Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The surge in internet accessibility has transformed wildlife trade by facilitating the acquisition of wildlife through online platforms. This scenario presents unique ethical challenges for researchers, as traditional ethical frameworks for in-person research cannot be readily applied to the online realm. Currently, there is a lack of clearly defined guidelines for appropriate ethical procedures when conducting online wildlife trade (OWT) research. In response to this, we consulted the scientific literature on ethical considerations in online research and examined existing guidelines established by professional societies and ethical boards. Based on these documents, we present a set of recommendations that can inform …

Reimagining A Nursing Ecosystem In An Uncertain World, Pawel Krol, Rochelle Einboden, Horas Wong, Lynore Geia, Agness Tembo

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The discussion paper synthesises the insights shared during a keynote panel at the 26th International Philosophy of Nursing Conference, themed “Reimagining a nursing ecosystem in an uncertain world.” It delves into the substantial impact uncertainty has on nursing, offering innovative strategies for reconceptualization. Through a critical examination of evidence-based practice, the tendency to homogenise nursing is discussed, prompting advocacy for a Nietzschean political framework as a form of resistance and emancipation. Drawing inspiration from Donna Haraway, a transition from individualistic to relational approaches is needed, especially amidst social and economic instability. Furthermore, the integration of caritas and Indigenous epistemologies underscore …

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

This study reports faculty experiences regarding the discovery of scholarly content, highlighting similarities and differences across a range of academic disciplines. The authors interviewed twenty-five faculty members at a public, high-research university in the Midwest to explore the intersections of discovery, browsing, and format from diverse disciplinary perspectives. Although most participants rely on similar discovery tools such as library catalogs and databases and Google Scholar, their discovery techniques varied according to the discipline and type of research being done. Browsing is not a standard method for discovery, but it is still done selectively and strategically by some scholars. Journal articles …

Recent calls to address racism in bioethics reflect a sense of urgency to mitigate the lethal effects of a lack of action. While the field was catalyzed largely in response to pivotal events deeply rooted in racism and other structures of oppression embedded in research and health care, it has failed to center racial justice in its scholarship, pedagogy, advocacy, and practice, and neglected to integrate anti-racism as a central consideration. Academic bioethics programs play a key role in determining the field's norms and practices, including methodologies, funding priorities, and professional networks that bear on equity, inclusion, and epistemic justice. …

Stalemate At Port Arthur: William James On War, Vulnerability, And Pluralist Personalism, Bennett Gilbert Oct 2024

Stalemate At Port Arthur: William James On War, Vulnerability, And Pluralist Personalism, Bennett Gilbert

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

Using a close reading of a single clause and its context in a section in A Pluralist Universe, we see the moral dangers James saw in traditional ontology, in particular its relation to war and peace. This analysis opens up James’s combining the personalist philosophy of his friend Borden Bowne (and others) with the pluralism he developed late in his career. This leads, further, to reflection of James’s performative philosophizing. Finding in James a theory of “pluralistic personalism” gives us a fresh look at the far-reaching power of his basic concepts of moral philosophy.

Holistic Methodologies For Fusing The Material And The Ideological: Tracing The Sociotechnical Imaginaries That Enable The World’S Fastest Supercomputer, Sarah Read, Jordan Firth

English Faculty Publications and Presentations

When the Aurora supercomputer launches at Argonne National Laboratory it will operate at the exascale and be one of the fastest supercomputers in the world. We have been invited by Argonne to do field work to understand both the day-to-day processes that maintain supercomputing (e.g. user documentation, government reporting, user testing) and the sociotechnical national imaginaries [11], –in particular the increasingly tense global competition between the US and China in the supercomputing race–that shaped the development of Aurora. This article proposes our work-in-progress methodological approach that accounts for both higher-level imaginaries and the everyday practices of supercomputing. We also describe …

