Romanian Men's Masculinities In Online Personal Advertisements, Sebastian E. Bartos, Voonchin Phua, Erin N. Avery Jan 2010

Romanian Men's Masculinities In Online Personal Advertisements, Sebastian E. Bartos, Voonchin Phua, Erin N. Avery

Sociology Faculty Publications

The present paper analyses Romanian men's masculinities via a quantitative and qualitative analysis of 380 online personal advertisements posted by men. The case of Romania is particularly interesting for understanding gender relations, since the country has recently experienced the impact of (post-) communisim, democratization, and resurging traditionalism. Romanian men's advertisements often express traditional gender relations: men-seeking-women are interested in attractive, less educated partners, while men-seeking-men emphasize discretion. Some men resist such patriarchal standards: men-seeking-women who are highly educated prefer educated women, and some men-seeking-men give out recognizable photos of themselves. Limitations and further research directions are discussed.

Entering Into The Profound Mystery: Yves Congar’S Via Media On The Salvation Of People Of Non-Christian Religions, Elizabeth M. Cunneen Jan 2010

Entering Into The Profound Mystery: Yves Congar’S Via Media On The Salvation Of People Of Non-Christian Religions, Elizabeth M. Cunneen

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

The twenty-first century Catholic Church is in the process of understanding its relation to the Second Vatican Council. Yves Congar, one of the most influential theologians at the council, had a theological career spanning over fifty years, and his theological insights remain pertinent to contemporary historical and cultural concerns. This paper describes Yves Congar’s particular ecclesiological, pneumatological and Christological insights in response to the question of the salvation of people of non-Christian religions. Congar seeks to find a via media, or middle way, which denies two extreme perspectives, one of which holds that explicit non-Christians are not saved, and …

Sixteenth-Century Glass Beads From Chotuna, North Coast Of Peru, Christopher B. Donnan, Jill Silton Jan 2010

Sixteenth-Century Glass Beads From Chotuna, North Coast Of Peru, Christopher B. Donnan, Jill Silton

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Burials excavated on the north coast of Peru were associated with 16th-century European glass beads as well as shell and stone specimens of local manufacture. The beads were strung as necklaces, bracelets, and anklets, often combining several varieties of European beads with local products. The glass beads as well as the other grave goods suggest that the burials date to the first part of the 16th century, probably between 1530 and 1560.

The Beads That Did Not Buy Manhattan Island, Peter Francis Jr. Jan 2010

The Beads That Did Not Buy Manhattan Island, Peter Francis Jr.

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

The purchase of Manhattan Island is an unrecorded event dressed in mystery and myth. An examination of the myth and of its history corrects misconceptions that are nearly as ancient as the purchase.

Venetian Glass Beads And The Slave Trade From Liverpool, 1750-1800, Saul Guerrero Jan 2010

Venetian Glass Beads And The Slave Trade From Liverpool, 1750-1800, Saul Guerrero

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

The competition within the slave trade during the 18th century forced slave traders to search for an assortment of barter cargo that would attract the preferential attention of the African suppliers of slaves. An enterprising group of Liverpool slave traders that formed William Davenport & Co. rose to the occasion and in three years became the supplier of half of all the glass beads re-exported to Africa from England. An analysis of barter values in Bonny, West Africa, reveals that glass beads were one of the main categories of trade goods of great interest to the African slave traders. The …

Lucayan Beads From San Salvador, Bahamas (Ca. A.D. 900-1500), Jeffrey P. Blick, Richard Kim, Tyler G. Hill Jan 2010

Lucayan Beads From San Salvador, Bahamas (Ca. A.D. 900-1500), Jeffrey P. Blick, Richard Kim, Tyler G. Hill

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

A variety of Lucayan shell, stone, and coral beads as well as beadmaking waste was recovered from several sites on San Salvador, Bahamas. Following detailed analysis, comparisons to other beadmaking sites in the Greater Caribbean region indicate that fabrication, material, color preference, and even general forms are similar across great distances from the Maya region to the Greater and Lesser Antilles and the Bahamian Archipelago. In some cases, beads appear to have been made at the household level (Middle Pre-Classic Maya, Post Saladoid Lucayans), although certain stratified societies (later Maya, Classic Taíno) seem to have exerted more control or monopoly …

The Place Of The Person In Lis Research: An Exploration In Methodology And Representation, David H. Michels Jan 2010

The Place Of The Person In Lis Research: An Exploration In Methodology And Representation, David H. Michels

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

In this exploratory study, the researcher reflects on personal experience as a student at an academic library over the course of one year of PhD study. Data were gathered using an autoethnographic methodology, and the reflections on these data are presented in the form of three two-minute video clips narrated with accompanying poems. This study assumes that the different paradigms and theories about information behaviour affect how the individual is understood within this system. These reflections raise questions about the influences our models have at ground level of the library profession and the people libraries claim to serve.

