarly research to investigate teacher attitudes towards their constructions of self, self-as-teacher, and educational philosophies as expressed by dress practices.
Predicated upon the theory that the study of self presentation provides a window through which we can gain insight into these constructions, this dissertation investigates how a sample of nine New York City public high school …

Afro-Zulians In The Trans-Atlantic World: A Case Study Of Jean De Chourio And The Black Venezuelans Of The Sur Del Lago Maracaibo (1722--1811), Raymond Andrew Keller Ii
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation addresses the history of a small community of the African Diaspora mostly overlooked: the Afro-Zulians as the descendants of the first blacks brought over to the Sur del Lago Maracaibo region in Venezuela by the Basque-French slave trader Jean de Chourio in 1722. The significance of this group in the context of colonial Venezuela from the period of 1722-1811, the year of Venezuelan independence, is highlighted. This dissertation examines perceptions that the Afro-Zulian community has of itself, as well as the perceptions that others have of it both within and outside of Venezuela. The theoretical idea central to …
Effectiveness Of Strategies For Solving Everyday Problems During Early And Later Adulthood: A Reexamination Of The Everyday Problem Solving Inventory, Joseph P. Mcfall
Effectiveness Of Strategies For Solving Everyday Problems During Early And Later Adulthood: A Reexamination Of The Everyday Problem Solving Inventory, Joseph P. Mcfall
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Within the everyday problem-solving literature, a small number of studies have examined effectiveness as a problem-solving outcome measure. Effectiveness is a method of determining the quality of strategies used to solve ill-defined problems. Knowing the effectiveness of a problem-solving strategy can help determine whether an age differences in the use of that strategy also indicates better everyday outcomes for one age group. Of the few studies that have examined age differences in effective problem solving, none have systematically assessed the dimensions that make some strategies effective and others ineffective for various problem situations. In addition, a variety of methodological considerations …

Journal of Hate Studies
T
he Institute for Hate Studies at Gonzaga University is pleased to offer Volume 8 of the Journal of Hate Studies, the theme of which is “The Other Among Us.” It is a timely topic, no doubt, as nativism, racism, and extrem- ism boil over in America’s immigration debate. This volume considers those issues as well as a wider range of perspectives on engagement and disengagement with “the other” in our society, culture, and lives.
Imbedded in this volume’s theme are myriad questions. Who is the “other” among us, and what does it mean to be an “other” or to …
A Case Study Of Enterprise Historic Resources Information Management In Large Transportation Agencies, Mti Report 09-06, Eric E. Ingbar
A Case Study Of Enterprise Historic Resources Information Management In Large Transportation Agencies, Mti Report 09-06, Eric E. Ingbar
Mineta Transportation Institute
Historic resources are in some way managed by every transportation agency in the nation. Transportation agencies manage historic and prehistoric archaeological sites, buildings, structures, objects, routes, landscapes, and districts to prevent damage to such resources and to mitigate damage when it is unavoidable. In order to track known resources, transportation agencies often keep local files in a variety of forms, rely upon external sources of information (e.g., historic preservation agencies at the state level), and depend upon staff expertise gained by years of local work. Starting in 1997, Caltrans started a series of surveys of rural rights of way in …
Paleopathological Conditions Presenting In A Collection Of Juveniles From A Merovingian Site In Central Germany, Lacey Laura Locket
Paleopathological Conditions Presenting In A Collection Of Juveniles From A Merovingian Site In Central Germany, Lacey Laura Locket
Sociology and Anthropology
This thesis explores the pathological conditions that affected a juvenile skeletal population dating to the Merovingian ages in what is now central Germany. The goal of this research is to gain an understanding of the physical health of this sub-adult population through the use of physical anthropology and historical evidence. In 1960 the cemetery ofMannheim-Vogelstang was excavated, revealing 149 juvenile skeletons dating from the sixth to the eighth century CE. Of the 149 recovered from the site, 105 were used in this research. These individuals were thoroughly visually examined for any indication of nutritional, infectious or congenital conditions, as well …
Primary Health Care Provider Differences In The Management Of Preschool Aged Children's Mental Health Issues, Kendra Nicole Erickson
Primary Health Care Provider Differences In The Management Of Preschool Aged Children's Mental Health Issues, Kendra Nicole Erickson
Sociology and Anthropology
This thesis examined health care providers' methods of identification and treatment of preschool aged children's (age 0 to 5) mental health issues and barriers to those methods in the Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area. I used a quantitative approach and utilized secondary data from a 2007 Community Access to Child Health (CATCH) Study. The conceptual framework of the domains of expertise guided this thesis. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there were significant differences by type of health care providers' methods to identify and treat preschool aged children's mental health issues; to identify how barriers to indentifying and treating …

The Historic Fargo Theatre: A Symbol Of Collective Memory And Community Consciousness, Jessica Lynn Rau
Sociology and Anthropology
The Fargo Theatre has been the gem of the Fargo, North Dakota, area for eightytwo years and is at the epicenter of the community's collective history. The theatre has hosted independent films, musical productions, vaudeville, social and political meetings, festivals, celebrations, and most importantly, memories of the people of this community, past and present. It is a physical structure that has evolved into a symbol with diverse meanings for all who know of its existence. Individual experiences and the symbolic meanings that make up the collective consciousness of the theatre, and therefore the community, are the focus of this study. …

Factors Influencing The Implementation Of Community-Wide Recycling Programs, Brian James Fier
Natural Resources Management
The purpose of this study was to determine how the social, economic, political, and administrative factors within a community influence the implementation of community-wide recycling programs. More specifically, this study examined how factors such as urban or rural character, population size, and public/private partnerships influence recycling decisions. The study explored the steps that could be taken to implement a community-wide recycling program and examined how factors such as the size ofthe community's population and its urban or rural nature influence decisions to implement community-wide recycling programs. A mixed methods approach, with a focus on interviews with recycling officials, was used …
Shifting Perspectives: Desocialization And The Journey Toward Critical Consciousness, Angela Marie Mathers
Shifting Perspectives: Desocialization And The Journey Toward Critical Consciousness, Angela Marie Mathers
Soil Science
The purpose of this study was to investigate how a service-learning course fosters students' development of a critical consciousness. Participants of this research study were students who participated in the 2009 International Service Seminar, a three-credit course that culminated with a service trip to Antigua, Guatemala. Interviews were conducted with participants that focused on students' experiences both during the class and in the year since the completion of the course. Utilizing critical pedagogy literature, I focused on the work of Jennifer Moon (1999) and Ira Shor (1992) to analyze the processes through which students gain critical consciousness. What became clear …

"Because I'M Neither Gringa Nor Latina, Because I Am Not Any One Thing": Children Of Colombian And Dominican Immigrants Negotiating Identities Within (Trans)National Social Fields, Debora Upegui-Hernandez
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation explores how Colombian and Dominican children of immigrants living in New York City negotiate multiple identities, selves, cultures, and histories within transnational social fields. In other words, children of immigrants grow up in the midst of multiple cultures and juggle multiple sets of cultural norms, values, and expectations, their parents' and those of mainstream `American' culture, while they maintain transnational ties to the home country of their parents. This study contributes to the social psychological literature about Dominican and Colombian children of immigrants by introducing a transnational framework to understand their experiences growing up in-between cultures and borders. …