Jurnal Civics: Media Kajian Kewarganegaraan

This research aims to describe the position of gender studies in the curriculum of civic education study programs in universities. This research was conducted at several universities that have civic education study programs. The research used a qualitative descriptive approach and data collection techniques through interviews, observation, and documentation, while the data analysis technique used triangulation to obtain data validity. The results of the research found three things. First, the four universities that were the objects of this research developed curricula according to the provisions of the Ministry of Education and Culture. Second, there are explicitly no courses related to …

Designing A Best Possible Caregiver History To Facilitate Disposition Planning For Older Adults In Emergency Departments, Karen De Sola-Smith, Matthew Growdon, Anita N. Chary, Jennifer D. Portz, Kenneth Lam

Journal of Geriatric Emergency Medicine

Introduction and Background

Detailed information about caregivers is crucial for planning disposition from emergency departments (EDs), but it is unclear what specific information is useful for ED clinicians and how that information should be presented.

Methods

We used a Design Thinking approach to develop a standardized format—which we call a “Best Possible Caregiver History” (BPCH)—for displaying useful caregiver information to ED clinicians. The key steps of this approach are needfinding, followed by iterative cycles of ideation, rapid prototyping, and testing. For needfinding, we used semi-structured interviews of four ED clinicians on current practices for discovering and documenting caregiver information. For …

College Students As Participants In Our Democracy: Models For Engagement, Suzanne E. Walker-Pacheco, Otto Brown, Sarah Nash, Seth Andersen, Allison Rank

eJournal of Public Affairs

Low rates of voter engagement characteristic of the college-age demographic are determined by a host of factors. These factors vary according to geography, demographic variables, and individual inclinations. Those who strive to strengthen our democracy through increasing access to our political system confront many challenges, and there exists no “one-size-fits-all” approach. College campuses, where young voters obviously congregate in large numbers, provide a primary access point for democratic engagement efforts. Institutions of higher education are compelled to respond to the federal mandate put forth by the Higher Education Act to provide information on voter registration. Anecdotal information suggests a greatly …

Short-Term Associations Between Accumulated Rainfall And Atmospheric Moisture During Landfall Of Three Atlantic Hurricanes, Peng Jia, Andrew Joyner, Yilun Sun

The Geographical Bulletin

Most hurricane-related deaths are caused by flooding and, as a result, accurate forecasting of rainfall can have a profound impact on reducing loss of life as well as property damages resulting from hurricanes. Quantitative relationships between atmospheric moisture and rainfall have been examined during the landfall of three Atlantic hurricanes in the study, with Geographic Information System and high temporal resolution remote sensing data used and time lags between atmospheric moisture and rainfall taken into account. Results show that 1) atmospheric moisture and rainfall-related variables can be accurately gauged by satellite at any given place and provide approximate estimations for …

The Association Of The Oral Microbiota With Cognitive Functioning In Adolescence, Oxana Y Naumova, Pavel V Dobrynin, Galina V Khafizova, Elena L Grigorenko

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background: A growing body of research supports the role of the microbial communities residing in the digestive system in the host's cognitive functioning. Most of these studies have been focused on the gut microbiome and its association with clinical phenotypes in middle-aged and older adults. There is an insufficiency of population-based research exploring the association of normative cognitive functioning with the microbiome particularly with the oral microbiota.

Methods: In this study, using metagenomics and metabolomics, we characterized the salivary microbiome diversity in a sample of 51 males of Hispanic and African American origin aged 12-18 years and explored …

“What Keeps Me In School”: Oregon Bipoc Learners Voice Support That Makes Higher Education Possible, Roberta Hunte, Miranda Mosier-Puentes, Gita Mehrotra, Eva Skuratowicz

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

A growing number of college students are nontraditional learners (age 21–65) who are people of color. These students face unique challenges in a higher education system increasingly shaped by neoliberalism and the ongoing context of institutionalized racism. In Oregon, policymakers have established ambitious goals to address racial disparities in educational attainment. In this study, focus groups and interviews were conducted with 111 Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) adult learners in Oregon to better understand their perspectives and experiences in regard to educational and career pathways. Participants included currently enrolled students, adults who had enrolled and left, and adults …