Villagers And Archaeologists: An Examination Of Past Behaviors At The Barton Site (21gd02), Emily Hildebrant Jan 2010

Villagers And Archaeologists: An Examination Of Past Behaviors At The Barton Site (21gd02), Emily Hildebrant

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

After a 40 year hiatus, excavations at the Bartron site (21GD02) resumed from May 2008 through June 2008 with new research questions. The primary impetus for this research was an investigation into the nature of the reported wall trench structure (Feature 13), one of the characteristics of the site previously cited as evidence of Mississippian contact or influence in the Red Wing Locality. This structure was hypothesized to be part of Pierre Charles Le Sueur's 1694/95 overwintering post on the southern end of Prairie Island. When excavated three centimeters below the previously excavated depth, the proposed wall trench structure was …

Cosmopolitan Theory And Anthropological Practice In Brazil, Jan Hoffman French Jan 2010

Cosmopolitan Theory And Anthropological Practice In Brazil, Jan Hoffman French

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

In relation to the theme of this volume - to inquire into transformations marked by knowledge-making projects and the role played by intellectuals - in this chapter I will focus on Brazilian anthropologists. In considering how impoverished or marginalized communities become integrated into global claims about the human condition, I analyze the efforts of Brazilian anthropologists on behalf of rural black communities in the northeastern backlands in light of cosmopolitan theory.

Illusions Of Market Paradise: State, Business, And Economic Reform In Post-Socialist Russia And Post-1980s Crisis Argentina, Jeffrey K. Hass, Gastón J. Beltrán Jan 2010

Illusions Of Market Paradise: State, Business, And Economic Reform In Post-Socialist Russia And Post-1980s Crisis Argentina, Jeffrey K. Hass, Gastón J. Beltrán

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

The 1980s and early 1990s were characterized by sweeping, radical neoliberal, monetarist-inspired economic reforms designed to correct financial or structural crises. Latin American countries initiated the wave, followed by Eastern Europe and the former USSR, although the timing, scope, and policies varied. Often one reads accounts of friends and foes of reform lined up to do battle in domestic and international alliances. However, reform processes and outcomes do not always follow the formula of reformers versus conservatives; there is more to the balance of power than these all-too-common accounts would suggest. Industrial managers in the Soviet Union and post-Soviet Russia …

Acculturating Forensic Science: What Is ‘Scientific Culture’, And How Can Forensic Science Adopt It?, Simon A. Cole Jan 2010

Acculturating Forensic Science: What Is ‘Scientific Culture’, And How Can Forensic Science Adopt It?, Simon A. Cole

Fordham Urban Law Journal

Part I, describes how the NAS Report characterizes “scientific culture.” I suggest that the described attributes of scientific culture are vague and unspecific, and that more thought is necessary to elucidate how they might map onto forensic science. In Part II, I suggest that the NAS Report’s characterization of “scientific culture” is based on popular accounts of science and “the scientific method.” I suggest that these accounts are incomplete, generally considered obsolete, and not particularly helpful in pointing a way toward reform of forensic science. In Part III, I posit a conception of science as work rather than method. In …

Culture Care Meanings, Beliefs, And Practices In Rural Dominican Republic, Gretchen Schumacher Jan 2010

Culture Care Meanings, Beliefs, And Practices In Rural Dominican Republic, Gretchen Schumacher

Peer Reviewed Articles

Purpose: This ethnonursing study explored the meanings, beliefs, and practices of care for rural Dominicans in the Dominican Republic. Design: Leininger’s culture care diversity and universality theory, ethnonursing, and four-phase analysis method guided the study. Interviews were conducted with 19 general and 10 key informants. Findings: Analysis of interviews revealed three main themes: (a) family presence is essential for meaningful care experiences and care practices, (b) respect and attention are central to the meaning of care and care practices, and (c) rural Dominicans value and use both generic (folk) and professional care practices. Discussion and Conclusion: Implications and recommendations for …

The Burden Of Pursuing Treatment Abroad: Three Stories Of Medical Travelers From Yemen, Beth Kangas Jan 2010

The Burden Of Pursuing Treatment Abroad: Three Stories Of Medical Travelers From Yemen, Beth Kangas

Peer Reviewed Articles

This case study features stories of patients from Yemen, a low-income country in the Arabian Peninsula, who traveled abroad for medical care. Their stories, drawn from interviews with Yemeni medical travelers in India, highlight the economic and emotional burden of pursuing treatment abroad. These stories of chronic non-communicable diseases and serious injuries depart from the common portrayal of medical tourists as wealthy elective patients from the North traveling for cosmetic surgery. The stories center on the demand and benefit of technological medicine for patients from low-income countries and raise questions about what constitutes ‘health’ when non-communicable conditions often entail ongoing …

Missionaries, Moral Advocacy, And The Transformation Of Police Court Procedure In London, 1876-1930, Sascha Auerbach Jan 2010

Missionaries, Moral Advocacy, And The Transformation Of Police Court Procedure In London, 1876-1930, Sascha Auerbach

Studio for Law and Culture

This paper examines how informal courtroom negotiations transformed formal trial procedures, significantly expanded the social roles of local courts, and helped shape discourses of class, gender, race, and nationalism in British courtrooms. Specifically, it explores the origins, development, and impact of London’s first unofficial probation officers, the Police Court Missionaries. The introduction of these missionaries, who were paid agents of the Church of England Temperance Society (CETS), into the courts of the metropolis represented a watershed in the relationship between the state, private philanthropy, and working-class men and women. From the evolving dialogue between missionaries, working-class defendants, and magistrates emerged …

Knowledge Games, Truth Seeking, And Organ Transplants Regulation, Marie-Andrée Jacob Jan 2010

Knowledge Games, Truth Seeking, And Organ Transplants Regulation, Marie-Andrée Jacob

Studio for Law and Culture

In this paper, I examine how different relations to knowledge are enacted among experts working in the governance of kidney transplants. Using fieldwork material gathered in transplant hospital and bureaus, I analyse how legal knowledge transacts with expert and lay knowledge in the context of very pragmatic tasks: detect the "intention to donate" and the "altruistic motivations" of those who procure a kidney to someone in need. My focus is on the management and circulation of knowledge, rather than the object of knowledge - transplants. Here, the law assigns its regulatory power onto experts, and the committees of experts in …

Supporting Muslim Students In Secular Public Schools, Candace Schlein, Elaine Chan

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This article discusses the findings of a study examining the challenges and opportunities of supporting Muslim students in secular public schools. Education is explored as a multifaceted interplay between home and family life, community resources, school programs and policies, and classroom lessons to investigate the curricular experiences of Muslim students in North America. In particular, this study focuses on data gathered through interviews, informal conversations, and participant observations to draw a narrative case study of a female, Bangladeshi, Muslim student attending a comprehensive elementary and middle school. The study explores tensions and growth among this Muslim student, her parent, and …

Towards A New Measure Of Playfulness: The Capacity To Fully And Freely Engage In Play, Rebecca Cornelli Sanderson Jan 2010

Towards A New Measure Of Playfulness: The Capacity To Fully And Freely Engage In Play, Rebecca Cornelli Sanderson

Dissertations

The current study involved the development and validation of a new measure of playfulness, the Project Joy Playfulness Scale (PJPS). The PJPS was designed specifically as a brief teacher-report measure for use in the preschool classroom. Playfulness was hypothesized to include four dimensions: Active Engagement, Internal Control, Joyfulness, and Social Connection. Blending academic knowledge with on-the-ground clinical experience, the measure was collaboratively developed and then tested in two separate phases of data collection.

In the first phase of the study, two hundred and twenty-two preschool students aged three to five were rated by two classroom teachers on the alpha version …

Reconciliation And Third-Party Interests: Tsilhqot'in Nation V. British Columbia, Kent Mcneil Jan 2010

Reconciliation And Third-Party Interests: Tsilhqot'in Nation V. British Columbia, Kent Mcneil

Articles & Book Chapters

The manner in which conflicts between Aboriginal title to land and private third-party interests should be dealt with is a major issue in Canadian law and policy. The matter came up at trial in Tsilhqot'in Nation v. British Columbia, and again was left unresolved. However, Justice Vickers did acknowledge the vital importance of the issue and the need to reconcile these conflicting interests through honourable negotiations. While admitting that a courtroom is not the appropriate forum for achieving reconciliation, he provided detailed analysis of the applicable legal principles and insights into the public policy considerations that should guide the negotiations. …

Comparing And Understanding Legal Aid Priorities: A Paper Prepared For Legal Aid Ontario, Mary Jane Mossman, Karen Schucher, Claudia Schmeing

Articles & Book Chapters

This paper explores different ways of defining legal aid priorities. In doing so, the paper examines how ideas about access to justice have been implemented in Ontario's judicare and community clinic systems, reviews developments in other jurisdictions, and the requirements of Charter values. The paper also situates priority-setting within the administration of justice, the literature about legal needs and social exclusion, and the role of LAO as a state agency to ensure access to justice for the poor and disadvantaged. Finally, the paper assesses the limits of the "legal categories" approach and the "legal needs / social exclusion" approach, and …

Tax Transplants And Local Culture: A Comparative Study Of The Chinese And Canadian Gaar, Jinyan Li Jan 2010

Tax Transplants And Local Culture: A Comparative Study Of The Chinese And Canadian Gaar, Jinyan Li

Articles & Book Chapters

This Article discusses, compares, and analyzes the transplanted General Anti-Avoidance Rule (GAAR) in China and the GAAR in Canada. It demonstrates the similarity between the GAARs on paper and the divergence between the GAARs in action. It argues that the divergence is largely attributable to the differences between Canada and China in the general legal system, legal institutions, judicial and taxpayer attitudes towards tax avoidance, and the ideology of tax avoidance.

The Evictions At Nyamuma: Struggles Over Land And The Limits Of Human Rights Advocacy In Tanzania, Ruth Buchanan, Kerry Rittich, Helen Kijo-Bisimba

Articles & Book Chapters

The event which gave rise to the inquiry in this paper occurred in a village known as Remaining Nyamuma which was located on the border of the Ikorongo Game Reserve, immediately adjacent to the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. Sometime in October of 2001, district officials informed the villagers by loudspeaker that they must leave the area and return to their original villages within four days. Two days after the notice period had ended, the District Commissioner himself set fire to a house belonging to one of the villagers, initiating a violent eviction of the villagers by the burning of …
